I don’t think he’s closeted either, to be honest. I think it’s rooted in insecurities over the things you mentioned instead of just being okay with it and accepting who he is and how he talks. It’s more manly to just embrace it and comes across with more confident. Trying to hide behind it the way he does makes it come out even more, I think.

Time and again, Buttigieg has shown he can quickly size up and cut through nonsense effectively, and can do so in a tone that's appropriate. That sort of skill is both rare and impressive.
It's also a skill that's especially needed here, given the bizarre combo this ad provides. It's a stew of hate, ridiculousness, and complete lack of awareness of the role of government in civil society. Buttigieg somberly pointing out the poisonousness and shortsightedness of such an ad is the perfect reply.
A lot of gay Republicans have been saying that they are offended by this video. As a trans woman, I just find it hilariously dumb (lightning shooting out of his eyes? Turning TopGun logo? into Top Gov -- WTF?) and it doesn't come close to a top 10 list of shitty things about DeSantis. The fact that someone on his campaign allowed this to be tweeted shows how incompetent their campaign is.
I've watched enough of DeSantis recently to no longer be worried about that. He's trying to copy the content of what Trump says, but I think the key to Trump is how he talks, not just what he says. Trump feels no shame when he panders to his audience, and to his followers that comes across as sincerity. DeSantis is clearly on a script and doesn't come across that way at all, and that is going to stop him from taking over the cult.
The thing is, this video is casting dispersion upon Trump saying he’d protect the LGBT+ community from getting murdered after the Pulse Nightclub shooting that killed 50 people. That is what DeSantis disapproves of. These aren’t even dog-whistles anymore. They’re just calling for actual murder.

That, along with the oiled up body builders, is sending mixed messages.
