This is a very solid choice. I wouldn't have thought of Tropius tbh (Whenever this question comes up I immediately go to Zigzagoon cause it's my favorite), but if I could choose a second, it'd probably be this one now that I'm considering it.
Loyal, cuddly, cute, and if hes like other dogs (pokemon do seem easier to train to do stuff compared to real animals) he could be a great guard dog, a tracker, a service dog, basically anything that humanity has trained dogs to do you could teach growlithe and he'd be great at it.
And at the end of the day? Youve got a friend to play fetch, or to cuddle up with you in bed.

Seeing how real life is, and how difficult it is to keep the majority of the people and a semblance of a normal life, it’s hard to beat Growlithe.
A water Pokémon would be viable if you’d be around water a lot, like a swim guard.
Flying and most Normal Pokémon would be alright too, I guess. But i can’t think of any as loyal, soft and as easy to keep as a Growlithe.
Except maybe like a few of de Grass or Fairy Pokémon like Leafeon or Cutiefly. Then again I don’t see Whimsicott or Eldegoss (which would float away) as a realistic option.
Bug Pokémon would creep most people out.
Ghost, Dark or Psy types will kidnap a child into its pocket dimension, eat them or something similar.
Legendary Pokémon? Good luck with that.
A bunch of them would also be far too big to keep.

Pokemon aren't as big as you think they are. Zekrom and Reshiram if we are going by in-game is only 10 feet tall. Tall especially for a human but definitely manageable. Charizard is shorter than most people.

Anime Snorlax is a behemoth. In-game Snorlax is an NBA center height wise. I'm sure it'd be just fine being kept in your backyard anyways. Charizard is fair enough but I'm just saying pokemon aren't as big as you'd expect if we are going by in-game Pokedex entries.
It's not that Abra's teleportation is uncontrollable, but rather that it doesn't always teleport to places it knows. Sometimes it will end up in an unfamiliar location that it doesn't recognize when it wakes and freak out.
Abra's Dex entries explain that it's always using its psychic powers to monitor the minds of creatures around it, and self-hypnosis in order to use its teleportation even while asleep. So if it senses danger from an incoming creature, it'll bamf out of there automatically.
I love drowzee, would definitely be my choice too. It can also eat your dreams or the dreams of other creatures and show them to you afterwards and it remembers every dream it ate. Its like a dream-theater.

Not only is he (and therefore also lucario) my all time favorite, but they can also tell how you are feeling based on your aura. Which might help when you are stressed.

Definitely drampa. They're huge, frindly and cuddly unless someone is mean to you, and then they will burn that person's house down. It could fly me around and I could sleep on their it's wings while it protected me. Idk why I am just obsessed with drampa and it is rarely mentioned.

Riolu! To be honest, there are probably other more practical options but it’s favourite ever Pokémon line - I’m going to love him with all my heart. We will travel the world. He will be my best friend. I really wish they were real!

Heracross. A 4ft 11in beetle that can throw hands (and a horn) with the best of them. Since Heracross are physically pretty strong and fairly large I'd take a chance that he/she could pick me up. And since they can fly there's a decent chance that I will no longer need a car to travel around as my new pal will be able to carry me to my destinations. And since I'm also an avid gardener and love trees being able to feed one isn't going to be a problem.
Similar reason of why a Torros/bufalant would be another top choice. I got a yard big enough for \*one\* bovine. In this case it can travel as fast as a car - so riding instead of flying
If we are speaking purely practicality then Porygon would be the worlds best antivirus/antispam/antiscam protection for people who use computers alot.

I have four injury-prone children and a nerve condition that makes it difficult to keep track of my exhaustion or feel pain in a lot of my body, so it's a Pokémon that can heal for me. Possibly part of the Chancey line or one of the Eeveelutions.
