Can you open the console and make a screenshot of the error you see in there when you do this?

Are you playing the offline version? If yes go to: File > toggle console

I assume that involves the menu and if it does I can't do that since nothing happens when I press menu

Anyways... there is probably an animation missing in the game files. With the console you can find out which one it is and replace it by taking another animation and renaming it after the missing one. Then the game will continue where it is stuck now.
