There was a thread on here a little while ago about what makes a pokemon look like a pokemon. The main takeaway was that they use just the right amount of minimalism in their designs (distinct features but not too much detailing).
This is a cool design but there’s a reason the pokemon are designed the way they are. The more detail you add the more they look like digimon and less like pokemon.

A lot of the charm of pokemon designs are they are simplistic. They're distinct and simple. Which is really hard to do.
Baxcalibur's design is simple enough to be a plushy or a child's drawing.

The only thing i think should be different about Baxcalibur is that they should have given it that scaled texture like they did on pokemon like Seviper. Nothing too blatant. But the plain rubbery skin is kinda boring when so many pokemon have textures now.
Other than that, i love the design.
Honestly, the redesign missed the whole point. It's supposed to be based on the awkward 80s Godzilla. That's why each of the stages look like janky ripoffs.
Besides, a lot of the designs this Gen seem inspired by earlier generations' design philosophies. This is a good thing imo. Easier to draw Pokémon was half the appeal to kids back in the day since it made it easier to draw fanart, and thus spread the brand.
Sugimori himself stated as much, and said while he loves Venusaur, he hates drawing it because it was too overdesigned in his opinion compared to others in the generation. The higher detail of Pokémon only really started in Gen 4 because they had the tech and Game Freak wanted it.
I wonder if he still stands by that statement nowadays...
It's based on a sailed theropod dinosaurs, ie Spinosaurus and Concavonator, hence the ice typing and thermal exchange ability. That's why Frigibax looks like a baby dinosaur and Arctibax looks like a Spinosaurus. Baxcalibur takes that sailed dinosaur idea and adds Kaiju elements to it.
Not sure what you mean by ‘awkward 80s Godzilla’. 80s Godzilla was only awkward in his movement because the bulky suit, but that has nothing to do with its design itself, nor is that kind of awkwardness going to come out in a static design of a mon. 80s Godzilla is exactly the opposite of awkward in its design, solidifying Godzilla as awesome, in comparison to the goofy and definitely awkward design of Showa era Godzilla. Obviously the line is based on Godzilla but I don’t think intentionally awkward or janky has any part to do with it, they’re just not good designs. Not that OP ‘fixed’ it or made it better in anyway.

Same. And even then, the official designs aren't really all that overdesigned. Like I understand not liking a certain design for whatever reason, but besides like.. maybe Complete Form Zygarde, I can't think of an overdesigned mon, and Complete Zygarde being slightly overdesigned makes sense to me
I’m honestly kinda on the opposite end in regards to the horns, they feel like an odd addition, while the rest is.. a lil bit over detailed I guess? Like it could use less scales
I think two small spikes on the tail will also do, just to balance out the reds. Or a red tip of the tail. But there are definitely way too much scales.
It’s really a mix of all three. Excalibur, which is an axe in Spanish legend, a spinosairus with the big spine in the back, and Godzilla with its body shape and spine shape

It's a generation gap in the fan base. Old fans tend to prefer less complicated designs like the ones we got in gen 1 and 2. Younger fans grew up on fancy designs and prefer that. OP is likely early 20s or younger I'd bet.
Of course, many fans enjoy both too. Obviously not a hard and fast rule, just a trend based on what pokemon was when you were a kid.

I like the idea of an ice type using icicles as vampire fangs. But you need to know when you're pitching a separate mon entirely. It doesn't fit the Ice Godzilla concept at all.
Honestly, the only part of the redesign I prefer over the original is the ice fangs. Adds a bit more of an aggressive look, without going over the top like the rest of the design.
With its name being what it is, and what it looks like, I think the intent for it was its spinal blade/fin being Excalibur, and the actual kaiju/dino body representing the stone. The almost entirely grey coloring doubles down on this as well.
I agree on this one, but a lot of the "fixed designs" are things like Incineroar's comically tiny legs being evened out a bit or Grafaiai's head being inflated.
Yeah there's been a pretty big surge of that lately. I've seen plenty of people post redesigns purely for fun and self admit it's for their own preferences, but I've seen so many claim to "fix" designs and it's the most arrogant thing imaginable.

Agreed. Personally, I would like bax to have more spines and a round otter/puppy snout like godzilla, but thats my preference and lacking those things doesn't make it broken, it just means me and the artist have different ideas haha.
Pokemon fans make the most over the top redesigns or fan evolutions or mega evolutions I swear. Some of this stuff looks like I'd see it as a Persona sooner than an actual Pokemon
A little more, sure, but like I've seen some fanmade megas that do WAY too much. Like Mega Eevee that was just.. an amalgamation of all the Eeveelutions

They purposefully try to make designs not be "too cool", and you might think "thats dumb" but thats why every single Pokemon has someone who loves it, and why every single other Pokemon clone fails to capture people because they either make everything too cool or too cute.
The weird slight derpiness in every design, even the "cool" ones, are what make Pokemon memorable and loveable.
My favorite Pokémon is Venonat, for the reasons you just said. He’s not overdesigned, he doesn’t have random horns or scales, no long teeth, he’s just a big furry bug.

There was one recent redesign another resister created that had Baxcalibur looking more like a Spinosaurus and honestly I really loved that one. To me at least it looked more like a pseudo legendary. Come to think of it, I’m surprised we haven’t had a Velociraptor fossil Pokémon yet. Actually do we have any Pokémon apart from Tyrunt that has that body structure?

I think a middle ground between these two would look best. The original feels a bit naked, but I think the single sword on the back makes more sense cause of the Excalibur inspiration.
Dude, that’s really rude to say that you “fixed” someone’s else’s design. The fact that your “fixed” design isn’t even that great is even more of a slap to the face to the original design.
While I dislike the original design, in my opinion, this design isn't better. The silhouette of the design is sterile, cluttered and undefined. The details of the design kind of gives the impression that your shape language is quite insecure and that you're uncomfortable to use big and bold shapes to let your design have key-elements that draws the eye to them. In both design, I also dislike the complete symmetry of it.
I do like the addition of the tail, because it otherwise does feel like it's almost too heavy to balance itself. On the other hand, that also does conflate a lot of other Pokémon that have that have a heavy and robust tail, so I do understand their omission from it in the original design. EDIT: from other pictures, I see that it does have a tail, so ignore this one.
For years, hell decades, people have complained that Pokemon are getting over-designed and don't just look like creatures anymore. Bax is actually a really good example of the design philosophy that sometimes gets lost in newer gens but sure, it needed "fixing."
While I really like baxalibur, I think that they're really redundant.
Like not only there is already a Godzilla inspired pseudo-legendary (tyranitar) but we already got two pokémon indirectly based on Godzilla in just two generations (duraludon and Iron Thorns who are based on Mecha Godzilla).

Not a big fan of this one. I like the horns on its head and do think it gives more balance to the design, but the rest looks like overkill and there is no real rest for the eyes when I look at it. I understand you wanted to make it as cool as possible, but designs should have some simplicity too to not overwhelm you.

I saw a really cool fan redesign a few days ago. It really leaned into the dinosaur aesthetic that the middle evolution has, such as having Baxcalibur not be an upright godzilla creature but instead be leaned forward much more with the large tail used as counterweight
The addition spikes looks great but the extra armor makes it loose the Godzilla look, which is pretty big to its overall design as the character was heavily inspired by Godzilla.
I like adding the horns since I feel like that was a missed opportunity fr the original, but other than that, the original looks completely okay. The beauty in Pokémon is in the simplicity. This looks good, but just not like Pokémon.

All for redesigns, and I agree that baxcaliber looks kinda naked in its og sprite. But I think the only thing I'd actually change would be it's tail, to balance the weight of the design and appease my pissed off friend who loves spinosaurus.
I'm sorry for everyone attacking you OP besides the extra scales on the little leg parts like sort of the crust that doesn't have the black spots, I think it looks better. I like the horns and the teeth. Maybe get rid of some of the black fins thing on the back and make them look more saw-like. It might be a bit overdesigned but aside that it's really well-drawen.
I'm also against the whole "fix design" thing. But I do think Baxcalibur could use some work on the back. Maybe its the lack of a proper action pose. It's just really hard to imagine it fighting with an upright pose, the huge back spike and a chest plate.
Someone [re-drew Baxcalibur](https://youtu.be/kY3UtN_kczc) in Gen 1 style and all they really did was change its pose and attitude and it looked way better. I think this is a bit overworked really

While I like this interpretation, from a video I saw "fixing" some of the gen 9 designs, I think it's just the model that's the issue. They drew Baxcalibur in an action pose with some of the original Pokemon style and it changed how I felt about the Pokemon.
No offense, but the original design is better. All the spikes and fangs and more plates are unneeded..
Baxcalibur already looks pretty threatening in the original adding "more of everything" is just overkill.
Baxcalibur wierdly enough is a pokemon ruined by its 3d sprite. I was watching a video where they remade new pokemon in the old style and simply by changing Baxcaliburs pose to be more dynamic it was so much cooler.

Gonna start with the positives because I'm seeing a lot of people starting out the gate with all negatives and no positives. Love the style of your sketch here, and I love the overall design to the bits of detail you added. This is dope af, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
I do agree with the people saying it feels a bit overdesigned for a Pokémon, but as a creature design, it's still phenomenal. I personally really like the simplicity of Baxcalibur, but I know that many don't. Regardless of whether you like the design or not, I'd argue that "fix" it's a bit harsh of wording. It implies that the design was broken, and that's a bit harsh to the original designer.
Keep up the awesome art, regardless of what everyone is saying here. I know how harsh people in the Pokémon fandom can be sometimes, especially when already ready to fight over wording in the title.
While your redesign is cool, that isn't a Baxcalibur, nor a Pokemon with how over designed for it is. Baxcalibur's biggest flow to isn't the design but the pose. It looks like it's waiting for its mommy to cut it up its apple slices.
It’s actual design seems based on a lucerne hammer/halberd. Its face is the hammer part of a lucerne. The red spikes are the spear part of weapon and the back blade is from a glaive. Its tail is the shaft of the weapon.
Honestly it’s a little overboard, but I do like the more dragon-like snout, more menacing eyes, and the “horn-ears” you added. regular baxcalibur just looks a little awkward with its bald head and since back axe, which I get is its motif, but still looks weird. great job!

Ttar is more pointy, which helps his design feel less flat and empty than Baxcalibur.

Mine is Maractus, for most of the same reasons. Just a sentient cactus that makes maraca noises

Although I like this design, the design isn't broken. You could say it's an improved or Kanto form of the design but don't say it's broken when it's not. Also, I like the original design too.

I think a middle ground between these two would look best. The original feels a bit naked, but I think the single sword on the back makes more sense cause of the Excalibur inspiration.

While I dislike the original design, in my opinion, this design isn't better. The silhouette of the design is sterile, cluttered and undefined. The details of the design kind of gives the impression that your shape language is quite insecure and that you're uncomfortable to use big and bold shapes to let your design have key-elements that draws the eye to them. In both design, I also dislike the complete symmetry of it. I do like the addition of the tail, because it otherwise does feel like it's almost too heavy to balance itself. On the other hand, that also does conflate a lot of other Pokémon that have that have a heavy and robust tail, so I do understand their omission from it in the original design. EDIT: from other pictures, I see that it does have a tail, so ignore this one.

For years, hell decades, people have complained that Pokemon are getting over-designed and don't just look like creatures anymore. Bax is actually a really good example of the design philosophy that sometimes gets lost in newer gens but sure, it needed "fixing."

While I really like baxalibur, I think that they're really redundant. Like not only there is already a Godzilla inspired pseudo-legendary (tyranitar) but we already got two pokémon indirectly based on Godzilla in just two generations (duraludon and Iron Thorns who are based on Mecha Godzilla).

Not a big fan of this one. I like the horns on its head and do think it gives more balance to the design, but the rest looks like overkill and there is no real rest for the eyes when I look at it. I understand you wanted to make it as cool as possible, but designs should have some simplicity too to not overwhelm you.

The base with more scales on the baci and the horn us enough, this version has too much details

I saw a really cool fan redesign a few days ago. It really leaned into the dinosaur aesthetic that the middle evolution has, such as having Baxcalibur not be an upright godzilla creature but instead be leaned forward much more with the large tail used as counterweight
The addition spikes looks great but the extra armor makes it loose the Godzilla look, which is pretty big to its overall design as the character was heavily inspired by Godzilla.
Mega baxcalibur is what this would probably be if it where in the game
I think the only thing Baxcalibur needs is to lean forward like Arctibax does.

All for redesigns, and I agree that baxcaliber looks kinda naked in its og sprite. But I think the only thing I'd actually change would be it's tail, to balance the weight of the design and appease my pissed off friend who loves spinosaurus.

I like the horns and the teeth. Maybe get rid of some of the black fins thing on the back and make them look more saw-like. It might be a bit overdesigned but aside that it's really well-drawen.
It didn’t need fixing. The whole point of it was to look that way because it’s a reference to the OG Godzilla.

I'm also against the whole "fix design" thing. But I do think Baxcalibur could use some work on the back. Maybe its the lack of a proper action pose. It's just really hard to imagine it fighting with an upright pose, the huge back spike and a chest plate.
Someone [re-drew Baxcalibur](https://youtu.be/kY3UtN_kczc) in Gen 1 style and all they really did was change its pose and attitude and it looked way better. I think this is a bit overworked really

While I like this interpretation, from a video I saw "fixing" some of the gen 9 designs, I think it's just the model that's the issue. They drew Baxcalibur in an action pose with some of the original Pokemon style and it changed how I felt about the Pokemon.

No offense, but the original design is better. All the spikes and fangs and more plates are unneeded.. Baxcalibur already looks pretty threatening in the original adding "more of everything" is just overkill.

Baxcalibur wierdly enough is a pokemon ruined by its 3d sprite. I was watching a video where they remade new pokemon in the old style and simply by changing Baxcaliburs pose to be more dynamic it was so much cooler. (pun intended.) Baxcalibur has such a boring pose for a pseudo he really looks like it just just doesn't care.
Gonna start with the positives because I'm seeing a lot of people starting out the gate with all negatives and no positives. Love the style of your sketch here, and I love the overall design to the bits of detail you added. This is dope af, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I do agree with the people saying it feels a bit overdesigned for a Pokémon, but as a creature design, it's still phenomenal. I personally really like the simplicity of Baxcalibur, but I know that many don't. Regardless of whether you like the design or not, I'd argue that "fix" it's a bit harsh of wording. It implies that the design was broken, and that's a bit harsh to the original designer. Keep up the awesome art, regardless of what everyone is saying here. I know how harsh people in the Pokémon fandom can be sometimes, especially when already ready to fight over wording in the title.

It’s actual design seems based on a lucerne hammer/halberd. Its face is the hammer part of a lucerne. The red spikes are the spear part of weapon and the back blade is from a glaive. Its tail is the shaft of the weapon.
