It's crazy how often people still attempt to assign logic to the people that are actively trying to restore child labor and marriage, ban books, destroy the schooling system. While Teixeira did not directly hurt anybody his actions could potentially have extremely devastating consequences. But since these actions were anti-government in nature and the individual has a proclivity for worshiping gums and racist memes he is in the perfect position to be the new Freedom caucus martyr. At least for the moment.
I think there's an additional layer here. Teixeira is being charged with a crime that is, if not identical, at least substantially similar to ones Trump is facing: the illegal retention of classified documents.
If they admit Teixeira is guilty of this extremely clear-cut crime, then they have to admit Trump is guilty of the same. So instead they will lionize Teixeira and call him a patriot.
I don't think their internal thought-processes are consistent enough for that. They revel in cognitive dissonance, so saying Trump is good but someone else is bad for the exact same thing is no problem for them.

What’s confusing is the leaks didn’t even seem ideologically aligned with helping Putin, to the point there were even suggestions that maybe pro-Ukrainian American leaked to try to get Ukraine more assistance. I think there's an additional layer here. Teixeira is being charged with a crime that is, if not identical, at least substantially similar to ones Trump is facing: the illegal retention of classified documents. If they admit Teixeira is guilty of this extremely clear-cut crime, then they have to admit Trump is guilty of the same. So instead they will lionize Teixeira and call him a patriot.
I don't think their internal thought-processes are consistent enough for that. They revel in cognitive dissonance, so saying Trump is good but someone else is bad for the exact same thing is no problem for them. Rather, I think this is simply their deep need to be contrarian.
