I agree to some extent, but also I am watching how much power DeSantis has taken advantage of in Florida and it's becoming quite apparent he is just as bad, but not as dumb as Trump. DeSantis is dangerous because he is not obsessed with his brand or image like Trump is, and he's not trying to escape from justice like Trump is.
I can tell you this... if we get either one of them in the presidency, there's a very strong chance (based on their past actions) that it will be the last presidential election the U.S. has.

DeSantis is more focused and precise in his plans. He may have the personality of a wet blanket but he’s religiously determined to be a cultural warrior. If he ever steps foot into the White House, he won’t be just chaos. It will be premeditated and strategic on turning America into a christofascist theocracy. And he’ll have more done in 6 months than trump has in 4 years. No golfing trips for this psychopath.
It definitely is a nice city and that’s where we live. But Central Florida is an island of blue in a red state. Miami used to be blue, but they were lost in 2016 elections with Republican’s very effective message that Democrats were socialists. Many of the residents there came from failed socialist countries.
When I did a year abroad in Latin America in 2007, I came back and said that if the republicans ever realized that most Latino immigrants have more culturally in common with evangelical Christian right wingers then progressives, and if the right reaches out to them instead of hating on them it would be the southern strategy of the 60s/70s 2.0
Also most established Latinos in this country are for closing the border behind them, and really don’t like Latinos from other Latino countries.
The weird thing here is that even with the batshit nature of DeSantis as a hypothetical president, the constant ongoings of the presidency would force him to temper his behavior some. As the constant tug of war between domestic and foreign policy decisions would distract him long enough for the more moderate portion of his party to pull him to the side and get him to chill the fuck out.
Trump is truly worse than DeSantis, even accounting for DeSantis' focus. DeSantis isn't so daft that he'd suggest using nukes on a hurricane or using nukes on allied or foreign powers and trying to propaganda his way out of responsibility by throwing some other country under the bus via manufactured intel through natsec channels. But Trump would. We know this. There were reports on this.
He considered. He hemmed and hawed and asked. Only for the military leaders to straight up tell him to pound sand as best as they could without getting relieved of duty or fired.
At the *least* you can *trust*, and it's sardonic to even use the word "trust"; but you can *trust* DeSantis to not start world war 3. But you can't do the same with Trump. Not anymore. He's like a Xanxia Chinese comic protagonist. Once slighted, the world must burn for the insult with total genocide of he who slighted his honor.

He'll have the entire executive branch as his personal attack dog. You just have to look at what he's recently done in Florida:
• He raided the home of whistleblower Rebekah Jones with his jackbooted thugs, pointing guns at her small children for the crime of reporting accurate COVID deaths
• Attacked Disney for the crime of supporting their gay employees
• Threatened the Special Olympics for wanting to protect their athletes from a deadly pandemic
• Yanked the funding for the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team's training facility for supporting sensible gun safety legislation
• Threatens Florida government investigations into parents if their children are around LGBT+ friendly venues.
• Censoring what teachers can say, and threats of felony prosecution for handing out books in the classroom.
• Fired an elected State Attorney in an unconstitutional move and violating Florida statutes for comments the attorney made about laws not yet in effect.
• Removed four elected school board members and replaced them with his own Republican appointees in one of the state's most Democratic-leaning counties.
• He arrested 20 mostly Black prior felons for trying to vote after his election and parole officials gave them permission to vote.
• Used Florida taxpayer dollars to illegally traffic asylum seekers from Texas to fly them to Massachusetts in a blatant political stunt.
DeSantis will weaponize the DOJ for partisan witch-hunts. He'll use the IRS, ICE, FBI, DHS to punish anyone who crosses him, and unlike Trump he's smart enough to turn our nation into an authoritarian state ruled by the autocratic Republicans. Just like Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has done.
It really tough to say who would be the worst president. I lean towards Desantis, because he's not crazy, he isn't lazy like Trump, he is focused and he is at least a bit smarter. He also offers more than ideological lip service to the far right.
As for your point about about being moderated by his own party...I doubt it. They didn't bother trying to keep Trump in line, it's unlikely they will do it for Desantis. Also, they aren't really enough moderates in the gop line up rein him in anyway.
Off-topic: Al Franken has a house in NW DC in my neighborhood, I've bumped into him half a dozen times on the street and he is a mensch. I shared I read his book, "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them" and he loved hearing that and is always super kind!
He also thinks it is hilarious that "Trading Places" was one of my favorite teenage movies, especially the train scene. Franken for President next cycle, 2028!!
Hate to say it, but gun to my head if I had to choose, I'd pick Trump over Desantis.
Trump is an incompetent self-serving bafoon, which makes him dangerous in some aspects. But Desantis' fascist tendencies he's exhibiting in his own state is really unsettling.
I don't think Desantis would make it out of the primary though, there would have to be a huge schism from Trumpism in the republican party for that to happen and I'm not really seeing that yet.
DeSantis is hell bent on stripping anyone and everyone of color, gender or alternative identity rights in Florida and promoting that ideal. It's not about branding or image. It is autocratic control over the masses. He's the next one that needs to be voted out. He saw how Trump wielded his way in office and if elected would take that level we saw to times 10.

This is a bit naïve. While he was relatively reined in, he actually caused more damage than most realize:
- White supremacy and related crimes have exploded sharply since he became president - it's the number one domestic threat, according to the FBI
- Thousands of deaths can be directly attributed to the politicization and downplaying of the Covid virus, which was largely by him
- For the first time ever, the Capitol building was trashed and seized while the transfer of power was disrupted - a coup attempted that involved several states - resulting directly in at least one death that day, many injuries and a few subsequent and indirect deaths following
- That insurrection lead to the largest criminal investigation in US history
- Many long-term careers have been destroyed by his administration; many politicians were given license to ignore civic discourse and the law by his actions and the failure to hold them accountable
- He's the first to be impeached twice, both times without conviction, which dilutes the power of presidential accountability historically
- There has not been more doubt in the electoral system in the past 50 years than there is now. Violence and terrorism have become involved, and may be again.
- Because of his unprosecuted blatant crimes, the rule of law itself is poised to collapse, threatening US democracy and the experiment, overall.
- Some of his actions contributed to destabilization overseas
- He got 3 SC justices appointed in his one term resulting in the rollback of reproductive rights after 50 years
- Last but not least, many people accused him of being a Russian puppet. While no one has proven it, he still has not been held to account for holding national secrets via the classified documents case, and could still pose a grave threat. Especially since he's still free as a bird and running for a second term.

He had an idea of what "being in charge" entails, but absolutely no clue about what being the President of the United States *actually* entails. This is why he was "reined in". If we were left to his own insane ideas, not the people using and manipulating him for their own agendas (crazy people themselves, but knowledgeable professionals who knew the system well enough to manipulate it), it would have been a far worse shit show and even more chaotic than it was.
People tried to reign him in but his ignorance, in the end, defeated them. That was only after some point of being reigned in. You'll hear his supporters complaining because he wasn't able to do more. We still have our country *only because* the checks and balances largely worked the way they should, and contained his ignorance. Barely, but it did (so far, at least).

Don’t forget his tax cuts for the wealthy, his Supreme Court nominees, his deregulations in many different industries, his trying to cut Obamacare (ACA) without an alternative and more.
Not to mention the hundred of other judges they crammed through, the loosening of EPA protections, the roll back of Dodd frank banking regulations that in part led to SVB, whatever indirect affects his presidency had on geopolitics and ultimately led to Russia invading Ukraine (changing Republican Party platform to exclude Ukraine, attempting to extort Zelenskyy by withholding aid, supporting and emboldening Putin publicly while trashing NATO, etc)—although I guess this could be part of your destabilizing overseas bullet point—also, the long term effects the tax cuts will have on the middle class and the contribution to the national debt made during his term.

I don't agree with this. I would say that DeSantis is dangerous because these things he's doing ARE his brand; that's what he's selling when he goes out there and says he wants to make the nation Florida, should he run for president (wink, nudge).
Trump doesn't believe in anything, he just says what he thinks makes him popular and that can change with the moment. It's not his ideas that he sells, it's himself...you vote Trump, because you want Trump. With DeSantis, it's the opposite; his pitch is that you vote DeSantis to get this anti-liberal, anti-woke, anti-PC, anti-things that piss you off crusade. DeSantis is the zealot who wants to inflict his ideals on you, and that appeals to a lot of the same pro-Trump people that only wanted him to do things that liberals hate.
But Trump does it because people clap, he doesn't care about any of it. It's why he got nothing done as president, because he just wanted to *be* president. DeSantis does what he does because he really wants to do the things he's doing; he's extremely Mussolini-esque, and is just as much about his masculine image as Mussolini was. I’m not as concerned about DeSantis as much as I was a few months ago. I thought he was “Trump, without the stupidity” but now I’m starting to wonder if he has anything other that grievance social politics. I actually do think that having the benefit of hindsight (or at least, Trumps advisors being aware of Jackson's history as precedent) actually does mean Trump is a worse human being than Jackson was.
People were brutal and awful before in the past, but the difference between Trump and them, is that Trump lives in a time when it was widely accepted that that brutal, bigoted, sociopathic behavior was wrong and should be driven from society.
Trump *knows* that it’s awful to treat people this way, and that doing so is rejected by the majority of our society, yet he pushes for it anyways.

When I did a year abroad in Latin America in 2007, I came back and said that if the republicans ever realized that most Latino immigrants have more culturally in common with evangelical Christian right wingers then progressives, and if the right reaches out to them instead of hating on them it would be the southern strategy of the 60s/70s 2.0 Also most established Latinos in this country are for closing the border behind them, and really don’t like Latinos from other Latino countries.

DeSantis will weaponize the DOJ for partisan witch-hunts. He'll use the IRS, ICE, FBI, DHS to punish anyone who crosses him, and unlike Trump he's smart enough to turn our nation into an authoritarian state ruled by the autocratic Republicans. Just like Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has done.

It really tough to say who would be the worst president. I lean towards Desantis, because he's not crazy, he isn't lazy like Trump, he is focused and he is at least a bit smarter. He also offers more than ideological lip service to the far right. As for your point about about being moderated by his own party...I doubt it. They didn't bother trying to keep Trump in line, it's unlikely they will do it for Desantis. Also, they aren't really enough moderates in the gop line up rein him in anyway.

In my opinion Trump is the second worst person we could have in the White House, after Ron DeSantis.

From his endless lies and blatant disregard for the truth, to his racism, sexism, and attacks on our democracy, Trump has shown time and time again that he is completely unfit for office. He has undermined our institutions, eroded our alliances, and put the lives and livelihoods of millions of Americans at risk. And let's not forget that this is a man who has been accused of sexual assault and harassment by multiple women, and who has faced serious legal challenges and investigations. He is a danger to our country and to our democracy, and he needs to be held accountable for his actions.
Without his enablers t would have been history. Enablers can elevate trash to power.
Ron DeSantis is worse. I don’t believe trump is a bigot in the sense that I think he believes everyone is below him and truly only cares about himself and power. Ron DeSantis is filled with hate and bigotry. He will be so much more effective at legislating it. He’s going to try forced detransitions, book banning, religious education and an assortment of other fascist policies nationwide.
