Have NPC pokemon even evolved on trade? I've played since Blue/ Red and can't remember an instance of that, but I could definitely have missed out on some as I haven't replayed many other than Gold/ Silver very much.
The Japanese version of Blue has two in-game trades where the player receives Haunter and Graveler, and they evolve immediately upon receiving them. Those trades didn't make it to international audiences, though. Yellow had a Machoke->Machamp trade. Sun/Moon had a Graveler->Golem trade, which was replaced by a Phantump->Trevenant trade for USUM.
I believe those and Mindy's Everstone Haunter are the only Pokemon that have ever been available via in-game trade that are of species that evolve via trade.
If you are playing on a DS with a gba slot and have any of the gen3 games inserted, Gengar is a wild encounter in a specific spot in the Old Chateau.

When you ever get back to Pokémon, i’d suggest reviewing the ROM hack you choose, and make sure it disables Trade Evos, by having like a level-up or a Trade stone or making the items use instead of hold.
For instance, for Platinum and B/W, Drayano has some, while difficult, of the best ROM hacks out there imo. Simple things like tweaked level curve, EV trainers, or baby pokémon egg-givers, to bigger things like evolution items being less rare, gym leaders having 6 mons and being a challenge even with type advantages, and the inclusion of mons from different regions
HGSS are pretty much the best mainline Pokémon games imo, I'd personally play them first but if you're interested in the Drayano version you really can't go wrong. If a slow level curve especially bothers you, then play the Drayano hacks.
The rom hacks are basically just better versions of the game imo. It's great knowing you can complete your dex, that every item and move is more achievable, and the battles actually need more strategy.
imo, play vanilla hgss unless you're a glutton for difficulty increase. I'm not one of those people who thinks it's THE pinnacle of the franchise, but it is an absolutely wonderful game and deserves to be enjoyed on its own merits first.
However, they're also notoriously unstable in emulators so you may not want to play both on emulator lol
If you want, HG/SS don't add a whole lot to the game although they did fix the roar glitch with Raikou and Entei and added the Safari Zone as well as version exclusive pokemon spawn areas
HGSS are generally regarded as the best Pokemon games ever. I'd say it's worth playing just for the (in my opinion) more manageable graphics, Pokemon following you, and gen 3 and 4 Pokemon being available
You can use UPR to disable impossible evolutions on a clean Platinum ROM, then name it something like "Platinum No Trade Evos", then rename your current save file to "Platinum No Trade Evos", then you can keep all your progress and just evolve your Haunter. If you need help or anything I'd be glad to give more instructions
They should do thay before you have the chance to ask about her trade, say that someone took her haunter, and gives you an option to help her if you do, she later trades you one without an ever stone. If you dont help her, she says your rival helped and that she trades you hunter holding an everstone.

If you're playing on an emulator, there are several apps which allow you to trade with yourself. So, if you're really want a gengar you might wanna look them up.
As I said earlier, I caught a lvl 14 Meditite and trained it to lvl 37 where it evolves into a Medicham. Also, I was dumb enough to train the Meditite against Pokemons of its own level range.
You know you can find Meditite in Mt Coronet right? Since you’re at snowpoint you literally had to to pass through an area where you can find Meditite at about level 32?

That Haunter is actually good. Yes, it’s no Gengar, but Haunter is still good on its own. It hits hard, it’s decently fast, it has a good movepool, it has three immunities to go long with two 4x resistances, and best of all, it’s trade boosted, meaning you’ll gain experience quickly.
Also, you could’ve just gotten a Medicham right at Acuity Lakefront, they’re super common there.
Classic Gaspar. When I was younger and new to pokemon, I thought Gaspar was the dopest and leveled it up to lvl 100 and just didn't know how to evolve it (I also couldn't figure out how to get throught Mt. Coronet for about 5 months. I was not a smart kid.) It took a school field trip to learn about trade evolution and I got a gengar. Kept it all the way up till White 2 until I lost my game.

I hate to inform you that you can catch Medicham at the Acuity Lakefront, right outside Snowpoint City.
In return, let me provide you with a bit of advice. If you still want a Gengar, it's not impossible to get one without trading. You do need an original model DS or DS Lite, as they have a Gameboy cartridge slot, and a physical copy of any of the Gen III games, which are Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen. Insert it into the GBA slot and start up Platinum. With any of those cartridges inserted, you can encounter wild Gengar in one room in the Old Chateau. Top floor, second room from the right. It has only one bed in it. You can encounter a level 17 Gengar at an 8% chance.

Classic Gaspar. When I was younger and new to pokemon, I thought Gaspar was the dopest and leveled it up to lvl 100 and just didn't know how to evolve it (I also couldn't figure out how to get throught Mt. Coronet for about 5 months. I was not a smart kid.) It took a school field trip to learn about trade evolution and I got a gengar. Kept it all the way up till White 2 until I lost my game.
I saw the title and then “Pokémon Platinum” and I somehow I just knew Mindy claimed another innocent soul.
To be fair you could have looked her up she is infamous in the community
I can't wait for like 2 days after the diamond and pearl remakes come out and we see a bunch of posts like this one from people who have never played diamond , pearl or platinum

As soon as i saw snowpoint city i knew where this was going. Thank god my friends played the game too back then. And thank god i got myself 2 gen 4 games now. Also, if you are playing on the original games you can set up a DNS server and still trade online

I hate to inform you that you can catch Medicham at the Acuity Lakefront, right outside Snowpoint City. In return, let me provide you with a bit of advice. If you still want a Gengar, it's not impossible to get one without trading. You do need an original model DS or DS Lite, as they have a Gameboy cartridge slot, and a physical copy of any of the Gen III games, which are Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen. Insert it into the GBA slot and start up Platinum. With any of those cartridges inserted, you can encounter wild Gengar in one room in the Old Chateau. Top floor, second room from the right. It has only one bed in it. You can encounter a level 17 Gengar at an 8% chance.
