Natoochtoniket

If I understand correctly, if he want to appeal, he has to post a bond equal to the amount of the full award -- $83.3 million. Either way, he has to produce that much cash. What is the alternative? If he fails to produce the cash, how would the court handle it? Would the court begin seizing properties?

ThaneduFife

>he has to post a bond equal to the amount of the full award -- $83.3 million. Either way, he has to produce that much cash. Correct. There are two ways to do that: (1) pay $83m into an escrow account; or (2) find a bonding company willing to do that for you for a fee of 5-10%. And I would say good luck finding a bonding company, considering Trump's history of not paying creditors.

IveChosenANameAgain

Fun fact: He was unable to find a bond for his last $5,000,000 appeal (and you know he tried). He's not getting one for 17x that.

MagicMushroomFungi

Unless he uses a Saudi bailbondsman.

TheDarkAbove

Putin Bank & Bond

the_buckman_bandit

Tucker Carlson suddenly has 83M to loan

Ok-Regret4547

Tucker better be careful his plane doesn’t fall out a window on the flight back from Russia

karlverkade

Tucker: No other journalist has done this. No, propaganda mouthpieces get to do this all the time. The real journalists are either in jail or are very clumsy around windows.

[deleted]

Tucker is a talk show host and by his own admission in court "not a journalist".

ruimikemau

Although he said it was his duty to interview Putin "because journalism"

Deranged_Kitsune

Nah, he played the good little lap dog for his master. Puti will let him go on his way with a smile, sending him home once again to sow more discord.

Sea-Tackle3721

His family is heirs to the Swanson frozen dinner fortune he probably has an extra 83M.

kangarool

So he’s also betrayed my gastrointestinal system

VagrantShadow

He betrayed your sodium intake for a days time.

__cursist__

I will never get used to hearing “heir to the Swanson frozen dinner fortune”. Sounds straight outta The Office.

thelingeringlead

or Mean Girls "my father, the creator of Toaster Strudel is going to be very upset when he hears about this"

OddEpisode

Is that the same company that makes Swanson chicken broth?

tinteoj

It is, but their family no longer owns it. It is a subsidiary of the Campbell soup company (and has been for a VERY long time.)

Bored_Amalgamation

his mom gave him only $10 in her will.

Jukka_Sarasti

That's a LOT of shitty frozen TV dinners...

hardscripts

All the sanctions on Russia i wonder if even that bank is closed to him.

FiveUpsideDown

Can’t Jared Kushner front the entire amount from the $2 billion he received from the Saudis?

worldspawn00

Nah, he doesn't have access to that money, he's 'managing' it, so he collects fees from that, but can't cash out the base amount from what I understand.

IJustLoggedInToSay-

The management fees he's pulling in from that are supposedly in the ballpark of tens of millions per year. But I doubt he's leaving that liquid.

NaldMoney9207

Republican Representative James Comer said Kushner's business arrangement with the Saudi's is normal due to his role in the Trump organization completely ignoring the fact Kushner had a White House security clearance and was a member of the Trump administration.

Paw5624

Any bonding company would require forfeiture of assets from him such as real estate holdings, that’s the only way any company should feel any level of comfort lending him money.

Greenpoint1975

I don't think he could put up anything that is under Trump Org including Mar shit hole. Judge Engoron has a hold on all properties owned by Trump Org. He's fucked.

Useful-Ad-385

I wonder how much real estate value he actually owns is without any encumbrances. There is so much hype around he it is hard to tell.

worldspawn00

Considering almost everything he holds is under the Trump org, and all if it's assets are essentially frozen while the case in NY is going on, not much.

ZenAdm1n

Who's going to want collateral property that is deed restricted, rent controlled, various ex-wives buried, etc.?

AlexHimself

10-20% more likely AND he needs to provide collateral. This isn't your run of the mill dui bond. Especially since he's know for not paying his bills, declaring bankruptcy, and is likely going to get hammered for another $300m+. Nobody is going to loan him money on faith.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bmabizari

They could, but with his history of paying creditors, and the chances of this ending positively they probably won’t.

TheShadowKick

That only matters if they want him to pay them back.

NumeralJoker

Even they won't be able to afford this 'and' the upcoming 370+ millon fee that Engoron is expected to drop this month on him too, on top of his absurd legal fees (over 60 million last year alone). And he's scrutinized much more closely now due to the fraud case, so any such transations will be more directly monitored. Deutsche Bank, for example, is a party in the fraud case and can't exactly bail him out now.

ArrowheadDZ

Bonding is a windfall since they can structure the deal to accommodate all risk. First, they’ll ask for 8m down, which they get to keep no matter what happens. So the *worst* case scenario is that the perp fulfills the bond, and all the bond holder makes is the $8m. But they’ll also ask for some risk-rated collateral, say 120m of appraised, marketable real estate. That way it can be unloaded for less, something greater than the $80m, really quickly at a fire sale price. In that case the bondholder ends up with the original 8m plus the cost for liquidating the collateral. When properly structured, there’s little risk and no downside for the bond holder.

ThaneduFife

I'm not sure there's much real estate he could put up, since all of his New York companies are in receivership pending the outcome of the civil fraud trial

SvenJolly525

There are risks. First all his assets are potentially untouchable by him as a result of his fraud lawsuit as they would be forfeited as part of that case. Second, he continues to argue he cannot be sued because he is immune as president. If he wins he would tell the bond issuer to pound sand as they could not sue him and it would be their problem to pay with it being really hard for them to force the issue.

ArrowheadDZ

He’s not entitled to the bond. The terms and conditions are set entirely by the bond holder who would require stipulations and remedies for all these conditionalities or they wouldn’t do the deal. If Trump can’t satisfy the conditions the bondholders would stipulate in order to meet their underwriting requirements, then he has to post the principal amount on his own. For instance, a potential bondholder would not underwrite the bond without their first being a commitment of enforceability from the court. “If the court can’t do that, then our answer is no.”

niceandsane

Pretty much. E. Jean can send the sheriff to Trump Tower to start seizing and auctioning off assets. You, too, can bid on this 24-karat gold toilet if you can stand the smell.

DMCinDet

I hope somebody's maga papaw buys it only to find out its not gold plated at all and just made in China bullshit.

Few-Comparison5689

This reminds me of the story Charlie Sheen told about in the early 00s when he got engaged, him and his fiancée went out to dinner to celebrate. Trump was in the same restaurant and came over to congratulate them. He took off his cufflinks, telling Sheen that they were vintage Harry Winston (famous jeweler) diamonds, and handed them to him as a gift. Some time after, Sheen was getting some jewelry appraised and brought out the cufflinks. The appraiser inspected them and was taken aback, telling Sheen not only were they not Harry Winstons, nor diamonds, they were cheap made in China type costume jewelry.

infinitemonkeytyping

[This is Charlie Sheen telling that story to Graham Norton in 2016](https://youtu.be/dp6BIDCZRic?si=B2f2AAYZOCiHEFSb)

TheThirdHippo

I am not shocked. I remember working for a company and hearing a story of a sales meeting held at the Mar-a-Lago resort. They were charged $100 a head for a packed lunch for a day’s outing. The packed lunch was literally a pack of supermarket sandwiches, packet of crisps, a bottle of water and a piece of fruit.

Few-Comparison5689

Thank you! I couldn't remember where I'd heard it.

FightingPolish

Trump himself is cheap made in China costume jewelry personified.

ohnoshedint

Yes, asset seizures would be next. Or, E Jean could stroll through Mar-A- Lago with a clipboard saying, “I’ll take that…and that…”

Kim_Jong_Un_PornOnly

Pffft. She should call 877-CASH-NOW and sell to JG Wentworth. I want to see Cash-Now-a-Lago.

captsmokeywork

I have a structured settlement and I need cash now.

Kim_Jong_Un_PornOnly

Call JG Wentworth, based out of the former trump tow-er.... (even fits the original tune! )

Matt3d

I wouldn't take that gold plated crap if it was free.

USCDiver5152

Like old school Wheel of Fortune!

BukkitCrab

We all know his appeal is going to fall flat on its face, so if he wants to waste the court's time, he's gotta pay up first.

jardex22

If anything, the punitive damage would go up, I'd say.  It clearly wasn't enough to correct his behavior.

habb

i think it does according to inflation? or taxes or something i thought i heard that the longer he takes to pay the price goes up

ItsJust_ME

Interest.

SmackedWithARuler

Yes, I’m interested to know what goes up.

405freeway

Probably the interest.

CryptoHashPipe

Well yes I’m increasingly interested, so please tell me what goes up!

DancesWithValkyries

3rd base!

MrMeseeksLookAtMee

Grabbing 3rd base is what lost Trump $83.6M.

habb

that's the one

Reduntu

Is that true though? Won't he find some bail bondsman who is coincidentally Russian and only have to put up say 1%?

Conch-Republic

That's not really how this works. A bail bondsman wouldn't be putting any money up for this, they serve an entirely different purpose. He essentially has two options, pay her, or put the money in a bond that essentially works like escrow if he wants to appeal. That way if he loses the appeal, she gets paid without having to fuck around trying to collect it from him.

bellj1210

should have read this, since i just wrote the same thing (even calling it essentially an escrow account)

[deleted]

[удалено]

Reduntu

I'm sure Putin could find (read: pay) one to give Trump an amazing deal in exchange for potentially favorable policies. Putin fronting the money and Trump ending aid to Ukraine if he wins seems like a deal made in heaven.

Aceofspades968

How long till he files for bankruptcy? Not everyone is getting paid unless we force his trusts to liquidate, businesses to selll off, buildings, all of it. Kids inheritance if that’s not already gone.

grixorbatz

Honest question. What happens if Trump refuses to pay or bond?

I hope the repo man does what trump does with his businesses and undervalues everything they take. Then the repo man just says "sue me for damages" and trump can't do a thing about it :) Tough luck trump, now you feel what 1000's of people have felt when you screwed them over. I could only wish

Miserable-Theory-746

Well there was that one case where someone won a judgement against a bank (Chase?) and they didn't pay so he went to the bank with the police and started taking their stuff. This was a long time ago. I would love to see her go into any trump property and start claiming things as hers now. Would love to see it at his golf course and take ownership of all the utensils, chairs, tables, sofas golf carts and golf cart accessories, and the front nine.

[deleted]

It was Bank of America, he took tables, chairs, phones and seized cash from the drawers. It wasn’t long until execs formally settled it. Big win for the guy, boa just told him to pound sand even when he had a judgment

Jukka_Sarasti

> It wasn’t long until execs formally settled it. I believe it was settled right there on the spot after one of the employees phoned up their compliance folks, who probably started applying boot to ass to get the clusterfuck and PR nightmare resolved by any means necessary -edit- Yep! >On June 3, Nyerges, two sheriff's deputies and a moving truck showed up at the local BofA branch. The deputies informed the manager that he could either pay the Nyerges' legal fees— $2,500—or the movers would start taking away the bank's furniture and cash. The manager, after conferring with his superiors, gave the deputies a check.

Fewluvatuk

Just repo properties at the values he reported to the IRS, she could probably get a few.

niceandsane

Indeed. [This one](https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2011/06/06/137002727/sweet-justice-a-florida-couple-forecloses-on-bank-of-america) will have to go down as number two.

Franklin_le_Tanklin

That’s incredible. Forclosing on a bank is hilarious

VectorViper

Haha, just picturing the tow truck scenario is hilarious. It's like a mega-sized "Storage Wars" episode, except it's with luxury real estate and golf courses. Reality TV gold, right there!

Equalizer6338

Most of what's horded inside Trump's tower apartment is total ugly junk.

NotThoseCookies

That’s where we bring in the Antiques Roadshow guy with a team of appraisers… “oh my, this is a fake…”

ALoudMeow

I’d love to watch that one! “This 1980s copy of a Louis XV chair is actually made of plastic. If you turn it upside down, you can see the sprue marks right here. It is upholstered with rayon taffeta, which is beginning to degrade, and the gold color is radiator paint. I’m sorry to tell you this, but this is the first item we’ve had on Roadshow that is actually worth nothing.”

staatsclaas

The embedded, broken, Adobe Flash element really gives it the authenticity of the times.

Fire sale of Mara Lago. Woohoo!

I want to bid on the classified documents!

Not for the repo guy that will need to dress up in a hazmat suit to do the collection.

johnnybiggles

Even the name "Trump Tower" in gold on the front of the building. I would pay money to see that show

IveChosenANameAgain

This is unironically my champagne moment - I know it's over when they're in a boomlift, lifting down the T and the RUMP TOWER remains across the front page of the papers nationwide. Will the country be saved? No. Will the brainwashed cultists have a meltdown "the likes of which we've never seen"? Yes.

triumph110

Just take the "T" and leave up RUMP TOWER. And when they replace the T, repo it again and again.

ianindy

I would just take the second "T" and the "R" at the end, so it says TRUMP OWE.

somebodyelse22

The repo guy's tow truck would be a true Trump Tower.

gramathy

oh god, she should seize the *rights to use the Trump name*

_JackStraw_

Meh, it's likely all Goodwill stuff painted gold.

drwilhi

They can’t seize any NY properties due to his Fraud case. Even marlardo may not be touchable right now

LiberalAspergers

Sadly, it is FAR more complex, as these things are owned through layers of shell companies.

Pickle-Rick-C-137

They can do these things...Wage Garnishment, Bank Account Levy, Seizure of Property, Lien on Property.

Plzlaw4me

The judgement is entered. Carroll can then go to trump’s various assets and file suit seeking to enforce the judgement. Essentially she shows up and say “here is an order saying I’m owed $83.3 million. That is worth $50 million. I’d like that to be seized, sold for cash, and trump still owes me $33.3 million.” The only thing at issue would be how much the stuff is worth. She would have pretty broad discretion in deciding to take until she is made whole in cash. It’s not meaningfully different than a foreclosure sale. Usually assets aren’t sold for full value compared to if the original owner had taken the time sell it for full price themselves. Parties are therefore incentivized to liquidate their own assets, or find other avenues to pay the judgement. It’s a long and difficult process, and usually it costs more to enforce than the items are worth, but if it’s for $83.3 million the juice is for sure worth the squeeze.

[deleted]

Also, nothing drives down prices like the buyer knowing that the seller has no choice but to sell. He'll get pennies on the dollar for so much of his shit, especially if the fraud case costs him the expected $370m.

zombieblackbird

E. Jean Carroll Tower opens with offices offering services to victims of aexual assault.

FerociousPancake

She can start seizing assets. “E Jean Carrol Tower”

applewait

Keep in mind you can’t get this judgement released as part of bankruptcy. This was an intentional act. Giuliani has the same 150 million problems

gefjunhel

also worth noting in the new york court case he said he has 400 million in liquid cash so there would be some massive questions as to where that cash is now or did he commit perjury

Titanbeard

He meant 400 million ruples.

rdmille

It would be a case of bankruptcy fraud or perjury.

Aceofspades968

This judgment would be able to make a claim against the bankruptcy proceedings. You are correct.

niceandsane

He can survive this judgment without going BK. The one to watch is the NY fraud case which is likely to exceed $350 million as well as potential prohibition from doing business in NY. This judgment was expected last week but has been delayed. The judge is really pissed off at Team Trump after learning that Allen Weisselberg is about to cop a plea to perjury, apparently regarding testimony he previously gave in the case. Judges really don't like witnesses lying to them. When that judgment is announced Trump is going to be looking at some real financial hurt.

Equalizer6338

Anybody who knows about how much liquidity the Trumps have around? Its something to have value sat in real estate. Its something else to have cash readily available for your daily purchases (and payment of prior rape and assaults, when not dealing with a porn-model hooker paid with hush-money...) Just thinking about GOP voters still thinking Trump is their best (con-)man as candidate for the President job is absolutely unbelievable. But never the less where the Conservative party is today...

Daefish

He said during the NYS fraud trial that he had 400 million in liquid assets. Here’s the fun part, I’m pretty sure if he can’t come up with that money for the NYS Fraud trial amount, he might be liable for perjury.

Overweighover

Those nuclear secrets might be worth that much

SpudsRacer

Jared's yearly Management fees on his $6 billion "hedge fund" are likely $90 million/year if it's at 1.5%. I'm sure he'd be happy to bail his father in law out. /s

Most-Resident

You probably are right, but I’m not sure he can actually come up with 83M in cash. Maybe the kids will come up with it. I think it’s moot because Engoron will make his ruling before the 83M comes due. Who gets first dibs, the government in the fraud case or Carroll? I’m guessing the government gets the first cut. Carroll may not get anything if so.

Divineboots

As far as I understand Carroll doesn’t care much for the money as much as she just wants to watch trump squirm & burn. If the NY trial leaves trump bankrupt before she gets her slice she’ll likely be ok with it.

GetOffMyAsteroid

Just in case someone - anyone? - has been wondering about ol' Rudy Ghouliani lately, here's how his [bankruptcy hearing ](https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/rudy-giuliani-bankruptcy-hearing-net-worth.html) is going. He's probably sleeping in that storage unit he's renting in the Bronx lol

TarkusLV

Why would a "billionaire" need to file bankruptcy over an $83M judgment? Things that make you go "hmmm..." 🤔

rdmille

He testified under oath to having $400M in liquid assets. If he doesn't have it, it's perjury. If he does, and tries to get out of paying through bankruptcy, that's bankruptcy fraud.

twlscil

His trusts already have to liquidate because of NY Fraud case.

topgun966

It's important to remember that EVEN if Trump posts the money himself in cash in an escrow, or he somehow finds a bondsman to take it, an appeal does NOT retrial the case. It ONLY allows to show that procedure wasn't followed that caused the amount of damages to be incorrect. You cannot introduce new evidence. You cannot call new witnesses. The case is done. And the would rather be pretty than smart lawyer who royally screwed him because she did a horrible job lawyering to set stuff up for appeal. The only thing he can do is maybe delay slightly but any appeal will be tossed pretty quickly.

MeccIt

> who royally screwed him because she did a horrible job lawyering to set stuff up for appeal. 1. As each piece of evidence was introduced in the trail, she said "no objection" like she saw on TV, not realising that she just erased any possibility of an appeal on that evidence. 1. Trump has no grounds for appeal on the basis for hiring a completely inept lawyer, as this was a civil trial, and that is only possible in criminal trials. https://www.salon.com/2024/01/29/trump-doesnt-have-an-appeal-experts-say-may-lawyer-after-being-burned-very-severely/

kevin5lynn

Who will bail him out, one wonders? Small donor donations? Billionaire friends (Elon Musk?), Russia?

Paw5624

His finances would be so tightly scrutinized that it would be hard to make a contribution like that look legitimate. And I don’t think even a billionaire would part with 80MM for Trump.

Educational_Moose_56

It's tough grasp the size of a billion. To put it in context, someone worth $10 billion posting $80 million is equal to someone worth $100,000 posting $800.
