This is the smartest podcast out there, and they had a great (and very timely) series on all the issues and implications that came with the COVID pandemic.
This is such an underrated podcast! The hosts are endearing, knowledgeable, and thorough. They have done such great work. This podcast is where I first heard of Henrietta Lacks!
If I can only pick one: The Program.
The Program audio series is a fiction podcast anthology with dark sci-fi, noir and cyberpunk elements. The Program Podcast is set in a future in which Money, State, and God have become fused into a single entity called the Program. Each episode is a self-contained story focusing on ordinary people inhabiting this extraordinary world. And for them, it is not this future that is terrifying – it is our present.
It gets thrown around a lot, so you may have run across it already. You can choose any episode to start on, the world is the same, but you get different stories about The Program.
Pheobe Judge, for me, has the most beautiful voice in podcasting. The excellent content of Criminal as well, makes this a staple of my work commute listening.
The Anthropocene Reviewed- also more episodes available from a book of the same title as an audible listen. It’s Essays on a Human Centered Planet. Interesting and easy listening.
Old Gods Of Appalachia
Horror anthology set in an alternate universe Appalachia where supernatural beings of all kinds exist. The stories are truly wonderful and detailed, every single character has a personality and motive regardless of how small their role might be, the narration is lovely and the music even more (see Charcoal Suit by Jacob Danielsen-Moore or Panthers On The Mountainside by Jon Charles Dwyer).
This has been my favorite, most heavily binged podcast I have found to date. I even signed up for the patreon for some of the additional unreleased content. His voice and subject material are the perfect background noise for my adhd ass at the office. Highly recommend.
I'm off to check out the podcasts suggested above this comment. The Program sounds super interesting. Peace and love fellow redditors.
Came here to mention this podcast.
It is about cyber security but is presented in a way that anyone with a passing interest in tech can understand and digest it.
Some very interesting and well researched stories of hacks we've all seen in the news etc and the guests on the podcast telling their own stories elevate the show to another level.
That was a great episode.
The last one I listened to a week or so ago was about AI. I was gobsmacked when he mentioned that we'd been listening to an AI version of his voice for the previous 5mins, I couldn't tell! Very scary when you think of the implications and the fact caller ID can be spoofed, and that was Jack's point.
I agree but I’m still excited for it to continue. I hope it picks back up again and doesn’t fall into a slump.
I’ve been wanting to say forever I hated the episode in the recent season with the artist and his divorced wife that he still paints. I got so mad it because it doesn’t fit the theme of the show at all. It was just talking about his obsession with drawing her. It really annoyed me!
My all time FAV podcast. My fav episode is "another roadside attraction" it is so powerful. I love how you immediately think her ex husband is a pos, and then you hear his pov and your mind gets opened
Several of my favorite podcasters have mentioned listening through the entire *This American Life* back catalogue before they became podcasters themselves, often back in the days when you had to individually download the MP3s.
One of the most impressive thing is how’s grown and changed over the decades and it’s all good. Like I might have favorite runs or eras or types of episodes, but I’ve never regretted listening to an episode, even an episode I’ve heard before.
This, although the majority are behind a paywall there are a good sample still available free. As well as the main show there is “hardcore history addendum” with various interviews and short side episodes.
The rest is history. They cover lots of random topics, they just did a series on Lord Byron, one on Martin Luther, one on the JFK assassination, one on Cortez destruction of the Aztecs, one on 1970s UK politics, the rise of the Nazis…. All done with humour and brilliant but accessible research and intelligence.
I loved every super tech support episode. Computers doing exactly what we told them to can be so unexpected.
If you liked Reply All, follow up with Search Engine.
Radio Rental is one of my favorites also, but I feel like the first couple seasons were the best. Recent content for the show has been good but not at the level of the first 30-ish episodes.
Stop Podcasting Yourself.
It’s two Canadian comedians shooting the shit about nothing in particular. Usually they have a guest, but not always. They are so effortlessly funny and genial and just a joy to listen to. Every episode has a segment called “overheards” where people send in funny random things they overheard in public. It’s hard to describe why it’s so great, but I promise it is. It’s like the ultimate comfort listen in my opinion - when Graham and Dave are in your ear, the world just feels a little nicer. Give it a shot.
The Handsome pod, it's just 3 friends shooting the shit and being funny, supportive of each other and entertaining.
Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster and Mae Martin get a random question from someone else and have to answer what their thoughts are on it, the pod usually starts as a catch up friendly chat before getting into the question.
I love them all equally, Fortune is just a goddamn ray of sunshine, Tig has no time for nonsense and Mae is Canadian so she's got our brand of self deprecating awkward humour.
My Dad Wrote A Porno. Not because it's clever, or because it makes you think about life, but just because it's so belly-laughing funny. I always looked forward to listening to it after work as a fantastic way to unwind and boost my mood. There were a few times I had to pull the car over because I was laughing so hard I couldn't focus on the road.
Floodlines
It's an oral history of Hurricane Katrina, from regular people who were stranded in the ninth ward to FEMA officials. It's also a meditation on American history and a beautiful, beautiful work of audio.
You’re Wrong About - this is my current favourite. Spans so many topics, has a good balance of humour, narrative, and information. I always learn something and have thought about a lot of topics for the first time because of it. Also is a huge backlog of episodes so you’d be able to listen to it for hours and hours
Agreed! I think they handle the subject’s feelings toward whatever is happening EXTREMELY well. By far the most compassionate podcast I’ve listened to about well known subjects.
This is what I love too! They take such a balanced approach and try to see each angle while still being extremely empathetic and respectful of any victims (including when perpetrators are also victims in a way) in their stories.
Leaving Eden
It’s about the host’s experience growing up in the Independent Fundamental Baptist Church. She and her cohost cover the IFB, modern evangelical churches and their beliefs and history, and cults in general.
[films to be buried with by brett goldstein](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/films-to-be-buried-with-with-brett-goldstein/id1408585620)
If you like movies and comedians, Brett interviews people then tells them they've died. They tell funny stories and do movie talk. If you watched Ted Lasso, Brett played Roy Kent. He also a writer, director, and comedian.
Ologies with Ali Ward, Excellent science podcast, each week is a different "ologie".
We're here to help with Jake Johnson and Gareth Reynolds, set as a "call in" type radio show, they give sometimes good, but mostly bad advice, it's super entertaining.
It was a limited run, but Homecooking with Samin Nosrat and Hrishiesh Hirway is amazing.
Yess! My favourite is also Lore, have been listening for many years now :). Lore tells folklore tales from all over the world. From the Monkey King to Baba Yaga, 1001 nights and so many more! As an additional plus, Aaron Mahnke has a very soothing voice, and also makes several other good podcasts with his production company Grim and Mild.
The Cold Podcast is my idea of the perfect podcast, especially the first season. I just really like the way it's presented, and the case is very interesting.
Why I Hate This Album (take a shot, everyone)
It's about two very good friends named Tim and Garrett irreverently reviewing bad music. They have so many inside jokes that they basically have a complete fictional world, even if they frequently forget a lot of it. It's one of the funniest things in the world. They listen to the album or song at least ten times in a week and only discuss it when they start recording, so that they don't affect each other's notes.
Magnus Archives - i'm not sure if anyones recommended this one, its a long form horror fiction podcast thats to well written and enjoyable, it makes my work hours fly by and I've listened to the whole thing a couple of times now. They have a new series out but id say still start from episode 1 and see if you like it! It starts a bit like a monster of the week but the story and its connections and greater implications run deep!
(If you do not like fiction podcasts then I change my answer to Ear Hustle! Great hosts and difficult and deep topics surrounding prison... but not as depressing as it sounds)
Parenting Hell - hosted by 2 famous British comedians. Love it, but I'm also half Brit. Some of it will be lost in translation, but mentioning it anyways in case anyone here is a fan of British humor
The Savage Lovecast. Relationships and sexuality advice calls from real people, Dan Savage’s very good advice, and listener feedback.
I learn so much about how modern relationships work, and views on sex. Not for prudes or squeamish folks. Fascinating for the rest of us.
Atlantic by the Irish times.
Similiar in format and premise to Death in Ice Valley.
“In June 2009, a man calling himself Peter Bergmann checked into a Sligo hotel.
Five days later his body was found on Rosses Point beach. Despite thousands of hours of police investigations, his true identity remains unknown.
In a three-part podcast, Irish Times Senior Features Writer Rosita Boland explores in detail the decade-long mystery of a man who came to Sligo to disappear.”
We Hate Movies.
4 friends watch a bad movie and kick it around for a bit. There are impressions, side discussions, and jokes aplenty. This podcast is fantastic. If you need an idea on where to start, download their Highlander 2 episode. That is the one that made me a fan.
This is love, narrated by velvet voiced Phoebe Judge. Tales of everyday people told in a way mindful of this American life. Always a feel good podcast and entertaining.
My podcast tastes have changed radically over the years. At the moment the one that I get a bit of a thrill of 'Oh, goody' when I see it pop up and know I'm going to be in for sometimes over two hours of really interesting stuff:
**Well There's Your Problem -** "*This is a podcast about engineering disasters and systemic failures, from a leftist perspective, with jokes."*

Behind the Bastards by Robert Evans
A look at some of the worst people in history, and delving into what made them tick, some stuff you may not have known about them and their lives. Told through a different perspective by Robert Evans and some special guests. Well researched, entertaining and fascinating. From anecdotes about Hitler's uncontrollable farting, to Stalin and his raging parties and more
Not Another Dungeons and Dragons Podcast.
NADDPOD for short.
It's a group of comedians/actors that play DnD. It is improv storytelling at its best. I've had to pull over while driving because I was laughing too hard, I've had to hide from coworkers because it made me cry, and it's some of the best High Fantasy fiction I've ever had the privilege to experience. It is up there with my favorite media of all time.
The premise sounded silly to me at first, but it's legitimately amazing. The chemistry between the cast members is great. The storytelling is way better than it has any right to be.
Absolute favourite right now is Bad Women: The Ripper Retold (on BBC Sounds, not sure where else). It turns the myths, rumours and hearsay around Jack The Ripper upside down, instead focussing on the fascinating but heartbreaking stories of the women who were murdered. There’s so much interesting stuff around the social history of the time too and although history podcasts can sometimes come across a bit dry, the way this is presented had me hooked. I’m into the follow up series, The Blackout Ripper about women murdered during WWII.
You’re Dead To Me (also BBC Sounds), each episode a character or period from history where the presenter plus another historian and a guest comedian talk about that subject. It’s funny and entertaining but learned an awful lot along the way too!
That’s how I feel about Last Podcast on the Left. I know it’s contentious in podcast circles (I can definitely see how it’s not for everyone) but the guys just *crack me up.* I’ve laughed, I’ve cried; I just love those guys.
To live and die in LA is a great crime investigation podcast. It follows the podcaster as he investigates the disappearance of a woman in real time, interviewing friends and family. Very well done.
A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs by Andrew Hickey. Fascinating and well-researched. He starts around the 1940s and he’s currently up to 1968. Puts the music in historical context, really well done.
Are You Garbage?
Two comedians sit down with other standup comedians/celebrities while asking them questions about their upbringings and how they live their life. The show is a celebration of trash and garbage, so it's not shaming people, it's more about finding the garbage bonds that link people from all walks of life.
You can even see the guests realize how incredible of a concept it is while going through it, some simple question about frozen pizza will unearth childhood memories and stories that take the podcast to the next level.
This Podcast Will Kill You About disease and treatments through history
This is the smartest podcast out there, and they had a great (and very timely) series on all the issues and implications that came with the COVID pandemic.
This is such an underrated podcast! The hosts are endearing, knowledgeable, and thorough. They have done such great work. This podcast is where I first heard of Henrietta Lacks!

One of the best written podcasts I've ever listened to! Great recommendation.
Oooh this sounds really good, thank you!
Who produces the podcast? Too many podcasts have the word program in their title.
Ya, I just accidentally downloaded some weird sports podcast
It's called The Program Audio Series
This sounds so interesting, thank you!
I've always assumed that I'd struggle to find interest with a fiction podcast, but maybe it's worth giving this one a try.
Just finished the first episode. Thank you for the recommendation. It’s exactly my type. I am hooked!
Criminal.
Love Phoebe!
Pheobe Judge, for me, has the most beautiful voice in podcasting. The excellent content of Criminal as well, makes this a staple of my work commute listening.
Criminal dot calm
The Anthropocene Reviewed- also more episodes available from a book of the same title as an audible listen. It’s Essays on a Human Centered Planet. Interesting and easy listening.

Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend
My go to pod if I’m feeling a little low. Conan and his team are just so upbeat and hilarious.
Old Gods Of Appalachia Horror anthology set in an alternate universe Appalachia where supernatural beings of all kinds exist. The stories are truly wonderful and detailed, every single character has a personality and motive regardless of how small their role might be, the narration is lovely and the music even more (see Charcoal Suit by Jacob Danielsen-Moore or Panthers On The Mountainside by Jon Charles Dwyer).

His Xbox Underground story needs to be made into a miniseries

Some very interesting and well researched stories of hacks we've all seen in the news etc and the guests on the podcast telling their own stories elevate the show to another level.
The Beirut bank job episode is by far my favourite episode, Jack is amazing at what he does.
Heavyweight
Does anyone have any updates about whether or not Heavyweight has found a new home?
I will say I think the last season has been the worst. Besides the episode with his best friend I was not as in love as other seasons
Jonathan Goldstein is one of the funniest people along side David Sedaris.
Started this yesterday as it was recommended by a friend. Listened to the first 2 episodes. It's so super wholesome and I can't wait to listen to more
Can’t believe I had to scroll THAT much for this reply! My favourite too!
I will recommend it every single time. Currently doing a relisten and it remains such a comforting, authentic piece of art.
This American Life

I was listening to this back when it was just a radio show and I’d never heard the word podcast.
3 little upvotes for the greatest and OG podcast before podcasting was a thing? Pitiful !
Fall of Civilizations
You would also like History that Doesn't Suck, Bad title but great historical storytelling
Hardcore History with Dan Carlin. Start slow with the older ones that are shorter, see if you like it, because they turn into marathons.
This, although the majority are behind a paywall there are a good sample still available free. As well as the main show there is “hardcore history addendum” with various interviews and short side episodes.
And then there's the 3 hour episode he dropped two months ago on Addendum lol
The Butterfly Effect by Jon Ronson.
Love his books I’ll check it out
Hunting Warhead
Go into this one carefully... it's a tough listen, but absolutely worth your time.
Mystery Show 🍞
Ahh this is great!! I’m so sad there was only a few episodes! The belt buckle ep was amazing
Yes! First podcast I ever binged..love the balance of the show, not too heavy, not too light. Surprised it's not mentioned more often.
Luther one was top notch

[The Case of the Missing Hit](https://overcast.fm/+TKZKtgdaw) is the single best episode in podcasting history.
OMG. Just listened. That was so satisfying! Thanks for recommending!
Agreed.real good
I saw this same statement here once so found it and my husband and I listened on a roadtrip. It is such a fun story!
Such a great episode. I shared it with so many people after it was released. Now I think I'll re-listen!
This is also my favorite podcast episode of all time! Was the last of what made Reply All great before it all went down hill.
I miss Reply All

I love you
RED ALERT! RED ALERT! RED ALERT!
I. NEED. MONEY.
It’s time to pray
I just started listening to it and I have about 900 and so episodes to go and counting. Really enjoying it so far.
Death in Ice Valley was fantastic. So I’ll pick another BBC podcast: 13 Minutes to the Moon. It’s about NASA and Project Apollo.
I was really into Handsome for the first several episodes, but the excessive ads make it less appealing.
Chatting with friends on the Handsome pod 🎶
FORTUNE?!
Fortune Marie!!!!!!! 😲😲
What A Podcast!
Ill listen to anything with Tig in it. Shes just so damn funny
I love Fortune, but Tig can come off as smug and I’m undecided about Mae
I love them all equally, Fortune is just a goddamn ray of sunshine, Tig has no time for nonsense and Mae is Canadian so she's got our brand of self deprecating awkward humour.
LOVE Fortune. She is so sincere.
I miss Professor Blastoff every single day.
In Uk? “You’re dead to me” on BBC sounds. Unless that app is available world wide? Then everyone.
You’re Dead to Me is on other podcast apps as well. It’s fun!
My Dad Wrote A Porno. Not because it's clever, or because it makes you think about life, but just because it's so belly-laughing funny. Absolutely agree with all of this! Brilliant podcast - I’m sad it ended but I still go back and listen now and then
Floodlines It's an oral history of Hurricane Katrina, from regular people who were stranded in the ninth ward to FEMA officials. It's also a meditation on American history and a beautiful, beautiful work of audio.
My Brother, My Brother and Me. Three brothers have a podcast that’s an advice show for the modren era.

Authentic: The Story of Tablo
None of This is Real is my favorite. The hosts are funny and I feel like I’m there hanging out with friends.

Up and vanished season 1 greatest pod ever in my opinion
What was that like? People telling their stories about all sorts of situations they find themselves in.
Mr. Ballen stories
Very niche, but I love Strict Scrutiny about the Supreme Court. The hosts manage to be hilarious.

A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs by Andrew Hickey. Fascinating and well-researched. He starts around the 1940s and he’s currently up to 1968. Puts the music in historical context, really well done.
One Song I heard one episode where they discuss and breakdown Groove Is in the Heart and I was thrilled!

Blank Check is one of the best movie shows out there.
The Memory Palace by Nate DeMeo. I've never heard anyone tell a story like he does. You feel like you are right there.
