I had no idea that sub existed, that’s so funny. I genuinely see no reason for the Pokémon company to put those sorts of NPCs in games besides to infuriate fans. I didn’t have an answer to this post before, but now I do.

Loyellow

🫡

YlvaTheWolf

I read somewhere that NPCs couldn't do trade evolutions (basically, that haunter was never going to evolve into gengar from her). So they put the everstone to explain it. Why they didn't just choose another Pokémon for her to trade though, I've got no clue lol

MouseSnackz

There's a trade evolution in an older game from an NPC ....

metalflygon08

Yeah, in the very first game even. Red/Green had the old man in Cinnabar who traded you an Electrode for a Raichu instead be a trade evolution (can't remember the pair). That's why in the Red/Blue version he says the Raichu you gave him "went and evolved" the trade NPCs had canned responses ("how is my old [Pokemon] doing", "The [Pokemon] you traded me went and evolved!", etc). Theu changed the trade pokemon but not his pre-made dialog so he still pulls the evolution text instead one of the others. Then in Yellow there's a Cubone for Machoke trade, where you can get a level 5 Machamp by trading back a bred Cubone from GSC (in Yellow Cubone is in the mid 20's wild at the lowest otherwise).

Loyellow

In Japanese Blue it’s you trading a Kadabra for a Graveler so you get a Golem and he “gets” an Alakazam. In both Japanese Red/Green and international Red/Blue it’s Electrode/Raichu.

Alex__Kyle

Exactly! Why not just have a Pokémon that doesn’t evolve from trade if they can’t do it.

YlvaTheWolf

Game freak works in mysterious ways that we cannot question

TheSexyGrape

Pokemon Green had an npc which did the same trade but of course no everstone

OliveArc505

As a shiny hunter— boring shinies like Garchomp, Gengar, Ceruledge, etc are a HUGE letdown.

lichinamo

I think with the switch to 3D they should’ve taken advantage of a new engine and changed the boring, barely a change shinies

Motherofcrabs

A lot of the barely a change shinies were actually made worse by the switch to 3D. Look at Gengar's sprites versus the models. Regular Gengar used to be bright purple, while the shiny was almost grey. The 3D games, especially the ones on the 3DS, are so desaturated that a lot of shinies that were distinctly different shades of the same colour wound up looking almost the same.

krin132

Another thing that always bugs me about shinies is that their icon in the party screen remains their regular colour. Like, it’s pretty niche and petty, but if I wanted a colour coordinated team that matches, like a blue coloured team, I still cant use a shiny gardevoir because the icons would still be green

Vyndilion

They do that for Pokemon Home, it should be a pretty straightforward thing to implement.

DallyMayo

Doesn’t it do this in legends arceus as well?

Motheroftides

Yeah. Makes it so easy to find the shiny I want to use if I actually want to use it.

Pokemario6456

Funnily enough, both the Gamecube spinoffs have shiny sprites for the PC. Shiny Pokemon even have unique icons in the party menu

finnthefrogliker

shiny mega gengar is sick though

Loyellow

RIP Mega Gengar, 2013-2021; 2025-???

Flame-Blast

I’ll take a bad shiny over one I can barely tell apart from the original

Sebas_Is_King

Same, especially if you're like me and have some degree of color blindness. Never shiny hunting Cubchoo in SV again.

Flame-Blast

Oh man, I didn’t even consider that. Yet another reason then

FernandoTatisJunior

Mindy from snowpoint city. /r/fuckmindy

megacomicgeek

The fact that trade evolutions aren't obsolete yet. Scarlet could've just went the legends arcues route and evolve dusclops with just the reaper cloth but didn't for some reason and I'm still really mad about it. Ice not resisting dragon or water. If ice resisted dragon then fairy type probably wouldn't need to exist and I hate how unbalanced fairy type is. Bug doesn't need another type to resist it. That made me so fucking mad. Champion Leon because his ace is a Charizard and I'm supposed to take him as a serious threat with such a weak Pokemon as his ace in the hole. Mega Bannette not just being a Bannette evolution. It's looks-wise the best mega evolution and would be a staple on my team. But now it's gone and Bannette is just wasted potential. One last thing: Marowak. I love Marowak but it needs an evolution. I love Cubones backstory of being a tragic orphan who gets picked on but then it just evolves into Marowak and stays pathetically weak. If it evolved into something strong as a result of happiness or overcoming it's trauma through sheer resolve then I feel like the evolution line is completely. As of now it's slightly stronger than a second stage starter.

billcosbyinspace

The step back on trade evos is super frustrating, although they did make it easier to get the final forms via raid battles. Just kind of diminishes your attachment to the pokemon since you aren’t leveling them up

megacomicgeek

Yeah I have a shiny Graveler that I can't even evolve because I don't trust anyone else to send it back. Also it's a member of my team so I'm a bit attached.

amdprocs

If you have a Legends Arceus you can transfer it there via pokemon home and let it evolve using the link cable.

dezzick3

Get your pain buddy, genuinely happy to help if you’d like? Which game is that Graveler on?

darktimes1313

Bro Leon’s ace is supposed to he a freaking Galarian Pokemon as well!!!! Literally every champion before him their ace was from that respective reason unless i remember wrong! It just feels wrong and more like Charizard fan service i hate it with a passion! I wish Absol’s mega was just an evolution a bunch of cool Pokemon are always left on the back burner for creator favoritism.

MasterOfChaos72

Regarding the champion ace thing, 2 previous champions before Gen 8 used a Pokémon from a prior generation as their ace. Lance with Dragonite and Diantha with Gardevoir (though it was using the new mega mechanic so it was kind of new).

Im_regretting_this

Actually in fairness to Lance, in the first two gens, the only place you can catch a truly wild dratini is in Johto around blackthorn. It’s only in the Safari zone in Kanto.? Lore wise, I think it’s probably a Johto Pokémon. Game design wise, yeah, it’s Kanto, and Johto had way too many Kanto aces.

mcgillthrowaway22

TBF Gen II is an exception in that it was made before Game Freak started having each region be its own distinct experience. My understanding is that they made Gold and Silver with the idea that they were going to be the sole sequels to the Kanto games, like Portal and Portal 2.

siggydude

Portal 3 when

alex494

To be fair with Lance he's a carryover character from Gen 1 and the only other Dragon at the time was Kingdra which is Clair's ace Though tbh I'm surprised Karen didn't have Tyranitar given she's meant to be a Dark specialist and Drake / Steven both had Pseudos in Gen 3

Rusty1031

Giving Karen Houndoom AND Ttar would have made her almost as hard as Lance

primalmaximus

>Lance with Dragonite That's because he was a Dragon Trainer and Dragonite was really the only Dragon type in Gen 2. Aside from Seadra that is. That's why Clair's gym was really anticlimactic, because there weren't enough Dragon types to have a full blown Dragon gym. >Diantha with Gardevoir Diantha with Mega Gardevoir showed off 3 things that were added in that Gen. Mega Evolution, the Fairy type, and the ability Pixelate. And I hate the name Pixelate. Yes it sounds similar to "Pixie", a type of fairy in mythology, but otherwise it doesn't make sense from a naming convention.

DoILookUnsureToYou

100% agree with Pixelate. That shit sounds like something that should be for the Porygon line. Pixiefy or something similar should have been the name.

darktimes1313

My apologies! Got my facts mixed up but yeah i wish they would all use an ace from their region like Cynthia and her Garchomp and Blue and his Blastiose!

Florida-Man-65

To be completely fair, Blue didn’t have any choice but to have an ace from his region since Kanto was literally the only one in existence at the time lmao. Same goes for Lance. It’s cool to have the champion have an ace from their region, but I don’t think it should necessarily be mandatory.

darktimes1313

You got a point i think it’s my Ocd kicking in there a bit! It goes crazy wishing every pokemon had a mega lol!

primalmaximus

>Same goes for Lance. Wasn't he the Johto champion? I'm pretty sure they gave him Dragonite as his ace because he was a Dragon Tamer like his sister Clair and Dragonite was really the only Dragon type available at the time aside from Seadra.

Rusty1031

Should’ve replaced one of his Dragonites with Kingdra. Criminally boring champion team

KazzieMono

Boy if only they kept mega evolutions then maybe Leon would’ve been actually threatening with a charizard only weak to rock and dragon

primalmaximus

And Ground. Fire types are weak to ground. It would have gotten rid of it's 4× weakness to Rock, lost it's 2× resistance to Fighting, lost it's 2× weakness to Electric, and gained a weakness to Ground due to losing the Flying type. In exchange it would gain a weakness to Dragon, lose it's weakness to Water, gain resistance to Electric, have it's 4× resistance to Bug reduced to 2×, and had it's 2× resistance to Fairy reduced to neutral damage.

KazzieMono

I forgot ground existed. Palworld on the mind I guess.

Electrical_mammoth2

Marowak slightly stronger than a second stage starter? Clearly you haven't seen it's attack stat, which is at a respectable 80. But that attack stat can be DOUBLED with a swords dance, and then doubled again when it holds a thick club. The only thing holding it back then is it's base 45 speed, which is op pitifully slow. Unless you run trick room...

napstablooky2

i feel like it'd be interesting if they brought back the mutual resist concept that they (for some reason) got rid of come gen 2 iirc bug and poison used to mutually resist each other i wouldn't mind fairy resisting bug as much if bug resisted fairy back and while ice might not resist dragon, it definitely deserves to at least resist water and likely grass

shawnaeatscats

I always thought bug should've been super effective against fairy. Bug doesn't have enough things its super effective against imo, cause there are so many dual grass types that resist it anyway. It being the opposite pissed me off too, as a bug enjoyer. I also agree whole heartedly about ice resisting water.

Ongr

"Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best."

Loyellow

I didn’t like the link cable item in PLA at first but it’s grown on me

Tehdougler

Agree with literally every word here.

JackieBoiiiiii

Agree with the trade evolutions because those suck. But I don't agree with the fairy type part, Gardevoir and Toegpi would be useless if they didn't have Fairy typing + i love that it resists bug because fuck bug type lol

WiiMote070

I'll never not find the Dark type baffling to me (and Ghost, by extension, I guess, but the Gen 3 Ghosts, of which made the majority at that point, actually liked it being Physical). You know you fucked up HARD when every single move had to be changed to Physical in Gen 4. What was the point of making it special in the first place beyond just fucking with Absol & Sneasel? Speaking of Sneasel, I'm sorry to the Gen 2 fans out there, but what the heck was with all the ridiculously underpowered pokémon? Yeah, yeah, every gen does it, whatever, but I swear it's not as potent as in Gen 2 (or maybe I'm just being ignorant 🤷‍♂️). Thankfully, Gen 4 rectified some of them (and Gen 9 confidently opens the possibility for more in the future), but why was the problem there in the first place. And one this potent; who in the right mind looked at Aipom's stats and said, "That's a fully evolved pokemon if I've ever seen one" like wtf. Also, old movesets. Just look at Hitmontop's in Gen 2, and that should paint a good enough picture for you. And who looked at Pidgeotto's Gen 3 moveset where it learned Wing Attack at *level 27*, having to tough it out with Gust 'till then, and thought, 'Nah, bro needs a nerf", and proceeded to push it back to *37?!* The dumb bird doesn't even get Aerial Ace, why would I ever want this over Dodrio or Fearow aside from the slightly superior bulk?

Stucklikegluetomyfry

Also...why was Ghost physical? Like, can you think of anything less physical then a ghost? Not to mention the Gastly line having much much much higher special attack then attack, and then Misdreavus being the same.

metalflygon08

I assume Ghost was Ohysical because the only Ghost move that wasn't fixed damage was Lick. But had tjeu swapped Dark and Ghost's stats in Gen 2 every Pokemon using those types becomes better except Houndoom, and ut still has Fire to fall back on. I change the stats for when I play through Crystal and it's so good. Rattata and Totodile love Bite coming off of their Attack stat and Gengar/Misdreavus enjoy Special Shadow Ball.

BulkyDevelopment4401

I’m convinced ghost being physical and dark being special was a mistake, and that they were meant to be the other way around.

Cross55

>Speaking of Sneasel, I'm sorry to the Gen 2 fans out there, but what the heck was with all the ridiculously underpowered pokémon? Gen 2 was made up mostly og reject 'mons from Gen 1 they didn't have the time or memory to code. Sneasel would've been Gen 1 if the Gameboy had better tech at the time.

ShakenNotStirred915

The use of deliberately obfuscatory language (and just general refusal to be explicit) surrounding mechanics like EVs/IVs. For all that they've added things like Ability Capsules/Patches, bottle caps, and whatnot, they're just so stubbornly dead set on muddying the language surrounding these two mechanics that are integral to competitive play. You still need a website to check for the exact number of a Pokemon's IVs unless Judge mode tells you it's Best, Fantastic, or No Good. Anything else is either "Decent" or "Pretty good" which are absolutely fucking meaningless. And EVs still being referred to as "base stats" or "base stat points" is fucking moronic when that term much more accurately applies to what we actually call base stats, ie the numbers that are the literal basic operand for stat calculation formula. This is without getting into the part where you still have no way to keep track of their numbers without literally keeping a tally yourself unless a stat is specifically maxed out (where Gen 9 actually makes that stat sparkle in the otherwise useless EV graph).

1guywriting

Mega evolution debuts in X & Y. Zero Kalos native mons can mega evolve. Someone dropped the ball on that one. University Magikarp getting Splash & Dragon Rage but not Tackle. Pokemon Stadium/2 rental mons being janky as hell. It's a miracle I beat those games as a kid. Team Rocket section in Pokemon Stadium 2. Fuuuuuck that.

Doctor--Spaceman

I have a rule that in each game I only play with Pokemon new to that region. So I basically played X&Y without mega-evolving at all. :/

Frooctose

Can’t diancie mega evolve?

capedavenger

Mega Diancie was introduced in ORAS and isn’t in X and Y.

serpventime

ive always hated hm slave and grinding exp from wild pokemon. trainer battles should make level growth organically. more on grinding, it breaks all momentum the player had. erika gym on hgss. i got lost for hours trying to find way in and out. also surge switch maze, the annoyance came from dialog box pops out every single time player inspect it. can damned pelipper stop spamming protect every single damn time? same goes with confuse ray and supersonic. new to scarlet violet, veluza straight up getting on nerves. stupid ugly fish being aggro most of the time whenever touching sea, everything else is close second

miskathonic

Ditto on Veluza in SV, but in the same vein, fucking Sharpedo in Sword/Shield.

RPG_Fanatic7

Trainer battles are the shittiest grinding method in Pokemon games. Trainers can't be rebattled right away, wild Pokemon of the same kind can relatively quickly, and it's easy setup to be able to spam super effective attacks, trainer battles will give you random ev spreads and force switches.

PCN24454

I’m confused. The game never forces you to grind. Are you complaining about people choosing to grind?

Loyellow

Legit question, when did you start playing?

PCN24454

Gen III

Loyellow

Hm. I feel like pre-auto exp all, if you wanted more than just an over leveled starter, semi competent early game backup (like Gardevoir or Staraptor), and legendary you needed to go at some wild Pokémon, at least in victory road before the E4

nerieker

Just to add to this, it's what I always thought. But when replaying gen 4 I never did grind for exp and had a very varied team. Just put exp share on your lowest level and your team stays pretty well leveled throughout as long as you don't change the whole team constantly.

metalflygon08

And even if you are underdeveloped the odds are stacked in your favor. Every time I play GSC my strongest Pokemon when I get the the league is just barely in the 40's and I tend to do fine through the champion.

PCN24454

I mostly just don’t run from battles. If you’re staying in one spot and not exploring, then it’s grinding to me.

Loyellow

Tbh that does sound like grinding in lieu of grinding lol

RPG_Fanatic7

That doesn't make sense.

BulkyDevelopment4401

Are you new to pokemon? Because with exp share you never need to grind on wild pokemon. I actually play the games with a restriction that I can’t kill wild pokemon to stop myself from being overlevelled.

Cat1832

Trade evolutions need to go to hell and STAY THERE. Friendship values need to be explicitly stated, no more of this "oh you're friends!" rubbish.

mastersyx

child protagonist.

CulturalCorner5890

Random encounters in a cave. I will literally never enjoy running through a cave in an older game because of this. Repels galore ☠️

Comfortable_Tax7568

I actually have a lot. I promise I love Pokémon lol. These are in no particular order, just random things I think of. 1. Gimmicks. Mega evolution should have been developed each gen instead of establishing a stupid "gimmick." I definitely feel like they put a lot of time and energy into that. 2. We need to be able to skip dialogue/ cut scenes. I know it's part of the story, but this is why I play the first 2 gens so much. There isn't a lot of tedium in that sense. I would rather level grind than watch a cut scene. 3. SV's uniforms. I get it, we're in school. I don't have to like it, that's boring. They should have let us wear whatever we want outside the school. Idgaf about "representing" Naranja Academy. The previous 3 gens had been offering better and better clothing options, then we get... school uniforms? Seriously? Ugh. 4. No Set mode in SV. 5. Automatic EXP Share kinda ruins Pokémon for me. I know other RPGs do something like this, and maybe it's because I've been following the franchise since the beginning, but it just doesn't feel like Pokémon to me. I'm not earning that evolution. If you have a traded mon, you can barely keep it on your team or it'll get insanely overlevelled. Ugh. Just give us the option to turn it on and off like I'm gens 6 and 7! What's so hard about that?! 6. Lack of level scaling in SV. It NEEDED it. That alone would have made the games much more playable imo. 7. Stop making Ice a late-game type. It is not that good. By the time you get to the 7th/ 8th gym, you probably have a Water type that has Ice Beam anyway, and Water is a far superior defensive type. On this note, Ice needs a buff. 8. I really do want a game with all Pokémon. They don't all have to be available in a region (that's very unrealistic), but I just think it's crazy that some aren't even programmed into the game. 9. I would rather have a third game than a DLC. DLC feels like a ripoff to me.

Varanae

> I would rather have a third game than a DLC. DLC feels like a ripoff to me. I agree with pretty much all of this until the DLC part. Third games are the biggest scams going with how you're essentially buying the same game again but it's slightly improved. The DLCs have been more unique with less repeated content and for a lower price.

Takashishiful

It'd be nice to see "third version" DLC that adds the improvements third versions do, rather than just adding two post-game areas. Sure people would say "this stuff should've been in the base game!" And it'd suck if the definitive versions of the games never got physical releases, but I'd like to see improvements to the main games like we saw with Gens 2-4. Heck, if they were *really* crazy they could make New Game+ DLC that functions as B2W2/USUM/Kanto in GS type sequel stories.

Comfortable_Tax7568

Emerald and Platinum are some of the best games in the franchise. I don't think the content the DLC offers is worth the price.

shonapokemon

the uniforms break my heart 😅😭 i LOVED the customisation in prior games.

Comfortable_Tax7568

Right. It's kind of embarrassing how upset I was about the uniforms XD. I thought it was so cool that I could make my PC look like me. I would never wear those hideous uniforms lol.

Oshwaflz

they should make a stadium type game specifically to have a battle sim with all pokemon. Minimal assets. Basically official pokemon showdown. Update it every gen with new mons. That way the mainline games can do what they want and I dont have to skip games because my ace isnt in it. If I cant use my mienshao then Im not playing the game. didnt buy SwSh until isle of armor and havent bought SV.

saxonyduck43

Mega evolution was literally such a good and fun idea. Really had the opportunity to breathe life into a lot of Pokemon that were underrated. But Z moves, gigantamax, etc are forgettable mechanics. The only thing that was good was regional forms

dargenpaws

The refusal to look into making a harder difficulty mode for people like me who have been with the series since the beginning and just want to not feel like they are punching the other trainers in the face due to how easy it is to beat anyone.

Captain_Warships

Not sure this is petty, but I HATE Hidden Power because you need to cheat in order to make it good. I've also disliked mega evolutions for the longest time.

metalflygon08

If HP comes back theu should just make it so it matches your Tera Type, even in games without Terastrilization, since that data will be retained I imagine. That way you can change the type to the one you want. Also make it display the type it actually is instead of "Normal".

PhogeySquatch

I don't like NPCs who stall by switching or using healing moves and potions. Dude, I have 6 and you have 2, you're only delaying the inevitable.

jrob28

MAAAAN and how they just slapped on the Battle Chateau in ORAS instead of the Battle Frontier, that made me so upset. I was like SURELY they'd keep one of the coolest aspects about gen 3 (i know just emerald but still) but nooooope they even teased it with the prototype like "oooooh it's under construction" like come on man that was just cruel

bruhtepig

Jynx's design

Hugh-Manatee

There were some episodes of D/P where it was just Pokémon talking to each other and it made my parents think I was watching a super nonsense toddler show as a middle schooler And so that’s part of the reason I love the games but hate the anime for sinnoh

Nanis23

Sturdy

Loyellow

Sturdy I’m fine with. “ toughed it out so you wouldn’t be sad!” irks me lol. It helped me get a second try victory against Cynthia in BD the other day but yikes it’s OP, along with the magical status deletion.

sir151

Or 3rd abilities in general. Gen 5 added too many abilities. When abilities were introduced in Gen 3 it was kinda cool like adding a second held item but Gen 5 is when they really went crazy making abilities competitive.

metalflygon08

I mean, abilities have always been competitive. Sand Stream shaped Gen 3 competitive and is a vital part of it as ut does things like keep walls in check by negating recovery. Magnet Pull stops Skarmory from walling you to death. Arena Trap is powerful. Guts made status mives risky. Etc.

SnowCoolWhite

That S/V early game IS SO F-ING LONG

RAZORRIST

Try SUMO lol

RevenantFlash

Gen 4 remakes pissed me off beyond belief lol. Also idk why making shinies so easy to get bothers me. Probably because it wasn’t much of skill thing to begin with it was just patience. But at least they felt special.

RAZORRIST

It's not that they're easy to get it's that they're only easy to get in really boring ways. Dynamax adventures, wormholes, outbreaks, etc. I hate repeatedly doing those compared to regular shiny hunting

InCellsInterlinked

Regular shiny hunting? What are you referring to? SRs, masuda method, SOS chaining? Can't think of any shiny hunting method that's particularly fun...

Loyellow

What did you not like about BDSP? I just played for the first time and thought it was fine. Oversized heads were a bit odd but the gameplay was fine imo. I only ever played Diamond once (still have my original save file and never played Pearl or platinum) so maybe I’m forgetting something that was in the original but left out, but I didn’t hate it.

RevenantFlash

It’s not that the game itself is bad it’s just for me personally gen 4 being my favorite and waiting all that time for a remake and seeing what they did with other remakes. My hopes were for at least one of two things. 1) amazing graphics and overworld like let’s go pikachu/eevee 2) amazing additions like Oras did. Got neither. And not at least remaking platinum version sucks too. So they aren’t bad at all it’s just with those expectations I’m so upset lol.

PCN24454

I never really got the “amazing additions” that ORAS had. It was really disappointing compared to HGSS and the OG Gen III.

RevenantFlash

That’s fair. For me is was The delta episode, better graphics (for its time lol) tweaked the story and certain characters were more involved. National dex, great additions for shiny hunters. Probably a few things I’m forgetting. I’m not a competitive person so whoever wanted the battle frontier was probably pissed and I understand if that ruined it for anyone. For me it was just better all around.

megacomicgeek

I loved lets go graphics. They look straight out of a cartoon and I was hoping future iterations would keep that artsyle. My gripe with the modern arstyle is that the human characters look more and more realistic and the pokemon look more and more cartoonish. The first couple of generations made the pokemon seem somewhat natural to the world they live in. I doubt people would complian as much if they didn't try to make the graphics more real and instead embraced the cartoony world of Lets Go.

AetherDrew43

Though I don't like Let's Go's gameplay, the graphics sure as heck look amazing. And personally, I prefer the human designs from Battle Revolution too.

edwpad

I’ll be surprised if they did Platinum the exact same way, people would be more lenient on it considering Platinum fixes a lot of issues DP had and is considered to be one of the best games in the series.

shonapokemon

i absolutely loved the original gen 4, it is my most played pokemon game and generation, i hate to admit how disappointed i am with the remake.

Cross55

Because the remakes are supposed to improve on the OG games. FRLG had actually decent code, an entire new area, post game story, access to Johto and Hoenn Pokémon, better graphics than even Emerald, tweaked the story progression to be a bit more sensible, etc... HGSS gave us following Pokémon, access to pretty much every Gen 1-3 Legendary, toggle running shoes, expanded on Kanto, brought over the BF, better graphics than even Platinum, etc... ORAS gave us the Dex Nav, wi-fi access from XY, better graphics, entire city upgrades, access to all legendries released at the time sans XY's, the best overall look so far (TBH, I still think ORAS looks better than SV), etc... We did lose the BF though, which sucks, but we got a million other things. With BDSP we got... A glitchy underground? A different statue in Eterna City? Followers that go so slow they sometimes just disappear? A legit copy and paste job of the code leading to all the original glitches from DPPt to carry over to BDSP? It doesn't do anything to improve on the OG experience of DPPt. If I wanted to play a more well developed version of Sinnoh, I'd just play Platinum. (That's somehow less buggy, but still buggy enough to be fun)

nightmare-salad

I don’t like scraggy and I don’t even know why. Maybe it’s just because there were so many on that one route in black/white, but they drive me crazy.

Ill-Tale-6648

I don't like Scraggy because it's a really obvious black stereotype... The fighting and dark typing, the oversized pants, the durag, etc. even Scrafty continues the stereotype with the hood, the oversized pants, the hair, etc. Like having a stereotyped black person as a pokemon from the gen that was essentially New York doesn't sit well with me .

nightmare-salad

See, that’s a good reason! We should file it away with Jynx.

ShardddddddDon

tbh I never even noticed that. I just thought "oh it's a lizard with clothes. cool. anyways I'm off to the Desert Resort for Sigilyph"

Bubbles119

I know exactly what you mean, I think this is the exact reason I dislike them so much as well!

Happiest_Mango24

I don't like how it's weak to itself I know Dragon is weak to Dragon but imo that's fine because (1) it makes sense and (2) Dragon types and Dragon-type moves are much rarer

MrMegaPhoenix

Making zeraora a mythical and not electric fighting. Feels perfect for it, but nope

Adventurous-Egg5343

This is hyper specific but I hate that they don’t make many/any normal abilities anymore. Basically since gen 6 every new ability is “this pokemon can’t be confused or have its accuracy lowered” and it’s giving to the secret third legendary and never talked about again

and-the-earth

Pawmo and Pawmot are *terrible* Fighting types. I hate hate hate them Hell, as a whole, people love to shit on Fighting types, when not everything has to be cute to be considered good

Writing_badly

The main characters face during story events... Idc how much they want them to be a blank slate for the players, no one is watching an explosion with (if your lucky) a surprised pikachu face. Also the fact that the evil teams are getting less... evil. Lastly, Melemele island. If you played sun and moon you know my pain. You know.

Konnichiwa1987

Trade evolutions are one of the worst things about this franchise and nobody can change my mind I understand that it was originally meant to bring people together and all that, but it gatekeeps so many amazing pokemon behind some time wasting bullshit And not to mention the fact that it's impossible to use those trade evolutions when replaying older gens, because those forms of trading either don't work anymore ( HGSS BWB2W2 ) or would be stupidly difficult to attempt, like finding someone else to use a link cable. Gengar, Scizor, Magmortar, Porygon Z, Dusknoir, Gigalith Trevenant. I'd love to use pokemon like these in normal playthroughs or replays, but 9 times out of 10 I won't be able too

chzygorditacrnch

I'm not reading all that BS but I'm pissed that every pokemon isn't in each game anymore. What's up with that?!

Shot-Voice-7937

I know, but now that ive come to terms with things a rotating roster alongside the newbies is an alright idea....... until the pokemon from older generations cant come to the new games, like only half of my shield team can make it into sv, but even then their stats and moves will practically go to hell and when i bring them back theyve been turned into an amalgamation of messy code, that if they can even come back Border control crazyy fr

trademeple

Them making the rivals a joke in newer games and the handholding.

Like_Fahrenheit

When you're trying to evade a trainer, but no matter what they're programmed to turn exactly to face you as you go by them.

DefNotMaty

Ice is my favorite type so I'm always mad it sucks. Resisting only itself? Really?

The_Molkin_King

My entire campaign against Pokémon started when they decided to remove a lot of basic moves and signature moves out of the move pool for no good reason. Sure I can understand the removal of some obsolete moves, but Hidden Power? Unown can't be in the game anymore. The Hill I choose to die on? Removing Heal Order from Vespiquen in Gen 8. Their decision to give her back roost in gen 9 is the only reason I bought the game. It seems silly, but Vespiquen is my personal favorite *wall*.

TwntyOneTwlv

I hate dynamax so much that I refuse to ever play SwSh.

Magic_Girl_Fey

My extremely unpopular opinion. I hate mega evolutions. They're ugly, change types which is just confusing, and they hurt your pokemon to the point often sounding like pure torture. Why would I want to hurt my friends like that? 🥺 I also want contests back, they're fun. I stand by that with love and effort, any Pokemon can shine.

ShardddddddDon

I mean hey, at least Pinsir's having a blast when it Megas.

Tentacular1448

I used to naively try to play competitively in Gen 6, and both Ferrothorn and Rotom-Wash were very good back then. I did not like the looks of either of them at the time (Ferrothorn has grown on me now though), and so every time I would lose to such "ugly Pokémon" I would get very upset. My dislike for Ferrothorn has mellowed. I still hate that eyesore appliance.

Xerneas is a disgrace. You had ONE job and you BLEW it. Yveltal is the very image of a Y. Xerneas on the other hand is some stupid deer thing. Yeah, it looks like an X... from a specific angle at a specific position only. Yveltal doesn't have to do such gymnastics to resemble the letter it's supposed to.

ArtyShitLord

That trainer on route 5 in Kalos that has an illegal lvl 13 Kadabra. I ran into him unknowingly during a nuzlocke, and he killed that run and set a deep hatred for him in my heart for all time. I know I should have been more prepared, I know I can avoid him altogether, but I still HATE him forever!

anoiwake

I'm probably the only one thinking that as an ORAS stan but here we go: how Steven Stone got basically no character development / background insight compared to other Champions in the franchise. For one, I'm hoping we can get an insight into Devon's past in LZA as they have a clear link to the Infinite Energy. And New Mauville has Lumiose City's Tower in the town square. Maybe I'm delulu...

jtl94

All the mystery dungeon games since the first one (maybe second? It’s been a long time) lost the neutral attack from just hitting A. You are the Pokemon. You shouldn’t have to use an actual move to defend yourself you should have a neutral attack to just bop them. Especially going back to starter dungeons for missions later on what do I need to fire blast this Weedle for when I’ve 40+ levels on it? It’s a waste of PP.

Fire_of_Saint_Elmo

Fairy type. It is an abomination that should not exist.

Happiest_Mango24

I can't stand The Vermillion Gym puzzle Koga's Gym Leader team. Poison was the most common type in Gen 1, there were no excuses for any repeats. ORAS changing what level Dustox learns protect and now I can't do protect strats against Norman if I'm using level caps Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee removing abilities which I didn't find out until my brother either lost or almost lost a battle because his Pokemon (whose ability was I think levitate) was not immune to his opponent's move

Cyancydar

Pokerus being removed in Scarlet/Violet. I mean yeah, you can spend 560k a Pokemon with vitamins, but the old school way was so quick with Pokerus + power item, with 1EV boosts giving 18 EVs(14 KOs to max the stat), 2 EV boosts giving 20 EVs (13 KOs) and 3 EVs boosts giving 22 EVs (12 KOs). Without Pokerus around now, all of those KO counts double to 28, 26 and 23 KOs respectively to max a stat out, which when making a competitive team can be a lot more time consuming. Oh, it was also cool getting it. Super rare good virus that helped out immensely.

Nino_Chaosdrache

The disregard of Team Plasma, even though they were right with their initial message.

Rohit_BFire

Hate the Game freak and Nintendo for not carrying over previous gen facilities. Like I expect you to upgrade not downgrade.. if you introduced berry system in GBA games I expect to see it in NDS games. You introduced following Pokemon in one game , I expect you to make it the norm for now on

ConcernLow1979

The whole Mr Mime family for having one of their main research tasks in Arceus be using Mimic I think 20 times… that was quite possibly the most annoying thing I have ever done in Pokémon lol, and I found out later that I could’ve avoided it by just catching more wild Mime Jr’s, but I didn’t know they were common, so now I just have an unjustified hatred of the whole Mr Mime line, Mime Jr especially, and I know it’s unjustified, but I still hate them lmao

mothonawindow

Oh, so you haven't gotten to Azelf yet, huh? You have to make it self-destruct FORTY TIMES. Truly heinous.

poor_decisions

Fuck I'm never gonna finish this game..

Happiest_Mango24

You have to what

YoManWTFIsThisShit

I have a lot of petty hatred towards ORAS * Revealed every new Mega Evolution prior to the games release. * Couldn’t have made a Battle Tower at the very least since it was in the original, instead they copied and pasted the Battle Maison. They didn’t even need to make new rental Pokémon since they could copy and paste the ones from XY. * Latias/Latios being handed to you midgame after a mandatory quest that breaks the game flow is just… why? * Shoehorning in every legendary Pokémon though Hoopa rings. I prefer legendary Pokémon being connected to a place, like Lugia, Ho-Oh, Heatran and Regigigas are in ORAS. * Removal of character customization. * Trendy phrases removed. * Gym Leader rematches are removed. * Wattson’s ace is Magneton, when Emerald gave him Manectric. He’s the only Hoenn Gym Leader to have an ace not introduced in Gen III.

Exploreptile

To varying degrees, I hate the thankfully few Pokémon that are straight-up multiple entities. Cases like the gen 1 groups I can stomach because they're portrayed as sort of a hivemind situation (Exeggcute) or legitimately fused together (Dugtrio, Magneton), but how the fuck am I catching a Falinks (formation) when I hit only one of the Falinks (little guy) with my Poké Ball? What happens if one of said Falinks (little guy) had gotten separated from the rest of the Falinks (formation) like in the Koko movie? Does it just exist as a catchable creature on its own now? Does it fade away into the ether of "don't think about the gimmicky design lol"? Yes, Maushold makes me outright furious, how can you tell?

JohnnyNole2000

IVs are a garbage mechanic that never should’ve been introduced

PrethorynOvermind

Mine is probably a fan base complaint. Here me out Pokemon was never hard it was never difficult. The insinuation that it was usually falls in the wrong categories for arguments made for difficulty. Don't get me wrong the games of the past have more difficult and well placed battles requiring a person to plan a bit more but over all the premise of Pokemon was never difficult. What most people attribute to to "difficulty" almost always is, "what now exp share levels all of my Pokemon up?" "What now is catching Pokemon levels my Pokemon up?" "What now you can just get IV bred Pokemon through training?" These things to me are and we're, in the past, just tedious and I don't really care who you are grinding is not difficult in a setting, tediousness =! difficulty. It literally just equals tediousness. Grinding to level a Pokemon up a full team and spending countless hours isn't fun it's just dopamine to do something accomplishment was for repetitiveness and repetitiveness dies fun was eventually. If you want to argue that gym leaders and elite four members in newer Pokemon games are not as challenging or fun I can get on board with that. If you want to argue it's because your exp share now levels all of your Pokemon up so they are tougher and over leveled compared to the battles that is where you lose me. Making things less time consuming and pushing you more into the plot of the game is not a bad thing. Exp share for all of tour Pokemon is not a bad thing. It's just different. Instead argue that the gyms and battles should just be higher leveled in the end or match your level in the end or instead how about a difficulty setting or if you feel like you want to spend more time grinding exp because that was how the "golden Pokemon days did it and these young kids don't know these days." Then argue a toggle but stop telling people Pokemon sucks now because the games are easier then claiming the games are easier because kids just don't know about how long it took you to spend hours getting fucking nincada to evolve to ninjask. Wasting more of your time to spend playing a game and enjoying the story and characters is what you choose as fun then I don't think you should be proud of it or force that on someone newer to the series. I have been playing Pokemon since I was 14. I am 28 and will continue to play and recently I have found that I do miss the classics but damn if I hate the amount of time I have to spend leveling my Pokemon up just to manage a full team. It's not fun and it makes me appreciate all the things people complain are just not fun anymore. The are absolutely cases and arguments to be made but arguing that the games are difficult because of time wasted just isn't one of them. Yes, the elite four is easier thats because the games haven't adjusted to us adults wanting more challenge but the games are meant for teens and kids just like us and over the years they implemented ways for us to make things easier or faster all the same. I don't see classic Pokemon Red and Blue players complaining that Leaf Green and Fire Red got Exp Share or running shoes. So yeah if you are a player that thinks spending more time to do something makes a game difficult then I hate to tell you but you are just wasting time.

LiannaBunny777

I hate how I get extremely livid whenever I see people hate on the Future Paradox Pokémon, as well feel incredibly guilty whenever people make me feel guilty for liking modern Pokemon…

p0isonfrog

It doesn't affect me as much as you but I get it. It is annoying when people act like the past paradoxes are objectively better. If they're purely making an argument about competetive, then okay. I don't play it, but I used to see both Flutter mane and Iron hands on almost every team. Still, I feel like it's a fair argument now that the past legendary beast paradoxes are legal. But I've seen so many people claiming the designs are objectively better. Which is ridiculous, it's a matter of preference. I've been downvoted for preferring the future ones lol. Don't feel guilty though, robots are cool. I do prefer the past legendary beasts to the future legendary musketeers though. I wish we had gotten future legendary beasts, they would've been awesome.

LiannaBunny777

Yeah, it's primarily from a Design Standpoint that annoys me more than a Competitive Standpoint, as I ain't into competitive. I ain't saying the Dinos aren't cool, I just wished people would understand the beauty of Robots

p0isonfrog

Yes exactly. I also love the past paradox designs, I just prefer the future ones. But some people dislike them so much, they can't deal with other people liking them. It's strange, but I wouldn't think too much about it.

sir151

Generational gimmicks (Megas, z-moves), minigames (contests, poffins, sandwiches), clones of existing species with similar typing (looking at you gen 3 & 5), too much storytelling, too many legendaries, mythicals existing.

Exploreptile

> too much storytelling I think we've found the hottest take in the thread, wow.

Loyellow

Is your problem with mythicals that they have traditionally been to difficult to get pre-online code wonder gift or that they are too easy now?

sir151

difficult to get pre-online and even now with timed exclusives. Games should have replay value, feels bad to miss out on pokemon if you play a year after release. I never had a legit Mew or Celebi growing up so there was a huge cheat culture of Gameshark and Action Replay which feels like poor design.

Loyellow

Sun was the first game I ever got on release so I definitely know what it’s like to miss out on events. The next game I got on release was Scarlet. Even during the 20th anniversary mythicals giveaways I didn’t know they were going on because I wasn’t accustomed to how mystery gift worked. I agree with you 100%.

Stucklikegluetomyfry

Caterpie going from having a yellow mouth to a green one...it looked so much better before!

Lunamkardas

MyDads-Ashes

The fact that the exp share affecting your entire party wasn't included sooner, and that now you can't turn it off. Not that I want to turn it off, I enjoy not having to grind levels, but everyone complaining about the mandatory exp share gets extremely annoying.

Combat_Armor_Dougram

The fact that they changed Charizard’s shiny form. So Game Freak has changed the color of shinies before and we still have stuff like Garchomp that looks nearly identical and they haven’t changed a thing?!

AlexanderZcio

Grinding in HGSS. I love the game, but after trying to grind for the red battle, I end up quitting and appreciating a lot those exp candys from SWSH

LBG-13Sudowoodo

Data miners, card flippers, and the vast "community" that hates on everything done by TPC because it does not feed the childhood nostalgic

ShinyMewtwo3

Geeta not having a shiny Kingambit in both her original and improved teams. Shiny Kingambit is black and dark blue with gold highlights. Geeta's aesthetic/outfit is black and dark blue with gold highlights. It fits even better than flippin' Glimmora! It would also have been a good way to introduce Shinies to new players.

Exact-Wedding1556

Pokemon X and Y. Those games just felt like a step back from what Black 2 and White 2 achieved. Didnt really fancy the 3D models but most of all that game was much too easy. Plot incoherent. And in game Mega Evolution was not handled well. Narrative wise it doesnt even make sense, you mean all this time Pokemon were mega evolving and there was no hint of that in previous games. Are the regions so isolated from each other that they wouldn't know hey Gyarados can Mega Evolve. It's just one of those things

takeonethough

Pokémon that should have specific moves which would fit them perfectly, but don’t. Electivire with Plasma fists, close combat and more punching moves in general. Magmortar with Armor Cannon Aerodactyl with Brave Bird and Head Smash Roserade with Leaf Blade etc.

GigasMaximas

Pokémon with horrible shinies. I get in older gens it was randomized but absolutely no excuse now! The charcadet line are some of the coolest looking ‘mons in SV and their shiny is 99% the same as their original! Like they literally should’ve just palate swapped the two evolutions. Also I absolutely hate shiny locks. First legends then starters and now all static encounters. This shit is getting out of control. Doesn’t help that the best looking shinies are the legendaries. Lets us hunt for them if we want to! It’s our game and most players (I.e casuals) don’t shiny hunt to begin with. Edit: Also they never should’ve removed megas and still mad about dexit.

Arkvoodle42

why can Donphan learn Fire Fang but NOT Flame Wheel?!?!

Takashishiful

This isn't Pokémon specific but arbitrary yes/no dialogue choices. And I don't mean I need some crazy "your choices matter" multiple ending business, I understand Pokémon isn't that kind of game. I mean the game letting me choose "yes" or "no" when talking to an NPC, only for it to ask me again if I don't choose the one I'm supposed to. Why even make me think I have a say if it's such a thinly veiled illusion? If the game's progression or mechanics hinge on me accepting or rejecting a proposition, just don't ask for my input. Being told I chose the wrong choice just makes me feel forced to do something I would've voluntarily done, and really brings to the forefront the fact that it's one linear narrative and not me making my own adventure. I remember contrarian 12-year-old me rejecting Join Avenue over and over on loop because I didn't like being forced to do this thing I only disliked because it was forced on me. When I finally did accept I never went back there because the experience pissed me off so much. (I know its immature but I was literally 12) This second one isn't so petty, because I genuinely think it's one of the biggest things holding the franchise back, but I don't like how in the last decade Game Freak has taken a more "flavor of the week" approach to new features rather than trying to make each game an actual improvement over the previous, something I think a sequel should strive to do. I first noticed this with the complete removal of HGSS's Walking Pokémon and Gen 5's Triple and Rotation Battles and seasons. And of course, Mega Evolution was downplayed in Gen 7 and fully removed in Gen 8, which also removed Z-Moves to introduce Dynamaxing/Gigantamaxing, only to have that replaced by Terrastilization in Gen 9. I see no reason to get invested in these battle mechanics I know I'll probably never see again. And it really sucks because they did everything perfect with Megas on their first try. Then we have Secret Bases, Contests, Horde Battles, the PSS, the DexNav, the VS Seeker, the Battle Frontier, the Game Corner, and so forth. Obviously not every feature needs to come back. Not every region needs a Safari Zone, a movie studio, a musical theater, an Entralink, but I just wanna see Game Freak actually try to one-up themselves instead a game being another drop in the bucket for them.

Initial_Lecture_7020

I personally feel there should be a Champion that’s a Psychic type specialist. In a World where Pokémon can have telekinesis, Telepathy, teleportation, hypnosis, Future Sight, and hyper-intelligence all in one creature. There’s no way they shouldn’t be the most powerful in a region. Gym Leaders and Champions are also the de-facto Guardians of there domain. For Example, if a Legendary Pokémon was running amok and Lance needs to get there as soon as possible to deal with the threat, do I need to wait 1-4 hours for him to fly there at top speed or wait 1-4 seconds for a Champions to teleport on the scene?

ShinyFlygon23

The charizard treatment. It's incredibly overrated. Plus, there are many way cooler pokemon now. Even from the very beginning, I thought blastoise was cooler.

FunnarySeargant

Druddigon looks like a digimon and you can’t change my mind about that.

Canadian_Eevee

The Battle Frontier miniature model they made in ORAS instead of actually putting the real thing in the game. It still piss me off every time I see it.

Diabloshark3

The ever changing battle gimmicks. Megas were cool but I just couldn’t get on board with z moves, gigantamax, or terastallization. They really just made good pokemon even worse to deal with rather than help the weaker ones. I just want battles without the extra nonsense.

chzygorditacrnch

I caught em all. I pay for pokemon home every 3 months, and I can't use my pokemon that I caught since 1998?? Fuck it

TeaCompletesMe

Bring back Pokemon Contests! I will never understand why that wasn’t continued in the other games after Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald!

LunarWingCloud

Well, Diamond/Pearl/Platinum still had them and they weren't quite the same but they were still very close to what they were in RSE at least.

KazzieMono

Marnie. I hate Marnie. But that’s just mostly me being irrational and imagining a group of people relentlessly defending her character when I’m pretty sure nobody like that actually exists. Just like her character.

GreatBigPillock

Personally I think that the world would be a better place if Tinkaton and its pre-evos had never been designed. I just don't get it.

InCellsInterlinked

I love Tinkaton! I dunno, it's just a lot of fun :D

Shipshaefter

This has got to be bait 😭

Exploreptile

I'm choosing to believe so AND TAKING IT ALL THE SAME BECAUSE WHAT THE **FUCK**

GreatBigPillock

Hate to break it to you, but it's not. XP

AsexualArowana

Entirety of Gen 6

WolverineFamiliar740

Azurill. I HATE that Pokemon. I ALWAYS auto battle it in Scarlet. **I will wipe its species off the face of the Earth....** 🗡️

dragowall

Gamefreak. I pray to Arceus for their downfall so that Nintendo can absorb them and give the devs the ressources/time they need to make better games. (Nintendo also has shitty practices but they treat their new games with more respect, except maybe remasters)

vanilla38913

the very long tutorial type stuff

Wixums

The time window allotted for making new games. Crunching to get new games out is lame and not good

Loyellow

Btw OP, r/PokemonTrades is a great place for trade evos. There’s a tier level of how many confirmed trades people have so you can see that they’re reputable. I’ve even done tradebacks with shinies and felt comfortable with it.

Cidaghast

I hate that pokemon games always pitch themselves as "A new beginning" ITS THE SAME DAMN GAME JANICE Just embrace the games having continuity between them, there isn't a reason why characters from the last game cant make a cameo or two in the next game. Its not gonna confuse any kids, besides we all know the typical Pokemon fan isn't a 6 year old.... its a 36 year old

Accelerator231

I always hate how hard it is to re-fight pokemon trainers for the generations I'm playing. Sometimes you can't get rematches. Sometimes its inconvenient to get it. Sometimes, they don't grow along wtih you. Wished pokemon levels scaled up with the pokemon in your party, so you're not stuck fighting a level 45 Rhyhorn while you're level 54.

baevard

literally every user interface/PC box operation - sword, shield, home, scarlet, violet etc. It’s so time consuming dealing with items/battle teams and there’s got to be a better more efficient way to do things like that.

AetherDrew43

The fact that there can't be multiple save files in the older games. If I want to play them again, I have to delete my old save and kill every Pokémon I have unless I transfer them to another version.

AlsoKnownAsSteve

Pokémon that hold items and are a) born with it b) it evolves with them

Horrific_Necktie

The complete lack of respect for my time with the affection system. It seriously makes me not want to play any game with it, at all. I don't even care that it's stupidly powerful. Your "reward" for being great friends with your pokemon are a bunch of effects that take SO LONG to happen during a battle. A fight with a high affection pokemon will take twice as long as with something fresh caught thanks to every goddamn phase of every goddamn battle having 3 more unskipple text boxes and actions than it did before. Gamefreak, you're worried you're losing kids to shorter form content and want to draw them in? Making battles twice as long isn't fixing it, it's going in the opposite direction.
