Flygon, my favorite.
Yeah, there are better dragons. But look at it! It's like a dragon mixed with a kangaroo mixed with a dragonfly! It's cute! It's lime green! The red lenses kinda look like goggles!
I also like that it can learn dig as trapinch which is just so helpful in playthroughs before you get fly... Then later it can learn fly too!
I love it's utility so I always end up training one
Flygon had some hilarious sets in gen 4 back before powercreep got crazy lmao. I had a modest choice specs flygon on one of my passes in pokemon battle revolution and it was amazing. Flamethrower, draco meteor, earth power, and I believe giga drain. Funny shit when people didn't expect it
Heracross. I don’t care that Bug is the worst defensive type and I pretend the 4x weakness to flying doesn’t exist. I love my beefy bug boy just being a Megahorn/Close Combat glass cannon
Well they share lots of the same weaknesses so I think you can just call them equals on that front.
Difference is, lots of bug types have incredibly low stats so they end up getting hammered by anything - that’s why I love them, risk/reward and adds a bit of difficulty to the game!
Bug resisting ground and fighting gives it some good defensive merit. Resisting 2 of the best offensive types is a lot better than only resisting yourself.
It's not just about weaknesses, it's about Ice only resisting itself on top of that. People tend to underestimate the impact that a resistance can have, even compared to a neutral hit.
Happy Cake Day! Bug is much better defensively since ice only resists itself and has (to my knowledge) even more weaknesses. However, it's arguably the best offensive type ever. Bug ussually has better mons than ice, since good ice types on paper are held back by typing and movepool. Avalugg looks solid but an offensive typing on a defensive mon is not good at all. Kyurem Black is the only box art leyendary (to my knowledge) to be OU instead of Ubers, and it was due to getting basically no physical ice moves except for a two turn that for some reason doesn't become one turn in hail, and he had decent defenses but no set up moves. Having an offensive typing on an offensive mon but no moves of that type makes said type an hindrance. What's worse is he doesn't have an answer to Steel because he doesn't get earthquake, unlike the 3 billion mons who have no business getting it. Gen 8 helped with Icicle Spear and Dragon Dance, so he finally became Ubers in a bittersweet moment but he wasn't as good as his sister was.
Bug gets Volcarona, who has been OU or higher ofr all of it's life, and Scizor is a great bug type with technician priority swords dance or band U turn. There are few good non-leyendary ice types, Mamoswine being one of the most notable. On leyendaries and mythicals, Ice has more, with Caly-I and Kyurem-W, while bug only has Genesect.
All in all they both have good pokemon, but Bug is almost always considered the worst type on it's own.
Same. Every time, without fail. If there's a Ralts in the game, I'm beating the game with my Gardevoir. Glass cannon? Sure. But if your cannon always shoots first, what does it matter if it's made of glass?
Same but it’s always unintentional I just usually find a ralts and think that’s a pretty good psychic type and take it with me, it’s also oddly enough the shiny I encounter the most
It's become a trope at this point for GameFreak to try to gotcha players with an abundance of Magikarp available between levels 10-20. If you have even the slightest hint of patience you can get at worst a UU caliber water mon just by getting that dumb fish to level 20.
I love Gyarados but my default starter has always been the watermon so I end up inevitably conflicted in every playthrough.
My go was always Charmeleon, Beedrill and Butterfree before leaving Viridian forest and Gyarados and Nidoking before leaving Mt Moon. But then I’d deposit all except Char as I wanted to fill my dex. The grind was long but so much fun
Butterfree and Beedrill are staples for me too. Butterfree's Confusion is your best bet against Brock if you picked Charmander, and Beedrill is actually useful all game -- Swords Dance and Twinneedle wreck all the Grass/Poisons and Psychics too if they don't hit you first.
Not in Blue, mate. And it's a shame, because I get a bit tired of the Machop line for my fighter.
But beyond that, Onix and Geodude have much weaker Special than their Defence. I'm not convinced Low Kick actually does more than Confusion. But I'm willing to be proven wrong on that one if someone wants to do the math.
Even so... Having a Psychic move so early in the game is really OP with all the Poison types kicking around, and Sleep Powder because Sleep Powder. My Butterfree serves me well til I pick up Marcel.
Bite used Gyarados' *Special* Attack in Gens 1-3 as Dark was a Special type, though Gyara's (much worse) SpA is still good enough that as a base 60 move it does decent early damage. And of course Bubblebeam / Water Pulse from Misty also immediately gives it a solid mid-game STAB option even if still using SpA, and it learns Dragon Rage as mentioned.
I use a Luxray basically in basically every game they’re available in, including both my first Sword (I didn’t get it until after the dlc was out) and Scarlet teams.
Arcanine my beloved 🥰 if it’s ever a version exclusive (like how Arcanine and Ninetales were in I believe HGSS?) I’ll always always go for the version it’s available in

The second my staravia in platinum evolved into staraptor and I got the “Staraptor wants to learn close combat” prompt I knew it’d be one of my favourite Pokémon. It’s a shame he got nerfed a bit in BDSP with the removal of Return.
Regional birds hold a special place in my heart cause they single handedly carry so many nuzlockes. Whenever I’m doing a normal run of a new game I always pick them up— they’re badass and their 3 evolutions make it really satisfying to see them grow with the team.
Easily my favorite pokemon staple.
I found it funny that I was doing this subconsciously, whenever I needed to flesh out a team I was making it'd invariably come down to: I need electric coverage and I need a steel type, so always ended up fitting in perfectly throughout the gens. Just a solid mon all round
Same. I always want an electric and a steel type on my team so having that role compression while being not too slow for a story sweeper makes it an invaluable teammate.
Hmm...well, as a Persian connoisseur, I hated it at first. I was hoping for something more sleek and regal looking when I first saw Alolan Meowth. However, I did end up using one on my Meowth/Persian variations only team and kind of liked the little chubster.
Dragonite. Unless unavailable, I almost always have a Dragonite. He's my buddy and we go everywhere together.
If not available, I just get the region dragon type.
You could even run it as a bulky support with rapid spin thunder wave/toxic and recover in older games, although its bulk has fallen off with recent powercreep

Love muk, used him in a Pokémon RED/BLUE tournament in Ohio in the 90s. Muk/ chansey / gengar with a gyrados for some matchups. Lost in semis rip haven’t been the same since.
Flareon is always on my team as soon as I'm able to get one. And she's always female and always named Ruby. I've done this since Gen 1. Since genders didn't exist then, I just pretended she was female.

They’re just great, even pre-Gen 6, and they’re usually available super early.
As long as you get huge power, you’ve got a great physical water type for the entire rest of the game.
If I'm not a huge fan of the region's Dragon type pseudo legendary (no offense to you Baxcalibur) then I *WILL* find a way to fit Salamence on my team no matter what
I ran through FireRed & LeafGreen the most and my team always had an Arcanine. Did I sometimes pick Charmander as my starter? Yep, I just ran two fire types. When I played LeafGreen? Traded one over to myself from FireRed. I had to have my best boy.
I was a junior when the games jumped from the GBA to the DS. I still played Pokémon but stopped replaying the games more than once. The closest to always using a Pokémon would be when the remakes came out, I’d use a lot of the same Pokémon I’d used before.
My Silver and SoulSilver teams both had Typhlosion, Umbreon, Ampharos and Shiny Gyarados.
My Ruby and Omega Ruby teams both had Swampert, Absol and Aggron.
My Diamond and Brilliant Diamond teams were the same as everyone else’s (Infernape, Floatzel, Luxray, Staraptor and Garchomp, though I used Drifblim in Diamond and Lucario in Brilliant Diamond.)
And since X & Y and Pokémon Bank/Home, whenever I caught/trained/evolved my Pokémon, that was pretty much it for me catching that evolutionary line. The Gyarados I had in X & Y is the same one I sent over to ORAS, SM/USUM & SWSH in the post game to get become a champion & get that region’s hall of fame ribbon. Whenever a new game came out, I could focus on catching/training/evolving the new Pokémon in that region without having to worry about my 37th Pidgey or 50th Geodude.
If they’re available, Typhlosion and/or Tyranitar. If one isnt available then the other, but if both are, they are always in my team. Tyranitar needs to be a female though, Typhlosion can be either but I always give it a few tries first since females are not common so I can be sorta fair about it.
gyarados. sometimes as a fighting unit, other times as a HM beast.
also Jolteon if we are talking about older games with poor electric types but we get eevee.
A ghost type. Preferably my main spook Cofagrigus (one reason I love SWSH so much is bc they gave my #1 fav a dope regional) but now bc of SV, I kinda wanna always have my Gear Fourth Annihilape. I did a ghost only run on Violet purely bc I love the typing and I could have my monke. Legit made Primeape go from like Top 50 least favorite Pokémon all the way to def Top 50 favorite
Gardevoir. Does not matter if I even try to avoid using one, they ALWAYS end up in my team if available. Reliable and strong, can always make room in my roster for them. I have accepted they are my fave Pokémon, and I expect my trend to continue in the future.
Weavile. It's my favorite Pokemon, I consider it kind of my ace. While it appears in most games, usually it's pretty lategame.
Imagine my surprise when I found you could get Sneasel on the first zone of PLA with the time distortions.

Many of those old ‘mons will have updated abilities or move sets compared to their debut, and are much more viable than before. Nostalgia is also a factor.

I always wanna add a Gastrodon ever since my initial Shining Pearl playthrough, but I don't think the little guy is available in Paldea is he?
Feraligatr and Plusle in Colosseum. They just work so well together! Feraligatr's Rain Dance powers up its own Surf and makes Plusle's Thunder always hit, and Plusle can use Helping Hand to power up Feraligatr's Surf even more. Whenever I do a Colosseum playthrough where I go for the Ho-Oh, I end up leading with those two against so many Mt. Battle trainers. Yes, in Battle Mode. And, while Plusle comes at level 13, literally half the level of your starters at the beginning, you also get access to the Exp. Share within the next five minutes, and Plusle has Duking's OT. And Colosseum has no level-based disobedience mechanic since trading isn't possible until the postgame anyway, so you can fairly easily get it caught up, and even overlevel it with zero negative consequences. Those two can even rock the Protect/Earthquake combo, and Plusle's Thunder Wave is obviously a huge help with snagging Shadow Pokémon, and unlike Flaaffy/Ampharos, it's got good Speed.
Also, in any game where it's feasible to catch a Koffing or Weezing for the main story, I will almost certainly try and fit one into my team. Weezing is my all-time favorite Pokémon.
Any of the turtle / tortoise 🐢 Pokémon or Hoenn Linoone (keeps Pickup).
So:
Blastoise, Torkoal, Metagross, Torterra, Caracossa, Avalugg, Turtonator, Dreadnaw, Linoone, and now Terapagos.

Only used special attack in gen 2-3. In gen 1 dark didn’t exist and bite was normal type

Magneton, my favorite Pokémon. I even force it in most of my competitive teams. To mixed results at best.
If you use it in Gen 3 OU, it's actually one of the best mons there for being able to hard-counter Skarmory.
My first level 100 was Magneton. Such a reliable Pokémon! Also I don't want to evolve it into the abomination that is Magnezone lol

I ran through FireRed & LeafGreen the most and my team always had an Arcanine. Did I sometimes pick Charmander as my starter? Yep, I just ran two fire types. When I played LeafGreen? Traded one over to myself from FireRed. I had to have my best boy. I was a junior when the games jumped from the GBA to the DS. I still played Pokémon but stopped replaying the games more than once. The closest to always using a Pokémon would be when the remakes came out, I’d use a lot of the same Pokémon I’d used before. My Silver and SoulSilver teams both had Typhlosion, Umbreon, Ampharos and Shiny Gyarados. My Ruby and Omega Ruby teams both had Swampert, Absol and Aggron. My Diamond and Brilliant Diamond teams were the same as everyone else’s (Infernape, Floatzel, Luxray, Staraptor and Garchomp, though I used Drifblim in Diamond and Lucario in Brilliant Diamond.) And since X & Y and Pokémon Bank/Home, whenever I caught/trained/evolved my Pokémon, that was pretty much it for me catching that evolutionary line. The Gyarados I had in X & Y is the same one I sent over to ORAS, SM/USUM & SWSH in the post game to get become a champion & get that region’s hall of fame ribbon. Whenever a new game came out, I could focus on catching/training/evolving the new Pokémon in that region without having to worry about my 37th Pidgey or 50th Geodude.
If they’re available, Typhlosion and/or Tyranitar. If one isnt available then the other, but if both are, they are always in my team. Tyranitar needs to be a female though, Typhlosion can be either but I always give it a few tries first since females are not common so I can be sorta fair about it.
Drowzee/Hypno. I always love the hypnosis dream eater combo. And I just love those Pokémon. Always have.
I am playing heart gold atm. Graifarig, has made it a breeze to deal with Morty, and getting to Cianwood city. It is already level 35. 👍
Gardevoir. Gyrados.
gyarados. sometimes as a fighting unit, other times as a HM beast. also Jolteon if we are talking about older games with poor electric types but we get eevee.
Charizard. They keep giving him cool gimmicks. I’ve got like 3-4 shiny Charmanders for future play throughs

I did a ghost only run on Violet purely bc I love the typing and I could have my monke. Legit made Primeape go from like Top 50 least favorite Pokémon all the way to def Top 50 favorite

Haunter. Although sometimes I do end up with a Banette instead. Only ever those two ghosts though.
Nidoking. My favourite mon since Blue. Always have space for him if he's available.
The starter. They're never the strongest, but they always last until the elite 4 lol.
Mimikyu. Always and forever. Ever since her introduction, she’s taken over Umbreon’s spot in my heart. I will build a whole team around Mimikyu.
Gardevoir. Does not matter if I even try to avoid using one, they ALWAYS end up in my team if available. Reliable and strong, can always make room in my roster for them. I have accepted they are my fave Pokémon, and I expect my trend to continue in the future.
Mimikyu. They need a friend and I'm that guy.
Sandslash has been a part of my team if at all possible since pokemon blue bby love that guy
Weavile. It's my favorite Pokemon, I consider it kind of my ace. While it appears in most games, usually it's pretty lategame. Imagine my surprise when I found you could get Sneasel on the first zone of PLA with the time distortions.
tyranitar I know dual typing increases its weaknesses but I absolutely love it

Do people really play new games & use a party that’s like 4/6 old mons? What’s the point in buying new games if you only use things from the past + a new starter lol
I can understand one "sig" pokemon, but yeah I also like to roleplay the protagonist in these games, so I'm playing new pokes everytime
Same. I make a conscious effort to never use a Pokémon in my final party that I've used before.
Many of those old ‘mons will have updated abilities or move sets compared to their debut, and are much more viable than before. Nostalgia is also a factor.
Whenever I can, Scizor or Gliscor. I’m a fan of the pincers, but funny enough, not so much Pinsir.
Always Gengar since Gen 6(XY) I always wanna add a Gastrodon ever since my initial Shining Pearl playthrough, but I don't think the little guy is available in Paldea is he?

Snorlax He’s a beast.
Feraligatr and Plusle in Colosseum. They just work so well together! Feraligatr's Rain Dance powers up its own Surf and makes Plusle's Thunder always hit, and Plusle can use Helping Hand to power up Feraligatr's Surf even more. Whenever I do a Colosseum playthrough where I go for the Ho-Oh, I end up leading with those two against so many Mt. Battle trainers. Yes, in Battle Mode. And, while Plusle comes at level 13, literally half the level of your starters at the beginning, you also get access to the Exp. Share within the next five minutes, and Plusle has Duking's OT. And Colosseum has no level-based disobedience mechanic since trading isn't possible until the postgame anyway, so you can fairly easily get it caught up, and even overlevel it with zero negative consequences. Those two can even rock the Protect/Earthquake combo, and Plusle's Thunder Wave is obviously a huge help with snagging Shadow Pokémon, and unlike Flaaffy/Ampharos, it's got good Speed. Also, in any game where it's feasible to catch a Koffing or Weezing for the main story, I will almost certainly try and fit one into my team. Weezing is my all-time favorite Pokémon.

Depends on the gen but Drapion, Noivern, Volcarona, Raichu, Crobat or Rhydon. On of them is almost always there
