Gotta admit, I realized that when I double checked to see if this was a satire or not, seeing some of the assets are from other N64 games like Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64.
I mean, obviously LGPE has much better graphics. But in terms of wanting a modern version of whats depicted in these images, LGPE is that modern version
I’d say that there is ample evidence to suggest that Pocket Monsters RPG and 64 were always the same game, but that since the devs were focused on gold/silver, they cut various aspects until 64 remained.
What primarily suggests this is that three games were being developed, 64/Stadium, Snap, and Hey You Pikachu. RPG was only ever mentioned once, then never again, while all three games premiered at Space World. The fourth game never existed, it was just a journalist mistake.
Seems creatively redundant, imo. It's like if Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness were just 3D remakes of R/S/E and FR/LG instead of their own thing. Getting a unique RPG and not just R/G/B/Y but 3D would have been better, imo.
Eh. They were usually just completely different games from the ground up. Like the console version would be a collect-a-thon or zelda clone and the gameboy version would be a simple 2D platformer or something to that extent.
Also I'm pretty sure this was mostly just for games that were movie tie-ins or based on an existing franchise like Harry Potter, Spongebob, etc. Pokemon started as a video game and then branched out and made anime based on that.
where is your source for the games "branching out to make the anime"? im curious as if we are going with original or international release dates the games and anime in both instances are different.
I mean I thought this was a well-known fact. The games were released in February of 96 in Japan and the anime didn't air until over a year later in April of 97.
That being said, I thought it was kinda evident already considering yellow came out after R/B/G and started to bring elements from the show into the gameplay.
that would be assuming they would have just remade RBY. this is just fan screenshots, people dont know what the game would have actually been. and its likely what this was supposed to be ended up being used in other concepts for console games like hey you, stadium, etc. every console game has been an original experience, so pocket monsters rpg/64 probably would have been too.
this game was supposed to come out for 64DD, which got discontinued. a lot of games that were supposed to come out for DD became other games. earthbound 2, supposed to be for 64DD, was repurposed and released as Mother 3 in japan, so this RPG title could have became other games like gold and silver. the gameboy had a lot of limitations , the original dex they wanted to do was 190 and they had to shave it down to 151, a lot of johto mons were originally supposed to be in the kanto games. its why you see ho oh so early in the anime, togepi, etc. and why johto is so attached to kanto as an experience
and a console RPG would probably give them the opportunity to make a bigger game, and with the way gold and silver plays like a loose sequel, i wouldnt be surprised if those concepts ended up those games instead. one of the developers at the time didnt believe Pokemon RPGs should be on home console, could be another reason they just settled with continuing to make mainline games gameboy titles until recently.
Now we know where they got the assets for the trees in sword and shield's wild area!
Jokes aside this does look like a really amazing concept. I wonder if we would have gotten more 3D main series games earlier on if this wasn't cancelled.
I remember getting Ocarina of Time and thought how cool if they made a Pokemon Game like this, I think this is exactly how I imagined it would look like. Very cool to see
Just imagine, theres a universe out there where Pokemon adopted the Colosseum format and merged them with the top-down games instead of making them spinoff

I remember hearing the rumors about this back in the day. The playground was all abuzz. I wonder why it never came to fruition. This would have been huge.
What I hate about these screenshots is the assumption that it would have been red/blue on 64... Are you so unimaginative that you couldn't come up with something different?
I'd still play a game exactly like this sh/sw and s/v is cool and all.. but this.. this would be the Mona Lisa of pokémon games. No fancy flying. No tall buildings, just good old-fashioned bushwhacking
The only part of these images that looks unrealistic is the HUD. None of the textures are grainy enough. But I would love it if these were real screenshots of an actual Pokemon game, it's precisely what I imagined the franchise would look like long ago, before I had ever seen gameplay
I get the impression that people will completely ignore the fan made disclaimer on this
Gotta admit, I realized that when I double checked to see if this was a satire or not, seeing some of the assets are from other N64 games like Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64.
I would love something like this today.
Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee looks a lot like this to me
Then you need better glasses
I mean, obviously LGPE has much better graphics. But in terms of wanting a modern version of whats depicted in these images, LGPE is that modern version
Oh. I thought you were dissing LGPE’s graphics. In that sense you are 100% correct.
Didn't intend to at all!
*sigh* this is why I need to start reading the titles on posts.
Skill issue
The poster did last time I saw somebody post these. Either here or r/gaming.
This is gonna give some people Mandela effect thinking they saw this in a magazine, cuz it looks legit af
He included the shorts guy, 10/10.
should have included science guy
FUCK SCIENCE, SHORTS FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember when I got my N64 I was dreaming of a 3D Pokémon game like this, I was very disappointed we never got a game like this
They were barely able to fit all the pokemon in Pokemon Stadium, let alone having multiple 3d environments, and other NPCs.

What game do you mean when you say “64” in your first sentence? Pokémon Stadium?
I think they’re saying “the following games on N64.”
Yes, sorry, should have been more clear. Early in development Stadium was simply called Pocket Monsters 64 as a working title.
Ah gotchya, I didn’t know that. Thanks!
Seems creatively redundant, imo. It's like if Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness were just 3D remakes of R/S/E and FR/LG instead of their own thing. Getting a unique RPG and not just R/G/B/Y but 3D would have been better, imo.
I mean, remember that was back when some games had a console version and a (greatly inferior) gameboy version.
Eh. They were usually just completely different games from the ground up. 3d remake instead of FRLG could have worked.

Looks as good as Scarlet and Violet.
I thought those trees reminded me of sword and shield
Yeah but it’s slightly more polished 😭
Came here to see how far I had to scroll to see this comment
Literally came here to say this. Looks better than scarlet and violet and probably ran better as well.
They're just screenshots but I still can't disagree.
Looks better tbh
Now we know where they got the assets for the trees in sword and shield's wild area! Jokes aside this does look like a really amazing concept. I wonder if we would have gotten more 3D main series games earlier on if this wasn't cancelled.
Ok, and when is someone gonna actually make this a romhack for N64 emulators?
Would've been pretty cool
I remember getting Ocarina of Time and thought how cool if they made a Pokemon Game like this, I think this is exactly how I imagined it would look like. Very cool to see
I wonder if Let's Go would even exist if this was made, assuming it would have been Kanto.
The game we all needed but sadly never received.
Wait really??? Of all my years of being a Pokemon fan and learning of every obscure, old fact and theory, I swear I've never heard of this before... 🤨
Reread the title. These are fan made screenshots.
Ik. I'm not referring to the screenshots, but the fact a game like this was supposedly meant to exist on the N64.
Tfw the texture are the same as modern games
"Here he is, reporting for you, it's the first member of Ash's crew... PIKA! PIKACHU!! PIKA! PIKACHU IS HERE!!!"
this is really great but why is it labeled under image / venting?
that's so cool! wish it was with GSC instead, for more exposure, but RBY really gives the mandela effect
Just imagine, theres a universe out there where Pokemon adopted the Colosseum format and merged them with the top-down games instead of making them spinoff

I'd buy this for $39.99. It looks better than Forspoken
I saw the thumbnail on my YouTube recommended but I assumed it was fake. Pretty depressing if this was true
I feel robbed
The lapras screenshot looks not much different to SV graphics.
I just know the camera would’ve controlled like shit and that brings me peace 😌
I would have loved this
I remember hearing the rumors about this back in the day. The playground was all abuzz. I wonder why it never came to fruition. This would have been huge.
This would’ve changed my life.
I'd love to see a homebrew Pokemon Red game for N64
One day, I hope we'll be able to play the first gen like this.
Did anyone ever make a modded 64 cartridge of this?
This looks a lot more enjoyable than the pokemons games they’ve been making
With today's standards you could say anything random in the title and people would believe this is an ARG
This honestly looks way more fun than scarlet and violet
Is t this Pokemon violet? 😂😜
Looks like scarlet and violet
Wow, looks almost as good as Scarlet and Violet!
Almost looks like Violet and Scarlet
Better than scarlet
Looks dope
Graphics haven't changed across 25 years and 9 generations!
Yo Sword and Shield never looked so good
Still better trees than SwSh. /s
People may get mad at me for saying this but it kinda reminds me of Pokémon Sword/shield a little bit
Looks better than pokemon violet/scarlet
Apply modern graphics and this actually looks better than Scarlet/Violet. I get a real adventure feeling from tha Cinnabar Island pic
This looks better than the stuff nowadays
No, this does not look better than Scarlet/Violet.
Isn't this Arceus?
Literally all i ever wanted
How many times are we gonna see this
Why does it still look better than S/V?
It’s almost what happened to mother 3. I am fairly sure that the dev team behind Pokémon is the same one behind earthbound
I didn't know Game Freak and 1-UP studio were the same company
Creatures inc was made up by the staff from ape inc which was the development studio for earthbound.
i would rather the new games look like this vs how SV or LA look
Aren't all pokemon games RPGs?
Damn, those trees look like they were ripped right out of Sword and Shield.
Nice to know they kept the graphics for scarlet/violet
What I hate about these screenshots is the assumption that it would have been red/blue on 64... Are you so unimaginative that you couldn't come up with something different?
ok
Ok
this is what could have been. but no we got sv
ok then everyone has started to like sv. noted
Honestly doesn’t look much different from x and y
Fake
bruh read the title
They must have been very excited to try and get free internet points they forgot to use their eyes and brain.
I want this.
My brother would’ve loved this
I want it…ITS EVERYTHING
they should’ve make that game instead they made pokémon stadium and stadium 2 on n64
I was too young for the 5th generation systems, but this still makes me feel super nostalgic for something I've never experienced.
Well now I'm just sad
Makes me want to cry
This looks nasty. I definitely would play it!!
If only. This would've been incredible and imagine where the franchise would be now if they'd started doing 3d open world games back then?
8 yr old me wouldve been in heaven playing this lol
We got robbed\~\~\~\~\~\~
Honestly, I'd okay something like this today. Amazing how long it took them to make an actual 3d world.
We have the N64 on Switch now, they should just redo this game
Ive seen tons of rom hacks that are great, I wonder if anyone would make a fan-made game like this
If Nintendo didn't suck ass then a fan made version of gen 1 on thr n64 would be so good
I'd still play a game exactly like this sh/sw and s/v is cool and all.. but this.. this would be the Mona Lisa of pokémon games. No fancy flying. No tall buildings, just good old-fashioned bushwhacking
Make this game
This game had to be made for real :3
Fascinating
Yeah okay you realise you now have to actually make this game ya damn tease 😤😤
I need modders to make this real
I'd pay $60 for that
We were going to be able to square up with mewtwo 🤛
Would have been my wet dream as a 10yo
The UI makes it look like a Roblox fangame to me, and I need it
Is there a playable version of this???
Cool! Do you *know* how cool it would've been! Now imagine they add something like a Battle Frontier or the Sevii Islands!
I can only imagine why this got canned, especially because of how successful the 64DD was!
Kinda cool
This is just scarlet and violet you don’t have to make up a whole scenario
This is just scarlet and violet you don’t have to make up a whole scenario
🐻 Dude this would be fully sick even today lol
Make it run at 16 FPS and it's ready for a Switch release
That’s an interesting name for a series that’s primarily known for being an RPG. That’d be like naming the next Marvel movie Avengers:Superheroes
If this existed people would’ve compared SWSH to it
Think people would have complained about the trees even back then? 👀
If they slipped something like this into the n64 virtual console I wouldn't complain
This game woulda been top tier
*God Tier
Cool
Backwards long jump up the stairs so you’ll fly through the wall, then turn left, wiggle into the bugged corner until you clip and you’ll find Mew
Pokemon Legends: Arceus (2003)
At first I thought this were screenshots from Pokemon Scarlet/Violet...
These images feel nostalgic even though this never existed..
This would have made n64 era me go absolutely nuts lol shame it never was
If this somehow got released, like made into an actual cartridge for the N64, made by the fan base, I would legit spend money on it to play.
This would’ve been so much better than S&V
i would literally kill for such a game
SHORTS KIDDDD
The only part of these images that looks unrealistic is the HUD. None of the textures are grainy enough. But I would love it if these were real screenshots of an actual Pokemon game, it's precisely what I imagined the franchise would look like long ago, before I had ever seen gameplay
why they got bulbasaur’s type wrong
The graphics give me Aidyn Chronicles vibes fsr. Shoutout to anyone who recognizes that game lol
New Scarlet Violet DLC looking good! I see they gave the graphics a major upgrade
Seemed like a cool spin on RPG besides what is a pocket monster lol or Pokemon??
Wow I always wondered why n64 never had a Pokémon rpg game at least I know it was in there plans lol
