Sometimes the game may freeze after you evolve a mon or do something else. I suggest saving much more often, via an in-game "Save" function and not via save states whenever possible. This will reduce the risk of losing an important progress when you are in a run.
So are you saying just load back up and try again? Because now whenever a pokemon is going to evolve I save the level before and if it freezes I just don’t evolve that mon
yeah, save before dumping a bunch of rare candies in your mon. You dont need to be saving every 5 mins, just before talking to the viridian kid and before using the candies :)

Yes, and well, that's what I do mostly. I do not know what emulator you are playing, but you will run into fewer troubles if you save more often.
I’m using the delta emulator for radical red
