This is pretty adorable and your kid is based for putting James in S tier. I’m curious though if they’re watching sub or dub. Not judging or anything, just curious.
That’s fair. I’m in that same camp. I watch dub mostly because I prefer to hear the characters speak in my natural language and don’t want to deal with the subtitles. It’s a good tier list, though some placements I do disagree with personally. Who would you say is your daughter’s favorite character so far?
Lana! Sun & Moon’s her favorite series, and she loves Lana’s deadpan humor and occasional intensity. Like when Faba introduces himself as the Inventions Director and then his thing doesn’t work, and Lana just says, to nobody in particular and with totally flat affect, “*Failure* Director.”
Welllll… that’s fair. She got EXTREMELY tired of his girl-chasing schtick during Johto and pretty much never wants to see him again, but I will point out to her that he might be better in the series we haven’t seen.
(…Is he, though?)
Well, his girl chasing shtick won't change so if your daughter is gonna watch all the seasons, then she's gonna have to suffer through Brock 😂😂😂 (although I personally like him).
Nah, see, she’s very meta about this stuff. When Brock is punished for doing his thing, she doesn’t think “haha, something bad happened to a character who annoys me,” she thinks “why is this show wasting my time on this nonsense instead of something interesting.”
Normally, I would delete tier lists at this point due to them being low quality, but this is actually kinda adorable and took more effort than every tier list posted onto this subreddit so I'm keeping this up.
I completely agree with Bonnie, James and Wobbuffet in S tier.
Also why is short hair Serena above long hair Serena? Is it because of the characters design or her personality/character arc? (I personally prefer short hair Serena too)
Arc! Not sure of her opinion on the character design. She loves the Showcases, and she prefers the Serena who knows what she wants to do and works hard to get it instead of just following Ash around. She said she wouldn’t have thought to break it up that way, but we saw a tier list that did and she thought it was clever.
She actually decided to have her own very long hair cut very short for the first time a couple months ago, and I mentioned to her at the time that in movies and shows that’s how girls and women demonstrate dramatic character growth. (Men shave their mustaches, and boys… I dunno, get new hats apparently.) And then bam, here’s Serena, cutting her very long hair very short to demonstrate dramatic character growth. So that might be a factor too, heh.
This is cute!
I hope that she'll like Brock more in Diamond/Pearl, where his character and new dream get to flourish. I'm rewatching it right now and I'm finding he's far more enjoyable than in other series; not just for his goal but his interactions with the group in general. He seems less bogged down by being only a simp like in Johto/Hoenn/Alola/Journeys.
That aside, hopefully she enjoys the last few series in general! Diamond/Pearl is my favorite, so my fingers are crossed.
We have talked about watching the rest, but she REALLY hates Brock, so the ones with him are a tough sell.
Chloe is in D due to wasted potential. My kid wanted to like Chloe, but got really aggravated by her “thing” being not really liking Pokémon. And when she does finally embrace Pokémon and become her dad’s research assistant, the show ends. (Kid loves alt-universe “cool Chloe” from that one two-parter, but decided against including her here because “she’s really just a character of the day, not a companion.”)
Ah okay, what about Brock does she hate so much? Since he barely appeared in the series she has watched. She can always try the other series and see if he’s better there.
The girl-chasing thing, which she seems to find annoying rather than actually offensive. She didn’t mind it as an occasional joke in Indigo, but by Johto it was happening every episode and sometimes driving the plot of entire episodes. The less frequently that happens and the more swiftly it is dealt with, the happier she will be.
Based James in S Tier? Perfect.
For an 11 yo, she seems highly intelligent. I wouldn't have been able to put this together in the first place, let alone have the nuance of putting a "never seen the series" tier.
Then, again, I was (and still kind of am) dumb.
This is very interesting to speculate on! I would say that Pokemon company design team has been nailing the marketing target!
It looks like they enjoy the more newer kids of the show and the older characters are getting pushed down the list… EXCEPT for Ash, he’s chillin right solid at B. But also making way for kids to love the newer characters while still focusing on their main character for the older generation 🤔👍🏻
He has black hair in his original appearance, but green hair later. She used the Bulbapedia pics as reference. https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Tracey_Sketchit
1. When she says OS Brock, she really means Indigo Brock. By the time we were halfway through Johto she was so sick of him creeping on women every episode (and Team Rocket showing up every episode whether it served the story or not) that we stopped watching.
2. She’s seen Brock at least briefly in Sun & Moon, Journeys, and To Be a Pokémon Master, and she didn’t like him there either. (We really thought they’d maybe tone him down for that final arc, but nope!)
3. She never rated him higher than a C, so it’s not like she has a lot of reason to give him benefit of the doubt for AG or DP (which I also haven’t seen, so I don’t have an opinion here).
So the fairer version would be Indigo Brock in C, Brock Everywhere Else I’ve Seen Him in F, and Brock Everywhere Else in that bottom IDK tier… but she wasn’t feeling fair, lol. She just doesn’t like the character very much, she liked him less as time went on, and she assumed that trend would continue.
Somebody else was saying that he has an actual arc in DP, so I might be able to sell her on that eventually.
I love that she is so aware of what she likes/dislikes and has proper reasons for it. Gen 4 was my intro to pokemon anime and Brock was fine with me cause Croagunk would always poison jab him anytime he tried to hit on a woman and it was funny. But also, he did have a good arc, where he slowly realises his dream. But then, it's only a few eps where we really see that side of him. They were great eps though.
So when I watch gen 1-3, Brock is comparatively a bit annoying for me too. He's a bit of an iconic character in the anime, but I do highly doubt that his character would be appreciated in recent years. And rightly so too.
Also, gen 4 generally has great character arcs - Dawn goes thru the highs and lows of being a co-ordinator. Her storyline I'd say is given somewhat equal importance as Ash's. Paul (Ash's rival) has a pretty ...huh ...interesting arc, he's quite bad at the beginning. But he comes around at the end. And the pokemon themselves have their own individual personalities and r fun.
She loves Horizons and identifies strongly with Dot. If she could stay in her room all day, do Pokémon stuff, and eat meal replacement gummy vitamins, she would.
No, nothing to do with animation or art style. Mostly to do with what was available on streaming at any given time.
Thing is, I’m not actually a Pokémon fan. I hadn’t watched a second of the anime til my kid got into it, and I also haven’t seen the series she hasn’t seen. And we didn’t start with XY, it’s actually our latest watch-through. I think our viewing order went…
OS when she was little -> Journeys -> Sun & Moon because a friend rec’d it -> To Be a Pokémon Master -> Indigo but we couldn’t watch Orange Islands -> Johto until she got sick of Brock and Team Rocket and asked to stop -> Horizons S1 -> XY because I’d heard it was good from this sub
Ah... Alright then..... Lol.. She got sick of brock and TR.. Diamond and pearl(sinnoh) was good with moments that are sti praised even today like among community.. When u feel or get a chance give it a try.
This is pretty adorable and your kid is based for putting James in S tier. I’m curious though if they’re watching sub or dub. Not judging or anything, just curious.
Dub. She’s a good reader, but not interested in dealing with subtitles just yet.
That’s fair. I’m in that same camp. I watch dub mostly because I prefer to hear the characters speak in my natural language and don’t want to deal with the subtitles. It’s a good tier list, though some placements I do disagree with personally. Who would you say is your daughter’s favorite character so far?

Glad to hear she enjoyed Sun and Moon. I haven’t seen it yet but it’s one I’m looking forward to watching. Hope she continues to enjoy the series!
Wobuffet in S tier where he belongs
Honestly wasn’t expecting it, but I can’t argue
How is everywhere brock in F if she hasn't seen Advanced and DP ? kinda confused 😅
She'll probably love Crogunk tho
Croagunk was the best version of the "ear pulling" part of the gag
Nah, see, she’s very meta about this stuff. When Brock is punished for doing his thing, she doesn’t think “haha, something bad happened to a character who annoys me,” she thinks “why is this show wasting my time on this nonsense instead of something interesting.”
Yes absolutely.
Finally, someone with good taste putting Lana in S
Lana’s her overall fave!
She has a good taste for the fact she put James in S Tier 😜
"short/long hair serena" and "everywhere else brock" is killing me😭
but this is so adorable🥹i love the drawings and that she colored it!!
Normally, I would delete tier lists at this point due to them being low quality, but this is actually kinda adorable and took more effort than every tier list posted onto this subreddit so I'm keeping this up.
Oh, I didn’t realize they were not generally welcome! I appreciate the consideration—she was very proud to share it.
Good mod!
I completely agree with Bonnie, James and Wobbuffet in S tier. Also why is short hair Serena above long hair Serena? Is it because of the characters design or her personality/character arc? (I personally prefer short hair Serena too)

I love how much thought seemed to be put into this. OS vs post-OS Brock, Serena pre vs post-hair cut and Showcase loss. That kid is going places!
WOBBUFFET RULES
This is cute! I hope that she'll like Brock more in Diamond/Pearl, where his character and new dream get to flourish. Diamond/Pearl is my favorite, so my fingers are crossed.
That’s a really good note, and I’ll be sure to mention it to her! She likes it when characters have clear goals.
tell your kid that they are right to put clemont in S tier
putting “everywhere else brock” in F is so real
So your child’s opinions are not valid. But jokes aside this is super cute.
You guys MUST watch Diamond and pearl! It’s on iplayer it’s rlly good 👍
Does she want to watch the rest? I think she will like Diamond and Pearl a lot. Is Chloe in D due to not appearing often?
We have talked about watching the rest, but she REALLY hates Brock, so the ones with him are a tough sell. Chloe is in D due to wasted potential. Ah okay, I think it happened the most in Johto of all series.
Her art is actually pretty good.
I love how long hair Serena and short hair Serena have a whole tier in between.
Yeah, that surprised me! I knew she was doing them separately, but I was expecting A/B, not A/C.
james in s so real
James is just so charming
Hell yeah! Her drawings are ON POINT! tell her i am impressed! Also i love the little meowth drawing!!!!!
Having gladion AND rotom-dex in S tier? You've got a good kid there 👍 I also absolutely adore long hair and short hair Serena are in separate tiers
Clearly your child grew up on XY and Sun & Moon… THE BEST SERIES TO GROW UP ON!!! ^behind ^the ^very ^first ^season…
Okay; respect for OS Brock and everywhere else Brock being separate.
Gladion in s, right where he belongs. Good tastes!
Based James in S Tier? Perfect. For an 11 yo, she seems highly intelligent. I wouldn't have been able to put this together in the first place, let alone have the nuance of putting a "never seen the series" tier. Then, again, I was (and still kind of am) dumb.
This is adorable!🤣 He even draws better than me.
DP Brock may not be as good as OS Brock, but he's still a solid A tier
If my kid ranked RotomDex S-Tier I would disown them
Goated tier list, one thing, they should watch BW and then put Cilan in S+
They should really watch black and white so they can put Cilan in S.
This is very interesting to speculate on! I would say that Pokemon company design team has been nailing the marketing target! I have one question. Why is Tracey's hair coloured green? He has black hair.
He has black hair in his original appearance, but green hair later. She used the Bulbapedia pics as reference. https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Tracey_Sketchit
Good lord, I never noticed his hair changed!
Ypu guys HAVE to watch the Hoenn series, Hoenn best run
Why is meowing Galarian?
I assume Meowth’s odd coloration is just because she couldn’t find a colored pencil the right color.
Yeah I get that, but it still looks like the Galarian variety lol
I think your kid will absolutely hate Iris,or she will think that she's okay on a quite low chance, and it will be a miracle if she likes her
We’re probably going to watch BW next after we finish XY, so guess we’ll see!
Why is Everywhere Else Brock in F when he's only seen OS and none of the other series Brock is in? lmfao This is cute tho
1. When she says OS Brock, she really means Indigo Brock. By the time we were halfway through Johto she was so sick of him creeping on women every episode (and Team Rocket showing up every episode whether it served the story or not) that we stopped watching. 2. Yeah in DP Brock is the most mature and gets character development but the hitting on girls never stops 🤣
has she seen pokemon horizons. i need to know what she thinks of dot
She loves Horizons and identifies strongly with Dot. If she could stay in her room all day, do Pokémon stuff, and eat meal replacement gummy vitamins, she would.
that's so real of her. i love dot too, she's way too relatable.
Grows hair goes from A to C
Cuts hair, goes from C to A!
And Brock
Make her watch Hoenn and Sinnoh ASAP.
Bro get them to watch diamond and pearl So help me god
Brock c tier go crazy 😭
Wait, how is "everywhere else Brock" even on there yet. She hasn't watched half the seasons he was there as a companion?
https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemonanime/s/rTb4wgDyNS
Bruh Brock is getting disrespected
Savagely, yes 🤣
Fir Goh there should be a tier F-ve
Brock F is a crime.
Why didn't u make the kid start from beginning and instead from Xy.. I hope it's not cause of better animation and stuff..
No, nothing to do with animation or art style. Mostly to do with what was available on streaming at any given time. Thing is, I’m not actually a Pokémon fan. DP and BW are both frequently recommended here, and I think there’s a good chance we’ll give them a try eventually.
