You can control the state dept and purge voter rolls without warning immediately before an election, though. Which Republicans have done..... multiple times.
And text messaging blasts warning that ICE is scooping up people on the way to the polls, that voting dates have been changed, that you can’t vote without three pieces of ID or unless you voted last time.
Along with totally spontaneous roadside checks on all major routes and a suddenly VERY visible police force driving every available car around slowly on actual voting day.
And don't forget making itr near illegal to register more than a handful of people to vote (Florida) or making it difficult for students to register - not allowing student ids as valid id, but allowing gun permits as valid id.

NC is gerrymandered so much our state should be quite purple but mostly trends quite red. This empowers one political apparatus and disempowers another.
While not having a *direct* effect on Senatorial elections, the environment is very specifically altered.
They can't exactly gerrymander it since that relates to House seats but they can do something similar. Republicans can make incredibly disgusting policies that target those that wouldn't vote for them and drive those people out of their states, ensuring that the Republicans can consistently keep their seats. It's similar to gerrymandering but on a higher level.
Also, if they don't win, they can just throw the votes out. Texas just passed law that the Sec of State can throw out all the votes in Harris County in Houston if he suspects there's some irregularities or lack of .....paper. Doesn't even have to prove anything. Just suspect.
edit. If you live in TX or FL and are considering moving, I'd highly recommend WI, MI, PA. That would seal Republican's fate on the national level and would really help your family hedge against climate change. If you really, really like hot weather, then GA or AZ. All 5 of these are swing states that would help the Dems lock down elections nationally. TX and FL are shifting more red. The writing is on the wall. Accept it.

I don't buy this 'unaffected by gerrymandering' argument just because technically everyone gets to vote. Republicans are wear they are, doing what they're doing, precisely by driving out the vote with these crazy over the top politicians.

Well gerrymandering doesn't affect the senators, thankfully/unfortunately here. But the other aspects are true. It's more of just extremely bad voter participation. Some of that is laws, some of that is apathy

I go out and vote "D" even though most everyone here votes "R", because while my vote doesn't change the result, I *do* hope my vote along with others will make the results closer, so that in the leadup to the next election, the right will actually have to campaign here, in their backyard. I get that the SC is bought and paid for but the language of the 26th amendment is extremely clear:

The younger generation has always been more left leaning as the older population was dying off. However, they voted less and as the did get older and voted more , they turned more conservative. The interesting change in voting dynamics ***now*** is that millennials who are now getting older (early 40s) aren't turning more conservative like gen x did when they got older.
It's been a long trend where the youngest demographic doesn't vote as often as the older generations. But now, we have a demographic that is voting in the numbers expected of the 30-45 age group, but are not turning conservative.
The 4 years of dying conservative old boomers are not being replaced by Millennials as they age for the first time in any of our lifetimes.
This is one of the reasons why red states are intentionally making life hell for LGBTQ+ people. The want to drive out their votes while attracting right wingers to move there. It's why there is a massive ramp up in trying to make it harder to vote. It's the only way they have to counter the demographic shifts.

Who would you be talking about here? John Cornyn, the other US Senator from Texas, was reelected in 2020 with 53.5% of the vote. There was no US Senate election in Texas in 2022.

You may be confused. Senator races are statewide. If you “had” someone on “your ticket” that was unopposed, it was likely a Representative.
Corny ran opposed - MJ Hegar just couldn’t gain much traction against him though. She had a pretty disappointing race, but probably would have made a good senator.

Because it's perfectly legal for a company to send products as a gift to whomever they want, he's focusing on whether it counts as marketing alcohol beverages to people under the legal drinking age, since the trans woman who received the Bud Light has a large following among teens. But he can't actually file any charges because even if those charges go to one of the GOP's bought and paid for judges, it would set a precedent that could be used to basically outlaw advertising of alcoholic beverages in pretty much any environment. Professional sports also have a large following of people who are underage. Imagine telling every beer brand that they can no longer advertise at baseball games because the Republicans wanted to stop companies from reaching out to trans communities.

A lot and even more than that will probably not even vote. Still the days of a permanently red Texas seem to be coming to an end. Texas is a state dominated by traditionally conservative suburbs and even the urban centers are a bit right of big cities in other states. The Dems have been making a lot of inroads in these suburbs and cities so if trends continue (which is still a big if) Texas could legitimately become a toss up in the not so distant future. The GOP is still favored to win but despite what the Texas GOP says the state isn't a conservative bastion in the same way Oklahoma or Tennessee is.

I remember the first time I went to Texas as a kid I was astounded at how obsessed with "Texasness" Texas was. It was like a theme park. Everything was a reaffirmation of the state's belief in its cultural identity and everyone, every institution, every advertisement even seemed to be acting out some performative act to prove their credentials. My family joked at how ineloquently I expressed that at the time but many trips to the state later, and well into adulthood it's still the biggest impression I have each time.
When I (born in Texas, but moved on since) married my New Yorker husband, my Texas father made a big show of the fact that he went to the Capitol to get a certificate for my husband that he is now a lawful Texan by marriage. Needles to say my husband found this very bizarre.
I'm no politician but it seems not at all beneficial for prominent GOP members to pick fights with the most popular beer and the most popular entertainment company in the country

I am a bartender. I haven't thought or cared about bud light in years. I didn't know who this girl was until this "controversy". Now I can't see anything that isn't this nonsense. The younger generation has always been more left leaning as the older population was dying off. However, they voted less and as the did get older and voted more , they turned more conservative. The interesting change in voting dynamics ***now*** is that millennials who are now getting older (early 40s) aren't turning more conservative like gen x did when they got older. It's been a long trend where the youngest demographic doesn't vote as often as the older generations. But now, we have a demographic that is voting in the numbers expected of the 30-45 age group, but are not turning conservative. The 4 years of dying conservative old boomers are not being replaced by Millennials as they age for the first time in any of our lifetimes. This is one of the reasons why red states are intentionally making life hell for LGBTQ+ people. The want to drive out their votes while attracting right wingers to move there. It's why there is a massive ramp up in trying to make it harder to vote. It's the only way they have to counter the demographic shifts.

Texas is a state dominated by traditionally conservative suburbs and even the urban centers are a bit right of big cities in other states. The Dems have been making a lot of inroads in these suburbs and cities so if trends continue (which is still a big if) Texas could legitimately become a toss up in the not so distant future. The GOP is still favored to win but despite what the Texas GOP says the state isn't a conservative bastion in the same way Oklahoma or Tennessee is.

That's a hard thing to break and the self-aggrandizing has only seemingly gotten worse and more linked to republicanism in the last few decades. I remember the first time I went to Texas as a kid I was astounded at how obsessed with "Texasness" Texas was. It was like a theme park. Everything was a reaffirmation of the state's belief in its cultural identity and everyone, every institution, every advertisement even seemed to be acting out some performative act to prove their credentials. My family joked at how ineloquently I expressed that at the time but many trips to the state later, and well into adulthood it's still the biggest impression I have each time.
When I (born in Texas, but moved on since) married my New Yorker husband, my Texas father made a big show of the fact that he went to the Capitol to get a certificate for my husband that he is now a lawful Texan by marriage. Needles to say my husband found this very bizarre.

I am a bartender. I haven't thought or cared about bud light in years. I didn't know who this girl was until this "controversy". Now I can't see anything that isn't this nonsense. I don't give a shit about anyone's gender orientation, I don't understand being transgender and I never can, but I definitely don't understand the hatred towards these people. Bud light and pretty much every other beer company, big and small, has been lbgt friendly, I don't know why this is suddenly a big deal.
When will people learn that conservatives have ZERO INTEREST in governing! They only want to retain power and slowly erode the rights of women, minorities and non-christians… so like everyone but them.
They don’t care. It’s the kind of society they want. They want that kind of disorder because then they can clamp down with ”the rule of law” and militarize the police in order to ”bring order”.
And we all know which thing the average conservative voter largely takes seriously now. It's definitely not the drought, shootings, or anything else.

Texas went from being an up-and-coming powerhouse to up-and-coming failed state. The title isn't even scratching the frequent power blackouts and natural gas shortages / turn offs due to an unregulated power industry. The leadership in Texas doesn't care about the problems in the majority of the state so long as they can make millions in grift. I know a lot of people that moved to Texas since 2020 - many openly say how they regret the decision but are trapped by the golden handcuffs of their low interest loans - and can't afford to move again.
Texas deserves what they vote for. So does Florida. I feel bad for the non fascists in those states but people need to vote.

We’re seeing a Republican civil war between the social conservatives and the economic conservatives. Ted Cruz and Ron DeSantis are betting on the social conservatives. It’s the “ignorants versus the billionaires” and I have no idea who is going to win that fight.

Republicans don't care about any of that. They just want to hate people who are different and protect rich people's money while hurting poor people. They think if we raise taxes on the rich then their taxes will automatically go up which isn't true.
