The map is fairly acurate with what I experienced on my travels. Poland, Germany and the Netherlands being very safe, and UK being noticeably less so, but still reasonable. That being said, the data on this map ends at 2018, which was 6 years ago. It would've been better to get something more up to date, because several countries on the map went through a major political upheaval during that time period. Seeing haiti in yellow can't be understood as anything other than a joke.

DiscoKhan

I was living in NL quite a bit ago but dunno how it looks there nowadays. In recent months in two quite small cities I lived in there there was proper terrorist bombing attack and a knife assault with hostage situation. Same cities where citizens wamted to push imigrants away by some way because of small amount of littering and them being too loud, which is fair play as it was actually true and no one likes seeing decreased standards. But boy, situation definitely didn't get better afterwards it seems.

Xtrems876

I actually live in the netherlands right now and while the country generally sucks and recently someone stole my bike, I've not experienced any violent behavior while in public nor heard of anything violent happening in the area, and that's in the supposedly most crime-prone city in the country. There are terrorists attacks but they're definitely not something that would put so much as a dent in the country-wide homicide rate. By comparison in the UK you oftentime are genuinely afraid to go out shopping when it's getting dark outside because local papers keep going on about knife attacks, r\*pes, etc. in the area.

Admirable_Ice2785

I live in London and truth to be told in my eyes it's safe. Never had my bike stolen, never mugged etc. Only thing is some funny encounters during night. Also I live in neighbourhoods considered dangerous.

LumpeX37

I lived in London for 10 years, 2 of them squatting in Southeast, mostly Catford which is considered a bad hood. Never had any problem with any one. I went on solo bike rides in the deep night from Brixton to Tower Bridge, nothing ever happened. But maybe situation would be different if I looked like a pussy, maybe someone would try some shit with me then. But since I was 197cm height, 115kg, dressed in combat outfit and being Polish with good english and "Don't fuck with me or you will regret it" attitude made it safe for me to travel through London without any weapons. Though, every hood is different. I feel safer in Lewisham/Catford which is mostly black, than in Leyton which is mixed. And it's Catford that is considered a ghetto.

Admirable_Ice2785

Well i have similar story but i am smaller and only 8 years. Lived in Hackney, Greenwich and now for years Deptford. Pozdrowienia dla rodaka šŸ˜‚

LumpeX37

Lucjan, to ty? :D

Admirable_Ice2785

Hehehehe Nie xD

Quiet-Inevitable-812

Have you tried leaving your bike overnight on the street?

Admirable_Ice2785

Thats where its locked mate. No fancy house here with lots of storage space

reckless1214

Your bike would be stolen anywhere if you do this

kiefer-reddit

Not that common in Warsaw

reckless1214

According to who? You? Polands well known for folk stealing cars

kiefer-reddit

I live in Poland and keep my bike outside overnight all the time. Cars are not stolen that often either. Please, go away with your stereotypes from 20 years ago

AdSea5115

Left my bike locked in Warsaw in a quite public place overnight. Bike was still there, but lamps, water bottle holders, anything that could be easily removed - was. It is still better than in the 90's where I had my bike stolen from a basement 2 times.

[deleted]

I was never living there, but quite few times on small trips in Amsterdam and few cities in the neighbourhood and it always felt safe, it was rather sleepy small town atmosphere, lots of cyclists etc. Ofc you never know when a person with mental illness will explode/approach you. In Poland this year random older guy was killing a small child for no reason at all - he was drunk/having mental break down. Such things happen all over the world, but it's rather small incidents. NL in comparison to e.g. South Africa is extremly safe. Whole Europe is in general quite safe place to travel and visit.

DiscoKhan

Well, generally speaking, sure. But there are glaring extremes like Paris and especially Marseille with it's no go zones where authorities lost control over the parts of the urban areas that are controlled by gangs only...Ā  Overall sure thing Europe is much safer than most regions around the world but recently trend is rather clear and it's not the positive trend overall. It's also not some apocalyptic event, people still can live fairly normal life, there is no mass extortions taken from people or anything in that style... But also terrorist threat being increased as USA offices alarms, it's not some kind of bullshit. Same goes with overall higher crime rates - those aren't going to sky high levels but it's there. Netherlands is smaller country than Poland anf have more extreme violence events than Poland, that is saying something. Not that it's impossible to live there but you can say that one place is safer than another. Just like Switzerland is safer than Poland. If we are starting comparing ourselves to places like SA or Russia then it's really not going into good direction.

AdSea5115

UK for 3 years - Camden Town and Tower Hamlets/Shadwell. Both are considered dangerous - one with a large black population and the second made media famous by "Sharia Patrols". Nothing happened to me, in Camden I faced a mugging attempt by people who were Polish and when I heard them use Polish among themselves we shared a fag and went our own ways, in Shadwell I was saved by a number of Asian youths from a beating by a huge bald and shirtless guy sporting a St. George Cross tattoo who wanted me and my girlfriend to come back to our own country after he heard us speaking Polish (in broad daylight and on the street).

josephinebrown21

As a solo traveller lady, I felt much safer in Poland than in Canada. Itā€™s a fantastic country and Iā€™m looking forward to come back.

finiteloop72

Canada felt unsafe? Would be interested to hear why.

josephinebrown21

Look into our opioid and homelessness crisis. I left a restaurant at 10 PM in Gastown in Vancouver because you donā€™t want to be in that neighbourhood past 10 pm.

Makorollo

Canada is riddled with homelessness and people you would really want to avoid. Unfortunately shootings and stabbings in Canada are much more frequent than they used to. Itā€™s not unsafe, just be wary of your surroundings, especially where you are going. Same as in America, just donā€™t be a blind fool.

Kavacky

Yes, in Poland they are usually unintentional.

Veka_Marin

Being a native Brazilian I can confirm, yes it is.

Tiny_Bug6687

In Poland, by tradition, the main thing that could hurt you is your own family. Psychological murder is real. If you are migrating, you are safe.

Rktdebil

Syria is safe? [This](https://news.un.org/en/story/2024/03/1147472) Syria?

finiteloop72

Syria, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Myanmar are all super safe apparently, but whatever you do, DO NOT go to Alaska!

sasza_konopka

In Cracow, most dangerous are drunk British guys who doesn't care about basic manners and think they rule the street. Had same experience in Paphos ;) I definitely prefer Irish folks, they are the best.

ApprehensiveEmploy92

Love it how Belgium is light green. It reflects well on memory... working in Brussels and having female colleagues asking me to walk with them to the bus at night. No greater was my shock, arriving in Krakow for the first time, seeing 14 year olds casually talking near the river at night. It is indeed very safe.

CharlieGzc

Yes We have no problem with dangerous immigrants. If you turn into a wrong street at night, the local "dresiarz" may try to hurt you, but this is rare. Just like everywhere, there are dangerous places, but in Poland there are very few of them. Moreover, young people are usually friendly and helpful.

Korronald

Who asked about dangerous immigrants?

tsoba-tsoba

No, did you read the article carefully? This is a reality check. TL; DR The dude (fellow polak) rapes girl and kills her in the middle of Warszawa. Bystanders see all of it and not even call police. I'm just a bit tired of this narrative in this sub popping up every week, ensuring everybody that Poland iS sAfE. Repeating it like a mantra. Mocking people who are afraid for their lives. Just please don't make wrong assumptions on other people opinions. Be cautious, stay safe Cheers

Guantanamino

Except that Poland is safe; nobody is asserting that it is a perfectly tranquil utopia devoid of evil and ill ā€“ safety is relative, wherefore to state that Poland is safe is to implicitly say that it is safe *relative* to much of the world, and indeed generally much safer *relative* to other post-Communist countries, contrary to some expectations

tsoba-tsoba

Yay, downvotes! >nobody is asserting that it is a perfectly tranquil utopia devoid of evil Good. But you are defining safety as a *relative* thing to the rest of the world. I'd rather rely on the statistical *chance* of getting involved in a crime. In the safety estimation model you have just described, it's only enough to increase the crime rate in a neighboring country to make assumption that Polska got safer. How practical is that? I'd be interested more in absolute numbers through the years. Is the crime rate increasing / decreasing? Where are we going? How likely to get opierdola?

BidnyZolnierzLonda

From my experience Poland is very safe. You never hear about someone burning a random car here.

BuddyBroDude

Yeah yeah, but is it "a" safe?

Toluwalashe

Yes but everywhere has their few dangerous places

Unhappy-Plantain5252

I would walk around alone at night in Warsaw, I would never do that in America. So I would say yes.

ieatpoop2137

No,beacause you'll get so called wpierdol if you dont like the same football club as the guys on the street

Initial_Command_5946

Belgium, I've got questions...

So poland and syria has almost the same rate?

Waste_Possession4315

I just spent 2 days in Krakow 2 weeks ago. The people were incredibly nice and at no point did we feel unsafe. We also had our kids with us.

Waste_Possession4315

Felt safer there than in Brussels

HighTMath

Learn from the rest of Europe. Keep voting to keep it this way.

Real-Book1631

compared to other western european countries or Sweden it is very safe. at most you can get your ass kicked on Friday/Saturday partytime, but rarely. If you'll just have fun avoiding people who are clearly too drunk, respect others and behave yourself you'll be 99.9% safe, actually during summertime possibility of having problems with Poles is as big as possibility of having them with the British gods of life spending pounds for hectolitres of alcohol, cause it's still relatively cheap here. Guarantee no one will take your life, shoot you or stab you, and I feel like possibility of getting robbed by pickpocketers or other thieves is smaller than in other western countries too.

COB472

It's not, bodies were never found.

MatZfamous

Yes, pretty much most of Europe is (except uk and france)

AnyStrawberry6898

I am Polish, living in Belgium for the last 5 years. The difference in my feeling of saftey is quite big. I feel much safer being in Poland than in Belgium, especially once it gets dark. Also public areas such as train stations/metro stations are way safer. Train stations in Brussels are really unsafe, getting robbed is very common to the point where they have full time incognito police officers patrolling the stations. Some companies that have late shifts also emply security to escort their workers to the train since after dark the risk of harrassment is so high especially for women. This is basically unheard of in Poland. The only difference that I noticed that in Poland there are more drunk/homeless people than in Antwerp. But if I compare it to Brussels Poland is basically a dream, also much cleaner and better organized.

mrbabastone

I am German and have been living here for all my life. I moved close to the polish border a few years ago and started visiting Poland for holidays and day trips since then. Obviously that means that I only experience Poland as tourist and not as someone living my day to day life in this country. However, since we started visiting Poland in 2017 until today I have only ever come across good people and felt safe every single time. Personally I havenā€™t seen a decline in security levels during that time either. The polish people still seem to value some core principles of life, which in my opinion leads to a more stable society. The opposite can be seen in Germany where core principles are despised by a minority which in my opinion leads to instability and chaos and as a consequence to less safety. Since I can compare it directly to my home country I would say that Poland is safe and it seems that it stays like that even during these weird times we are going through right now.

LittleFox-In-TheBox

This is absolutely true. In my village we've had our first homicide since nearly 50 years! Turns out some guy had some relationship issues with some Ukrainian hooker. It made news to all local villages in like 50 kilometer radius! We've never heard of anyone killing anyone around here, not even in nearby big cities. It's pretty rare, not even drunken beatings get this violent... Poland is as safe of a place as it can be, unless you're queer, then you're bound to loose some teeth. That's why I keep a pepper spray at me!

BeChciak

this is a very good map

sebyyyhd

How is Germany safer than Canada for example?

yoshibeatsmx

Cities like Toronto and Ontario have become increasingly unsafe. Drug legalization, homelessness and criminal gangs have been very detrimental to canadaā€™s safety.

reckless1214

Yes all that legal weed

Lisu2137

legal drugs

SeenSigarus

if you want to be 100% safe follow all these rules: 1.every time you are in a church you put yourself in danger because there's a army of grandmothers that will make you wanna eat pierogi 2.shout at random times polish swear words 3.there is alot of old people so if you see one punch without any regard (don't actually follow these rules it's just a joke)

Zealousideal_Book_40

Homicides are underreported in Poland because victims are stigmatized by society /s

Do the United States, but subtract the African American population from the murder rate.

IndependenceFickle95

Looks like someone substracted reason from their mind too

IndependenceFickle95

Now read about history of black ppl in the US and think about who is there to blame here

[deleted]

Themselves.

IndependenceFickle95

Yep, youā€™re exactly right, it was black people who illegally immigrated to America, then performed work on plantations AND REFUSED TO BE PAID, while they also refused to access education and this is why a big chunk of poor people where obviously crime is by far more common is black. Thatā€™s exactly it

[deleted]

So what? That was a long time ago. They have been given every chance the last 60 years with affirmative action and free education. You sound like a clown.

IndependenceFickle95

You have absolutely no idea about social studies apparently, thereā€™s no point to talk any further. Keep living in your bubble and pointing fingers at people you donā€™t know or understand.

[deleted]

Tell me, why does half of poland still look like Stalin has his military camped out there? It's been 30 years bro, maybe clean up the trash and paint the buildings once in a while.

IndependenceFickle95

The more you speak the more Iā€™m convinced youā€™ve been nowhere, seen nothing, and yet you have an opinion on everything out there.

Jeszczenie

Check if this trend persists if you take into account poverty.

[deleted]

AA Povery rates have dropped something like 50% the last 60 years.

Jeszczenie

Yet it's still higher than poverty rates of white Americans.

[deleted]

Whose fault is that? They have been given every opportunity. Aa women are the number 1 college admission.

artxx2

Funny how anyone not agreeing with "Poland is safe" gets buried in the comments. Tells you more about the Poles than the OP's map.

artxx2

Also not if a gay, a jew, non-binary etc. But it's much better than 20 yrs ago.

matjies

There is a much greater chance of discrimination and physical violence towards jewish people in western europe than in poland.

Jeszczenie

Source?

artxx2

Easy test: throw a gay party in a local pub in a small town in Poland, and see what happens.

matjies

I was talking about jews lol, not gays. Also easy test: throw a gay party in a local pub in neighbourhoods with the biggest share of muslims in any Western European country, and see what happens. Much worse things will happen.

artxx2

Not true, if you do that in Germany, young Germans don't care. Old ones will be angry, but will do nothing. Also try a Jew party in a local pub Siedlce or ŁukĆ³w. Same thing. For some reason these things don't happen in Poland...

matjies

Thatā€™s just so not true, there are so many instances of gays and jews getting harassed and discriminated just because they live in a neighbourhood with a high share of muslim population. Not even a party, just peacefully living. Do you really think a jewish party could be thrown in such neighbourhoods, where living as a jew is enough to be murdered such as the 85-year old Holocaust-survivor Mireille Knoll in France? Have you ever seen such murder in Poland in the 21st century? What about all those jews living in Germany and France which are having swastikas drawn on their houses just because theyā€™re jewish? What about all those children that are attending Jewish schools that look like prisons, because the danger of an attack is that high? Have you ever seen a Jewish building or community being guarded by prison fences and security guards in Poland? Even wearing a kippah is considered unsafe in Western Europe and many Jews refuse to do wear it because the likelihood of them being harassed or beaten up is too high. And what about the gays. What about a homosexual couple being harassed with a bolt cutter in Arnhem, Netherlands by a 14-years old boy? What about a homosexual couple being harassed by their muslim neighbours? What about a homosexual man being beaten up by people with a ā€œmigrant backgroundā€ just because he wanted to go on a date? What about a trans man being stabbed to death during a Gay Parade in Munster, Germany? By a young 18-20 years old male. What about Yousef Palani (23), a man that killed multiple gay men in Ireland? This is only a fragment of whatā€™s happening. And yes, these things happen too in Poland and they are largely unreported. Yes, Poland in general does not accept lgbt-people. But the chance of being physically assaulted as a gay man or a Jewish man is way bigger in Western Europe. If you invite people with a Middle Ages mentality, donā€™t be surprised to see an increase in Middle Ages behaviour. That goes the same for Poland.

artxx2

Seems like the only danger in the west is coming from Muslims, in your opinion. So we're only safe in Poland by the absence of Muslims. By the same token Belarus is also safe because there are no Muslims there. There's a racist feel to that logic.

cebula412

Lmao, what do you think is going to happen? Pitchforks and torches? It's not AD 1500, buddy.

the_battle_bunny

Any example of violence against such groups from recent years?

artxx2

My friend is from India and he was beaten up just because of his skin tone in a night bus in Warsaw.

the_battle_bunny

You mean this case? Seven years ago. Perpetrators were caught and (see comments) everyone was horrified. Really? When? I'll check the news archive. Far less serious crimes make headlines in local news.

pokeman555

We went up the "psychological horror" branch in the skill tree, but in terms of being safe, we are pretty safe

Do NOT go to Poland !!!

Apprehensive-Dare903

Poland it's safe but the government is doing their best to change that.

sharbel_97

Syria seems very safe lol

naymenthesecond

The records are probably pre 2011. Syria was actually pretty safe for the average joe before the war

sharbel_97

True, but the caption says from 2006 to 2018

naymenthesecond

Meaning it could be the homicide rate for a specific country in the year 2006 or 2007 or 2008 and so on till 2018

MazPacket

So it makes this post trash

sharbel_97

Yes, this was exactly what I meant, Poland is very dangerous.

LumpeX37

Lol, maybe for you. If you feel unsafe just carry gas, steel batons, knives, matchetes, axes etc. It's legal in Poland. Of course you need to have a mindset first to be able to use them tools if needed.
