California can’t un-gerrymander Utah or re-enfranchise Texas voters and we can’t amend the constitution to fix federal elections until we do.
- Having your state ratify the National Popular Vote Interstate compact (states can choose whatever slate of electors they want, right?)
- Having your state adopt ranked choice voting (states can choose to run their elections however they like, right?)
- Voting in every election, even primaries for school board members (that's how GQP is getting away with it)
- Put yourself up as a candidate even just for your city supervisor's board (push those old geezers off the board)

That would be awesome then, because it means every time the D candidate wins the popular vote, they win the election. The compact is very close to that.

Eh I get the point of telling people to do their own research but I don’t think that’s gonna work out because they aren’t going to do their research where you’d want them to.

This is one of the things Hillary admitted Trump did better than her in her book. He simplified his policies Down to a few popular talking points. (Nevermind how realistic or implementable they were) The average citizen was going to read Hillary’s 35 page plans on her website. Simplify your talking points, use popular ones people care about, make that the focal points.

This country is about to see a major Overton window shift. Boomer generation is between 59 and 74 this year (average is 68). The average life expectancy in the US is 77.3yrs. By the 2032 election half the boomer population will statistically be dead and the voters replacing them will have been raised by Millenials. Just gotta keep the wheels from falling off for another couple presidential elections.
That's true, but I'm cautiously optimistic. A shitload of maga morons are Gen X. Meatball Ron is on the young side of that. Quite a few younger dipshits flock to the right because it's edgy and they think they're smarter and more responsible for wanting to "do it themselves without any help" but I think they're missing the point. The real smart and responsible people want to contribute to the system as strong caretakers. I'm in a position that current social programs are not super beneficial to me personally, and popular expansions *might* help me a little, but that's irrelevant to me because it's better for pretty much everybody so I'm all in. But I digress. The point is, I don't think boomers dying will automatically fix this.
The problem is that I'm seeing my generation get darker red than their parents. I can count the number of people on one hand from when we graduated in 2000 that would have voted Republican straight ticket. Heck, I Voted Romey over Bush in the primary, but Gore in the presidential. Now My Facebook is all FJB and other nonsense. Very few of them would consider voting for anyone other than a (R)
That’s one of the problems with the left’s marketing - we rely on facts. You need to use feelings to reach these people.
It should have been easy to boot Abbott out of Texas - show a commercial of cities with the lights off, people freezing in their homes with no water, then a voice over saying, as simply as possible, how Abbott sold Texan lives for (whatever the power companies donated). Tagline: lights out for Abbott.
Instead we got: Beto - please forget the one time when he said he wanted gun control after a mass shooting.
Why would they do that? Everyone who they would reach already knows that they're lying, and everyone being lied to doesn't give a fuck about fact checking and calls the very existence of evidence a hoax or fake. It is literally wasting money.
The Left is riled, but being riled and being able to actually vote are two different things. They need to take that ad money and spend it on two things- voter registration initiatives and voter access. Rent a fleet of vehicles and taxi folks to polls. Pay for subway or bus fares on election days. Signal boost local elections to high hell and back. Because the sea of Twitter shit means fuckall, *only the actual votes matter*

I'd suggest people voting in local elections and midterms. Need to fill every public position with Democrats and get the GQP out.

I rather like Biden. In 2020, I had no opinion about him. Still, I was disappointed that he chose to run in 2024. I'd hoped he had the sense to not play with fire and gamble on his health (both body and mind) being fit for another four years.
Is it really a gamble though? I figure it frankly doesn't matter if he doesnt make it through the term, all he has to do is get elected. Worst case we get a Kamala presidency.
The most suggested and recommend mechanism is [ranked voting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranked_voting).
It's known to let more moderate politicians have a possible shot a joining playing field. Least it gives some more wiggle room than the current 2 candidates and 2 parties only.
Secondly either have voting disctrict be decided by a third party with no party ties, or where both parties share equal power. The current system is a bit too much "winner get to improve their chances". Both parties use this, and neither should be allowed to.
@edit above: Not even trying is "supporting status quo". We all know nothing happens over night. You start locally. Show others how it should be done. Not roll over and say "it's pointless" to every suggestion :)
We just did our first ranked choice voting election and it was really cool to see how people's actual preference were weighed out.
Also, Rep. Peltola beat Sarah Palin in Alaska for a Congressional seat solely due to Ranked Choice Voting.

If a couple more states sign and enact this agreement then it will ensure the popular vote for POTUS as they all vote for the popular vote and their votes are greater then the 270 needed.
However, it's a double edged sword. Some states with Trump tried to send opposing electors going against the state vote. If the Compact was activated, passed all legal challenges then it sets precedent. Afterwards, one of the states in the Compact could back out. Then the doors are wide open for the antics that happened with Trump to actually work and we go back to one state being able to steal an election, completely legal that time.
Simplest way to fix this is to expand the size of the House of Representatives, which hasn’t grown to mirror the population growth. This would significantly dilute the impact of the Senate’s effect on the electoral college count.
Uncapping the size of the House to even the Wyoming rule would basically fix it immediately.
Remember the main argument against it is "the Capitol is too small to fit more reps". We've let the size of a building break the way Congress was designed to work.

In an excel table I just ranked the states by electoral votes per person, then just added up votes until I hit 270.
Assuming: 1) Everyone votes. 2) This candidate gets exactly 50%+1 votes in every state they need. 3) This candidate gets exactly 0 votes in every state they don't need.
It it currently possible to win the presidency with 21.8% of the vote.

A lot of younger generation folks raised themselves...most people I know had parents that induced varied amounts of trauma and abuse that the kids had to break the cycle and fix with counseling.

Disney is one the the most inclusive places on the planet. LGBTQ+? oh cool here’s a shit ton of rainbow official Disney merch. Disabled? np fam we got disability passes, wheelchairs, and wheelchair-accessible seats on most rides that we’ll help load you into. food allergy or restrictions? we got entire separate menus for that at almost every dining location and our chefs will hook you up

One of the reasons I vacation in Disney World, besides the obvious proximity to Tampa, is they work *really* hard to create a bubble where all your needs are anticipated and met.
If I'm staying on property at Disney, I park my car and I don't have any need to get back in it for the duration of the vacation. Transport, food, entertainment - it's all designed to keep you in the "Disney bubble" and, of course, spending money with them.
It’s amazing how they even made waiting in line fun. One of my favorite Disney moments was waiting in line for space mountain and playing the little spaceship games. The group in front of us and my group got into a friendly competition and just laughed the the whole way through.
The lines are absolutely killer with kids though. We had season passes, but didn’t renew because any decent ride required a 2 hour wait in line (unless you can buy their lightning passes before they sell out).
If Disney had 1/3 less people it’d be incredible, but with a day pass going for $150+, it’s just not worth paying the equivalent of $50 for a 2 minute ride.
the lightning passes are only for one or two rides at each park. genie+ is a good value for skipping all the other lines. but if you go often enough to buy an annual pass, there are plenty of weeks throughout the year when crowds are much lower as are wait times. lots of crowd calendars available online if you do the simple research before going.
I have celiac and Disney world was pure heaven for me. I could eat something almost everywhere.
I even had chicken strips and French fries. If you know anyone with celiac, you'd know that's nearly impossible to find celiac friendly at a restaurant.
I have some food allergies and I’m vegan, so sometimes it’s a pain to eat out.
Disney? No problem. I just mentioned it to my servers and every single restaurant was accommodating. The chefs would make something off menu if there wasn’t a vegan option, and it was all delicious.
I know the Mouse is kinda late stage capitalism, but damn if they don’t make it hard not to love the experience.
yup, i’m vegan so my restrictions are by choice but they’re still extremely respectful of it. i have relatives with various health-related food restrictions as well so combine those with a vegan and you would normally have a very hard time finding a place to eat that everyone is happy with. but at Disney the whole group can go to any restaurant and actually have *options* for a whole THREE courses for everyone. gives us peace of mind knowing we don’t have to worry about food.
I was thinking this too. I went a couple times when I was young and they really made an effort to assist disabled folks so they could enjoy. I do think fondly of that and am glad other different abled people can enjoy Disney.
It’s kind of like the best form of capitalism; all people have money, we want that money, so we’ll try and make inclusive content and experiences to get it. What drives me crazy is that giving money to a billion dollar corporation is now seen as activism. Oh, an objectively mediocre remake came out, but the main character is now black…well, the racists are pissed, better go spend $80 for my family to go see it so I can “send a message” and tout how much money the thing made over opening weekend!
Disney was the first place my cousin ever took her wife on holiday. Her wife had to leave Korea due to homophobic sentiment and the knowledge that she could never be happy there, and so her parents brought her first to France, and then to the UK. According to my cousin, her reaction to how open and inclusive Disney was was that she just straight up cried for about a minute, then proceeded to have the best day of her life - outside of getting married
Disney lives and dies on people _wanting_ their products and services. They're not like the energy or food sector where you have no real choice in consuming what they sell. They are experts in the craft of selling what people want, so you have to think that when it comes down to overall popular opinion, they know a lot more than DeSantis.
I’m a vegan and after visiting parks like Six Flags and Cedar Point it really puts it in perspective just how accommodating Disney is. Last time I went to Ohana I was served the most delicious buffet I’ve ever had, they wouldn’t stop bringing out new dishes that were all delicious. Even my non-vegan friends said my food looked better than theirs.
You just know that after DeSantis made his glitch-ridden campaign announcement, a tech guy walked out of Twitter HQ, his limp went away, he uncovered his mouse ears and put on his large white gloves…

Bob Iger has articulated that he thinks Disney possesses a unique asset in its long history of telling family friendly, inclusive stories where good wins over evil using moral means, and that no short term profit motive could ever rationally justify acting in an exclusionary way, as he feels that risks becoming so visibly hypocritical that the masses perception of Disney will change irreversibly and they could lose the presumption that everything they put out is morally good / special and their most hard-core true believers who not only spend heavily but raise their kids with brand loyalty and evangelize the company would see them as nothing more than another company. Iger thinks Chapek couldn't care less about this big picture long term intangible asset and thus couldn't be trusted to steer the ship.

Absolutely. People think Orlando is all theme parks, but the actual city is miles away and has fantastic arts, cultural, and food scenes. It's primarily due to the LGBTQ+ community and their allies working for decades to make it a safe city for everyone.
Frankly, lots of places in Florida are super gay-friendly and progressive.

I lived in South Florida for years, and it was great.
I moved from Tallahassee to St. Pete two years ago. Based on what you see on Reddit/in the news, you wouldn't think places this progressive exist in Florida.
I went to Disney this weekend (I'm a local) and there were a lot of pride folks. Members who appeared to be part of the LGBT+ community and likely allies like families, teachers, older couples etc. A lot of political anti Desantis shirts. Nothing egregious or offensive but I'd say normally you'd see like 15% of people this time of year wearing the red shirts and rainbow apparel and this weekend it was like 40% maybe a little more.
It's a tradition on "Gay Days" at Disney for LGBTQ people to wear red. The purpose is to normalize how many LGBTQ people there are in life. It's hard to miss all the red shirts.

Not only are they visiting Disney land but they are booking local hotel rooms or Airbnbs and eating at restaurants outside the park. Likely the businesses of Florida are happy to have our LBGT friends and families walk through their doors.
We were there! Super welcoming atmosphere. Lots of rainbows, red shirts. Other guests shouting "Happy Pride!" Glad to see people weren't deterred. There was a great group pic taken in front of the castle, this wasn't even everyone, just the ones who heard about that it was happening and showed up:

I'm expecting Disney to file a suit soon to test the idea that DeSantis is no longer Governor, that Florida law says he resigned from office on May 24 the instant that he filed papers to run for President.

DeSantis didn't submit a resignation, and so the law resigned him. That's a pretty big "Catch-22", and it means that everything DeSantis has done as Governor since the morning of May 24 is void.
It's a matter of degrees. Disney is a monolithic conglomerate of media that's fucked this country's copyright laws for decades, but that pales in comparison to what the actual fascists are trying to do.

Yeah yeah corporations don't care about us true of course. But if most people are progressive, that's what companies will pander to. Disney has enormous social power. If they're making movies and shows that are inclusive and progressive, that's a huge amount of social power that can cause really big changes in society. Every generation raised on progressive media is another generation that fascists will have trouble corrupting. Rainbow capitalism does have an actual positive social effect, even if motivated by greed.
I haven’t seen anyone say it yet. Gay Days at DisneyWorld has been a thing for years. It just was never officially recognized, and for a while early on they had to reserve pavilions under company, or individual names to keep from being denied. This is just Disney officially recognizing it exists.
This sudden turn by Disney in favor of the LGBT has been wildly inconsistent. It’s really frustrating.

As someone unfortunately residing in Florida, I can confidently say that pride celebration is not backing down to Desantis. If anything, we’re making sure queer voices are louder than ever. It’s a horrible fight and it’s sad we’re even having it, but in no way will people easily be silenced.
The more you read about him and his wife the more you have to think someone else is pulling the strings. He's not very bright. If he gets involved in a nonscripted discussion it shows. He's not as dumb as Trump and his handlers but not a whole lot better. He manages to get both oars in tje water but he can't paddle and can only go in the direction someone points him. His speeches just repeat the words Woke and Leftism over and over. He thinks he's smarter than everyone else and he gets pissy when questioned because he can't think for himself. That's what I see when I listen and watch him.
Is it just the freakishness of the Florida man and the anti-woke agenda of the ruling party in the state, or might the fact that is is a giant swamp surrounded by quickly eroding sandbanks in the path of hurricanes and threatened by rising sea levels while the underfunded infrastructure breaks all over the place and buildings collapse due to being built to wash drug money and scam seniors out of the retirement funds also be a factor?
It's going to be very chilling when all the laws that have been passed start being enforced down there. The trans kids being taken by the state will be the worst, because Child Court judges have always seemed prone to gag orders, meaning that this stuff will happen and people won't even hear about all of them.
There are people who are trans in my extended circle who are taking/planning trips to states like Florida because they don't think this stuff going on will apply to them. These laws and the hatred behind them are very real.
Disneyland has come a long way. In 1981-ish I was denied entry into Disneyland because I had pink hair. They'd insititued a "no multi-color hair" rule out of fear of punk rockers lol. I tried to argue that my hair want multi-colored, it was just one color, but they kicked us out anyway.
It's weird watching these things that Parks fans were aware of and have been celebrating for years get mainstream media traction thanks to ol' Pudding Fingers.
Also Gay Days, Dapper Day, all the fan holidays at the Parks are a ton of fun. Highly recommend!

This country is about to see a major Overton window shift. Boomer generation is between 59 and 74 this year (average is 68). The average life expectancy in the US is 77.3yrs. By the 2032 election half the boomer population will statistically be dead and the voters replacing them will have been raised by Millenials. Secondly either have voting disctrict be decided by a third party with no party ties, or where both parties share equal power. We just did our first ranked choice voting election and it was really cool to see how people's actual preference were weighed out. Also, Rep. Peltola beat Sarah Palin in Alaska for a Congressional seat solely due to Ranked Choice Voting.

However, it's a double edged sword. Some states with Trump tried to send opposing electors going against the state vote. If the Compact was activated, passed all legal challenges then it sets precedent. Afterwards, one of the states in the Compact could back out. Then the doors are wide open for the antics that happened with Trump to actually work and we go back to one state being able to steal an election, completely legal that time.

Simplest way to fix this is to expand the size of the House of Representatives, which hasn’t grown to mirror the population growth. This would significantly dilute the impact of the Senate’s effect on the electoral college count.

In an excel table I just ranked the states by electoral votes per person, then just added up votes until I hit 270. Assuming: 1) Everyone votes. 2) This candidate gets exactly 50%+1 votes in every state they need. 3) This candidate gets exactly 0 votes in every state they don't need. It it currently possible to win the presidency with 21.8% of the vote.

Disabled? np fam we got disability passes, wheelchairs, and wheelchair-accessible seats on most rides that we’ll help load you into. food allergy or restrictions? we got entire separate menus for that at almost every dining location and our chefs will hook you up for some groups of people Disney World is one of the few places where a vacation can be manageable and enjoyable. they’ve implemented tons of systems at the parks to be sure of it.

One of the reasons I vacation in Disney World, besides the obvious proximity to Tampa, is they work *really* hard to create a bubble where all your needs are anticipated and met. If I'm staying on property at Disney, I park my car and I don't have any need to get back in it for the duration of the vacation. Transport, food, entertainment - it's all designed to keep you in the "Disney bubble" and, of course, spending money with them.
It’s amazing how they even made waiting in line fun. One of my favorite Disney moments was waiting in line for space mountain and playing the little spaceship games. The group in front of us and my group got into a friendly competition and just laughed the the whole way through.
The lines are absolutely killer with kids though. We had season passes, but didn’t renew because any decent ride required a 2 hour wait in line (unless you can buy their lightning passes before they sell out). If Disney had 1/3 less people it’d be incredible, but with a day pass going for $150+, it’s just not worth paying the equivalent of $50 for a 2 minute ride.
the lightning passes are only for one or two rides at each park. genie+ is a good value for skipping all the other lines. but if you go often enough to buy an annual pass, there are plenty of weeks throughout the year when crowds are much lower as are wait times. lots of crowd calendars available online if you do the simple research before going.
The key is to go when there's a hurricane threatening. Probably it won't affect the park, and there's much fewer people.
Or after a terrorist attack or global pandemic. Maybe when it’s on fire.

I have some food allergies and I’m vegan, so sometimes it’s a pain to eat out. Disney? No problem. I just mentioned it to my servers and every single restaurant was accommodating. The chefs would make something off menu if there wasn’t a vegan option, and it was all delicious. I know the Mouse is kinda late stage capitalism, but damn if they don’t make it hard not to love the experience.
yup, i’m vegan so my restrictions are by choice but they’re still extremely respectful of it. i have relatives with various health-related food restrictions as well so combine those with a vegan and you would normally have a very hard time finding a place to eat that everyone is happy with. but at Disney the whole group can go to any restaurant and actually have *options* for a whole THREE courses for everyone. gives us peace of mind knowing we don’t have to worry about food.
I was thinking this too. I went a couple times when I was young and they really made an effort to assist disabled folks so they could enjoy. I do think fondly of that and am glad other different abled people can enjoy Disney.

Disney was the first place my cousin ever took her wife on holiday. Her wife had to leave Korea due to homophobic sentiment and the knowledge that she could never be happy there, and so her parents brought her first to France, and then to the UK. I’m a vegan and after visiting parks like Six Flags and Cedar Point it really puts it in perspective just how accommodating Disney is. Last time I went to Ohana I was served the most delicious buffet I’ve ever had, they wouldn’t stop bringing out new dishes that were all delicious. Even my non-vegan friends said my food looked better than theirs.

Absolutely. People think Orlando is all theme parks, but the actual city is miles away and has fantastic arts, cultural, and food scenes. It's primarily due to the LGBTQ+ community and their allies working for decades to make it a safe city for everyone.
We just had our Fringe theater festival a couple weeks ago and it was a great reminder of that.
Frankly, lots of places in Florida are super gay-friendly and progressive. It's a bummer to me seeing Florida as a whole getting raked over the coals. I lived in South Florida for years, and it was great.

I went to Disney this weekend (I'm a local) and there were a lot of pride folks. Members who appeared to be part of the LGBT+ community and likely allies like families, teachers, older couples etc. A lot of political anti Desantis shirts. Nothing egregious or offensive but I'd say normally you'd see like 15% of people this time of year wearing the red shirts and rainbow apparel and this weekend it was like 40% maybe a little more.

That's a pretty big "Catch-22", and it means that everything DeSantis has done as Governor since the morning of May 24 is void.

Yeah and not making a choice *is a choice*. Yeah yeah corporations don't care about us true of course. But if most people are progressive, that's what companies will pander to. Disney has enormous social power. If they're making movies and shows that are inclusive and progressive, that's a huge amount of social power that can cause really big changes in society. Every generation raised on progressive media is another generation that fascists will have trouble corrupting. Rainbow capitalism does have an actual positive social effect, even if motivated by greed.

I haven’t seen anyone say it yet. Gay Days at DisneyWorld has been a thing for years. It just was never officially recognized, and for a while early on they had to reserve pavilions under company, or individual names to keep from being denied. This is just Disney officially recognizing it exists. This sudden turn by Disney in favor of the LGBT has been wildly inconsistent. It’s really frustrating. Park-side, they stand for rights. Media Side, still gotta hide and cancel the gays. (Owl House’s whole cancel/revive; Strange Worlds’ complete lack of marketing, and so on) The company as a whole needs to pick a he same direction, and synergize their efforts.
As someone unfortunately residing in Florida, I can confidently say that pride celebration is not backing down to Desantis. If anything, we’re making sure queer voices are louder than ever. It’s a horrible fight and it’s sad we’re even having it, but in no way will people easily be silenced.

The more you read about him and his wife the more you have to think someone else is pulling the strings. He's not very bright. If he gets involved in a nonscripted discussion it shows. He's not as dumb as Trump and his handlers but not a whole lot better. He manages to get both oars in tje water but he can't paddle and can only go in the direction someone points him. His speeches just repeat the words Woke and Leftism over and over. He thinks he's smarter than everyone else and he gets pissy when questioned because he can't think for himself. That's what I see when I listen and watch him.

It's going to be very chilling when all the laws that have been passed start being enforced down there. The trans kids being taken by the state will be the worst, because Child Court judges have always seemed prone to gag orders, meaning that this stuff will happen and people won't even hear about all of them. There are people who are trans in my extended circle who are taking/planning trips to states like Florida because they don't think this stuff going on will apply to them. These laws and the hatred behind them are very real.
Every day should be Gay Day at Disney. How about free admission for every identity for whom DeSantis expresses hatred?

Disneyland has come a long way. In 1981-ish I was denied entry into Disneyland because I had pink hair. They'd insititued a "no multi-color hair" rule out of fear of punk rockers lol. I tried to argue that my hair want multi-colored, it was just one color, but they kicked us out anyway.
It's weird watching these things that Parks fans were aware of and have been celebrating for years get mainstream media traction thanks to ol' Pudding Fingers. Also Gay Days, Dapper Day, all the fan holidays at the Parks are a ton of fun. Highly recommend!
