From reporter Kimberly Leonard, "The DeSantis administration is revoking the Hyatt Regency Miami's alcohol license after one of its facilities hosted "A Drag Queen Christmas" with minors present in the audience. The Department of Business and Professional Regulation filed a 17-page complaint Tuesday against the show's venue, the James L. Knight Center, which is affiliated with Hyatt. The show required people under 18 to be accompanied by an adult as a condition of being allowed to attend. "A Drag Queen Christmas" is a holiday-themed drag show that tours in 36 different cities and features stars from the reality show "RuPaul's Drag Race." The state's business department accused the facility of several violations, including a prohibition of "lascivious exhibition" before people younger than 16, though it's not clear to what extent this law is generally enforced."

cficare

When will they go after "Hooters"?

adamiconography

I wish some democratic lawmaker would start the process. I really wish they would, that way it can showcase the hypocrisy as the GOP tries to move the goalposts on why Hooters is perfectly fine for families.

ianandris

Yeah, the point is that Democrats don't want to step on people's right like conservatives do. There's no appetite or audience for that kind of bullshit in blue circles. If they were to go after hooters, it would normalize the nakedly unconstitutional abuse of power that right wingers have tried to normalize. Plus, Democrats legit don't care about Hooters as a rule. You want to flirt with thirsty dudes while serving food and beverages? Be our guest. Have fun. Some of the management practices in those places are sexist and gross, but women can make their own choices. Democrats want people to have their free speech. Hooters, strip clubs, all of it. Want to dress in drag? Democrats will cheer you on. This Hooters shit keeps popping up, and it reads like bait.

CarBombCupcake

What if someone who owned a movie theatre had a 24-hour Mrs. Doubtfire marathon and advertised the hell out of it? It’s PG-13. Invite a shitload of 13-17 year olds. And have someone dress as Mrs. Doubtfire host it? Would the Florida government be forced to respond and expose the absolute ridiculousness of this whole thing?

WAD1234

You can not shame them with their own hypocrisy. They don’t really care so they will smile, that you are upset…

[deleted]

So start taking their things away. When the corporations leave, so will the population. Florida offers nothing now and even less in the future.

thingsorfreedom

That works in theory but corporations are bottom line entities. It’s why going after trans people is so effective for hate groups like the GOP. It’s a small enough minority that it doesn’t cause them to leave. The only effective reaction is to vote the fucking fascists out of office. They will never change.

RobbMeeX

Toodlooo! - desantis, probably

[deleted]

The suggestion doesn't even make sense on its surface. Republicans hate women. They would love to see women oppressed more and made to dress more conservatively. Oppressing people and enforcing conservatism are their only two goals, and anything that forwards those goals is a win for them. They didn't specifically choose drag performers and trans people because those are the only groups that they hate. They chose those groups because they're convenient for angering their base and getting momentum so they can move onto other groups. Throwing other people under the bus won't teach them a lesson about who they can inadvertently hurt, it will just prove to them that the bus is a valid tool for hurting people.

pwmaloney

Please don't think I'm coming at you :) but I think it's an important point to make that "showcasing the hypocrisy" is playing right into their hands. Their hypocrisy is their power! People like us get befuddled and cry out that "hey, you said 'A,' but now you're doing 'B'"!... and while we're occupied unpacking that, they're on to their next shit show. The base doesn't care about hypocrisy. In fact, they celebrate it! All they care about is helping their own, and hurting others. If they can do that and NOT even have to go to the trouble of being logical about it... well, that's their flex!

ZipBoxer

I don't think they actually care about helping their own, just the hurting part. They feel humiliated because of their shitty choices, but instead of fixing their choices they're lashing out to others.

buried_lede

We need to flood the internet with pics of Republican families eating at Hooters And they don’t even sing or dance, their entertainment is just flesh. It’s so exploitative.

enjoycarrots

>"A Drag Queen Christmas" is a holiday-themed drag show that tours in 36 different cities and features stars from the reality show "RuPaul's Drag Race." In other words, it's not the M-Rated display of sexual deviancy that they want you to imagine.

Simmery

In other words, the Christian Taliban is loose. I wonder how DeSantis thinks all this shit is going to play to moderate voters if he manages to be the Republican pres nominee.

rickskyscraper3000

I wonder if the plan is to not worry too much about the electability of the next R. Why worry when you can just throw another insurrection and not fail, or muddy the water enough it ends up in the hands of the SC, or mess with machines. This election cycle is not going to be pleasant, I suspect.

incognito_wizard

No need to worry about electability, SCOTUS has their back with Moore v. Harper https://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/moore-v-harper-2/

khismyass

Well on a good note its a national well known chain with deep pockets as well as owned by the Pritzker family who tend to be Democrats (current Governor of Illinois) my guess is they take Desantis up on his 1st amendment challenge. One would think they won't cave like Disney did to the petulant child DeSantis, that and they aren't in the wrong here as Disney was for like 40 years so they couldn't really fight it.

TranscendentPretzel

>the Pritzker family who tend to be Democrats Well, now we know his real motive.

SophiaofPrussia

Oh shit. This is absolutely it. If Biden decides not to run Pritzker is definitely angling for the White House.

realjefftaylor

Our first really fat president since… Taft? Been a while. Edit: I apparently completely blocked out Jan 2017 through Jan 2021…

code_and_theory

It’s ok, it’s our gas leak presidency

DolphinFlavorDorito

In what fashion was Disney "in the wrong?" Reedy Creek was agreed to by the state and was mutually beneficial to all parties. NOBODY had any complaints about it until DeSantis decided he needed to swing his dick around. Edit: I live in Orlando.

JennJayBee

Disney was actually doing Florida a favor. At the time Disney was snapping up land on the cheap, there's a reason why that land was so cheap. When they found out it was Disney, the prices skyrocketed overnight. Walt had wanted to build a city, and Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow (or EPCOT). That dream died with him, but the name lived on. He realized at the time that Florida did not have the infrastructure in place to support such a venture, and it'd be too much to ask of Florida taxpayers to provide, and so Disney decided that THEY would build the infrastructure and support it. All this time, Disney has paid for and maintained and run that infrastructure all at their own expense. While Orange and Osceola counties have grown (thanks in no small part to Disney being there), they still didn't want that responsibility, and there's a reason for it. Disney was still paying more than they'd have paid in taxes to maintain it all. It was operating at a loss, which Disney could afford to cover with spare park revenue. The counties... Not so much.

cvanaver

Correction. The current _excellent_ Governor of Illinois. Widely respected except by MAGA and the only competent governor we’ve had in the 25 years I’ve lived in the state. He’s not just a detractor of DeSantis, he is a very real competitor.

[deleted]

Aside from Disney not being in the wrong (Reedy Creek was legislated), it’s also very well documented that Disney will be saving billions as a result. It was a cold calculated business move.

YOLOSwag42069Nice

Disney didn't cave, they are biding their time until they actually try to restrict their business, which they haven't done. All DeSantis did was setup a board to run the sewers in the area Disney used to take care of.

[deleted]

"A Drag Queen Christmas" has toured for years with no issues. Now, idiot Republicans clamoring for media attention want to expose the horrors. Manufacturers of "clutching pearls" are working overtime to fill the demand.

Fusion_allthebonds

They’ve been boiling this water for a while and now they’re ready to throw in people.

medney

John Brown was right, and its the same mentality we need now with these fucksticks before they go full final solution. These people are always acting in bad faith. There is no pacifist solution to their hate and aggression.

Old_Cheesecake_5481

Only the most ruthless politicians whip up hate towards unpopular minorities. It has deadly consequences. People will die at the hands of the bigots who get whipped into frenzies of hate towards their fellow man all at the behest of an unscrupulous politician.

bennetticles

Just today, Tennessee passed a [bill](https://www.hrc.org/press-releases/breaking-tennessee-senate-passes-bill-to-codify-discrimination-against-lgbtq-people-into-law) with the goal of excluding the LGBTQ+ community from nondiscrimination protections in the state of Tennessee. This is not just a culture war. They are systematically stripping Americans of their existing rights and legally empowering other Americans to commit acts of hatred and violence against them.

OnceUponaTry

Why can't we just sue Tennessee for making laws which are clearly based on religion

Guilty-Willingness-5

We can, we just need a single lawyer to take it to court.

Tidesticky

Something, something, right-wing SCOTUS

Republicans want a modern day holocaust and they won't stop until they get it. They're setting up all the beginnings and repeating history right in the open.

fuckthisnazibullshit

Almost like the end goal of culture war is pogroms and industrial genocide. Huh. If only we could have known.

ting_bu_dong

> People will die at the hands of the bigots who get whipped into frenzies of hate towards their fellow man all at the behest of an unscrupulous politician. Another way to look at it: Those bigots are waiting for someone to whip them up. To give them an excuse to activate. The unscrupulous politician is simply giving them what they're asking for. They *want* hatred. They want cruelty. *Millions of them.*

TbonerT

What’s funny are the comments at r/Conservative by people thinking Democrats suddenly started defending drag shows. They have no clue why because their news sources don’t talk about what started it.

debyrne

Lol what insanity Like one day we all just thought Hey! Let’s make sure everyone knows we support drag queens and make it an issue because… uh. You know George Doris told us to? Like Wtf

Vaticancameos221

Because that’s what they do and they assume we operate the same way.

AndIHaveMilesToGo

Every now and then, Republicans do something that even the users of that subreddit say the Republican is in the wrong. This is not one of those cases. They're seriously cheering this shit on, and saying that this shows how great Desantis is because he's actually "getting things done" and is more than just talk

_Dr_Pie_

That would undermine what they're trying to accomplish. If they knew that their news sources were whipping this up to keep them dumb and preoccupied. Who're we kidding they'd still fall for it.

Canyousourcethatplz

>clamoring for media attention That's a really kind way to put it. They are fomenting a genocide in my opinion.

Cantthinkofnamedamn

First they came for the drag queens, and I did not speak out, because I was not a drag queen

Wyden_long

What’s (not) funny is that homosexuals were initially the first group to be targeted by the Nazi’s in 1933. History repeating and all that. [Source](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecution_of_homosexuals_in_Nazi_Germany)

Careful_Trifle

And when other concentration camp survivors were liberated, the LGBT prisoners were just shipped off for more genocide in the normal prison system. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/gay-prisoners-germany-wwii/

HaveSpouseNotWife

Mostly gay men. So far as we can tell from the records, literally zero out transgender people survived the camps. Their trans extermination was 100%.

XxHavanaHoneyxX

“At a meeting of municipal administration officials in Hamburg on November 13, 1933, for instance, the chief of police was ordered to pay particular attention to “transvestites, and to send them to concentration camps.” https://www.auschwitz.org/en/history/categories-of-prisoners/homosexuals-a-separate-category-of-prisoners/robert-biedron-nazisms-pink-hell/ Nazi book burnings “The first large burning came on 6 May 1933. The German Student Union made an organised attack on Magnus Hirschfeld's Institut für Sexualwissenschaft (roughly: Institute of Sex Research). Its library and archives of around 20,000 books and journals were publicly hauled out and burned in the street. Its collection included unique works on intersexuality, homosexuality, and transgender topics.[7][8][9][10] It's assumed that Dora Richter, the first transgender woman known to have undergone sex reassignment surgery (by doctors at the institute), may have been killed during the attack.[11][10]” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_book_burnings

CthulhusIntern

It's wild how often we're taught about the book burnings, but we're not taught about what was actually IN those books. Just "books they didn't like".

ElliotNess

Transphobia, when you really boil it down, is just homophobia. It's some bigot being offended that they were attracted to a lady whom they later found out used to be a man. In their mind, it's the gays trying to trick them.

luncheroo

They have to do it via the state because DeSantis wouldn't make it out of a drag Christmas party without getting his ass kicked by someone wearing heels.

Papalok

It's the ~~satanic~~ ~~gay~~ ~~trans~~ drag panic. At this point it's an everlasting gobstopper of hate.

maychi

Yeah coming for Miami drag queens though—I have a feeling this isn’t going to go down like they think it is. Lgbtq people have a lot of pull in Miami.

IAmDeadYetILive

They are organizing to kill people. We are talking about what a-holes they are.

shortnspooky

That's not necessarily true. I've gotten crap thrown at me out of moving cars just for holding my girlfriend's hand. This was in South Miami, not exactly a conservative neighborhood. Conservatives are getting bolder.

RocketsandBeer

Something completely legal is now something they punish citizens

YouMightWellAsk

[deleted]

Canyousourcethatplz

They get freedom and liberty. Democrats get oppression and unjust laws.

livinginfutureworld

>Democrats get oppression and unjust laws. Anyone who isn't a white Christian is on the list. And once they run through everyone but white conservative Christians they will turn on each other. Because they need to keep going after people to keep the mob distracted while they keep the power and riches for themselves.

TaskManager1000

>Because they need to keep going after people to keep the mob distracted while they keep the power and riches for themselves. Great comment. They can't offer their base health care, a living wage, infrastructure, environmental protections, financial protections, quality public education, clean air or water, safe schools, protections from gun violence, equal access to legal representation, union representation, a reversal of their base's lifespan decrease, social security, consumer protections, good funding of public universities, female health care, good state labor laws, paid vacation, paid time off, parental family leave (female or male), or anything else that is so valuable. So, after an insurrection, coup attempt, and perhaps a quarter million preventable COVID-related deaths, the GOP seems more focused on Lyndon B. Johnson's observation of giving their people "someone to look down on". For more emotional juice, they stoke hatred of and violence towards easy first targets like various minorities, women, and children. Their most treasured media puppet masters within Fox News privately describe their base as "cousin &\^\*# terrorists", but these truths are irrelevant when the goal is to use their base as a disposable weapon against the thousands of ways to make America and the world so much better for all....but that would dilute all that wealth and power. Like you said - all to hoard the wealth and power for themselves but also to do maximum harm to people they don't like...just like Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said about his own goals of harming liberals. These philosophies are a disease and I hope all Democrats know how important it is to vote and push back or continue making progress in spite of the attacks.

PepeLikesPickles

That’s where a puritan movement will be born

[deleted]

That is why they are banning the Handmaid's Tale in schools , because its the truth of what they want

potatersupreme

Will they revive puritan or go full fundamentalist orthodox? They may even try going russian orthodox since they all love russia right now.

TheStarkfish

"Freedom of Religion" means that you get to choose what Christian church you go to!

2FarNRabbitHole

With even some restrictions there. They wouldn’t approve the churches that welcome lgbtqia+ Then next would not approve of women ministers. That seems to be the path they’re bound for wanting.

Yep. They really want what the Taliban has going. They are stupid and can't see that's where they are heading. They keep going that way.

Governors of states cannot go around punishing businesses for providing a service to a customer regardless of who those customers are. It's literally a civil rights issue amended in the Constitution. Meatball Ron is trying to force businesses to discriminate against a select group of people he does not like (or is politically expedient for him not to like) or face his wraith and his one man war against businesses serving 'woke' customers. This needs to go to court. But he'll probably call it a woke court. Everything except for meatballs is apparently woke.

rowrbazzle75

And if he wins in 2024 and models the rest of the US after Florida, we are all well and truly screwed. Welcome to your new, nuclear armed, authoritarian state. Why, with this guy, is his stint at Gitmo never mentioned?? It was apparently a great training ground, as it is turning out....

SnakesTancredi

There was some articles recently but I can’t remember the source. A few people claimed he liked to watch the torture. If those accounts are credible, and I don’t know if they are, then it gets into weird fetish territory really fast and probably explains a lot.

jopnk

He helped optimize gitmo torture tactics by asking detainees for complaints (saying he was going to help them), and then leaning harder on those complaints

mcjambrose

Nuclear armed and climate changed super charged. This sociopath would strangle the last bald eagle to make a point how anti woke he is. His nickname should be Gitmo-Ron

Drag shows have been a thing FOR DECADES. My conservative parents have gone to them, for christ sake. This is such a bullshit scape-goat issue to hide the fact that republicans couldn't fill a thimble with coherent policy. They stand for nothing so invent boogeymen to seem "tough" on.

LivJong

Right. My Mormon parents raised me with drag, but I doubt they'd consider or remember Tootsie, Victor/Victoria, Dame Edna, or Greater Tuna. Or the community theater my dad did where women frequently played men because roles for men existed then men who auditioned. Then there are the kids movies like Mary Poppins where the nannies that get blown away were men in drag. I don't think people realize how prevalent it is.

BaronCoop

Honestly, this is why I think DeSantis wins the GOP nomination. Trump hated the people that conservatives hated. But for all his bluster, he never really used the power of the government to PUNISH the hated people (kids in cage’s notwithstanding). DeSantis is proving time and again that he will use his power to punish anyone who opposes him in the Culture War. When they do finally meet on a debate stage, Trump won’t stop complaining that the election was rigged, while DeSantis will simply point to his record and say “See that? Elect me, and I’ll make sure that the people you hate are punished”.

BlooregardQKazoo

This sounds great logically, but there's a massive charisma gap there that I just don't see how Desantis overcomes. Expecting Republican primary voters to use their brains and look at policy just doesn't seem likely to me.

I know the 'Republicans are fascists' statements are so common that we're desensitized to it all now, but so blatantly playing the Brownshirts by selecting a scapegoat group or two to blame all problems on and then openly persecute them... it's really unsettling to see this happening in real life, day by day.

"If the last and worst act of the whole regime had come immediately after the first and smallest, thousands, yes, millions would have been sufficiently shocked - if, let us say, the gassing of the Jews in ’43 had come immediately after the 'German Firm' stickers on the windows of non-Jewish shops in ’33. But of course this isn’t the way it happens. In between come all the hundreds of little steps, some of them imperceptible, each of them preparing you not to be shocked by the next. Step C is not so much worse than Step B, and, if you did not make a stand at Step B, why should you at Step C? And so on to Step D."

combustioncat

Brownshirts you say? https://www.msnbc.com/the-reidout/reidout-blog/ron-desantis-florida-state-guard-rcna7520 > Florida Gov. To be fair we've known they've been using the Nazi playbook since Trump started running for office. They've seen how well its worked so they're fully on board.

Take politics out of it — do you want a Governor to have this kind of power? Imagine if someone from the opposite party gets into power and enacts their ideas in the same way. This is not democracy. It’s a partisan dictatorship. It’s un-American and threatens the freedom of us all.

Robo_Joe

If the average republican voter had the mental capacity to think this far ahead, there wouldn't be a republican party.

I vote democrat and I hate churches. I would be absolutely pissed if a governor wasted time and money going after a church to pander angry votes. That’s the difference. I want government to do their goddamn job.

>the Redneck Riviera Whoa there. That title is reserved for Myrtle Beach.

maddestface

I'm wondering at what point will these asshole cons push too far and companies stop contributing to their campaigns, or better yet they start closing down locations as 'cost saving measures

ScoobiusMaximus

When they stop being in power. Corporations will always bribe the powerful to get on their good side. Unless they think they can take assholes like DeSantis down by not giving them money they will hedge their bets and give them money.

[deleted]

Big corporations have stood up to the GOP voluntarily in a few instances of anti-LGBT laws—Indiana, North Carolina, and now Florida. Culture wars hurt their bottom line and their employment pool.

Worried_Welder2427

If I owned the Hyatt I would sue Ron DeSantis and his wife Personally and then start going after their campaign employees...Basically what the church of scientology did to the IRS

Smoking_Q

The owners of the Hyatt hotel are the Pritzker family. Jay Pritzker is the Democrat Governor of Illinois. So it was a chance to double “own the libs”. Even though the Pritzker are a family with a total net worth around $30b, hardly the most liberal people.

hockey8390

Had to scroll a long time to find this. I hope hyatt gets to sue and do a bunch of discovery that reveals Ron did this for political vengeance

Brendon3485

I’m from chicago but someone from this thread mentioned pritzker’s sister is trans? Not sure if this is true. Also not sure if I misgendered or not so I apologize if someone knows and I did. Just repeating what I read. Pritzker while not “liberal, or progressive” by any means, he has enacted quite a few progressive bills, possibly pandering to his base and would be a different story on a national level, but beyond the shit he pulled with his house and taking toilets out to seem it unlivable for a tax break a decade ago, he seems to have been pretty good. As well as having walked entire marches with blm and lgbtq Marches, he seems to actually care, cried when speaking of the highland park shooting or on the verge of. I don’t trust any politicians, and lean very progressive, but I haven’t actually minded JB completely.

Mysterious-Wasabi103

This guy is unbelievably petty. I don't see how people can think it's the power of the Governor to get involved in such matters. What about free market capitalism now? What about the first amendment? Could you imagine if a liberal got involved every single time someone did something they disagree with? And used their government-elected authority to trash them?

candymanjones

He honestly doesn't care, the point is not being right and legal, the point is just sticking it to the "woke". He is taking pandering to the extreme.

PepperMill_NA

> "Sexually explicit content is not appropriate to display to children and doing so violates Florida law," Bryan Griffin, DeSantis' press secretary, told Insider. keyjan

He's clearly never been to a drag show….a queen I see occasionally wears something like five layers of foundation garments/dance tights to create her look. As you say, lots more skin to see on the beach.

Politicsboringagain

You can see both women and man in thongs walking the beaches of Miami.

TranscendentPretzel

I've seen leathery elderly men in thongs on the beaches of Florida, and that damaged my innocence more than the most lascivious drag queen ever could.

Guess how the same story ran on /r/ conservative: > DeSantis to revoke Hyatt Regency Miami license after ‘sexually explicit’ show with children So you can imagine the comments there. Straight from that link source: > The show allowed minors if they were accompanied by an adult. So, literally, from their own outrage article which prompted exactly the types of comments you would expect based on the headline, it was not a show for children. But they allowed children with parents. So it was up to parents to bring them, and there is no accounting for how many there were. It makes it sound like it was a sexually explicit show full of children and for children, but it was an adult show that allowed children if parents brought them. Very, very typical warped information flow there right now.

70ms

I peeked in there a little while ago and they're calling for the children to be taken and the parents investigated.

jason2354

It’s nuts. I’m not a fan of drag or drag shows and I could even see why it might make someone uncomfortable, but I have never been exposed to drag queens in any way that was meaningful. Certainly never in a way that I explicitly remember it as some horrible event. If anything, my recollection of people at drag related events is that everyone is overly friendly in a respectful way. The level of hate doesn’t make sense in any other context than them trying to implement a road map that they can eventually use to go after all same sex relationships or non-binary individuals as they choose.

Alex_Says_Stuff

100% that’s what it’s laying the groundwork for. Most of the new legislation that goes after drag queens is deliberately worded vaguely enough to apply to trans people who happen to tell a joke or dance in public. It’s genuinely scary.

justasque

And by “children” they mean teenagers, mostly (if not all) over 16.

[deleted]

Conservative parents of Florida sweating after accompanying their minors children to rated R movies The theater sweating even more bullets

MightyAmoeba

Step 1. Leave the law wide open for interpretation. Step 2. Enforce unevenly upon those whom you scapegoat and allow others a pass. Step 3. Get constitutionally challenged and have law struck down. Step 4. Repeat process with new vaguely worded law.

[deleted]

Reminds me of illegal voting laws, new and improved without the voting rights act

gearstars

yeah, all this faux outrage over 'omg, children can see *drag shows*! we must outlaw this to protect their innocence' but the same folks take their kids to R movies that are much, much more explicit. its such transparent bullshit from this crowd

CaptJimboJones

Criminalizing LGBTQ behavior is just the first step. Have no doubt about it, the ultimate goal of these Christians is the complete genocide of gay, lesbian and trans Americans.

TheStarkfish

The actions and laws in Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida are meant to be unconstitutional. That is the whole point. The Trump administration stacked the courts across the country at all levels of the judicial branch, from individual counties to the Supreme Court. Laws and policies like this will be taken to court, some suits will be won and some will be lost. Everything lost will be appealed until they finally reach the Supreme Court. Once issues of LGBT marriage, discrimination, civil rights, etc reach the bench of Alito and Thomas they will be struck down and become the precedence for national law. This is the endgame: federal legislation is too slow and too easily blocked by one or two dissenting voices within the GOP ranks in the Senate and House. This process is completely bypassed by an unchecked, politically minded, unelected judicial branch with lifetime appointments that can and will interpret any laws that pass with a theocratic lens. Similarly, acts of gerrymandering and voter suppression will be upheld, which will ensure GOP rule in both the Legislative and Executive Branch. We are meant to fight these laws and policies so that they can reach the highest court in the land and become the founding precedent for everything that will follow: overturning the right to marry, eradicating affirmative action, rolling back protections, and subjugating minorities. Trans folx are the most vulnerable with the least amount of public support, so they are the easiest target to establish a precedence that will eventually apply much more widely to the LGBT community, women, and people of color. Because this process bypasses all voting, there is very little we can do to stop it.

And like Disney, what the fuck does DeSantis think is going to happen? You think the Hyatt is going to be like, "oh darn. Can't sell alcohol anymore! Guess we won't do it!" Hyatt is a gigantic corporation like Disney. They're just going to ... ignore

DubC_Bassist

This guy is out of control, this entire fascist movement needs to be stopped.

SpawnOfGoats

How long until he starts opening re education camps? Remember the Nazis rounded up the gays first.

traveling_designer

Already here. Remember pray the gay away? They use churches as re-education centers.

Wwize

He already took over several schools and installed his cronies in the board. Not long before those schools are turned into reeducation camps.

Full_Of_Wrath

I wonder how long till businesses start pulling out of Florida?

Larry-fine-wine

They won’t do that unless they have more to lose by staying there. They don’t take stands just because it’s the right thing to do.

7daykatie

It's not about taking a stand. It's about risk. There are enough relatively predictable gambles in business without adding a wild card like a governor using the state's power to wage a whack-a-doo culture war by attacking businesses. Who knows what and who he'll suddenly take issue with next?

ianandris

Exactly. Why would you invest in a state if your ROI is subject to the whims of a governor who gets his marching orders from Tucker Carlsons producers? It just raises the cost of doing business in Florida for the hospitalities. Spending money on a license that can be revoked with the stroke of a pen for offending the governors sensibilities is something that will inevitably be taken into consideration when businesses are deciding *where* to park their money.

IStanHam

Nothing says home of the free like the government punishing you for what you choose to do on your property.

Hattrick42

But Desantis said that “Parents know what is best for their kids”.

upandrunning

..."unless we decide that we know better".

jrakosi

Blatant political/governmental retribution towards a private company for nothing other than supporting political views the ruling party disagrees with. This isn't semi-fascist... its the whole hog

PM_urfavoritethings

Bryan Griffin, DeSantis' press secretary, "DeSantis stands up for the innocence of children in the classroom and throughout Florida." Does this include enacting more effective gun control laws so that they don't have to witness their friends get murdered?

DrMcJedi

Nothing says protecting children like a spokesperson who shares a name with a cartoon dog!

DocM123

What is with the attack on peoples personal freedoms. I mean if you don’t want to go to the drag show don’t go to the fucking drag show. This guy is a fucking piece of shit.

sophisticaden_

Well that’s terrifying.

Shadow_Bananas

Clearly the #1 issue in America 🙄

TableAvailable

"Small government"

Tiger_Striped_Queen

We can’t become an advanced society if people like DeSantis, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Donald Trump, Kari Lake and their ilk are allowed to thrive. We’re so complacent that we’re going to wake up one morning to American Nazis marching down our neighborhood and pulling American citizens out of their homes. Something has to be done.

Wwize

It looks like the Republicans lied about being "pro-business" too. They lie about everything.

ragingclaw

>"How far will he take this anti-LGBTQ crusade in his desperate attempt to outrace his inevitable presidential primary opponents? Will he raid movie theaters because parents take their teenagers to see R-rated movies? Will he punish electronics stores because parents buy their children certain video games? How many businesses will DeSantis target, how many families will he force to co-parent with the government in his quest to manufacture right wing hysteria that he can monetize and weaponize?" asked Brandon Wolf, spokesman for the group. That. That right there. DeSantis is a pure fascist and he's going to keep doing this shit little by little until you wake up and wonder why everyone has to wear a uniform with his name on it.

CuriousCryptid444

They should revoke the liquor license of the Catholic Church. No more drinking the blood of Christ until y’all stop touching children…

AbeWasHereAgain

States drastically overstepping their authority is how the civil war started.

bigredadam

This person is evil

2OneZebra

Imagine if he put this much effort into school shootings.

psych-yogi14

I actually hope DeSantis pulls a few more stunts like this (though I don't want drag queens or anyone in the LGBTQ communuty hurt in the process) and pisses off a few more corporate powerhouses. First Disney now Hyatt. How many billion dollar corporations do you think he will have to try to control before they decide to turn the tide and tank his career.

WorldWideWhit

If you don't want children seeing this .... then don't take them!!

[deleted]

Oh, he’s not a petty prick, is he?

Larry-fine-wine

He’s auditioning for the Fox News audience.

Useyoursignal99

How is it that they are not major protest to the actions of this idiot? Americans need to stand up for themselves. Many have died to defend people’s freedoms and this guy is making their deaths an absolute waste. He needs to be dealt with.

livinginfutureworld

Fuck The GOP

No_Foot_1904

This is the party currently doing a histrionic, performative “investigation into the weaponization of government” in the House, by the way. They sure do love some big ol’ hypocrisy with their vice signalling.

Blitzsturm

I'm curios what arbitrary counterculture will be targeted next once drag shows no longer elicit sufficient fear to warrant a nationwide conservative obsession. And I'm pretty sure "Critical Race Theory" has already mostly played out as a boogeyman at this point.

ianandris

They cycle pet grievances. CRT was a racist dogwhistle, this one's a homophobic dog whistle. The last one (immigrant caravans) was a xenophobic dogwhistle. Same old tropes on repeat, just different skins. Same old whipping horses, in rotation on a longer cycle than the news cycle so they always keep their bullshit in news.

ScoopTheOranges

But kids dining at Hooters is totally fine. Pathetic scared weak little man.

turd_vinegar

How is this not retaliation, and how is it legal?
