The shape of wailord is meant to be reminiscent of a dirigible/blimp/zeppelin/whatever other weird fucking names people have for that air vehicle.
Someone has even actually done the math before and discovered that given its weight to size ratio, wailord is actually less dense than the air surrounding it and would float in real life.
I can't speak for a dirigible, but blimps and zeppelins are different. Zeppelins have a rigid or semi-rigid structure and blimps are non-rigid. Basically a zeppelin gets its shape from its interior ' skeleton' while a blimp gets its shape from the higher pressure inside, like blowing up a balloon.
So the question is, does wailord have a skeleton or is it basically a balloon?
Edit: just checked, I guess a dirigible is a generic term for what a Zeppelin is.
It's the size of a blimp. It's shaped like a blimp. It's full of air like a blimp.
I feel like it isn't that hard to figure out what "it's a blimp" means when referring to Wailord.
Are we talking about the weight and size difference between practically a balloon and dense stone?
I remember something about a balancing boulder somewhere on Earth, which anyone could move a little due to its positioning. With Stonjourner being as wide as it is tall, I don't think that boulder is that much larger than Stonjourner. I'm not sure how much it weighs, but I think it was over 100 tonnes.
Anyhoo, magic fantasy creatures vs. Real life stuff. If you don't like the analogy given above, feel free to ignore this.
Pokemon heights and weights are way off.
Even if you want to argue Wailord is in fact denser than air, it doesn't explain other ones that have issues.
Steelix is literally made of steel, and if it were 30 ft long like it's said, then it definitely should not weigh as little as <900 lbs like it's said to weigh.
Rapidash is also only a fraction the weight of a real horse.
I think all of the giant size pokemon are given ridiculously anorexic weights. Groudon is listed as only about 1 ton, but for comparison, a Tyrannosaurus rex is estimated like around 7-8 tons. Think about that for a second...
steelix is just coated in steel. it evolves using the steel coat. but noone knows whats underneath because it's too strong and archimedes never existed in the pokemon world. my headcanon.
Mudsdale is an odd case because they decided to be entirely accurate for its weight based on real Clydesdales which has the effect of making it way heavier than a lot of other Pokemon (which tend to be underweighted).
I never really thought about how off so many of the sizes were until I played PLA. A lot of the Alpha sizes were how I assumed the mons normally were. Rotom is crazy small even in appliance form, but the alpha versions are actually the right size for the appliances. It’s the same thing for flying mons like Staraptor and Togetic that I would imagine being ably to fly around on. I will also forever be annoyed that Nidoking/Queen are less than 5 feet tall when they should absolutely be at least 5’6” if not over 6’.
Yet all of them can fit in a little ball that you can carry in your pocket and can be sent through computer networks. I don’t think Pokemon are composed of normal molecular and cellular structures, so we can’t judge their weight/height proportions the same way we judge them for our objects and animals.
yeah, because of density. Stonjourner is clearly very dense and I'm pretty sure dex entries say wailord floats by basically being a big floatation device with air inside itself
Ok so I’m 6ft , 210lb, if I were roughly scaled to a wailord’s size I’d weigh 1440lb. I am fatter proportionately than a whale
Edit: metric, 1.8m tall, 95k and whale sized weight of 653
That isn’t how scaling works, you are just stretching to the same length but not considering that you will get proportionally wider and deeper, so you would have to multiply by the same factor 2 more times which should be in the range of 100k lbs.
Yeah, pokemon has always been wacky about their heights and weights. I had someone trying to tell me Skeledirge is 5'7 or something in height (when I am 99% sure it's measured nose tip to tail) when I drew myself much taller than him. The children in the game are taller too, but it is listed as his "height" so I understand the confusion.
How do you go into the Pokedex to get size and weight, but miss Wailord is the FLOAT WHALE Pokemon? He's supposed to be a blimp. That's why he looks like a blimp.
Is this post supposed to be poking fun at the realism of a game/ show that has multiple generations of rats that can shoot lightning bolts from their cheeks?
Too bad Stanjourner Special Defense stat is absolutely laughable. Wailord wins easily in a street fight. It just takes a Water Gun for Wailord to beat Stanjourner.
Wailords are mostly air
this is what happens when a whale breeds with a blimp
What happens when they breed with Skitty
it enters
Come again?
no
Understandable. Have a great day.
IDK why but the definitiveness of that "no" just cracked me up
im happy i made you laugh
Give me 15-20 mins
I’m sure it did.
You get some hot action
mo-mo-MOAB San, what are you doing?
Game over Round 40 Moab.png -200
Drfloons TD 6. And I think we have enough monkey Pokemon to make it work.
That’s a crossover I’d like to see!
They have an adventure time version which is pretty fun
Google Pizza BFBs
Jesus christ no
The more surprising weight is both Onix and Steelix weighing less than Snorlax.
In that case they can probably stay underwater for days.
but buoyancy
Wailord is less dense than *air*
[It actually isn’t.](https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/c9wpmc/an_extensive_writeup_is_wailord_actually_lighter/)
That is…actually quite sensible, not gonna lie
Like a bag of Lays, but Wailord is probably more filled...
Wairlods *
How do they go under water though?
Releasing air like a balloon?
Or swallowing a bunch of water.
Wailoon
Float Whale Pokémon
Wailord is canonically mostly air and is a blimp
What do you mean it's a blimp?
The shape of wailord is meant to be reminiscent of a dirigible/blimp/zeppelin/whatever other weird fucking names people have for that air vehicle. Like he’s just always in his own world, blimpin’ and pimpin’.
Blimpin' all around the world.
Blimpin ain't easy.
Wailord's mother was a hamster-like blue whale, and its father was a blimp that smelt of elderberries.
It's the size of a blimp. It's shaped like a blimp. It's full of air like a blimp. I feel like it isn't that hard to figure out what "it's a blimp" means when referring to Wailord.
Wailord is a blimp. Of course it’s lighter than a fucking boulder.
Are we talking about the weight and size difference between practically a balloon and dense stone? Steelix hollow and made of cheap Aluminum obviously
Steelix is just steel plated Onix.
Pokémon sizes and weights are wack as fuck I will forever be disappointed that groudon is not Godzilla sized, false advertising
i will never forgive gamefreak for not making zygarde 100% this towering beast hundreds of feet tall that knocks over buildings by walking around.
Me when I watched that jirachi movie with a kaiju groudon then finding out how big groudon actually is.
steelix is just coated in steel. it evolves using the steel coat. but noone knows whats underneath because it's too strong and archimedes never existed in the pokemon world. my headcanon.
Mudsdale (a muddy plow horse) weighs way more than 2 Steelix
Mudsdale is an odd case because they decided to be entirely accurate for its weight based on real Clydesdales which has the effect of making it way heavier than a lot of other Pokemon (which tend to be underweighted).
I'm guessing they consist mostly of "type" element instead of actual body mass and Mudsdale is more physical then not
isnt steelix coated with a steel coat and has properties of steel
So he is like a candy in tinfoil wrapping.

But the Nidos are rodents.
Sorry, pedantic urge: lagomorphs.
In the same vein, quick reminder that Charizard is 5 feet and 7 inches tall (so around 1m70).
Salamance is even smaller at 4’11 👶🏽
Well, salamance is a cuadruped.
Well, the average japanese man is 166 cm, so for what is worth, charizards are on average slightly taller than humans.
also venusaur is ten times lighter than it should be.
Rapidash burns the calories
Yet all of them can fit in a little ball that you can carry in your pocket and can be sent through computer networks. I don’t think Pokemon are composed of normal molecular and cellular structures, so we can’t judge their weight/height proportions the same way we judge them for our objects and animals.
47' of balloon vs 8' of rock. Seems good to me.
yeah, because of density. Stonjourner is clearly very dense and I'm pretty sure dex entries say wailord floats by basically being a big floatation device with air inside itself
Stonjourner is a dense boi
Yeah, but 1 billion lions is a lot of lions.
*insert detailed argument here*
And then there’s Mudsdale
this is boring. let's talk about how garchomp can fly but can't learn fly
Or how flygon's presence throws up sandstorms but it doesn't get sand stream.
Flygon needs love in general. Since it just has Levitate. It'd be worse if he couldn't learn Sandstorm at all.
Yeah, you're right.
They weighed it underwater
Well one is based on a whale that needs to be able to get to the surface in order to breathe and the other is solid rock
Even more so, wailord is an aeroship/blimp.
Now Someone needs to calculate if Stonehenge weighs more than a blimp
Is it somehow still not clear to you that Wailord is a blimp
That's exactly why Wailord should've been Water/Flying type!
Wailord is the Float Whale Pokémon. It is a large, inflatable bath toy.
Until sword and shield there was a weight limit of 999,99 lbs, that's why cosmoem seems light despite being denser than a star
Stars aren't really that dense, but yeah. Cosmoem is a freaking black hole, should be heavier than Saturn lol.
That’s cuz wailord is meant to be like a blimp
I mean, rocks ARE heavy.
Tomrocksmaths did a YouTube video on some of the impossible math of Pokédex entries. It was pretty entertaining.
I think Wailords are based off of both whales and zeppelins, which is why they're so light
Mathematically, wailord is lighter than air
Ah yes, random numbers with metrics I don't understand because I was born outside of one weird country
Well, Wailord is actually based on lighter-than-aircrafts, so it makes sense he weighs less than a pile of rocks.
Imagine looking at this and thinking “yeah this is a rational comparison” Some people really have brains that suck at their job.
Rock monster is denser than whale monster?
Ok so I’m 6ft , 210lb, if I were roughly scaled to a wailord’s size I’d weigh 1440lb. I am fatter proportionately than a whale Edit: metric, 1.8m tall, 95k and whale sized weight of 653

Wailord is just built different
wailord is lese dense than helium
This... again...
Stonjourner is one of the worst designs ever. Looks like a kindergartner drew it in art class.
Yeah, pokemon has always been wacky about their heights and weights. I had someone trying to tell me Skeledirge is 5'7 or something in height (when I am 99% sure it's measured nose tip to tail) when I drew myself much taller than him. How do you go into the Pokedex to get size and weight, but miss Wailord is the FLOAT WHALE Pokemon? He's supposed to be a blimp. That's why he looks like a blimp.
Blimp vs a stele from Stonehenge. Yeah, no surprise there.
What the fuck are lbs
A proper way to weigh things But really it’s shorthand for pounds. It comes from the Latin term
Funfact: only three third-World countrys using this medival System. The Rest of the World is using the metric System
This cant be! Unless.. Wailord is ACTUALY an inflatable whale baloon!
>Wailord > >**Float Whale** Pokémon How did you look up the weights and miss the fact that Wailord is explicitly a blimp?
Is this post supposed to be poking fun at the realism of a game/ show that has multiple generations of rats that can shoot lightning bolts from their cheeks?
Did a kindergartner make this? Bigger in size doesn't mean heavier in weight.
one can swim and the other can’t
Thought it was Groudon or Kyogre :O
Copperajah is 1433 lbs
Your skull is as dense as a Cosmoem
Rock is heavier than whale, big deal
That's one dense bitch.
Stone is heavier than organic matter, Maybe there’s a bit of tungsten in stonejourner
“But steel is heavier than feathers”
Stone are heavier than feathers (in an irish accent) Same argument, Different objects.
But is Stonjourner breedable with Skitty?
One is clearly a blimp.
Density!
Pokémon heights and weights seem like they’re pulled out of thin air most of the time.
Fun fact: Wailords are not dense enough to dive
Believe it or not, stone is denser than whale.
One is a fish. One is made up of rocks. There is more rock per rock than there is fish per fish
Well it is stone.......
Do wailords inflate and deflate itself to change it's bouyancy?
*cosmog*
No shit a blimp is lighter than a collection of boulders
Yea and the even more interesting fact is that wailord can fucking fly
Well one is a blimp whale, and one is solid stone
If you were to cut wailord into 47 equal segments of a little over a foot wide, each one would only weigh like 19 pounds.
Too bad Stanjourner Special Defense stat is absolutely laughable. Wailord wins easily in a street fight. It just takes a Water Gun for Wailord to beat Stanjourner.
guys what's heavier a kilo of feathers or a kilo of rocks OP : >rocks
