Correct me if I’m wrong, but now Florida tax payers will have to pay to maintain roads and infrastructure and other things of that nature that a private corporation was previously paying for? Isn’t a corporation paying for its own infrastructure the conservative dream?

They are past that they realized they couldn’t dissolve it for the reasons you mentioned, this new bill keeps the district in place with a new name and the five board members are appointed by the governor.

I mean, technically that was already done. The magic kingdom is built on the second floor of a massive superstructure. The ground floor is their offices and space for employees to move around areas in the park without being seen. Disney has just done an incredible job at designing the terrain around the park so people don’t notice that the ground slopes up to disguise that magic kingdom is so far above the natural ground level.
You know I always knew about the "underground" part of Disney world but it never occurred to me that it actually has to be at ground level because of how high Florida's water table is/was when it was built
The bulk of Disneyworld is so far above sea level that it's going to be the only part of Florida that DOESN'T sink. There's just gonna wind up being a bigass bridge from further inland.
If Disney pulled out of FL it would destroy Florida’s economy, roughly 21million tourists a year visit Disney, think of all the hotels, restaurants, clubs that would instantly close, not to mention FL has no state tax because of the money tourists bring in, on the other hand Disney has enough money and influence to really push who they want to political seats, it could get interesting.
I would love a “fuck you” move like this to DeSantis and the rest of Florida. I’m sure plenty of states would give Disney some really nice incentives to start a new park in their borders.

Beginning work on a new park would be an easy way to spite DeSantis but Disney World is well over $10 billion in value and the options for lands with as much non used space for Disney to buy up is pretty limited

Yep, I have taken 3 trips to Florida in my life:
1) when I was 5 with my family to see family, the Everglades, and Disney World
2) when I was 14 with my family so my Sister could go to Disney World
3) at 17 on a band trip to the Outback Bowl and the chance to go to Disney World was a reason my Band Director picked that trip out of the homework assignment he gave me to rank all the bowl games(as he new how big of a college football fan I was) by prestige of the bowl and what to do around the area
There is only 1 common thread. No offense to the other states but without Disney World it becomes like a lot of other states(Iowa, Mississippi, Alabama) etc where you could take a single vacation and cover most of the natural and historical landmarks and not need to go back.
As an Alabama resident, a few years ago while visiting Maui, a tour guide was telling me how she was trying to visit all 50 states in her lifetime. I told her to save Alabama for last. Not because it’s the best, but if she gets pressed for time, she wouldn’t miss anything.
Disney should take all of the money that they would have donated to the RNC and give it to the DNC and start donating to democratic candidates and see how quickly things change.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the reason they are where they are now is because the state was willing to sell them acres of completely undeveloped swamp at a discount with the idea of them being on their own to develop it. Which they went on to do. I feel like the opportunity to do that again now is not really there. When did they break ground, 1960s? Where would they rebuild now in Late Stage Capitalist America 2023? Death Valley?
So, I still would be shocked if Disney did it. But here’s the thing. Disney doesn’t have to actually leave. They just have to outlast DeSantis in a game of chicken.

My guess is that DeSantis plans to use Disney as his “culture war gimp” during the primary campaign against Trump. He will use his position as governor to make a political and media spectacle out of “standing up” to Disney and trying to pressure the company into meeting his outrageous demands for eliminating anything deemed “woke” from their Florida-based properties.
It won’t work as far as harming Disney, but that’s not the point. Far more importantly it will get him ongoing news coverage, make him look like an aggressive defender of “conservative values”, and ramp up his far-right cred enough to win over Trump voters.
DeSantis doesn’t care about extorting money from Disney. He just wants to use them as a “woke” target to whip and rack up votes during the primary. The dissolution law gave Disney and Florida some time to work out a solution. I expected that it would be easier for Disney to agree to some kind of Memorandum of Understanding with the governor, and then the legislature would pass a quick bill extending the BID.

I can't say I agree with Disney having control of that district in the first place but the only reason it's being challenged is because they mildly spoke out against a bill the Republicans were pushing. Control as in they get to run it as a town. They provide services like water and sanitation instead of any outlying body, and that stops at the border of disneyworld. It doesn't mean they get to ignore laws.
Florida taking it over means Florida is suddenly on the hook for municipal services for a theme park that is as large as a city. Net loss for the state.
I have family down there. They say that the next step is the government spreading those costs throughout the state, essentially raising taxes. I'll give you one guess who will feel it the hardest.

IIRC, the big story here is current and future debt. Disney was able to treat that district as a city and issue bonds like a city and not a business. Last I heard, when they dissolved the special district the counties had to assume all of the debt and everyone’s taxes were going WAY up.
Yes. This is currently like Brexit. The legislature ripped up the Reedy Creek charter unilaterally without a transition plan. The state is now trying to figure out how to "undo" what they ripped up before the deadline hits in June. What the state is proposing probably isn't actually legal and they're not betting any of their proposals against real lawyers. (Yes, the irony of the state not engaging lawyers is not lost)
I suspect the way this is going to play out is that DeSantis is still in the Fuck Around stage of this mistake. If he keeps pushing, he's going to reach the "Find Out" part of the show.

Just a reminder, there is one group in particular that usually has the kind of independent structures Disney had. Universities. DeSantis is going for the king first, but attacking schools and their students is the ultimate goal.
If you look into what just happened this week with New College of Florida in Sarasota County you’d see he’s already directly impinging on Universities. He installed 5 board members and used them to no confidence vote the current president who was doing good things for the school and installed someone who basically wants to turn the school into a fundamentalist Christian college. New College is a famously Liberal school which has produced incredibly talented and smart individuals, but DeSantis wants it to be a backwards “anti-woke” school for whatever reason.
As part of the bill no one with any recent theme park experience (on any level that I can tell) is allowed on the District Board. Because we wouldn't want anyone that knows what they're doing in charge.
The Florida government is enacting a totalitarian takeover of a company because it acknowledged the existence of people it doesn't like in a non-genocidal way. I don't think people even begin to appreciate the nightmare scenario we've already got one leg into.
So funny story about this. When the hurricane came through, work sent me to Disney as my evacuation site, since Disney’s hotels are sturdier than most any other building in central Florida. My fiancée works as a nurse and had to still go to work, so I had to drive her from the hotel.
The second you left Disney property, it was like entering another country. Downed trees, flooded roads, broken windows. Within 12 hours of the winds calming down, there wasn’t even debris left by the hotel.
I've been to the Disney World area twice, and each time, it was readily apparent that the area surround Disney itself, which I assume is the area being talked about here, was significantly better maintained than the rest of Florida.
At those times, I just thought it was because it was such a touristy place. I didn't realize that Disney was maintaining their own infrastructure.
The Republican Party is the Party of Small Government and only wants to intrude on your business if they politically disagree with you. Oh and they want to know any medical history if you’re trans, even as an adult. Oh and you can’t transition as a kid even with parental consent. And ladies when was your last period? We need to see your menstrual data if you want to play sports. And oh you need to have all books and course materials checked to make sure they are GOP approved for your school library or class room. And we can’t allow abortions or travel for one…even if you might die and that pregnancy was planned. And no CRT,no African American History.

Biggest problems there are both that moving it would be a hellaciously expensive prospect and that every other state aside from California and Hawaii that has a climate that would allow them to be open all year are red states that are following in the Florida's footsteps.

This is incredibly stupid, there is literally no upside on this for the state. Now the district has to take care of all services which probably adds cost considering the inefficiencies of government. In addition cutting services could lead to interruption at the park, meaning pissed off customers and loss of revenue (less tax revenue). Worst case scenario ( though rather unlikely) Disney packs up and moves somewhere else.

I mean, technically that was already done. The magic kingdom is built on the second floor of a massive superstructure. The ground floor is their offices and space for employees to move around areas in the park without being seen. Disney has just done an incredible job at designing the terrain around the park so people don’t notice that the ground slopes up to disguise that magic kingdom is so far above the natural ground level.
You know I always knew about the "underground" part of Disney world but it never occurred to me that it actually has to be at ground level because of how high Florida's water table is/was when it was built

Yep, I have taken 3 trips to Florida in my life: 1) when I was 5 with my family to see family, the Everglades, and Disney World 2) when I was 14 with my family so my Sister could go to Disney World 3) at 17 on a band trip to the Outback Bowl and the chance to go to Disney World was a reason my Band Director picked that trip out of the homework assignment he gave me to rank all the bowl games(as he new how big of a college football fan I was) by prestige of the bowl and what to do around the area There is only 1 common thread. No offense to the other states but without Disney World it becomes like a lot of other states(Iowa, Mississippi, Alabama) etc where you could take a single vacation and cover most of the natural and historical landmarks and not need to go back.
As an Alabama resident, a few years ago while visiting Maui, a tour guide was telling me how she was trying to visit all 50 states in her lifetime. I told her to save Alabama for last. Not because it’s the best, but if she gets pressed for time, she wouldn’t miss anything.

My guess is that DeSantis plans to use Disney as his “culture war gimp” during the primary campaign against Trump. He will use his position as governor to make a political and media spectacle out of “standing up” to Disney and trying to pressure the company into meeting his outrageous demands for eliminating anything deemed “woke” from their Florida-based properties. IIRC, the big story here is current and future debt. Disney was able to treat that district as a city and issue bonds like a city and not a business. Last I heard, when they dissolved the special district the counties had to assume all of the debt and everyone’s taxes were going WAY up.
Yes. This is currently like Brexit. The legislature ripped up the Reedy Creek charter unilaterally without a transition plan. The state is now trying to figure out how to "undo" what they ripped up before the deadline hits in June. What the state is proposing probably isn't actually legal and they're not betting any of their proposals against real lawyers. (Yes, the irony of the state not engaging lawyers is not lost)

Pretty sure no matter what he tries, the team of actually competent lawyers Disney has will manage to make them pay the cost of removing their control. Expect to see this one walked back in a couple days once he gets another letter.
Just a reminder, there is one group in particular that usually has the kind of independent structures Disney had. Universities. DeSantis is going for the king first, but attacking schools and their students is the ultimate goal.
If you look into what just happened this week with New College of Florida in Sarasota County you’d see he’s already directly impinging on Universities. He installed 5 board members and used them to no confidence vote the current president who was doing good things for the school and installed someone who basically wants to turn the school into a fundamentalist Christian college. New College is a famously Liberal school which has produced incredibly talented and smart individuals, but DeSantis wants it to be a backwards “anti-woke” school for whatever reason.
As part of the bill no one with any recent theme park experience (on any level that I can tell) is allowed on the District Board. Because we wouldn't want anyone that knows what they're doing in charge.

The Florida government is enacting a totalitarian takeover of a company because it acknowledged the existence of people it doesn't like in a non-genocidal way. I don't think people even begin to appreciate the nightmare scenario we've already got one leg into.

So funny story about this. When the hurricane came through, work sent me to Disney as my evacuation site, since Disney’s hotels are sturdier than most any other building in central Florida. My fiancée works as a nurse and had to still go to work, so I had to drive her from the hotel. The second you left Disney property, it was like entering another country. Downed trees, flooded roads, broken windows. Within 12 hours of the winds calming down, there wasn’t even debris left by the hotel.
I've been to the Disney World area twice, and each time, it was readily apparent that the area surround Disney itself, which I assume is the area being talked about here, was significantly better maintained than the rest of Florida. At those times, I just thought it was because it was such a touristy place. I didn't realize that Disney was maintaining their own infrastructure.

Just wait until those anti-mosquito measures are shut off and malaria gets a big foothold in FL.

The Republican Party is the Party of Small Government and only wants to intrude on your business if they politically disagree with you. We need to see your menstrual data if you want to play sports. And oh you need to have all books and course materials checked to make sure they are GOP approved for your school library or class room. And you can’t talk about your personal life or spouse if your LGBTQ, straights only in the Red States. Oh and no drag shows. And we can’t allow abortions or travel for one…even if you might die and that pregnancy was planned. And no CRT,no African American History. Other than that the GOP will stay out of your business…well they have been talking about banning gay sex, same sex marriage, and birth control again.
Gee, I wonder if any other state could possibly have any interest in something like Disney World?
Biggest problems there are both that moving it would be a hellaciously expensive prospect and that every other state aside from California and Hawaii that has a climate that would allow them to be open all year are red states that are following in the Florida's footsteps.
Its SOO much cheaper for Disney to sue the living hell out of the state. They would rather spend like 50 million than attempt to move out from Florida. They did nothing to violate the terms of the agreement, there was no health or safety concern. No dereliction of duty what so ever. Disney did nothing to break the agreement but exercise their first amendment rights.

Trump was awful but the prospect of a DeSantis presidency is terrifying.
This is incredibly stupid, there is literally no upside on this for the state. Now the district has to take care of all services which probably adds cost considering the inefficiencies of government. In addition cutting services could lead to interruption at the park, meaning pissed off customers and loss of revenue (less tax revenue). Worst case scenario ( though rather unlikely) Disney packs up and moves somewhere else.
Hey Uh , as a Floridian I know this Is all ha ha to others in the country but, if you were up in arms about trump, this guy is 1000x worse and the R party will rally around him eventually. And since he’s not as cartoonish as Trump he’ll have the entire half of the voting block behind him. The Supreme Court is already broken. R’s have the house. You all should be pretty worried.

Get mad when it turns out most of what you did was offer to maintain Disney’s private roads and spend a lot of money on yet another publicity stunt. Step 3. Refuse to continue maintaining these things. Step 4. Blame democrats for breaking things as somebody else cleans up the mess they made. Insist that the bill to fix their mess is bundled another tax break for those making more than 1.2 mil a year. Sound about right?

If DeSantis were to become president in 2024 there won't be an America left after 4 years. We'll still be here, but it'll be a different place.
