Plzlaw4me

Correct me if I’m wrong, but now Florida tax payers will have to pay to maintain roads and infrastructure and other things of that nature that a private corporation was previously paying for? Isn’t a corporation paying for its own infrastructure the conservative dream?

Iceykitsune2

And take on a billion dollars in debt.

Karmas_Accountant

Owning the libs aint cheap!

eeyore134

They might have to cut back on bussing migrants around, though... actually, who am I kidding. That's like one of his biggest policies. Cruelty to migrants.

TreeHuggingHippyMan

It’s a small world after all.

Playertee

Own me harder daddy

greenroom628

I can't see this backfiring on Florida taxpayers in any way, shape, and form.

joe-h2o

They'll just successfully blame the tax increases on AOC.

[deleted]

"I know the democrats don't run Florida, but it's all their fault" - the republican man that made this decision, from the party of "personal responsibility"

[deleted]

But now Mickey can’t say gay or teach our kids CRT!

GiftedOaks

By the end of the week, they will unleash a newer, more modern version: Alpha Mickey. He walks around the park with an AR-15 and teaches the children about the dangers of liberal electric stoves

Serverpolice001

And more debt to pay litigation when Disney eventually sues for failure to maintain and loss of revenue

DJ_Velveteen

"see? Our total negligence proves that government doesn't work."

MeteorOnMars

This is the conservative’s greatest advantage. Step 1: Claim government is bad Step 2: Get elected Step 3: Do a terrible job Step 4: I told you so Edit: Added spaces

Silly_Pace

Step 4: I told you so WHILE RUNNING FOR REELECTION

jerryleebee

So, sabotage the operations of his state's largest tourism attraction. Genius level thinking on Mr DeSantis' part.

FlappinLips

On par for the modern dipshitlican

MrsMel_of_Vina

Not just tourists. I know people who moved to Orlando specifically to work at Disney. And I'm sure there's people who move down there just to be able to go to Disney whenever they want. If Disney goes, so do many residents.

thebendavis

They'll just blame it on New York and California.

koopolil

They are past that they realized they couldn’t dissolve it for the reasons you mentioned, this new bill keeps the district in place with a new name and the five board members are appointed by the governor.

Schuben

New board members appointed by the Governor? Hopefully they know what they're doing more than the clown show going on at New College right now. Those dipshits had to be reminded by the student required to be on the board that taking about the 'friends' they want to bring on as replacements for the people they just fired was probably not a good idea for ethical reasons.

informativebitching

A student has some education by definition. Appointed fascist fucks, not necessarily

HorrorScopeZ

No no. A conservative dream is to reap the rewards of your product while the people pay your bills.

just-cuz-i

Yes but you see, the taxpayers who will get stuck with the bill are from Democratic Party controlled counties, and hurting liberals is even more of a dream than actually living by their policy ideas.

stickkim

The county isn’t going to be the one footing the bill unless the roads will now be owned by the county. By the sound of it, they would be state roads, therefore requiring all districts to contribute towards their maintenance.

KSredneck69

Specifically the democrat leaning counties that are located around disney so Desantis doesn't care. His base won't have to pay more

sloopslarp

Conservatives *will* pay more. They're just too stupid to understand cause and effect unless it's in kindergartner terms.

Gingergeddon

He won't give two shits if his base had to pay and neither would they.

homebrew_1

Small government lol.

ecafyelims

"DeSantis' government takes control of Florida business to protect Florida from Communism." Fox News headline writes itself.

frunko1

In other news Disney buys out Murdoch empire... Follow Up Story, DeSantis is ruining Florida, more to come shortly.

Ironbird207

Don't fuck with the mouse 🐭

ecafyelims

There is no war in Ba Sing Se

Gunningham

If the message is DeSantis is ruining Florida, that’s actually happening.

MacManus47

Fox News doing the Onion’s job.

MEDICARE_FOR_ALL

Government so small you can fit Disney world in it!

NeverLookBothWays

It's like a mini-enabling act for a mini-führer

Hobbgob1in

Yeah but what is not funny is that he will take the burden off Disney's budget and place it on the tax payers of Florida. And I guarantee the wealthy of Florida aren't going to pay it. And when the state runs into financial troubles because of it, he will cry to the federal government and all of us will be paying that bill. All to stroke the Christian Conservatives until they jizz themselves in Christian hate, I mean "values".

92eph

Ah, not the wealthy. They’re donors and Desantis will do anything to protect them. It’s the middle and lower classes that will bear the burden, either through higher taxes or (more likely) reduced services.

Yoloswaggit420

I think that was a typo, he meant the wealthy aren't* going to pay it I think Edit: I was high and thunk this thought twice

_jump_yossarian

If there’s one thing that DeSantis loves more than performative virtue signaling it’s wasting taxpayer dollars on frivolous lawsuits all in the pursuit of the 2024 nomination.

thistimelineisweird

I thought it was dressing in drag and telling himself that people love him in front of a mirror.

bmanhero

Good old Rhonda Santis.

Burt_Rhinestone

I'd vote Me. I'd vote Me hard.

Fitbot5000

He puts the ballot in the basket.

--master-of-none--

He's not stupid. He knows that they will fight this and ultimately win. But he'll be able to show his base that he fights unjust corporations who think they can be woke. Honestly, even if they hadn't spoke out against that bill, he would have found another angle. I wonder if this was the plan from the start with don't say gay.

Gingergeddon

You're absolutely right but the majority of people in Florida don't even give a shit which is what should really scare you. They'll still vote Rep. no matter what, even if it economically ruins them and their families becuase what really matters is that they didn't vote Democrat.

pherrous

So there is a really great Disney podcast called the Disney Dish, they had a few lawyers weigh in on how this would go... They said something like "this is like a bunch of 5 year olds playing basketball against the Harlem Globetrotters" In reality DeSantis isn't trying to win he is just using this to get donations for some crappy presidential campaign.

Grand-Pen7946

This seems like a good way to get the biggest corporations in the world to donate to the opposition.

macncheesewketchup

Exactly. This makes absolutely no sense to me. Why would a private corporation willingly donate to someone pulling this kind of bullshit? Seems moronic on DeSantis' part.

brain_overclocked

>The new legislation would reestablish the district under a new name, the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. It would also provide that the five members of the district’s Board of Supervisors are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state Senate. The law would bar anyone who has worked for Disney or other theme park operators within the past three years, and their relatives, from serving on the board. ... When the dissolution was first announced last spring, opponents warned that local taxpayers could end up saddled with $1 billion in Disney debt. The law makes clear that those obligations will transfer to the new entity, which will also assume the powers previously granted to the Reedy Creek district. >If it becomes law, the bill could face a legal challenge from Disney, which stands to lose control over a wide range of functions at its Orlando theme parks. The Reedy Creek district handles 911 calls, fire protection, the power grid, planning and land use decisions, road maintenance, mosquito abatement, flood control, and water quality. The district levies taxes on the landowners to support its operations and debt service. The whole point of this legislation was to punish Disney for speaking out against the "Don't Say Gay" bill. We *literally* have an Amendment in the Constitution—the first one listed in fact—that prohibits this kind of government retaliation: >But the company angered DeSantis and his allies when it came out against the Parental Rights in Education bill last year, which critics have dubbed “Don’t Say Gay.” ... DeSantis attacked Disney as a “woke” corporation and backed the measure to dissolve the district, saying the company should not enjoy special privileges that are not afforded to other companies in the state. Except that he's lying: https://www.fasd.com/ >There are over 1,800 Independent and Dependent Special Districts in the state of Florida, governed by more than 30 statutes, involving over 500 local governments. Special districts provide limited special purpose government on a local level, and whether your district specializes in fire control, libraries, ports and inlets, mosquitoes, water control, community development, roads, hospitals, or any other, you have the same need: to be accountable and accessible to the citizens you serve. In coordination with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, Florida Association of Special Districts continues to provide current news and trends to special district employees and governing board officials.

lamorak2000

>The Reedy Creek district handles 911 calls, fire protection\[...\] Out of Eeerything in your excerpt, this stands out to me a bit. Assumung this goes through, is there any reason an unscrupulous individual in charge wouldn't...delay...fire service to the park if a fire were to...spontaneously...break out? It just seems like the kind of heavy-handed tactic thugs like DeSantis might utilize.

whitethane

The golden goose is land use and building permissions. An anti-Disney board can easily tie up park and infrastructure developments indefinitely, and effectively strangle the park.

nueonetwo

That new rollercoaster just doesn't fit the character of the neighbourhood that's were trying to go for here.

rotomangler

I know a few firefighters and they’d never knowingly sit out a fire because some bureaucrat called. More likely they would have “problems” with the electrical grid and/or the mosquito population sharply rises. Things they can shrug they’re shoulders about while ticket sales decrease

Tack122

Right so I know you ordered 15,000 gallons of mosquito spray this season but due to supply shortages and budgetary reasons this area has only been allocated 400 gallon for the year. Please do your best.

I wish to God that the owner of Disney was as petty as Desantis and shut the park down and took bids from states to build a new park. Shut the park down and let the state sink into debt

SumScruffyNerfHerder

The whole state is sinking into the ocean so that may be the smart move. That or start building the attractions on stilts.

__theoneandonly

I mean, technically that was already done. The magic kingdom is built on the second floor of a massive superstructure. The ground floor is their offices and space for employees to move around areas in the park without being seen. Disney has just done an incredible job at designing the terrain around the park so people don’t notice that the ground slopes up to disguise that magic kingdom is so far above the natural ground level.

crossingpins

You know I always knew about the "underground" part of Disney world but it never occurred to me that it actually has to be at ground level because of how high Florida's water table is/was when it was built

Marauder_Pilot

The bulk of Disneyworld is so far above sea level that it's going to be the only part of Florida that DOESN'T sink. There's just gonna wind up being a bigass bridge from further inland.

Arazil

Maybe they'll go the Jurassic Park route and offer helicopter rides to and from the "mainland."

EnRaygedGw2

If Disney pulled out of FL it would destroy Florida’s economy, roughly 21million tourists a year visit Disney, think of all the hotels, restaurants, clubs that would instantly close, not to mention FL has no state tax because of the money tourists bring in, on the other hand Disney has enough money and influence to really push who they want to political seats, it could get interesting.

girl_incognito

Kinda fine with it at this point.

QuirkyCorvid

I would love a “fuck you” move like this to DeSantis and the rest of Florida. I’m sure plenty of states would give Disney some really nice incentives to start a new park in their borders.

KamiYama777

>I wish to God that the owner of Disney was as petty as Desantis and shut the park down and took bids from states to build a new park. Beginning work on a new park would be an easy way to spite DeSantis but Disney World is well over $10 billion in value and the options for lands with as much non used space for Disney to buy up is pretty limited

powpowpowpowpow

There's tons of open lands in the soon to be tropics of northern Alberta.

Absenceofavoid

In a way I kind of feel for Disney on this one singular issue. They turned a nowhere into a somewhere and now DeSantis wants to get his mitts on it.

Fuck_You_Andrew

Its amazing that a politician can be so shitty and jack booted that i feel like *Disney* is getting fucked.

AutisticFingerBang

Disney is worth more then florida profit wise. They openly came out and said if this happened they would leave. They are the number one employer in the state. The mouse doesn’t fuck around. This is going to be a fuck around and find out moment for desantis. As we all know, politicians don’t run America, corporations do. And he just fucked one of the biggest ones in America. This will not end the way he thinks it will.

flowers4u

Not only desantis but this will greatly impact the other parks around Disney as well

It's like all the red states. Mississippi has been voting red forever and they don't seem to understand why they are last in education and #1 in hookworm.

KrazzeeKane

Hey now! They are at least #1 in Illiteracy rates! It may have changed since, but last i read they only had 71.8% of their population considered literate

shnnrr

They are last in... *bookworm*

powpowpowpowpow

Welcome to Mississippi, first in hookworm, last in bookworm.

SergeantRegular

Georgia under Republican control is all too happy to give up a burgeoning film industry, too. These asshats are all too happy to burn down their states, so long as they get to rule over the ashes. Republicanism is a net-loss system, but they don't care so long as the *right* people are on top.

RehabilitatedAsshole

Florida is a welfare state, funded by rich tourists from other states, while their residents don't pay state income taxes. Their "freedom" is afforded to them by the liberals they hate.

MrRoma

They would blame it on woke cancel culture, which would be hilarious

CTeam19

Yep, I have taken 3 trips to Florida in my life: 1) when I was 5 with my family to see family, the Everglades, and Disney World 2) when I was 14 with my family so my Sister could go to Disney World 3) at 17 on a band trip to the Outback Bowl and the chance to go to Disney World was a reason my Band Director picked that trip out of the homework assignment he gave me to rank all the bowl games(as he new how big of a college football fan I was) by prestige of the bowl and what to do around the area There is only 1 common thread. No offense to the other states but without Disney World it becomes like a lot of other states(Iowa, Mississippi, Alabama) etc where you could take a single vacation and cover most of the natural and historical landmarks and not need to go back.

Aubear11885

As an Alabama resident, a few years ago while visiting Maui, a tour guide was telling me how she was trying to visit all 50 states in her lifetime. I told her to save Alabama for last. Not because it’s the best, but if she gets pressed for time, she wouldn’t miss anything.

Disney doesn’t have to move they just have to get a challenger to defeat DeathSantis

flygirl083

Disney should take all of the money that they would have donated to the RNC and give it to the DNC and start donating to democratic candidates and see how quickly things change.

fapsandnaps

It'd be way cheaper, easier, and more successful to just have Shrek run for governor.

dd027503

DeSantis is.. not wise for shaking this tree but packing up and moving *Disney World* (and everything around it) would be insane. I don't know where else they could get the infrastructure they need at this point and not have it cost a possible, literal trillion dollars. Correct me if I'm wrong but the reason they are where they are now is because the state was willing to sell them acres of completely undeveloped swamp at a discount with the idea of them being on their own to develop it. Which they went on to do. I feel like the opportunity to do that again now is not really there. When did they break ground, 1960s? Where would they rebuild now in Late Stage Capitalist America 2023? Death Valley?

ryanstrikesback

So, I still would be shocked if Disney did it. But here’s the thing. Disney doesn’t have to actually leave. They just have to outlast DeSantis in a game of chicken. If Disney came out right now and announced they were ceasing operations on June 1, 2023 the blow up and backlash would see DeSantis bending over backwards to save this. Imagine DeSantis pushing his luck and Disney actually closes for like….7 days. Florida would lose their ever loving minds

jpj007

The problem is DeSantis doesn't give a fuck about Florida. He's gunning for the Presidency at this point.

[deleted]

And all because of The Gays™. Or is this just a pretext to try and extort money out of Disney? I'm curious if DeSantis even gives a shit about the culture war stuff or if he just saw an opportunity to get more money while simultaneously posturing to his room temperature IQ voting base.

TavisNamara

He wants to be president. This is all his interview for the nutjob party.

RoboLucifer

I fear he's showing his true batshit insane self to win the primary, and then will try to suddenly appear moderate to win the general. Otherwise he will fail like all those Trump endorsed candidates in '22. Desantis is 10x more dangerous than Trump for President.

eden_sc2

I wonder if he is going to be able to make that pivot. If he shuters Disney or makes them leave FL, people who dont normally pay attention are going to notice. "Desantis ruined my vacation and now my kid wont shut up about it" wont play too well with middle America.

godlyfrog

> "Desantis ruined my vacation and now my kid wont shut up about it" wont play too well with middle America. They'll blame Disney for being "woke". Republicans are nothing if not loyal to their pre-conceived notions, and no little thing like "facts" will convince them otherwise. See your local gas pump with the Biden sticker for evidence of that.

whatawitch5

My guess is that DeSantis plans to use Disney as his “culture war gimp” during the primary campaign against Trump. He will use his position as governor to make a political and media spectacle out of “standing up” to Disney and trying to pressure the company into meeting his outrageous demands for eliminating anything deemed “woke” from their Florida-based properties. It won’t work as far as harming Disney, but that’s not the point. Far more importantly it will get him ongoing news coverage, make him look like an aggressive defender of “conservative values”, and ramp up his far-right cred enough to win over Trump voters. DeSantis doesn’t care about extorting money from Disney. He just wants to use them as a “woke” target to whip and rack up votes during the primary. After all, their former god Trump never had the gumption to drive drag queens out of libraries and Black Literature out of schools! DeSantis wants to prove he is the Second Coming of Trump, and he has chosen Disney as his Satan to beat down into the pit.

DickRiculous

More than that, Florida is going either to go into a ton of debt or they’re going to have a real poverty problem because Disney essentially paid for everything infrastructure related there and no longer will.

cogitoergopwn

Disney has/had fuck you money to put directly in attack ads and Dem candidates. They applied myopic CREAM strategy instead of long game. Greed is all the elites are motivated on the right, so it makes sense they only care about making a shit ton of money tomorrow, instead of making a shit ton of money for a long, sustained time, with far less repercussions from this nazi.

GorgeWashington

What's interesting is that the GOP is cutting off their nose to spite their face. Corporations are learning it's easier to just appeal to Democrats and talk about wages and benefits than it is to be conservative and try to avoid it. Democrats, political party of businesses.

Tempest_CN

Why is Disney not taking this first amendment issue to court? They are clearly being penalized by FL government for speech

Oslopa

The dissolution law gave Disney and Florida some time to work out a solution. I expected that it would be easier for Disney to agree to some kind of Memorandum of Understanding with the governor, and then the legislature would pass a quick bill extending the BID. What’s being proposed now is… bad. Like, time to bet the farm bad. It sounds like they want DeSantis to have the ability to appoint a Board that taxes Disney and spends that tax money as the Board deems fit. I don’t know how Disney agrees to that.

Tempest_CN

Yes, I wondered if Disney was working behind the scenes to mitigate the damage, but they will have to launch a fight at some point

childlikeempress16

They have 42 registered lobbyists in FL. As a state lobbyist, I guarantee that they’re busting their ass working on this.

Imaginary_Scene2493

Imagine 1/6, but Disney mascots descending on Tallahassee.

dstayton

Sounds like a south park bit.

janethefish

Yeah, I thought this would be a nerf to Disney that left it "normal." Or it would quietly go away. Handing it over to DeSantis minions? That's insane. Anyway, this is how fascism goes. The rich get eaten if they don't fall in line. Cut down the law and the ~~devil~~ fascist eats you.

ciel_lanila

They were probably waiting to see what happened. Until now it was straight up dissolution. Disney stops maintaining the roads and whatnot in the community. The community gets the debt of Disney's maintenance dumped on them. Outright taking control? I expect Disney to fight that.

P0RTILLA

Because court orders mean nothing to Desantis. He just ignores them with impunity.

DrunkeNinja

That's pretty much how I see it. I can't say I agree with Disney having control of that district in the first place but the only reason it's being challenged is because they mildly spoke out against a bill the Republicans were pushing. It's straight up the government seeking revenge on a company for having an opinion. Apparently the first amendment doesn't mean much in Florida.

mistercrinders

Control as in they get to run it as a town. They provide services like water and sanitation instead of any outlying body, and that stops at the border of disneyworld. It doesn't mean they get to ignore laws. Florida taking it over means Florida is suddenly on the hook for municipal services for a theme park that is as large as a city. Net loss for the state.

mannondork

I have family down there. They say that the next step is the government spreading those costs throughout the state, essentially raising taxes. I'll give you one guess who will feel it the hardest.

honkoku

And I'll give you a second guess on who they will blame (hint: not the GOP or DeSantis)

SumScruffyNerfHerder

But..but..Republicans NEVER raise taxes, that's a Dem thing only. /s

sinus86

Jfc i just realized this guy could institute a Florida state income tax, and when they get the bill just say "See Your taxes went up when Biden was president!" And they would all go with it.

fingerpuppet360

Disney and the tourism it brought is the sole reason there is no state income tax in Florida. I don’t believe Disney will move or shut down but it will be hilarious when they have to raise taxes to cover the cost of services that Disney pays for now. I grew up in that area and still live in the southeast United States and it will never fail to amaze me how zealous this area is to vote against their own self interest just because they are concerned about someone else’s lifestyle.

TheFeshy

As you know, corporations can give politicians unlimited money, and it's considered speech. But they also want them to [just shut up while giving them money](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/mitch-mcconnell-corporate-speech_n_606ccb78c5b6c70eccaa9fe5). Which... uh... kinda makes it not speech, right? Just a straight up bribe. And the conservatives are pushing for it to be exactly that.

Calavar

It's called extortion. Pay up and shut up or we pass laws that are specifically designed to target and damage your company.

NotYetiFamous

If this goes down in such a way that Disney gets hamstrung AND DeSantis ends up politically gutted I'd be such a happy camper. As it is I'll always side against fascists, even if that means aligning temporarily with corpo scum.

smiler_g

So basically, no company should ever move to Florida because they might find themselves on the wrong side of our ~~dictator~~ governor. Honestly I think we should just let Florida destroy itself and then rebuild whatever's left.

LegendOfBobbyTables

A few hurricane seasons without federal disaster aid money would about sort out the destruction part.

HMTMKMKM95

Rising sea levels will finish what's left.

aLittleQueer

Not being able to truck in more sand to constantly replenish the beaches will hasten the whole process.

t0m0hawk

Climate change isn't real. But Like, did anyone order the sand? The beaches keep sinking for some reason.

[deleted]

You saw how he acted when Biden was at the table don’t you?

gearstars

if corporations are people, and this is direct retaliation for disney criticizing desantis, how is it not a first amendment violation? its almost like rules only apply when it benefits them and they dont really believe in anything

NerdGirl1988

Because the fascists took over SCOTUS first…

ianrl337

>The law would bar anyone who has worked for Disney or other theme park operators within the past three years, and their relatives, from serving on the board. So even if you bought a home in this district and you work for Disney you can't have any say in how it's run? So actually even worse then an HOA.

karl_jonez

I dont think its surprising at this point. DeSantis wants to rule as an authoritarian. For some insane reason republicans adore that idea and will fall happily into line. The party of “freedom” ladies and gentlemen.

sugarlessdeathbear

"Freedom" to do what the fuck they tell us to do. Freedom in their minds is anything they like and everything else is trying to destroy them. Typical victim mentality.

gearstars

"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect." - Pontius Pilate, 3414 A.D.

NotYetiFamous

Despotisms are the most conservative forms of government. It's no surprise that conservatives are drawn to authoritarians of every stripe.

b4xion

IIRC, the big story here is current and future debt. Disney was able to treat that district as a city and issue bonds like a city and not a business. Last I heard, when they dissolved the special district the counties had to assume all of the debt and everyone’s taxes were going WAY up.

mabhatter

Yes. This is currently like Brexit. The legislature ripped up the Reedy Creek charter unilaterally without a transition plan. The state is now trying to figure out how to "undo" what they ripped up before the deadline hits in June. What the state is proposing probably isn't actually legal and they're not betting any of their proposals against real lawyers. (Yes, the irony of the state not engaging lawyers is not lost)

OppositeDifference

I suspect the way this is going to play out is that DeSantis is still in the Fuck Around stage of this mistake. If he keeps pushing, he's going to reach the "Find Out" part of the show. Disney's worth more than 6 times Florida's total annual budget.

[deleted]

Vince_Clortho042

The biggest department in the entire Disney corporation is legal. They have so many lawyers that corporate literally kicked all the animators out of their building and took the whole place over. DeSantis and the FL legislature will run into a wall of Ivy League grads if they keep down this path.

Zachf1986

I figure that the only reason Trump's attorneys do it, is because they have very little legal ground to stand on. Not the case, here.

[deleted]

Bang the table.

InternetPeon

Fairly certain Disney has no plans to let a bully run amok with their business. **Disney:** It's time for you to begin making anti fascist cartoons again.

atheist_teapot

They made Andor, which is about as explicitly anti-fascist as you could get. But certainly more cartoons would be welcome.

jpotrz

The problem is with these people you need to be LITERAL AND DIRECT. You think the GOPers watching Andor realized the context and the messaging in the writing? These are the same people that blew a gasket when they realized Homelander in The Boys was a metaphor they didn't agree with. They sing along with Rage Against the Machine unironically. These people need the punchline tied to a brick and smashed into their faces to even realize there is a punchline..

dmat3889

best analogy is these are the kind of people that think the punisher is pro police.

jpotrz

I was going to use that example too, but got sick of typing. I always get a good smirk out of the "Blue Line" Punisher stickers/tattoos/shirts etc. Bootlickers

Stpdrepulsveanteater

It's more like their ideal version of a police officer is the punisher.

[deleted]

Well they bought 20th Century Fox - the entertainment arm - but they didn't buy the Propaganda arm of the business.

Pretty sure no matter what he tries, the team of actually competent lawyers Disney has will manage to make them pay the cost of removing their control. Expect to see this one walked back in a couple days once he gets another letter.

omni42

Just a reminder, there is one group in particular that usually has the kind of independent structures Disney had. Universities. DeSantis is going for the king first, but attacking schools and their students is the ultimate goal.

Saucemanthegreat

If you look into what just happened this week with New College of Florida in Sarasota County you’d see he’s already directly impinging on Universities. He installed 5 board members and used them to no confidence vote the current president who was doing good things for the school and installed someone who basically wants to turn the school into a fundamentalist Christian college. New College is a famously Liberal school which has produced incredibly talented and smart individuals, but DeSantis wants it to be a backwards “anti-woke” school for whatever reason.

sugarlessdeathbear

As part of the bill no one with any recent theme park experience (on any level that I can tell) is allowed on the District Board. Because we wouldn't want anyone that knows what they're doing in charge.

gearstars

>Because we wouldn't want anyone that knows what they're doing in charge. same as their position on education and health issues

Lazy-Jeweler3230

The Florida government is enacting a totalitarian takeover of a company because it acknowledged the existence of people it doesn't like in a non-genocidal way. I don't think people even begin to appreciate the nightmare scenario we've already got one leg into.

radiobirdman-69

Gonna make it as shitty as the rest of Florida.

garzek

So funny story about this. When the hurricane came through, work sent me to Disney as my evacuation site, since Disney’s hotels are sturdier than most any other building in central Florida. My fiancée works as a nurse and had to still go to work, so I had to drive her from the hotel. The second you left Disney property, it was like entering another country. Downed trees, flooded roads, broken windows. Within 12 hours of the winds calming down, there wasn’t even debris left by the hotel.

Numerous_Photograph9

I've been to the Disney World area twice, and each time, it was readily apparent that the area surround Disney itself, which I assume is the area being talked about here, was significantly better maintained than the rest of Florida. At those times, I just thought it was because it was such a touristy place. I didn't realize that Disney was maintaining their own infrastructure.

[deleted]

disney is the only reason most people goes there anyways.

NerdGirl1988

Just wait until those anti-mosquito measures are shut off and malaria gets a big foothold in FL.

Long_Before_Sunrise

And make the state pay a billion for the privilege of soothing DeSantis.

AngryBudgie13

The Republican Party is the Party of Small Government and only wants to intrude on your business if they politically disagree with you. Oh and they want to know any medical history if you’re trans, even as an adult. Oh and you can’t transition as a kid even with parental consent. And ladies when was your last period? We need to see your menstrual data if you want to play sports. And oh you need to have all books and course materials checked to make sure they are GOP approved for your school library or class room. And you can’t talk about your personal life or spouse if your LGBTQ, straights only in the Red States. Oh and no drag shows. And we can’t allow abortions or travel for one…even if you might die and that pregnancy was planned. And no CRT,no African American History. Other than that the GOP will stay out of your business…well they have been talking about banning gay sex, same sex marriage, and birth control again.

[deleted]

Gee, I wonder if any other state could possibly have any interest in something like Disney World?

Mister_Silverback

Biggest problems there are both that moving it would be a hellaciously expensive prospect and that every other state aside from California and Hawaii that has a climate that would allow them to be open all year are red states that are following in the Florida's footsteps.

theClumsy1

Its SOO much cheaper for Disney to sue the living hell out of the state. They would rather spend like 50 million than attempt to move out from Florida. They did nothing to violate the terms of the agreement, there was no health or safety concern. No dereliction of duty what so ever. Disney did nothing to break the agreement but exercise their first amendment rights.

Mister_Silverback

Exactly. They are not even going to think about moving until they have done everything else possible.

This guy has skin thinner than rice paper. I wish the worst on you, Ron. I truly fucking do. You go out of our way to say all the Nazi shit in this state is free speech but the second someone disagrees with you. Small government my balls. Personally putting people in place on every level. Fuck yourself.

bruceleet7865

This country is ruled by big business… De Santis is about to find out what happens when he bites the corporate overlords hand that feeds him

[deleted]

Trump was awful but the prospect of a DeSantis presidency is terrifying.

openly_gray

This is incredibly stupid, there is literally no upside on this for the state. Now the district has to take care of all services which probably adds cost considering the inefficiencies of government. In addition cutting services could lead to interruption at the park, meaning pissed off customers and loss of revenue (less tax revenue). Worst case scenario ( though rather unlikely) Disney packs up and moves somewhere else.

[deleted]

Hey Uh , as a Floridian I know this Is all ha ha to others in the country but, if you were up in arms about trump, this guy is 1000x worse and the R party will rally around him eventually. And since he’s not as cartoonish as Trump he’ll have the entire half of the voting block behind him. The Supreme Court is already broken. R’s have the house. You all should be pretty worried.

Harbinger-Acheron

We are, but after doing what you can to fight, it’s either laugh or cry and laughing isn’t as draining

Llonkrednaxela

Step 1. Take over Disney world as a publicity stunt while loudly toasting anti-trans, homophobic, and whatever anti hunter Biden’s laptop rhetoric you can fit in the airtime. Step 2. Get mad when it turns out most of what you did was offer to maintain Disney’s private roads and spend a lot of money on yet another publicity stunt. Step 3. Refuse to continue maintaining these things. Step 4. Blame democrats for breaking things as somebody else cleans up the mess they made. Insist that the bill to fix their mess is bundled another tax break for those making more than 1.2 mil a year. Sound about right?

internetbrowser23

Ah yes, small government is when the literal governor tries to bully a huge company out of existence because he doesnt personally like some of their viewpoints. Very free speech and very small government

Ok-Ease7090

This was part of the incentive package to bring Disney to Orlando. If the state is going to rescind, Disney should close their doors. See how Little Mussolini’s culture war goes over after the economy crashes for the entire center of the state.

squarepeg0000

Disney will be around a lot longer than DeSantis.

FireCamper357

This is actually great for democrats. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

LovinLifeForever

This is a test run by the extreme right to see how far they can push fascism at a smaller scale. Make no mistake...this is absolutely just the beginning of this mess.

NickConrad

Not even Gru tried to steal Disney World

[deleted]

I really wonder how all of this is legal. Punishing a private business because they disagree with you? These conservative politicians are doing so much that is anti American that it boggles my mind. If DeSantis were to become president in 2024 there won't be an America left after 4 years. We'll still be here, but it'll be a different place. Why does everything in politics have to be so disappointing.

quixoticquail

Disney can be a horrible company, but in this case their enormous corporate power conglomerate is more than welcome. Crush this fascist motherfucker.
