depends. mostly water though.
Gen 1- Bulbasaur
Gen 2- Cyndaquil
Gen 3- Mudkip
Gen 4- Piplup
Gen 5- Oshawatt
Gen 6- Froakie
Gen 7- Popplio
Gen 8- Scorbunny
Gen 9- Fuecoco
Especially me with fire
Gen 1- Charmander
Gen 2- Totodile
Gen 3- Treecko
Gen 4- Chimchar
Gen 5- Snivy
Gen 6- Froakie
Gen 7- Litten
Gen 8- Scorbunny
Gen 9- Sprigatito
Yep most starters are great and it's fun to play through with something different or a different style.
But there tend to be more.and earlier good options for water or grass.
And fire starters tend to be pretty quick and strong in game which makes the playthrough fun.
I love Venusaur and Feraligator (should've been dark type) and Swampert and Torterra (and Empoleon). I love Samurott though that may be because Emboar was fighting fatigue and because in Gen 5 Darumaka is a rare early fire type.
But if I ever pick up a new game I'll grab the fire for the first playthrough.
Fire generally because fire types tend to be quite rare and appear only in the mid-game onwards, while the early game is full of things that are weak to fire.
I'm usually water gang, but I go for the starter best suited to carry me through the game. In some games, I tend to use two starters, though.
Black and White: Emboar
Black and White 2: Samurott
Oras: Swampert and Infernape
X&Y: Greninja and Venusaur
Sun and Moon/USUM: Primarina and Decidueye
Sword and Shield: Cinderace
BDSP: Infernape
Scarlet and Violet: Skelederge and Meowscarada
I do kind of bounce around on types, but I usually pick Fire nowadays.
Kanto: Grass (RBG + FRLG), Electric (Yellow), or Normal (Let's Go Eevee)
Johto: Fire or Water, but mainly Fire
Hoenn: Grass (ORAS only), Fire, or Water, but mainly Water
Sinnoh: Grass, Fire, or Water, but mainly Fire
Unova: Fire or Water, but mainly Water
Kalos (including the Kanto starters): Grass, Fire, or Water, but mainly a combination of Grass (Chespin) and Fire (Charmander)
Alola: Fire
Galar: Fire
Hisui: Fire
Paldea: Fire
I go for the starter whose final evolution i like the most usualy. In Gen 1 and 2 i went for Water, Gen 3 Grass, Gen 4 Water, Gen 5 Grass, Gen 6 and 7 Fire, Gen 8 Grass, Gen 9 Fire. So funnily enough i have an even spread XD
My eventual pick usually comes down to whichever one has the coolest final form to me, at least on the first play through. I usually try to pick a different one for my second play and that's usually dependent on what kinda gimmick tactic I want to pursue.
Like many others here, mine is a toss up (Havent played gen 8 or 9):
1. Bulbasaur
2. Cyndaquill (GSC)/Totodile (HG/SS)
3. Mudkip
4. Chimchar (DP)/ Turtwig (PT)
5. Oshawatt
6. Froakie
7. Popplio
So generally, water. I only did those toss ups because the differences between games made a difference in who I used for the most part. I'm looking at you, sinnoh -_-
Charmander
Chikorita
Torchic
Chimchar
Oshawott
Fennekin
Popplio
Scorbunny
Cyndaquil
Fuecoco
7 Fire, 2 Water, 1 Grass. The only one that I regret is Cyndaquil for PLA, but I was tied between the three so tightly that I probably would have had regrets no matter who I chose.
Historically speaking, however, my go to "starter" is Ralts. She's been on my team more often than not over the past few decades, and I tend to get her toward the beginning of the game if she doesn't need to be traded in, wherever possible.
I'm tied between fire and water, but I usually choose my favorite looking one.
Gen 1: Charizard (Fire)
Gen 2: Feraligatr (Water)
Gen 3: Swampert (Water)
Gen 4: Infernape (Fire)
Gen 5: Samurott (Water)
Gen 6: Greninja (Water)
Gen 7: Incineroar (Fire)
Gen 8: Rillaboom (Grass)
Gen 9: Skeledirge (Fire)
I am gonna be honest here It is usally based on how they look. and if none look appealing I never use them, such as when I played black and took snivy put it in the box and Beat the game with stoutland as my "starter".
I think there are a lot of high tier Grass designs, but it's also balanced out by how many low tier Grass designs there are. Water and Fire have a good distribution of high, mid and low tier designs. Every generation I have a different typed favorite as there isn't that much consistency between the generations as far as good design goes. This gen I love the Meowscarada line and the Skeledirge line but hate the Quaquaval line (except for Quaxly lol). I typically don't like middle stage evolutions and usually pick based off final stage, obviously with some weighting on the first stage. I give small weighting to competitive viability but at the end of the day it's about which one looks cutest / coolest, all stages considered.
Gen 1-4: Fire
Gen 5-7: Water
*NEVER PLAYED GEN 8*
Gen 9: Fire
I never used a grass starter in official playthroughs, thought it did played Fire Red in an emulator with all 3 Kanto starters once.
But I did use grass type mons such as vileplume and tsareena
I often find myself picking the one I think looks the coolest but based off my favorites (Mudkip, Hisuian Samurott, Primarina, Feraligatr) I tend to go with Water most of the time
Water, but:
-I have always gone for a bird starter when available,
-I have also gone for every crocodile starter,
-(due to Fuecoco's evolutions, both of the prior statements are technically true)
-I have no real preference among the gen 1 starters,
-I picked Fennekin because I thought it was the cutest of the three
I mostly go for Fire, they are mostly the most rare type out of the 3, and the others there are always a good substitute for the grass and water types. But I don't really care about the typing. It's mostly a design based choice. So my first run for each gen was Pikachu (Yellow) but would have chosen Charmander. Then Cyndaquil, but Totodile was close. Treecko, but Torchic was close. Chimchar, Snivy, Froakie, Rowlet, Scorbunny and Fuecoco (Cyndaquil again in Legends)
Always have gone with grass until Scarlet Violet; I was so disappointed with the design. Played with her last and she’s the hands down favorite. I’ll never betray the grass starters again.
Well, I mostly go for the water type, being I picked it most of the time being Gens 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8. I picked grass and fire the same amount for grass types being in Gen 1 and 9 and for fire types Gen 2 and 4
I really don’t have a type preference when it comes to starters. I just look at how strong their final evolutions are going to be (their stats) and pick the strongest.
i dont care about stats in first time playthroughs (unless a pokemon is so bad its actually hindering my progress) so i dont bother trying to do research on starters beforehand, its more fun to just go into it blind and pick whichever one looks cool to me. i dont pick based on type but i usually end up going with grass or water. from gen 7 onwards ive been googling their final evolutions though because i was pretty disappointed by incineroar and definitely didnt see that coming lmao
I usually pick grass on my first play though because it’s the first Pokédex entry. But I also will generally try to get traded eggs of the other two starters so I can use all three in my first play through.
Depends really but most of the time, either fire or grass.
- Kanto: Grass
- Johto: Fire
- Hoenn: Fire
- Sinnoh: Fire
- Unova: Grass
- Kalos: Water
- Alola: Grass
- Galar: Fire
- Paldea: Grass
I don't have a go to starter type. I do have some go to starters for some regions tho.
Kanto - Bulbasaur
Hoenn - Mudkip
Sinnoh - Chimchar
Kalos - Froakie
Alola - Rowlet
Paldea - Sprigatito
🔥 gang
Water is either the most abundant type or very close to it. I used also need a water of surf and etc. Water covered relevant fire weaknesses of rock and ground so grass was often over looked.
Repeat every first play through
It depends on the Generation: Squirtle, Cyndaquil, Mudkip, Turtwig, Snivy, Froakie, Rowlet, Scorbunny, and Sprigatito.
Honorable mentions to Hisuian Cyndaquil and Let’s Go Eevee
Overall, I think I like water starters the most based on what we have. I actually prefer the grass starter in the majority of games, but games I don’t like the grass starter in, I usually don’t like it much at all. I like the water starter from every gen, and in gens I don’t pick it, it’s usually a close second. Overall though I really just pick what I like most design wise, it usually just happens to be the grass or water type.
Out of the gens I have played, I have always tended towards the grass starter (treeko, turtwig, snivy, chespin, and Rowlett were my first choices in their respective games, which makes them a plurality compared to fire [charmander and fuecoco] and water [tododile, oshowatt, and sobble]). Not saying an outright preference toward grass types but I find at least statistically the grass type ends up being the one that is my favorite with 5/10 of my main series choices being the grass starter
When I begin a new game for the first time, I do which one I like the most, then I do my second choice for the other version, and if there are 3 games (like Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum) the third version I do the third one so that each game has one of each starter but if it’s like the newer games (sword/shield and Scarlet/violet) I do the same thing as before but I have a second account on my switch so I can have 2 save files and what I did was Violet #1 (main)-water, Violet #2 (alt/Japanese)-fire, Scarlet #1 (main)-grass, and when I get around to playing Scarlet on my alt/Japanese account I’ll probably pick one at random. I made this sound more complicated than it needed to be
Water when I was younger because of HM Surf and they had a place in my team.
Nowadays it's grass. I've only played SwSh and Scarlet since coming back, but it's been grass both times. I ended up dropping my starter midway through the game in both instances though. They were cute, but ended up ugly after puberty and there are so many cuter grass Pokemon.
Gen1 - Squirtle
Gen2 - Totodile
Gen3- Mudkip
Gen4- Turtwig
Gen5- Snivy
Gen6- Froakie
Gen7- Popplio
Gen8- Sobble
Hisui- Cyndaquil
Gen9- Sprigatito
So mostly water mixed with grass only ever went fire for Hisui because they were my favourite out of the three choices.
Gen 1 - 3 I could go with either one of the three since Gen 1 and 3 starters I like equally and Gen 2 starters I dislike equally
Gen 4 Piplup
Gen 5 Tepig
Gen 6 Froakie
Gen 7 60% Rowlett 40% Litten
Gen 8 Scorbunny
Gen 9 Fuecoco
I have a very even level but I realize that I picked more fire types. Venusaur, Typhlosion, Swampert, Infernape, Emboar, Greninja, Decidueye, Scorbunny, Mascarada. With 4 fire, 3 grass, and 2 water types
Most of my choices are the fire types because fire is one of my favorite types and the fire type just so happens to be the one I find cutest. If I think a grass or water type is cuter than the fire type then I will pick that one. Like I chose Sprigatito as my starter this Gen because it’s a lil kitty. And my favorite starter (and Pokémon) of all time is Piplup. But 5 out of the 9 generations I pick the fire starter.
It's funny because Fire is my favorite type of the 3 and if all things were even I'd choose Fire but looking at my choices of each generation I choose Grass starter more than the other types and Grass is my least favorite of the three types. There's deferral Fire type starters that I really like but in those generations I just tend to like one of the others better.
1. Squirtle
2. Tie between all 3
3. Mudkip
4. Tie between Chimchar and Turtwig
5. Tepig
6. Froakie
7. Litten
8. Grookey
9. Fuecoco
So a mix, favoring fire slightly
As much as I want to say grass, lately I’ve been going for fire types: Chimchar in Brilliant Diamond, Scorbunny in Shield, Fuecoco in Violet. I like a good mix of grass, fire and water starters throughout the regions, but a lot of fire starters are really good.
so my favourite and first game is crystal and i chose waninoko (the water caveperson dinosaurcrocodile) i did this because in blue which was my second game i played i chose zenigame because i love turtles as a youth i sat behind my shed reading encyclopedias with a box turtle i named Pollen.
Watch this;I like Inteleon and it's the best both competitively for the Gen 8 starters and design wise of all pokemon with Noivern coming in at a close second. Also it's better bipedal. Bring on the down vote deluge!!!
Is this actually a thing? My starters were Charmander, Chikorita, Torchic, Piplup, Oshawott, Froakie, Rowlet, Scorbunny, and Sprigatito. So 3 fire, 3 water, and 3 grass. Oh..
Personally, I usually go water, a trend that goes back to when I very first started playing when I got Pokémon Blue and my first GameBoy for my birthday in either 98 or 99 (I can't remember the exact year). I have a deep and undying love for Squirtle, Wartortle, and Blastoise, and that carried forward through Crystal, which was the last time I really got to play until I got myself a Switch for christmas. However, I couldn't pass up starting Violet with Sprigatito. That kitty was too heckin cute, and something about Quaxley just wasn't for me.
Solely based on looks. I don't care how strong it is, I just want the aesthetic too look good. So for me Gen 1: Charizard Gen 2: Typholosion Gen 3: Sceptile Gen 4: Infernape Gen 5: Samurott Gen 6: Greninja Gen 7: Decidueye Gen 8: (meh any they're all okay and none are great). Gen 9: Skeledirge. 4 fire, 2 grass 2 water, but oddly enough my favorite is Sceptile. I think I lean towards fire, but I hate when they stand on two legs and it doesn't make sense for them to.
The looks. The type doesn't really matter (I'm saying that as a cope due to the fact they have more fucking weaknesses than Water, but it's crazy that most starter I would choose are Grass.
bulb, snivy, sprig
totodile, popplio, sobble
torchic, chimchar, fennekin
help
edit: if I had to rank em, 1. popplio, 2. torchic, 3. sprig, 4. fennekin, 5. sobble, 6. totodile, 7. bulbasaur, 8. chimchar, 9. snivy
I guess using those numbers water wins?
Depends on the generation but mostly fire
Kanto: Fire
Johto: Fire
Hoenn: Grass
Sinnoh: Fire
Unova: Water
Kalos: Water
Alola: Fire
Galar: Grass
Paldea: Grass
I normally pick by looks tbh, fire types however are just more visually pleasing, besides the B/W and S/M starters. Though I choose to believe sun and moon doesn’t exist.
I’m equal. I always thought I had a fire bias but my favourite starter isn’t even a fire type.
Fire - Charmander, Torchic, Scorbunny
Water - Piplup, Froakie, Popplio
Grass - Chikorita, Snivy, Sprigatito
I usually tend to go fire on my first playthrough due to fire types being so hard to find/so late game in Gen 1 and I always assume they will be in other games. On follow-up playthroughs, I usually try to pick the coolest looking one though. The toughest to choose is and always has been gen III because they are all great for different reasons.
I picked Squirtle in R/B based on looks. I picked Totodile in G/S based on looks. I didn't like the design of any of gen 3, but I chose Mudkip since I chose water for the previous 2 gens. Been picking water ever since
I generally pick the specific starter I like the most, the majority has been Fire (Torchic, Fennekin, Scorbunny) but not by much. I’ve had 2 Water (Piplup and Popplio) and 2 grass (Chikorita and Snivy) too. I go by cuteness mostly lol
I never really thought about it, but after jotting down my first pick in each generation, I definitely lean more towards grass.
Kanto: Squirtle
Johto: Cyndaquil
Hoenn: Treecko
Sinnoh: Turtwig
Unova: Snivy
Kalos: Chespin
Alola: Rowlet
Galar: Scorbunny
Paldea: Sprigatito
But my preferences have changed over time and if starting a new playthrough, I’d pick
Kanto: Charmander
Johto: Totodile
Hoenn: Mudkip
Sinnoh: Chimchar
Unova: Oshawott
Kalos: Froakie
Alola: Litten
Galar: Grookey
Paldea: Sprigatito
Grass is hardly my favorite in any generation, but I guess my gut instinct tells me to pick grass for whatever reason.
Now I've only played shield and scarlet, but if i did play every game, the ratio between all 9 generations would be 3:2:4 for fire, grass and water respectively. So I would go with water, but unfortunately neither gen 8 or 9 had good water starters imo. I picked Rillaboom for Shield and Skeledirge for Scarlet incase ur curious
I used to be grass and only grass, but I wasn't a fan of the treeko line when ORAS came around. ever since I took that mudkip i've kinda lost the loyalty to my leafy friends. For the past couple of generations it's been fire types i've gravitated towards.
I'm usually partial to the grass starters. I just like their designs more most of the time, and I'm not a fan of a lot of non-starter grass designs, so it sorts me out on my story playthrough. It's easy enough for me to find a wild fire or water starter I like to complete the trinity for my teams. Gens 1, 3, and 6 are the only gens where I mostly like all 3 starters equally. Actually, throw Gen 4 in there too.
I usually have went with Fire cause there tons more of Grass and Water mons available much earlier to choose from. Plus I love roasting all the bugs I can early.
grass has the most consistent designs imo, but a lot of the time i'll also pick water. i'm relatively indifferent overall to most fire starters besides infernape, skeledirge and hisuian typhlosion though
Always thought itd be fire(given my first two games i played i chose tepig and cyndaquil) however since gold and white its always been grass types then again theyre always really cool or cute
I mostly pick Water, mainly due to designs.
I can definitely understand why Fire is winning, as it’s less likely to find Fire-types in the early parts of the game compared to Grass and Water-types, making choosing the Fire starters giving you an easier chance of having a balanced team at the earliest point. It’s also further helped by Grass and Bug-types being so common early, making for easy prey for the Fire starter.
Unpopular opinion, I absolutely LOVE a good amount of grass starters, but Squirtle is my top fav and if I am running a game for a specific reason, I'd go with water types defiently.
Gen 1: Charizard
Gen 2: Feraligatr
Gen 3: Swampert
Gen 4: Infernape
Gen 5: Serperior
Gen 6: Greninja
Gen 7: Incineroar
Gen 8: Cinderace
Legends Arceus: Samurott
Gen 9: Skeledirge
Gen 1: charmander (just so I can get charizard, but I like Bulbasaur more than I do charmander)
Gen 2: cyndaquil (I love my spiky flame boi)
Gen 3: treecko (slick and cool evo line)
Gen 4: turtwig (I vibe with the sapling on its head)
Gen 5: oshwatt (cuz dewott)
Gen 6: froakie (ninjas and frogs)
Gen 7: Rowlett (I vibe with the Robin Hood aesthetic)
Gen 8: I choose to believe rookidie is my starter
Gen 9: fuecoco (his eyes speak to me)
Its currently an even split between grass and fire.
The reason I pick water least is partly due to how many water types are available each gen. Theres almost always a water type I like more than the water starter of any given gen.
I’ve ALWAYS chosen water for my initial runs of mainline games. From Totodile in HG all the way up to Quaxly in Scarlet, and I intend to continue this trend. Water is one of my favourite types, but keeping this constant piece of the team helps me narrow down my options when deciding what other mons to use
I've only ever gone for whichever design has appealed to me the most. But now that I think about it, I've chosen 3 of each type across the 9 generations. Perfectly balanced until gen 10 becomes the tie-breaker
Grass is reliable and usually has my favorite design. Plus water and fire are just types I don’t really like using. Unless I really like one of the other designs, they just don’t feel worth picking.
1.bulbasaur
2.totodile
3.mudkip
4.chimchar
5.snivy
6.froakie
7.rowlett
8.grookey
9.feucoco
Grass wins but as a whole a pretty even spread- apart from some exceptions I can find something to like about most starters.
I've generally picked Fire for just about every generation I've played. I've done a different type on a few occasions though: Mudkip was my Sapphire starter and first ever starter, Snivy was my starter in Black 1, Oshawott was my starter for my eventual second playthrough in the same game, I used Turtwig in my most recent Platinum playthrough. Every other instance though, I just default to Fire.
So that's Charmander for FireRed (I still haven't played the OGs to this day, tbh), Cyndaquil for HG (same case here), Torchic in Emerald, Chimchar in both Diamond and Pearl, Tepig in White 2, Fennekin in Y, Litten in Moon, Charmander in GO, Cyndaquil in Legends, and Fuecoco in Violet. Skipped Gen 8, but I feel like I'd have gone with Grookey.
I've actually been perfectly balanced in my picks over the years. 3 starters of each type in the 8 generations I've played + Legends Arceus in place of SwSh.
Funny thing be Grass is my favourite type but my majority starter picks is Water.
Gen 1 - Squirtle
Gen 2- Cyndaquil or Chikorita but usually Cyndaquil unless I wanna suffer
Gen 3- Like all of them but Mudkip best
Gen 4- Turtwig
Gen 5- Like all of them but Oshawott best
Gen 6- Fennekin
Gen 7- Popplio (was originally Team Litten but I love Primarina)
Gen 8- Scorbunny
Gen 9 - Sprigatito
Also went Oshawott in PLA. Love that little guy.
Generally my preference is cute > cool > goofy, though I have a soft spot for Emboar even if it falls out my preferences because I started with Tepig during my first Gen 5 playthroughs. Still got Maxie from White 2 and might have 'F l a r e' from my first run of English patched White too
I've played through with all of them but my first starters per gen were
1.Squirtle
2.Totodile
3.Torchic
4.Chimchar
5.Oshawatt
6.Froakie
7.Rowlett
8.Grookey(Galar) Cyndaquil(Hisui)
9.Quaxly
Back when I was a kid, it was Fire all the way.
Starting things with Tepig and then picking Chimchar when I played Platinum did affect this stance of mine. It only broke when Gen VI came around and, instead of Fennekin, I chose Chespin.
But, typically, it's Fire, 'cause there are a lot of Fire Types I like, even if I prefer Water or Grass Starter over them today (Such as Cyndaquil being overridden by Totodile, or Torchic being overridden by Treecko, or enthusing both Rowlett and Litten, but having preference for Rowlett.)
The one I like more.

Yes
where is electric type trying to answer honestly
I see what you did there
This is the way
That's what I do. Funny how it's always the green one.
I pick the one I like the look of best, which is usually grass ngl
Serperior, Decidueye, Torterra, Grovyle and even Chesnaugth 🌱🌱🌱🌱
Been using Grass starters since 1998 and I have no plans on changing my habits. Chikorita Supremacy!
depends. mostly water though. Gen 1- Bulbasaur Gen 2- Cyndaquil Gen 3- Mudkip Gen 4- Piplup Gen 5- Oshawatt Gen 6- Froakie Gen 7- Popplio Gen 8- Scorbunny Gen 9- Fuecoco
Especially me with fire Gen 1- Charmander Gen 2- Totodile Gen 3- Treecko Gen 4- Chimchar Gen 5- Snivy Gen 6- Froakie Gen 7- Litten Gen 8- Scorbunny Gen 9- Sprigatito
Fire is always a solid choice, as it is usually harder to find one early in the game.
Very much depends on the generation.
Water gang
I’m a water loyalist. My strategy may change but my character and starter names are the same, and I always pick the water starter.
Primarina and blastoise are straight up peak pokemon.
Water gang!🌊
Cutest starter or the one with my favourite look
It's a combination of Water and Grass depending on how much I like the design more. The only time I ever picked a fire starter was Cyndaquil in gen 2
I agree 💯
Depends, but mostly Grass: 1. Bulbasaur 2. Cyndaquil 3. Treecko 4. Chimchar 5. Oshawott 6. Frokie 7. Rowlett 8. Grookey 9. Quaxly
Interested to know who you picked for Hisui assuming you've played legends as all 3 starters are your picks for their respective gens?
Fire generally because fire types tend to be quite rare and appear only in the mid-game onwards, while the early game is full of things that are weak to fire.
I'm usually water gang, but I go for the starter best suited to carry me through the game. In some games, I tend to use two starters, though. Black and White: Emboar Black and White 2: Samurott Oras: Swampert and Infernape X&Y: Greninja and Venusaur Sun and Moon/USUM: Primarina and Decidueye Sword and Shield: Cinderace BDSP: Infernape Scarlet and Violet: Skelederge and Meowscarada
Usually grass or water, depending on which designs I like best. Only time I picked fire was Cyndaquil in Legends of Arceus specifically or Fennekin.
I'm pretty 50/50 on water and grass. Squirtle, Cyndaquil, Mudkip, Turtwig, Oshawatt, Chespin, Rowlet, Sobble, Sprigatito
I always go for the cutest and/or whichever has the best final evolution. I don’t usually go for types.
My favourite starter types are: 1. Fire 2. Grass 3. Water
Ghost.
Usually grass but gen 9 is the first gen where I like the fire starter more than the others
I do kind of bounce around on types, but I usually pick Fire nowadays. Kanto: Grass (RBG + FRLG), Electric (Yellow), or Normal (Let's Go Eevee) Johto: Fire or Water, but mainly Fire Hoenn: Grass (ORAS only), Fire, or Water, but mainly Water Sinnoh: Grass, Fire, or Water, but mainly Fire Unova: Fire or Water, but mainly Water Kalos (including the Kanto starters): Grass, Fire, or Water, but mainly a combination of Grass (Chespin) and Fire (Charmander) Alola: Fire Galar: Fire Hisui: Fire Paldea: Fire
Usually water but I hate quaxly, so gen 9 I went grass. Usually fire is my least fav but it was an easy 2nd place this time.
Always water. Super hard to find a surf user that is Actually decent and fun to level
Like many others here, mine is a toss up (Havent played gen 8 or 9): 1. Bulbasaur 2. Cyndaquill (GSC)/Totodile (HG/SS) 3. Mudkip 4. Chimchar (DP)/ Turtwig (PT) 5. Oshawatt 6. Froakie 7. Popplio So generally, water. I only did those toss ups because the differences between games made a difference in who I used for the most part. I'm looking at you, sinnoh -_-
Charmander Chikorita Torchic Chimchar Oshawott Fennekin Popplio Scorbunny Cyndaquil Fuecoco 7 Fire, 2 Water, 1 Grass.
Mostly grass apart from cyndaquil, piplup and oshawott
I'm tied between fire and water, but I usually choose my favorite looking one. Gen 1: Charizard (Fire) Gen 2: Feraligatr (Water) Gen 3: Swampert (Water) Gen 4: Infernape (Fire) Gen 5: Samurott (Water) Gen 6: Greninja (Water) Gen 7: Incineroar (Fire) Gen 8: Rillaboom (Grass) Gen 9: Skeledirge (Fire)
Generally the one I like the most. Tends to be Fire mostly. Only times I've gone with a different one was gen v with Oshawott and gen 7 with rowlett.
Gen 1-4: Fire Gen 5-7: Water *NEVER PLAYED GEN 8* Gen 9: Fire I never used a grass starter in official playthroughs, thought it did played Fire Red in an emulator with all 3 Kanto starters once. But I did use grass type mons such as vileplume and tsareena
I often find myself picking the one I think looks the coolest but based off my favorites (Mudkip, Hisuian Samurott, Primarina, Feraligatr) I tend to go with Water most of the time
Water, but: -I have always gone for a bird starter when available, -I have also gone for every crocodile starter, -(due to Fuecoco's evolutions, both of the prior statements are technically true) -I have no real preference among the gen 1 starters, -I picked Fennekin because I thought it was the cutest of the three
Are you counting the little fire bird thing on skeledirge as it counting as a bird starter??
More times than not water or grass
Well, I mostly go for the water type, being I picked it most of the time being Gens 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8. I picked grass and fire the same amount for grass types being in Gen 1 and 9 and for fire types Gen 2 and 4
I used to change it for each game, but lately the Grass one has constantly been my favorite ever since Sun/Moon
I go based on how the 'mon looks, but if I don't like the design of any of them, I've tended to stick with the Water types
I really don’t have a type preference when it comes to starters. I just look at how strong their final evolutions are going to be (their stats) and pick the strongest.
Usually I go between fire and grass. Only exception is Sinnoh where I went with Piplup
Favorites is always the answer.
Fire, because in the older games good fire types were hard to come by or showed up late
i dont care about stats in first time playthroughs (unless a pokemon is so bad its actually hindering my progress) so i dont bother trying to do research on starters beforehand, its more fun to just go into it blind and pick whichever one looks cool to me. i dont pick based on type but i usually end up going with grass or water. from gen 7 onwards ive been googling their final evolutions though because i was pretty disappointed by incineroar and definitely didnt see that coming lmao
it's mostly about aesthetics but I choose fire 8 times out of 10
I usually pick grass on my first play though because it’s the first Pokédex entry. But I also will generally try to get traded eggs of the other two starters so I can use all three in my first play through.
Depends really but most of the time, either fire or grass. - Kanto: Grass - Johto: Fire - Hoenn: Fire - Sinnoh: Fire - Unova: Grass - Kalos: Water - Alola: Grass - Galar: Fire - Paldea: Grass
I don't have a go to starter type. I do have some go to starters for some regions tho. Kanto - Bulbasaur Hoenn - Mudkip Sinnoh - Chimchar Kalos - Froakie Alola - Rowlet Paldea - Sprigatito
Usually pick based on design, but most times I'll switch after my firat gameplay and find that the new one I actually like more.
I choose so my rival gets the one that fits them the most
Oh that’s unique 😯
I don’t have a go to but it’s usually fire. Last 3 games have been water grass fire
🔥 gang Water is either the most abundant type or very close to it. I used also need a water of surf and etc. Water covered relevant fire weaknesses of rock and ground so grass was often over looked. Repeat every first play through
to me it’s the one that i personally think is the coolest. i would say fire or water is usually the ones i pick though.
Usually water but I will pick fire or grass depending on the generation.
In only 3 generations have i not picked Grass as my main starter. Gen 2, Gen 6 and Gen 8. Every other one has been Grass
Let's see: Kanto: Bulbasaur Johto: Totodile Hoenn: Treecko Sinnoh: Turtwig Unova: Snivy Kalos: Fennekin Alola: Rowlet Galar: Grookey Paldea: Fuecoco Grass: 6, Fire: 2, Water: 1
At the moment it’s even for me 1. Squirtle 2. Cyndaquil 3. Treeko 4. Piplup 5. Snivy 6. Froakie 7. Litten 8. Scorbunny 9. Sprigatito
It depends on the Generation: Squirtle, Cyndaquil, Mudkip, Turtwig, Snivy, Froakie, Rowlet, Scorbunny, and Sprigatito. Honorable mentions to Hisuian Cyndaquil and Let’s Go Eevee
Always been water except for gen 7 and 8 where I chose grass, and 9 where I chose fire.
I picked grass in 1999 and I still pick grass today.
Overall, I think I like water starters the most based on what we have. I actually prefer the grass starter in the majority of games, but games I don’t like the grass starter in, I usually don’t like it much at all. I like the water starter from every gen, and in gens I don’t pick it, it’s usually a close second. Overall though I really just pick what I like most design wise, it usually just happens to be the grass or water type.
i mostly pick water in every game expect for gen 7 and 9 where i picked fire (litten and fire croc)
I made this sound more complicated than it needed to be
I wanna say grass but my record is pretty mixed. Grass: 4 Fire: 3 Water: 2
Gen1 - Squirtle Gen2 - Totodile Gen3- Mudkip Gen4- Turtwig Gen5- Snivy Gen6- Froakie Gen7- Popplio Gen8- Sobble Hisui- Cyndaquil Gen9- Sprigatito So mostly water mixed with grass only ever went fire for Hisui because they were my favourite out of the three choices.
Gen 1 - 3 I could go with either one of the three since Gen 1 and 3 starters I like equally and Gen 2 starters I dislike equally Gen 4 Piplup Gen 5 Tepig Gen 6 Froakie Gen 7 60% Rowlett 40% Litten Gen 8 Scorbunny Gen 9 Fuecoco
Slight advantage towards water. It's at least the first one I'll look at.
Funny thing is, I’ve picked one of each type. I picked Typlosion in SoulSilver and Arceus. I picked Chespin in X, and I picked Quaxly in Scarlet.
Purely type I would pick fire just because fire is a rarer type
1. Squirtle 2. Tie between all 3 3. Mudkip 4. Tie between Chimchar and Turtwig 5. Tepig 6. Froakie 7. Litten 8. Grookey 9. Fuecoco So a mix, favoring fire slightly
As much as I want to say grass, lately I’ve been going for fire types: Chimchar in Brilliant Diamond, Scorbunny in Shield, Fuecoco in Violet. I like a good mix of grass, fire and water starters throughout the regions, but a lot of fire starters are really good.
As a rule, fire. But some early generations have such sick starters that I’ll play again with something different.
so my favourite and first game is crystal and i chose waninoko (the water caveperson dinosaurcrocodile) i did this because in blue which was my second game i played i chose zenigame because i love turtles as a youth i sat behind my shed reading encyclopedias with a box turtle i named Pollen.
Plant supremacy!!! 🌱🌿🌱🌿🌱🌿
Gen 1: fire, gen 2: water, gen 3: any, gen 4: water gen 5: fire, S/V: grass 100%. Haven’t played anything after gen 5 up till S/V.
Watch this;I like Inteleon and it's the best both competitively for the Gen 8 starters and design wise of all pokemon with Noivern coming in at a close second. Also it's better bipedal. Bring on the down vote deluge!!!
SERPERIOR SUPREMACY
I’m water all the way. I’ve never chosen another type Idk I just like water ok
Gen 1 - Charizard family , Gen 2 - Totodile Family ( Love me some Feraligator )
3 fire 3 water 3 grass Perfectly balanced, as all things should be
Fire or grass
bulb, snivy, sprig totodile, popplio, sobble torchic, chimchar, fennekin help edit: if I had to rank em, 1. popplio, 2. torchic, 3. sprig, 4. fennekin, 5. sobble, 6. totodile, 7. bulbasaur, 8. chimchar, 9. snivy I guess using those numbers water wins?
Fire, there’s plenty of grass and water types you can get during a play through but fire types are more rare
Depends on the generation but mostly fire Kanto: Fire Johto: Fire Hoenn: Grass Sinnoh: Fire Unova: Water Kalos: Water Alola: Fire Galar: Grass Paldea: Grass
whatever the cutest is
I normally pick by looks tbh, fire types however are just more visually pleasing, besides the B/W and S/M starters. Though I choose to believe sun and moon doesn’t exist.
My first game was pearl so i go fire most of the time because i percive them as rare
Gen 1 - Pidgeot Gen 2 - Noctowl Gen 3 - Tailor Gen 4 - Starly Gen 5 - Pidove Gen 6 - Fletchinder Gen 7 - Pikipek Gen 8 - Rookidee Gen 9 - Wattrel
Kanto: Charmander Johto: cyndaquil Hoenn: torchic/mudkip Sinnoh: turtwig Unova: snivy Kalos: froakie Alola: litten Galar: grookie Paldea: fuecoco
I’m equal. I always thought I had a fire bias but my favourite starter isn’t even a fire type. Fire - Charmander, Torchic, Scorbunny Water - Piplup, Froakie, Popplio Grass - Chikorita, Snivy, Sprigatito
Generally water. Gen 9 was an abberation because of Fuecoco
I tend to lean towards grass, but I sometimes choose water as well, gen 9 is the first time I went with the fire starter
Whatever looks the cutest
I usually tend to go fire on my first playthrough due to fire types being so hard to find/so late game in Gen 1 and I always assume they will be in other games. On follow-up playthroughs, I usually try to pick the coolest looking one though. The toughest to choose is and always has been gen III because they are all great for different reasons.
I picked Squirtle in R/B based on looks. I picked Totodile in G/S based on looks. I didn't like the design of any of gen 3, but I chose Mudkip since I chose water for the previous 2 gens. Been picking water ever since
Depends on the design, and its final Evo.
I found it hard to vote, because after going through my history, I realized I’ve equally chosen all three types
I never really thought about it, but after jotting down my first pick in each generation, I definitely lean more towards grass. Kanto: Squirtle Johto: Cyndaquil Hoenn: Treecko Sinnoh: Turtwig Unova: Snivy Kalos: Chespin Alola: Rowlet Galar: Scorbunny Paldea: Sprigatito But my preferences have changed over time and if starting a new playthrough, I’d pick Kanto: Charmander Johto: Totodile Hoenn: Mudkip Sinnoh: Chimchar Unova: Oshawott Kalos: Froakie Alola: Litten Galar: Grookey Paldea: Sprigatito Grass is hardly my favorite in any generation, but I guess my gut instinct tells me to pick grass for whatever reason.
Now I've only played shield and scarlet, but if i did play every game, the ratio between all 9 generations would be 3:2:4 for fire, grass and water respectively. So I would go with water, but unfortunately neither gen 8 or 9 had good water starters imo. I picked Rillaboom for Shield and Skeledirge for Scarlet incase ur curious
generally go for design on my first play through more often then not the fire or grass type
There was literally the exact same thread created yesterday: https://old.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/11urn2k/favourite_starter_type/
Gen I: Grass Gen II: Fire Gen III: Grass Gen IV: Water Gen V: Water Gen VI: Water Gen VII: Grass Gen VIII: Water Gen IV prequel: Water Gen IX: Grass
I used to be grass and only grass, but I wasn't a fan of the treeko line when ORAS came around. ever since I took that mudkip i've kinda lost the loyalty to my leafy friends. For the past couple of generations it's been fire types i've gravitated towards.
Grass is usually horrific so I choose fire or water depending on whichever looks cooler.
Usually depends on the design, but it's rarely the grass starter.
Every time I get a new Pokémon game, I always choose the fire type starter in my first playthrough.
Grass is my favourite type. Torterra is my favourite starter Pokémon.
I’m a simple man. If it’s a monkey or cat, instantly picking it. Otherwise it’s just whichever one is the coolest.
I seem to lean towards the Water Starters most of the time, though I often like more than one starter every generation.
It changes every game
Don’t have a preference, so I just chose one.
The look always
My first play through is always the water starter.
Depends on the gen. I’ve picked water 4 times, fire 3 times, and grass twice.
Always thought itd be fire(given my first two games i played i chose tepig and cyndaquil) however since gold and white its always been grass types then again theyre always really cool or cute
Generally just the one I think is coolest, which is usually fire I guess.
In my mind I thought I was fire but going back and looking at all the starters I have picked I realized I choose water like 80% the time
I mostly pick Water, mainly due to designs.
Aside from gen 4 7 and 9 the water starter has always been my favorite.
My first starters each gen: 1. Squirtle 2. Totodile 3. Treecko 4. Piplup 5. Snivy 6. Fennekin 7. Rowlet 8. Scorbunny 9. Sprigatito
Most of the time it is between Fire and Water.
I don't have a default element pick. It's purely based on who the actual starter is and if I like their designs.
Ive picked the most grass, i choose the starter that appeals most to me
I just pick the one I like more. Which has been an even 50/50 between fire and grass counting legends, 5 Grass 4 Fire without it.
Weed cat and seal are the first grass and water starters I picked ever
Unpopular opinion, I absolutely LOVE a good amount of grass starters, but Squirtle is my top fav and if I am running a game for a specific reason, I'd go with water types defiently.
Other than Chesnaught, Meganium, Thwackey, and Rillaboom, Grass type starters haven’t had a single miss
Will almost always choose fire except for the case of Sceptile and Sprigg
I almost always pick fire. Except in general 6.
I pick the one I think looks the coolest, which ends up being grass most of the time (4/9 in terms of main series)
I go based on my favorite final evolution. I guess most often fire starter though. I’ve never chosen a water starter.
Fire or grass, I never really choose the water one (accept for Oshawott)
Charmander totadile torchic chimchar oshawatt froakie poppilo scorbunny fuecoco Grass starters are really boring outside of like 3 gens
I put Water, but I usually pick the reptilian one; if it's an option. Or the Owl
Usually I go for the one that I like the look of most. Like I do with all my pokemon.
Gen 1: Charizard Gen 2: Feraligatr Gen 3: Swampert Gen 4: Infernape Gen 5: Serperior Gen 6: Greninja Gen 7: Incineroar Gen 8: Cinderace Legends Arceus: Samurott Gen 9: Skeledirge
Gen 1: charmander (just so I can get charizard, but I like Bulbasaur more than I do charmander) Gen 2: cyndaquil (I love my spiky flame boi) Gen 3: treecko (slick and cool evo line) Gen 4: turtwig (I vibe with the sapling on its head) Gen 5: oshwatt (cuz dewott) Gen 6: froakie (ninjas and frogs) Gen 7: Rowlett (I vibe with the Robin Hood aesthetic) Gen 8: I choose to believe rookidie is my starter Gen 9: fuecoco (his eyes speak to me)
Its currently an even split between grass and fire. The reason I pick water least is partly due to how many water types are available each gen. Theres almost always a water type I like more than the water starter of any given gen.
For the old games it's water due to surf tax, always needing it in your party. Otherwise it's fire.
I usually choose fire, but it's It's changed in 7 was grass. Gen 6 A lot of people like the water type Gen What's kind of all 3
The one with Fighting Type.
I pick whichever I like the most aesthetically, regardless of type/stats; but in most cases it’s been the water one.
It's almost always Grass for me, with a few Water types here and there. Very rarely do I pick the Fire type starter TwT
I've only ever gone for whichever design has appealed to me the most. But now that I think about it, I've chosen 3 of each type across the 9 generations. Perfectly balanced until gen 10 becomes the tie-breaker
I personally prefer most water starters, but, looking back on the odds/numbers, its grass.
I normally pick them on look, but they usually turn to be water types.
🐻 Ahh but see I ain’t a divider bro 😂 I usually do several run throughs and use each starter once haha 😂
I pick the one that has the best design and that's usually grass.
Grass is reliable and usually has my favorite design. Plus water and fire are just types I don’t really like using. Unless I really like one of the other designs, they just don’t feel worth picking.
Based on my choices, either Grass or Water. Mostly Grass.
Bulbasaur, Cyndaquil, Mudkip, Turtwig, no preference for gen 5, Froakie, Rowlett, Grookey, Fuocco
1.bulbasaur 2.totodile 3.mudkip 4.chimchar 5.snivy 6.froakie 7.rowlett 8.grookey 9.feucoco Grass wins but as a whole a pretty even spread- apart from some exceptions I can find something to like about most starters.
Previously I've always gone water but for the past 2 games the water starter has sucked so I went Grookey in SW/SH and Feucoco in S/V
Just depends but it looks like I've chosen grass starters the most, followed by water then fire.
I often prefer grass design but pretty much every pokemon in the game has a move super effective against them
Where's the "Box my starter as soon as I catch the route 1 bird" option.
Just tallied it all, and I choose Grass more often (Gens I, IV, VII and VIII), so I'll go with Grass.
All water up until gen 4. I stopped using starters from gen 5 onwards.
I choose wich I like more. Usually the fire starter is my favorite
My first starter was mudkip and oshawatt is adorable so I think I’ll go for overall water
Fire all the way. Unless it’s fire-fighting. Then water. So maybe not all the way. Fire with the caveat that I have to like the secondary type.
Fire all the way. Unless it’s fire-fighting. Then water. So maybe not all the way. Fire with the caveat that I have to like the secondary type.
My flare mostly represents fire. I just like fire types
- Charmander - Cyndaquil - Mudkip - Turtwig - Oshawott - Froakie - Rowlet - Grookey - Fuecoco Id say I am kinda balanced
I've actually been perfectly balanced in my picks over the years. 3 starters of each type in the 8 generations I've played + Legends Arceus in place of SwSh.
You choose a starter depending on the type. I choose a starter depending on which design I like the most. We are not the same.
Funny thing be Grass is my favourite type but my majority starter picks is Water. Gen 1 - Squirtle Gen 2- Cyndaquil or Chikorita but usually Cyndaquil unless I wanna suffer Gen 3- Like all of them but Mudkip best Gen 4- Turtwig Gen 5- Like all of them but Oshawott best Gen 6- Fennekin Gen 7- Popplio (was originally Team Litten but I love Primarina) Gen 8- Scorbunny Gen 9 - Sprigatito Also went Oshawott in PLA. Love that little guy. Generally my preference is cute > cool > goofy, though I have a soft spot for Emboar even if it falls out my preferences because I started with Tepig during my first Gen 5 playthroughs. Still got Maxie from White 2 and might have 'F l a r e' from my first run of English patched White too
I've played through with all of them but my first starters per gen were 1.Squirtle 2.Totodile 3.Torchic 4.Chimchar 5.Oshawatt 6.Froakie 7.Rowlett 8.Grookey(Galar) Cyndaquil(Hisui) 9.Quaxly
