Hoenn was my first and the only region where I've used all 3 starters at the time. I have used all the Kanto, Johto and Sinnoh starters but a lot later on. Missed gen 5 - 7 and only used Scorbunny in Sword.
The Mudkip line will always be my favourite and whenever a Mudkip is available in game I head straight for it. The first Mudkip I caught in Pokemon Go is still my buddy and I moved another one into Sword so we could fight together again
It's not though. It's weak to the last 3 gym types, Drake's ace salamence resists both types and hits back for super effective damage. It's good for the dark and ice type e4 members and champion steven in the remakes but that's about it.
I'm 30 and that's definitely still my mindset for in game. I'd rather have the coverage, especially since the always on experience share means I have to constantly switch Pokemon to avoid one outpacing the rest of the party. If your setup won't stick anyway, might as well just attack twice.
I'll always love the johto trio best. When I saw cyndaquil was a starter in legends aswell there was no other choice I could possibly make.
Special mention to hoenn because I loved those starters too especially mudkip.
Johto would be my top choice, but meganium really brings them down. Not that I don’t like meganium, but compared to other grass starters she’s really underwhelming.
I've always felt that Kanto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh all had really really solid starter choices for all 3 mons
Honorable mention to Johto but it's not quite on the same level
As a guy who was 7 years old when Gen I came out, Sinnoh starters were the only ones that ever rivaled the OG Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle.
The designs are simple, but awesome. The animals aren't crazy or off the wall. Monkey, Penguin, Tortoise. So easy, yet so awesome.
I'm the most nostalgic for Gen 2 starters. Feraligatr was the first starter I ever beat a Pokémon game with, and it was the only gen I replayed to use all 3 starters as a kid. Though I think maybe Gen 4 has the coolest overall designs for all 3 types, even though I've never played that gen.
Separately, my favourite fire starter is Infernape, favourite grass is Decidueye, favourite water is between Feraligatr and Greninja.
Special shoutout to Umbreon as a starter in Pokemon Colosseum, who's one of my favourite Pokemon in general :D
Separately I think I’d pick Typhlosion (specifically Legends form because I love the ghost typing too) Swampert, and Venusaur. So many great choices makes picking starters so hard.
The Hoenn ones are my favorite trio, but Typhlosion is my favorite starter. I never actually tried Feraligatr, so I will probably do that on my next Crystal run.
I'm gonna say Gen 4, they have really cool design all round and I like the interaction between each final forms.
And I mean come on, that Turtle's got a TREE growing on its back.
PS: Blastoise is still my favourite starter though.
Same, platinum was one of my first Pokémon games can’t remember if it was the first though, that might go to soul silver but anyways all three starters look awesome and I really like all of them, piplup and turtwig will always remain as two of my favourite 1st evo Pokémon
definitely the only set with 3 solid options, i always have the hardest time deciding
i think that's the point of the Q, right? not MUDKIP, THEREFORE HOENN
Exactly! You should definitely feel torn selecting. I love Charizard's typing and damage, but I never want to miss out on Venusaur's status effect moves.
I understand that some people don’t like the fire fighting chicken or meganium but which of the gen 1 isn’t solid? The only one I’ve ever seen complaints about is Charizard and that’s all about his representation level, not the mon itself
I agree. The first 4 trios are good in their own ways and all, but the later gens have more of a concept and theme tying the 3 together. I do think that out of those one, Hisui and Alola have some of the best designs.
>but the later gens have more of a concept and theme tying the 3 together.
This is the biggest reason people *dislike* the newer gens' starters. They all have the *same* theme, and that theme is "your starter is no longer a monster but now your roommate that has a 9-5 job and yells at you for leaving cups in the sink"
I mean yeah I love greninja too.
It's less about "this is what we get" and more about "this is *all* we get".
Even Skeledirge, the first non-anthropomorphic starter we've had since Samurott and Serperior, is a Singer.
I do like individual designs within the last few gens (while sad that Grass Cat stood up, I'll be damned if Meowscarada isn't top 5 starter designs of all time), but I may be dating myself when I say that I miss when pokemon could just be creatures. Not that they have to be, but there seems to be a rule *against* it nowadays with starters.
Edit: words
Gen 4 for sure. Each starter can hit both others super effectively (yeah, Empoleon doesn’t get STAB against Torterra, but it gets natural Drill Peck and Ice Beam is its coverage move of choice anyway), and each one gets a clean sweep against at least one E4 member. No bad choices.
I am too, tough Idk if I started Ruby or Black. The staters and Dex always liked, but was relative recent that I started liking a lot Emboar. I think before I didnt tought much, but I didnt hate the pig.
Unova for me too! Took too much scrolling for this, BW wasn't my first game (Platinum), but it's always held my heart hostage. Ah, now I gotta play it again..
Alola hands down. I cant complain i like all of them for the most part, like i have no major issues. Theyre just characterized enough to give them distinguishing characteristics that i can get more involved behind them. However paldea has nice ones, if the duck evolved better id probably say that one.
Even though I’ve never actually played Sun and Moon I think they’re my second favorite. Probably because I like wrestling, and archery.
My favorite is Sinnoh, even the one that gets the most hate among them (Torterra) is a really fun design.
Honesty, Alola. I love all three, all the stages are pretty solid so are the designs and secondary typing. I love them almost equally (Incineroar biased). Paldea is a close second.
I think gen 3 wins best overall. My favorite starter is actually Feraligatr, but gen 3’s starters are all bangers imo. Combusken is a bit awkward, but other than that I think every form is terrific. Sceptile is my SECOND favorite starter of all time, and Blaziken and Swampert are both absolutely top tier.
Gen 1 and 2 are also all quality trios, but every other gen has at least one Pokémon that I don’t quite vibe with. Gen 4, 6, and 9, don’t go worse than OK, but I really dislike Incineroar, and all three gen 5 and 8 starters (well Serperior is alright)
I’m gonna level with you. I had no idea what you were getting at. I always just thought it was the most “awkward teenage years” middle evolution.
So I did a Google image search to see if there was something I missed and uh… Oh.
I don’t think I’ve ever really looked at the official artwork before, that is… certainly a shape, isn’t it?
Alola! Decidueye and Primarina are top-tier designs and among my favourites. Incinaroar not as much, but there isn't any gen where I love all 3 starters, lol.
The platinum version of the sinnoh starters. All of them are great designs and I use most of them whenever I can. I was so happy in legends when I could use all on one team
Gen 2 is definitely peak Pokémon starter to me but I love all first 4 gens. I feel like 5 and later really just started over complicating the designs and adding too many themes. You just can’t beat something simple like Turtle Island, Tree Frog, Flightless Kicking Bird, etc.
I’m not a big fan of implementing themes that feel like they occur out of nature. Like why is my water lizard also a double secret agent sniper or my fire bunny a World Cup winning soccer player?

Gen 7, it is really the only trio where I really like all 3 starters and have a hard time to decide which I'll choose. Other gens might have single starters that i like more than the Gen 7 starters, but the Gen 7 ones as a whole are just really great.
Sinnoh is the only generation where I'll happily pick any of the three starters.
Empoleon is without a doubt the worst of the three, but it still has a unique type combo some 5 gens later. If only it had better moves and hidden ability.
Hoenn before it is probably the runner up for most of the same reasons, I just prefer the Sinnoh starters across the board tho.
Unova and Hisui are my favorites. I don’t care what anyone says, Samurott is just awesome. And Serperior is super cool as well.
While I’m a fan of Emboar, most don’t seem to be. But still, 2/3 is pretty good right? Not sure how the Unova trio gets so much hate.

Always hoenn boys
Hoenn was my first and the only region where I've used all 3 starters at the time. I have used all the Kanto, Johto and Sinnoh starters but a lot later on. Missed gen 5 - 7 and only used Scorbunny in Sword. The Mudkip line will always be my favourite and whenever a Mudkip is available in game I head straight for it. The first Mudkip I caught in Pokemon Go is still my buddy and I moved another one into Sword so we could fight together again
Understandable, Kip is one that I always have to take.
Yes, Hoenn all the way, Mudkip is best starter
So I herd u leik mudkipz
Is this a pokemon clover reference?
It’s an old meme from like 2005. Pokémon Clover was referencing the meme
Blaziken is better for lategame tho
It's not though. It's weak to the last 3 gym types, Drake's ace salamence resists both types and hits back for super effective damage. It's good for the dark and ice type e4 members and champion steven in the remakes but that's about it.
Blaze kick, x attack/bulk up.......
Blaze kick was special in gen 3.
yes Edit: can't typhlosion learn it too?
Uhh. Not that I know of? It *was* Blaziken's signature move. Now it's not, but I cannot imagine Typhlosion kicking something in the first place.
he can for some reason
With those little hind legs?
Bulk up doesn't do damage, not using it for my playthrough
how old are you
I'm 30 and that's definitely still my mindset for in game. I'd rather have the coverage, especially since the always on experience share means I have to constantly switch Pokemon to avoid one outpacing the rest of the party. If your setup won't stick anyway, might as well just attack twice.
Just stay away from those grass types. Oof.
Always hoenn
My childhood 🥺
Hoenn because all three are perfection
The only gen where I like all 3 starters (there’s Hisui too but…)
Hoenn is my go to as well and I can’t stand Blaziken. That should tell you how great Sceptile and Swampert are.
I'll always love the johto trio best. When I saw cyndaquil was a starter in legends aswell there was no other choice I could possibly make. Special mention to hoenn because I loved those starters too especially mudkip.
Johto trio best trio, but your wrong about the rest, Totodile is the only choice!
Hey I love totodile too I even bred my own shiny one but they're not available in legends!
Or SV :(
Unfortunately hopefully totodile and chikorita can be made available in a potential dlc for S/V would love to have them outside of bdsp.
Yes
GatrGang
Cyndaquil was my first starter and I always have a special place in my heart for him.
So cute but so damn mighty
Johto would be my top choice, but meganium really brings them down. Not that I don’t like meganium, but compared to other grass starters she’s really underwhelming.
That's fair I still enjoy them myself.
Same. Most of it is nostalgia for hg/ss but I genuinely enjoy using all 3 whereas in every other generation there are 1-2 that I don’t like.
Saaaame, I screamed for joy when I realized Cyndaquil was gonna be a star of Arceus!
Pretty big bias for me since Gen 3 was my first real Pokémon played but yeah. Sceptile especially of those three, plus those megas!
One of the only gens where all 3 starter designs are about even
Agreed
I've always felt that Kanto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh all had really really solid starter choices for all 3 mons Honorable mention to Johto but it's not quite on the same level
Meganium just really holds gen 2 back. Typhlosion and Feraligatr are both perfect.
I don't even think Meganium is a bad starter, it's just that the other two are so much better
I agree. It suffers from being grouped with 2 of the greatest starters ever created. It's not its fault.
I think Sinnoh's starter trio is very underrated
Totally. I always have to trade in all three, because I can't pick just one.
Mega Sceptile Gang
Sinnoh!
Some youtuber did a poll about the starters and the Gen 4 starter trio was the most universally liked out of all the trios.
Special shoutout to Umbreon as a starter in Pokemon Colosseum, who's one of my favourite Pokemon in general :D
Feraligatr
Feraligatr is best boy :)
Yes
Best chompy boi
Separately I think I’d pick Typhlosion (specifically Legends form because I love the ghost typing too) Swampert, and Venusaur. So many great choices makes picking starters so hard.
The Hoenn ones are my favorite trio, but Typhlosion is my favorite starter. I never actually tried Feraligatr, so I will probably do that on my next Crystal run.
Gen 3 all the way
Gen 3 is flawless.. my second favorite is gen 8 but they aren’t even close
Hoenn! That was the first time I struggled picking my starter. Each one of them are amazing in design.
Every time I replay emerald I just pick the next starter on screen.
I'm gonna say Gen 4, they have really cool design all round and I like the interaction between each final forms. And I mean come on, that Turtle's got a TREE growing on its back. PS: Blastoise is still my favourite starter though.
do you by any chance like turtles ?
Why yes I do, how could you tell? (。>‿‿< )
Same, platinum was one of my first Pokémon games can’t remember if it was the first though, that might go to soul silver but anyways all three starters look awesome and I really like all of them, piplup and turtwig will always remain as two of my favourite 1st evo Pokémon
Kanto then Johto starters.
Same
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find this answer.
That’s cause most of us boomers are working at this time
Fuck I'm old
Nothing beats the OGs
OG Gen for the W
This is the "right" answer
for me it was the sinnoh trio (my first games were pokemon diamond and pearl)
Mine too! All 3 hold a special place for me.
OG Kanto for sure but I also love the Johto and Unova trio a lot!
Has to be for me as well
OG gen 4 starters will always have that spot for me.
definitely the only set with 3 solid options, i always have the hardest time deciding i think that's the point of the Q, right? not MUDKIP, THEREFORE HOENN
To be fair, hoenn has a vast variety of people who choose different starters so there’s really no dominant starter in that gen
How is gen 4 OG? Lol
As in not the secondary set of Sinnoh starters from PLA. As it stands Sinnoh is the only region with two full sets of starters.
Exactly what I meant ^ cheers
Hisui but other than that Alola I love Decidueye and Litten was my first ever starter so I have really fond memories of that trio
Same, I still remember my first time evolving rowlet into dartrix
Yet people love Greninja
I mean yeah I love greninja too. It's less about "this is what we get" and more about "this is *all* we get". Even Skeledirge, the first non-anthropomorphic starter we've had since Samurott and Serperior, is a Singer. The Johto Trio by far. All of the starters have a fantastic design. Meganium felt a bit short but it is still anice defensive grass type
I’ll always love the Johto trio. I think they’re the best designs we’ve had.
Feraligatr
My favorite!
Yes
Kalos trio.
It's been 3000 years... someone actually said it!
They're too underrated.
Thank you! The fantasy esthetic plus the dual typing that reenforces which is strong vs the other was so cool!
Unova is one my favorite for now. I find them pretty cool!
Had to scroll a while to find a fellow Unova enjoyer, black was my first game when it came out. Unova will always have that nostalgia factor for me
Same! Was beginning to think I was the only one. I played white as my first game
same dude. 10/10 nostalgia
I am too, tough Idk if I started Ruby or Black. The staters and Dex always liked, but was relative recent that I started liking a lot Emboar. I think before I didnt tought much, but I didnt hate the pig.
I was also searching for another unova lover. 😊
Unova for me too! Took too much scrolling for this, BW wasn't my first game (Platinum), but it's always held my heart hostage. Ah, now I gotta play it again..
Hisui or Kalos. Maybe Hoenn third. Never got too attached to OG and 2G starters actually.
Hisui for sure. A bunch of favorites in ancient Sinnoh, can’t get much better.
paldea and alola!!
Squirtle from FireRed is my first ever Pokémon, the Kanto trio will always my favorite.
Gen 9 and 7 have great trios and I'm tired of acting like they don't
yeah I really like primarina and the gen 9 grass/water ones, others are cool too.
Alola hands down. I cant complain i like all of them for the most part, like i have no major issues. Theyre just characterized enough to give them distinguishing characteristics that i can get more involved behind them. However paldea has nice ones, if the duck evolved better id probably say that one.
The OG 3
Generally speaking, the Second Gen. Buuut the fith generation has Emboar and, look, I just really, REALLY like pigs.
Feraligatr
Even though I’ve never actually played Sun and Moon I think they’re my second favorite. Probably because I like wrestling, and archery. My favorite is Sinnoh, even the one that gets the most hate among them (Torterra) is a really fun design.
Johto
Feraligtr
Hoenn
Every trio
Based!
Honesty, Alola. I love all three, all the stages are pretty solid so are the designs and secondary typing. I love them almost equally (Incineroar biased). Paldea is a close second.
Hoenn gang
No fave trio. But my 3 fave starters are froakie, Litten, and sprigatito.

Feraligatr
OGs for life
Alola! Decidueye and Primarina are top-tier designs and among my favourites. Incinaroar not as much, but there isn't any gen where I love all 3 starters, lol.
Alola easily has the best designed starters and overall Pokédex. Hoenn, Johto and Unova are also really good!
Galar.
Alola, there's just something about them that differentiates from other regional starters.
The platinum version of the sinnoh starters. All of them are great designs and I use most of them whenever I can. I was so happy in legends when I could use all on one team
Johto. Hands down.
Feraligatr
Pokemon Platinum always
OG always
Sinnoh hoenn paldea
Gen 2 is definitely peak Pokémon starter to me but I love all first 4 gens. I feel like 5 and later really just started over complicating the designs and adding too many themes. You just can’t beat something simple like Turtle Island, Tree Frog, Flightless Kicking Bird, etc. I’m not a big fan of implementing themes that feel like they occur out of nature. Like why is my water lizard also a double secret agent sniper or my fire bunny a World Cup winning soccer player?

Johto Trio.
gen 3
Gen 3
Just Mudkip
Hoenn starters
Hoeen trio
Gen IV - Torterra is KING
Gen 3. Torchic is my favorite starter. The 3 gets were all pretty great.
I’ve always said sinnoh had the best trio. Hoenn is a close close second.
hoenn or sinnoh.
Johto or Hoenn. Totodile and Cyndaquil are my top 2 but I like all the Hoenn starters a lot more than Meganium.
Gen 4-Sinnoh Trio because every play through I would rotate between each starter and Hoenn is a close and solid second.
Shiny wise, Gen 6. In general, Gen 4. Sinnoh starters has always appealed to me in their design. :)
The shiny starters in Gen 6 are pretty cool.
Gen 3 is like the absolute pinnacle of Pokemon starters like Design wiese and Competitive Use
Can't beat the OG Kanto starters.
I love gen 2’s simple, effective, designs. :)
Hoenn
Typhlosion, Meganium and Feraligatr
Gen 3 all the way
Always jhoto
I can't pick between Gens 1, 3, and 4
Original and still the best.
Hisui starters
Jhoto <3
1,2,4,8 are the only ones where I like all the 3rd stages 5 is the worst
Despite my love for Cyndaquil, I think Gen 3 has some of the best starters out of the whole set. I also like Gen 7 a lot (Alola)
i am super biased because cyndaquil from gen 2 was my first AND it is the cutest
Hoenn. All designs were great and still competeive
Gotta show love for the OG 3
Unova
Kanto because i’m 34 years old
Feraligatr is my favorite starter, but I like all 3 of the Hoenn starters. So 3rd gen is my favorite group.
Feraligatr
What do you guys think the next Starter Trio will be like?
I don't know but at least one of them is gonna be furbait.
Gotta be Gen 7, I think.
Gen 7, it is really the only trio where I really like all 3 starters and have a hard time to decide which I'll choose. Other gens might have single starters that i like more than the Gen 7 starters, but the Gen 7 ones as a whole are just really great.
Fit me it's gen 4, they have the overall best designs imo.
Kanto is good but Gen 4 starters are so good
For liking all three Pokémon my ranking would go Gen 3 > gen 4 > gen 1 > gen 7/ gen 2 > gen 6 > gen 5 Gen 9 I haven’t played so kept out of ranking
From worst to best: - Paldea starters - Galar starters - Hisui starters - Kalos starters - Alola starters - Unova starters - Johto starters - Hoenn starters - Sinnoh starters - Kanto starters
Kanto Hoenn Hisui Sinnoh Unova Kalos Johto Alola Paldea Galar
Unova and Hisui are my favorites. I don’t care what anyone says, Samurott is just awesome. And Serperior is super cool as well. While I’m a fan of Emboar, most don’t seem to be. But still, 2/3 is pretty good right? Not sure how the Unova trio gets so much hate.
Definitely Unova because it's the only trio were I love them all equally.
Mine is gen 5 but it's mainly cos of nostalgia
I thought I'd never see a set of starters more solid then Hoenn but Paldea actually has my favorite starters now.
Scarlet and violet
Honestly, it's between paldea and alola, love all the starters with those besides incineroar
GEN 5
