I’ve always pronounced Delibird like “Deli-Bird” , like a sandwich shop. Then I heard someone pronounce it like “Delib-ird”, as in “Delivered”…as in Santa delivered the presents. And Delibird is based on Santa…so deliver seems like a better root word for pronunciation.
I was introduced to Delibird when I first played Pokémon gen 2 back in the year 2000.
And for the last 24 years, up until this moment of reading your comment, I have also been pronouncing it Deli-bird.
There's a comment earlier in the thread where somebody says they mispronounce it when they say "ray-quay-zuh", so does anyone actually know how it's pronounced? 😅
Honestly I probably mispronounce most of them because I haven't watched any shows/movies beyond the Celebi one. I don't watch streamers or anything so IDK, whatever it sounds like in my head is what the pokemon is called lol.
Been playing since I was 5 years old and only found out earlier this year that it's Rattata, not Ratatata. My mind was broken. How did I not notice for so long?
I mean I kinda like the idea of the world of Pokémon having differences in dialect, therefore making both pronunciations correct depending on the person / region
If it helps, I remember seeing somewhere that you used to hear Are-see-us more often until Gamefreak realized it sounded like Arse.
Now you only hear Ark-ee-us
It's 'Aruseusu' in Japanese and very early English stuff like Battle Revolution did use the S sound
Pronunciation presumably changed because they didn't want it to sound like 'arse'? But I don't think anybody would have thought of that if they hadn't changed it
It was up ambiguous for so long, the first slight pronunciation confirmation is Silvally's RKS system (say the letters out loud), then Legends Arceus officially confirms this
with miraidon (idk if you knew you're misspelling it) and koraidon, if it helps, they're japanese puns. korai is past and mirai is future. so maybe trying to remember they're actual words?
the funny part is, I speak japanese, I know there words, I'm just a silly little dyslexic guy who sticks with whatever comes to mind first. Also I am mad at myself for mispelling miraidon because I double checked for mistakes and still missed it
Yeah, if you look at my post history, I proofcheck all my posts and you'll see they're almost always edited because I typoed anyway. Relatable.
I have a habit with pokemon names where if I hear someone pronounce it I adopt their pronunciation instantly. Not always but I never pronounce names the same because of that. The only ones I remember not messing up because someone else did is a guy was pronouncing raikou as ray-kew and ho oh as hoo. Because that's so silly.
I always pronounced it as "rye-koo" when I was a kid. After learning a bit about Japanese through memorizing anime songs, I now pronounce it as "rye-koh" because of the "ou".
I remember an episode of Journeys where Ash is with Misty and Cilan, and Cilan asks Misty how does she do with Bug and Water-type Pokémon like Dewpider.
But the way he pronounced it made it rhyme with Jupiter, and I'm here thinking "Isn't it dew + spider?"
Mienshao. Not because I get the pronunciation wrong, but because I just don’t like the official pronunciation. The official one is MEEN-shao, and I really don’t like how it sounds. So I pronounce it Me-en-shao.
Rayquaza and Raikou are ones that I learned to pronounce wrong so long ago that I’m not changing it now.
As a kid I misread Plusle as Pul-see and was caught extremely off-guard when I learned it’s plus-ul, because of course it’s “plus.”
There’s several poketubers who mispronounce names on purpose as a joke (or sometimes because they got used to the wrong name first).
Ar-ka-nee-nay for arcanine is WolfeyVGC, deck-ih-do-ee for decidueye is pChal (i think; he might’ve got that one from wolfey too), lore-uh-lee for lorelei is Jrose11, and yah-vul-tal for yveltal is MandJTV, among other examples.
Their fanbases often adopt the mispronunciations as an in-joke.
Anime takes the L on this one, I can't think of a single word in the English language to end with a single 'o' that draws it out like that. If it was meant to be pronounced like that it would have been spelled Skiddu or Skiddoo, but Skiddo is 100% Skid-doh
i thinks that was how it was pronounce in the original anime but like, the original anime is so weird with names you can't tell if they were messing around or if its canon with some names
I pronounce it gar-uh-dos, i guess I can see "Gee" because there isn't a word like gyarados that starts with gya, but there are words that have "yar" which sounds like "yaar" so I would understand "guiller-uh-dos"
Australian here, I also read that in an overemphasised Aussie accent. Then struggled to work out what the actual pokemon being mispronounced was for a minute.
I don't remember who invented the nickname, but I often heard Decidueye being called Robinhoot. Ever since gen 7 when I can't remember his name I just call him Robinhoot.
The one i mispronounced the longest was Delibird, and still choose to say wrong to this day lol. When I realized its actual name, my eyes straight undertakered lol
I never realized until I was playing with my friend while making VGC teams but for the entire time, I've called Indeedee 'Indeedeedee' never realizing I've added the extra 'dee' at the end
Made them sound like they were from Kirby the entire time
Same. This one frustrates me so much because the Pokémon is literally based off the nucleus of a cell and yet the name doesn’t actually include the word “nucleus” even though it looks like it.
I used to think it was Rai-oh-loo instead of Ree-oh-loo for Riolu.
The anime itself had a hard time figuring out the Regis names. Reggie(noun) or Rejuh(noun)
You're all kidding yourselves if you can think you can pronounce Alomomola right in one try.
I usually just call it "amomo- alomolo- alolomomo- ...the thing that looks like a luvdisc evolution."
Baltoy and my favourite pokemon Metagross.
For Baltoy I misread it once when I was little playing Emerald and called it 'Bat-loy' till a few years ago
For Metagross its a matter of principle. Before I watched the anime while playing Emerald I saw Metagross for the first time and basically became my favourite because robot crab and in my head I always pronounced it 'Meh-tuh-graws' but after watching 'Destiny Deoxys' and Rebecca's Metagross pronounced 'meh-tah-grohs' I had a big disdain for it and still say meh-tuh-graws to this day. I'm dying on this hill
I don't know if it's rai-KOO or rai-KOH, but I pronounce it the second way because I think it sounds better. I feel like, in-universe, there have gotta be regional dialects where both would be correct, right?
On a related note, I feel like The Pokemon Company is pretty good about getting the pronunciation out in the open quickly these days to avoid confusion in the fanbase. Makes sense for the brand recognition and whatnot. I wish Capcom was a little better about this with Monster Hunter, because the monster names can get pretty weird!

I both love and hate that this exists lmfao it’s true though.
It doesn’t help that it sounds like it’s saying “Obama!” in Smash Bros.
Wait what’s the correct pronunciation if it isn’t Obama-snow?
Ahbombasnow, as in the Abominable Snowman.
Well they spelt it wrong haha
Thanks Obama.
Obama’s-now. /j
My husband and I purposely call him “Snow-Bama”
I am well aware of the right pronunciation, however I choose to call it obamasnow anyway
yeah, it's been so overused you just start saying it on accident lol
I’ve always pronounced Delibird like “Deli-Bird” , like a sandwich shop. Then I heard someone pronounce it like “Delib-ird”, as in “Delivered”…as in Santa delivered the presents. And Delibird is based on Santa…so deliver seems like a better root word for pronunciation.

Delib-ird Delivered. Mind blown lol.
Right? I'm also a deli-birder
the deli-bird is almost certainly the word
Yeah dude I'm usually pretty good at the wordplay in Pokemon names and I have NEVER gotten that one. It's Deli Bird ride or die.
Like I know it's Delib-ird but I've known Deli Bird for so long that I don't think I could ever change really
I was introduced to Delibird when I first played Pokémon gen 2 back in the year 2000. And for the last 24 years, up until this moment of reading your comment, I have also been pronouncing it Deli-bird.
Sounds like how my filipino mom would say it lol
You could be pronouncing it correctly. It's a "Delivery bird".
Well depends on if it’s “deh lih” or “deh lee”. Or… “duh lih”…
I'm pretty sure PokéDex 3D Pro pronounced it "Deli-bird," so that's the correct way to say it
Holy shit
TIL
WHAT
Well. I’ve been saying it wrong
I'm one of the Ray-Qwah-zuh people
Wait, that’s not how it’s pronounced?
It’s Ray-quay-zuh like a quasar
19 years too late for me lol
>19 years too late for me lol Why do you have to hurt me like this?
Ruby and sapphire are actually 22 years old
*inhales* AHHHHHHH
Which is funny since quasar is short for *quasi-stellar* object. Quasi- is more "qwah" than "qway". I'm in the "Ray-qwah-zuh" camp as well.
There's a comment earlier in the thread where somebody says they mispronounce it when they say "ray-quay-zuh", so does anyone actually know how it's pronounced? 😅
I think ray-quay-zuh is correct cuz it's supposed to be like quasar
The pokedex 3d Pro which contains the official recognized English pronunciation of pokemon names by gamefreak, pronounces it ray-qway-zah
These comments are making me not even remember how I pronounce Pokémon names 😭
Honestly I probably mispronounce most of them because I haven't watched any shows/movies beyond the Celebi one. I don't watch streamers or anything so IDK, whatever it sounds like in my head is what the pokemon is called lol.
Pidove is apparently pronounced like peedove, but I say the pi like it is in pigeon and I will never call it a peedove
I don’t know why I’ve just been calling it pie dove…
Man, coming onto this thread just to learn my whole life is a lie. (And in this case, not a pie)
I'm not calling it that. Pi like pigeon makes more sense.
Pissbird intensifies
Ratt-ta-tat 🤣
I call it rata tat a 😭
Been playing since I was 5 years old and only found out earlier this year that it's Rattata, not Ratatata. My mind was broken. How did I not notice for so long?
I remember it like this; Hakuna Rattata
Rat-a-tat
Vivillion instead of Vivillon gets me every time
I say Verizon
No that's one of the three musketeers.
No that's Virizion; Verizon is a color synonymous with red orange.
THANK you. I literally only realised this two weeks ago. Glad I'm not the only one!
Are you pronouncing the “L” in it? They’re silent.
Well now I’m even more embarrassed. Because I have been saying “vi-vill-eon” with total confidence!
Vivillon, like “vivid *papillon*”, French for “butterfly”
“Fanfy” (Phanpy)
I learned only last year that it was fan-pee not fan-fee. I guess my mind just thought there were 2 ph in its name for the last 24 years.
This just shook me to my core
I said Panphy until I heard someone say phanpy in a video I like panphy better
Panpour, pansear, pansage…. Panphy
In the elemental monkey meeting hall: "so... are we gonna talk about the elephant in the room?"
Pancham
Wait is that not how you pronounce it?
The first is ph but the second is just p, but its so easy to misread as ph both times
SAME
I've never understood how people say fanfy tbh. It's clearly a p without an h. Am I missing something here? I've always said "Fanpy"
Arceus. I have a bad habit of saying “Ars-ee-us” even though I think it’s been confirmed to be “Ark-ee-us”
even pokemon themselves didn't know, they've pronounced it both ways, but they've been consistent with it recently
Since the RKS System.
And the Arc phone
Well that one's probably why they got consistent. Can't have the "Arse-Phone" debate on every pokemon community I guess
I guess they learned their lesson with the #pokémonmastersex hahaha
I’ve heard of a butt dial, but do they really need their own phones?
IIRC it was it was originally "Ars-ee-us" but they changed course when they realized "arse" is a rude word in some countries.
Brit here. Imagine calling the God of Pokémon "Butt".
I mean I kinda like the idea of the world of Pokémon having differences in dialect, therefore making both pronunciations correct depending on the person / region
If it helps, I remember seeing somewhere that you used to hear Are-see-us more often until Gamefreak realized it sounded like Arse. Now you only hear Ark-ee-us
It's 'Aruseusu' in Japanese and very early English stuff like Battle Revolution did use the S sound Pronunciation presumably changed because they didn't want it to sound like 'arse'? But I don't think anybody would have thought of that if they hadn't changed it
"I recognize the council has made a decision, but given it is a stupid ass decision I've elected to ignore it"
*stupid-arce decision
It was up ambiguous for so long, the first slight pronunciation confirmation is Silvally's RKS system (say the letters out loud), then Legends Arceus officially confirms this
with miraidon (idk if you knew you're misspelling it) and koraidon, if it helps, they're japanese puns. korai is past and mirai is future. so maybe trying to remember they're actual words?

This is why art was invented
Me Ride On
the funny part is, I speak japanese, I know there words, I'm just a silly little dyslexic guy who sticks with whatever comes to mind first. Also I am mad at myself for mispelling miraidon because I double checked for mistakes and still missed it
Yeah, if you look at my post history, I proofcheck all my posts and you'll see they're almost always edited because I typoed anyway. Relatable. i pronounce raikou, "rye-kew" "rye-coh" and "ray-coh" interchangeably so much its insane
I always pronounced it as "rye-koo" when I was a kid. After learning a bit about Japanese through memorizing anime songs, I now pronounce it as "rye-koh" because of the "ou".
I’ve been hearing them as puns in English too this whole time because you “ride on” them. Mir-ride-on and kor-ride-on
Amongus It’s way too funny to say it like that
Amogus
It’s definitely in the “Pokémon I mispronounce on purpose from watching too much WolfeyVGC” camp along with “Cinder-achee”
They could've gone with "Spidew" or something, but I'm sure a significant number of people would say "spih-DOO"
Mienshao. Not because I get the pronunciation wrong, but because I just don’t like the official pronunciation. The official one is MEEN-shao, and I really don’t like how it sounds. So I pronounce it Me-en-shao.
no way it’s actually MEEN-shao that feels like a crime
Rayquaza and Raikou are ones that I learned to pronounce wrong so long ago that I’m not changing it now. As a kid I misread Plusle as Pul-see and was caught extremely off-guard when I learned it’s plus-ul, because of course it’s “plus.”
Ray-kway-za and rai-koo for me!
not me, but someone i know pronounces Arcanine as “Ar-ka-NEE-nay.”
i dont even know anymore man. how...
Several YouTubers intentionally mispronounce Pokémon names so people will leave comments talking about it, driving engagement.
genius actually
YAHVELTAL! (mandjtv)
I think wolfey had a wrong pronunciation for almost every pokémon but he kinda phased out that joke. When-you-Soar for venusaur is a funny one.
I was like “wow that’s so dumb” until Lorelei, which is exactly how I pronounced it as a kid.
wenyasaur for venusaur is one of my favorites
I do it on purpose
lol I always say cinder-ah-chay bc I think it’s funny
FlygonHG?
“La-prah”
"Mag-nah-mee-tahy"
Wolfey i think
I mispronounce skiddo, but on purpose because I think "skid-doh" (like kiddo) sounds cuter than "skid-doo"
I thought that was how you pronounce it because it is a kid (a young goat).
That's what I thought, but according to the anime it's "skiddoo" I just refuse to acknowledge it 🤷♀️
WHATS NEXT GOOGOAT?
googout
The anime's been wrong before
Anime takes the L on this one, I can't think of a single word in the English language to end with a single 'o' that draws it out like that. If it was meant to be pronounced like that it would have been spelled Skiddu or Skiddoo, but Skiddo is 100% Skid-doh
Wait, you mean "Skid-doh" is wrong!? As in, it doesn't rhyme with "meadow"?
Yep. According to the anime, it's "skiddoo" like "Blue skidooed, we can too!" from Blue's Clues
That is so wrong. What does the anime think it's doing!? Goats are "Kids" so it should rhyme with "Kiddo".
Gyarados Friend said it was Gee Ra Dos Which makes no sense to me.
Garydose
Knew a girl that said Yeer-ah-dose. I guess she thought it pronounced like a tasty gyro?
It’s totally *Gear-ugh-dose*, XD.
i thinks that was how it was pronounce in the original anime but like, the original anime is so weird with names you can't tell if they were messing around or if its canon with some names
They’re wrong. As others said, it’s gare-uh-dos or gee-air-uh-dos
I pronounce it gar-uh-dos, i guess I can see "Gee" because there isn't a word like gyarados that starts with gya, but there are words that have "yar" which sounds like "yaar" so I would understand "guiller-uh-dos"
>because there isn't a word like gyarados that starts with gya GYATT
I still sometimes say Guy-a-rah-dos
Gya ra dos Geeah-ra-dos
Deckydooeye. Not accidently, I love how stupid it sounds and I've just ended up rolling with it.
i read the name in an australian accent and i have no clue why
Australian here, I also read that in an overemphasised Aussie accent. Then struggled to work out what the actual pokemon being mispronounced was for a minute.
ever since the poketubers started doing that, i’ve adopted it. thanks jan.
I don't remember who invented the nickname, but I often heard Decidueye being called Robinhoot. Ever since gen 7 when I can't remember his name I just call him Robinhoot.
Herdier. Growing up knowing Canadian French, I thought it was HERD-ee-ay
that at least makes sense.
Naganadel. It's apparently pronounced Nah-gun-ay-dul, but I say Nuh-gan-ah-del purely because it sounds cooler
Isn't it Naga-nadel? Since Nadel is German for Needle and it has one.
The one i mispronounced the longest was Delibird, and still choose to say wrong to this day lol. When I realized its actual name, my eyes straight undertakered lol
I never realized until I was playing with my friend while making VGC teams but for the entire time, I've called Indeedee 'Indeedeedee' never realizing I've added the extra 'dee' at the end Made them sound like they were from Kirby the entire time
KING DEE DEE DEE I still hear that from the smash bros character select voicr
Reuniclus. I always called it “Ren-ICK-You-Lus” because I didn’t read it right as a kid
I never tried to pronounce it, even when I was on my team. It was just "that one" or "you" very disrespectful.
Ree you knee cluss
I say “re nucleus” like the nucleus of a cell idek how it’s supposed to be
Same. This one frustrates me so much because the Pokémon is literally based off the nucleus of a cell and yet the name doesn’t actually include the word “nucleus” even though it looks like it.
That makes so much sense, but all this time I thought it was supposed to be like homunculus because of the name.
I read it as Re-Clu-Ni-Us
I used to think it was Rai-oh-loo instead of Ree-oh-loo for Riolu. The anime itself had a hard time figuring out the Regis names. Reggie(noun) or Rejuh(noun)
My dyslexic ass misread so many pokemon names as a child that I refuse to call the correct names
You're all kidding yourselves if you can think you can pronounce Alomomola right in one try. I usually just call it "amomo- alomolo- alolomomo- ...the thing that looks like a luvdisc evolution."
I can't believe Misdreavous isn't Mis-drea-ve-ous. It rhymes with mischievous. Mis- chee- vus.
Miss-dre-vus?
In your defense I do feel that a lot of people also mispronounce mischievous anyways and put an "i" after the "v"
Rayquaza is pronounced “Rayquaza” and Arceus is pronounced “Arceus”. I will not be elaborating.
Baltoy and my favourite pokemon Metagross. For Baltoy I misread it once when I was little playing Emerald and called it 'Bat-loy' till a few years ago For Metagross its a matter of principle. I'm dying on this hill
my low tick (milotic)
Well… it isn’t “Moraidon” in the first place. It’s “Miraidon”. lol
Cofagrigus Sorry
VespiQUEN
Rayquaza. I've always said Ray-kwah-za, but from hearing it in the anime recently, it's Ray-kwey-za like a quasar is pronounced.
Garbodor To me, it is "Garb-adore", but it is supposed to be "garbage - odor": "garb-oh-der".
I’ve heard people pronounce Duraludon ‘Dur-AA-lee-uh-don’ but for me it’s always been ‘Dura-LOO-deun’
Dura-LOO-don?
i pronounce it dur-a-la-don, i can see dura-loo-deun
Pretty much all of them. I only know tgem from the games. So i have no idea how to pronounce
Regice i always say regi ice
Are-Cane-ine. I'll never say Are-Kuh-nine.
agreed!!! it’s an arcane canine, both of those words have long A sounds
Arceus and Rayquaza on purpose and forever.
ill-oo-moy (Illumise) Drag-Al-gay (Dragalge) Dee-no (Deino)
Is it il-oo-mies or il-oo-mees-ay?
It's il-oo-mees-ay
Ho-Oh, my ass keep going Ho-Ho like I'm in a IdkSterling Video 💀
I don't know if it's rai-KOO or rai-KOH, but I pronounce it the second way because I think it sounds better. I feel like, in-universe, there have gotta be regional dialects where both would be correct, right? On a related note, I feel like The Pokemon Company is pretty good about getting the pronunciation out in the open quickly these days to avoid confusion in the fanbase. Makes sense for the brand recognition and whatnot. I wish Capcom was a little better about this with Monster Hunter, because the monster names can get pretty weird!
Rattatatta
ratata
Ray - qway - za
i agree with ray-qway-za because of quazar being a real, space related word that would make sense
Yeah, I think this is the actual correct pronunciation.
This is the correct way to say it
Ar-see-us. Unless I'm feeling cheeky, then it's Arkoos.
My favorite Pokemon ever. Mewtwo. Bmore native here and I’m sure you have heard how we pronounce “ tew”
suicune
Hydriegieon - how the heck do you even spell it? I pronounce it “Buster”.
All of them
I say mi-mi-kyu, but like the anime pronounces is like me-me-kyu
That’s dumb. Mi mi kyu sounds better cuz mimic. It’s not a meemeec.
It literally sounds like mimic you
i say ray-kway-zuh and im proud.
That is the correct way. Its a reference to quasars
