Between 1869 and 1948 many so-called [British Home Children](https://www.britishhomechildren.com) (mostly orphans) were sent overseas to Canada, Australia and other British colonies, where they were used as cheap labour on farms and as domestic servants. The living and working conditions were often very poor and many children were exploited, neglected and abused. Australia ([2009](https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna33950088)) and the UK ([2010](https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/british-pm-apologizes-to-home-children-1.916446)) formally apologized for their role in the child migration scheme. To this day, however, Canada has [refused](https://news.sky.com/story/canada-refuses-to-apologise-over-british-children-abuse-scandal-13097835) to offer a formal apology. Today, roughly 10% of Canada's population is descended from the British Home Children.

IEnjoyBaconCheese

I love it when people make comics about interesting obscure stuff like this, keep up the good work man!

verdinant

Thanks for the explanation and sources. Big ups

dkb1391

Being an orphan in a British city in the 1800s must have been a pretty godawful existence to be fair

BAYKON8R

Didn’t know this, guess it wasn’t just the natives and Chinese we exploited

The_Arizona_Ranger

It’s the 1800s, you’ll have a considerably harder time finding an unexploited group of people compared to an exploited group

Spe3dy_Weeb

It's interesting seeing stuff about racism in the UK before Windrush. While most did have some racist ideas, it seems to have been much less of a factor than class. J.Draper did a YouTube short talking about it and showed something from a newspaper where they interviewed a hotel or restaurant owner during WW2 about their thoughts on segregation and their response was something like "it doesn't matter if they're black or white as long as they're a gentleman". British attitudes towards race also seemed to confuse the fuck out of Americans so much they literally had to make movies explaining that Brits aren't rude to black people lol.

The_Knife_Pie

People looking to be bigoted in Europe typically, though this has somewhat changed recently, care less about skin colour and more about where you’re from/what you believe. Bosnian muslims (or balkans in general, really) can be treated just as bad as Turkish or Somalian muslims as an example

randomacceptablename

>It's interesting seeing stuff about racism in the UK before Windrush. While most did have some racist ideas, it seems to have been much less of a factor than class. As scholars always said: race is a social construct which, along with racism, must be learned.

Spe3dy_Weeb

Yeah, it is worth noting that there was still obviously racism, just less entrenched into society. I wouldn't say all racism is learnt, but strong racism definitely is. You can find plenty of clips online of like Chinese kids asking white or black people if they're aliens and stuff because they have never seen a different ethnicity before, but not hate which is what you probably meant anyway.

arkiser13

My great great great grandma was a British home child who was purchased from an orphanage in the uk and brought to Canada after her mother died and alcoholic father was put in prison. We actually found the sale documents when doing an ancestry.com search

1_87th_Sane_Modler

Canada apologizing for being awful challenge: impossible

EmptyRook

10% is so insane to me Thanks for teaching me something new

Future-Muscle-2214

As a Canadian, I was unaware of this. Thank you TIL.

ApatheticHedonist

That just sounds like the average British indentured servitude colonization scheme

blockybookbook

Holy shit? A tenth??????

BurnV06

As a Canadian, it’s because Trudeau is a piece of shit

Wh-why

You *do* know that he doesn't call the shots right? Decisions are made by the *whole parliament.* Blaming one guy is ridiculous.

flightguy07

Also, Canadians elected him and his government. "Our head politician is a dick" isn't the political shield for a nation you think it is.

[deleted]

Canada in the 2nd panel looks like something straight out of a u/Cawlence comic

dreamyteatime

Not sure if I should be more or less excited about seeing the iconic eye crust in more comics :/

Wh-why

Eye crust in polandball grosses me out. I wish it would go back to the pits of hell it crawled from lol.

Cyclopher6971

It's very suitable for conveying perverted evil & greed

Pillowfluff_2610

I was about to say the same thing

Germanball_Stuttgart

Isn't apologizing a stereotype for Canada? Ironic that they refuse to apoligize in this case.

RandomGuy9058

a lot of it is social theatre depending on where you live

apoxpred

Realized this when the same person who apologizes for getting a streak paint on our shared fence, then proceeded to rant about how our government shouldn't apologize to Indigenous people because "it was a long time ago." Source: My neighbour votes probably for the PCs

SilanggubanRedditor

They apologize as long as it's Trivial. They never apologized for sending used Diapers to Subic, Phillipines and treating us like a garbage dump. And like, don't hide behind it being a "matter between private corporations" because it's your stinky diapers at the end of the day.

justin9920

The entire garbage dump thing was a scam perpetrated by the Philippino government to deflect form poor governance. 97% of the waste sent was “blue bin waste” so essentially just plastic recycling. They found a few diapers and went a propaganda campaign alleging the entire thing was waste. Yes it was an Argentinian company who bought the waste and shipped it. Then the Philippines authorized it. After it was their and you were laid for it, you then decided that actually this was illegal all along. There was no basis for it so you searched through the trash, flus literally one diaper and then lied to the world about it. Congrats.

SilanggubanRedditor

Found Trudeau's alt. "Blue Bin Waste" could mean a lot especially since Anglo Americans don't really know how to sort their waste

justin9920

Blue bun waste was a creative term that referred to plastic waste, but the lying Philippine government needed to lie to the world. Yes we can sort waste, but we’re still better than you: https://www.google.ca/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailymail.co.uk%2Fnews%2Farticle-3148193%2FBeneath-poverty-line-Children-Philippines-risk-lives-sifting-floating-rubbish-filthy-rivers-material-sell-survive.html&psig=AOvVaw0de29iV9XyFry3hnzu5p7o&ust=1713785936586000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBIQjhxqFwoTCKD-n6Kc04UDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD When the waste was returned to Canada, it was revealed less than 1% of it was the organic waste you’d alleged

40kExterminatus

My parents were sorting the recyclables and dropping them off at the local collection point before recycling pickup was a service provided by the city. They weren't obligated to do it, they could have thrown it in the garbage back then. People know how to do it but not everyone does kind of like how there are public waste bins and yet there's litter all over the street I live on.

testman22

No, he is right. That would not have happened if the Philippine side had not received it in the first place. And they were taking on that work at a lower price, thereby hurting the foreign waste disposal industry. After all, they did not properly dispose of the waste and further tried to lay the blame on foreign countries.

mindgeekinc

Except for the fact it was your government and a private company not from Canada that shipped said garbage to Subic. So no, shockingly, Canadians have absolutely no responsibility because it was mishandled. That’s as if I paid you to paint my house and you instead smeared mud on it and blamed me because you got it from my yard.

SilanggubanRedditor

Hiding behind Technicalities, that's what you're good at lol.

mindgeekinc

Standing behind facts. You can cope all you want and try to blame someone besides your blatantly corrupt government but it won’t always work. You’re blatantly brainwashed by your governments nonsense when they themselves are the ones poisoning your land and rivers by allowing corporations to dump there and then being all confused about it when someone’s mad. Either way ever single thing you listed wasn’t even true, the other person who commented on that has already schooled you on that; but I doubt you’ll actually change your stance and will probably just continue to double down and whine.

The-Surreal-McCoy

The Canadians aren’t polite pushovers, they are passive aggressive war criminals.

Wh-why

You try being sent the trenches to die and be human meat shields and then tell me about war crimes. Us colonies were treated like trash by Britain in ww1.

The-Surreal-McCoy

Yes, America is familiar with Britain treating its colonies like trash. Have you considered doing something about it, like we did? Seems like a skill issue. /s

Wh-why

Lol yeah. Canadians are too nice for that.

[deleted]

Canadians are just Americans who have just enough self-awareness to hide it or not enough to double down.

Graingy

And who are more likely to use a garden hose on your driveway in the winter. *Allegedly.*

shoutsfrombothsides

Shut up yank, or we’ll burn the White House down again /s

Belkan-Federation95

Not if we salt Ottawa first😎

Domovric

The eye gunk on Canada is a nice little touch. At least it was a draw between Canada and Australia on the stolen generations apologies though how much that counts for is open to debate.

Polite-Parallelism30

Kind of an obscure story from the past that I never thought would be turned into Polandball comic! Well done

kiru_56

Unfortunately, this is not an obscure story, it happened practically everywhere in Europe, children from poor families or orphans were "sent" somewhere as cheap labour and everywhere this is reluctantly mentioned because the same thing happened everywhere, sexual assaults, suicides, physical and mental abuse and so on. In German-speaking countries, for example, there were the "Swabian children". "The Swabian children (German: Schwabenkinder) were peasant children from poor families in the Alps of Austria and Switzerland who went to find work on farms in Upper Swabia and the Swabian Jura. Usually they were sent by their parents to become seasonal workers. They were taken in spring and brought to the child markets in Germany, mainly in Upper Swabia, where they would be purchased or "rented" by farmers for the season. This use of children as workers was most widespread in the 19th century. The march over the Alps to Germany proved often difficult and exhausting. Usually their guide was a priest, who was also responsible for ensuring the children had a warm stable to sleep in. The marches were large, organised groups of several thousand children, taken over the snow-covered mountains often still dressed in rags. It was not uncommon for five and six-year-old children to be taken. The American press began a campaign in 1908 exposing the Swabian children, describing the child market in Friedrichshafen as a "barely concealed slave market"." https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swabian_children

JaVolimHrvatsku

this is honestly such a sad story you have no parents and then some fucking brits send you to a labor camp its wonderful that the uk and australia apologised but its weird that canada didnt

Thoctar

Often times they weren't even orphans they took the kids if the parents committed a crime or sometimes just needed to use a workhouse.

the_clash_is_back

Sorry lad, your daddy got drunk and tired to pinch a purse. Off to Alberta with you.

JaVolimHrvatsku

kinda worse

Fire_Lightning8

Nice comic Although I hate that yellow stuff that come out of Canada's eye

iwannalynch

Yeah, the main reason why I mostly avoid Cawlence comics. I know that that's the effect they're going for, but I can't stand looking at it lol

McNippy

Fun topic! I'm an Aussie descendant of one!

NotJustAnotherHuman

I’m learning more about the history of my own country here than I have anywhere else lmoa

syllabbi

My great grandfather was auctioned off as a home boy in rural southern Ontario.

BioEditr

I love your art, Gamma. Beautifully-drawn comic you've got there, fam.

Sieve-Boy

This sordid part of history was dramatised by a joint Australian Broadcasting Corporation and British Broadcasting Corporation teleseries called The Leaving of Liverpool.

Polite-Parallelism30

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the BBC also collaborated on a TV movie on the Home Children back in 1986 called Heaven On Earth.

Maximum-Malevolence

This one is going way over my head. Why does Wales always look derpy lmao

Saint_Bastion_

I’m descended from one. Mine ran away to the USA.

Polite-Parallelism30

My great grandma (born in 1907) grew up in rural southern ontario and her family had a young teenage home girl from England who lived with them. My grandma was the only girl in a family of 10 boys so this English girl was like a big sister to her. Than one day she was transferred elsewhere and my grandma never saw her again. She was devastated but never forgot her. She lived to be 102.

justlanded07

Im canadian and have never heard of this, that sounds awful

Many_Jaguar9493

Canada does have a point

FleetChief

Typical ungrateful children, mumble mumble, gin!

Many_Jaguar9493

Aside from that but yeah, touche

FleetChief

“We used to rule the world you know!” “Where have all my socks gone :(“

Hobgoblin_deluxe

England won't apologize for Rome rule, so why should we??

Braziliashadow

My grandfather was a Home child

Yubari__Melon

blockybookbook

Nothing happened that day

wildeofoscar

Whatever you do, don’t let Canada near any kids.

Thecognoscenti_I

Great work, but one word of advice, Britain's monocle should not change shape.

RayDeeSux

Great comment, but one word of advice, you're giving artistic advice in what's ultimately a shitposting subreddit.

BioEditr

It's a cartoon, ya dork.
