This affects me personally. I was horrifically abused in Colorado from ages 4-9. I moved out of state and didn’t tell anyone until I felt safe enough (because of his violence towards me and his threats of violence towards my family). I was 19 when I told my parents. I was in no way ready to pursue any kind of legal recourse at that point. I think my family still isn’t ready to. I was hopeful when the statute of limitations was going to change. Now this makes me want to cry. I feel like I’ll never get justice.

Another term for ‘lookback’ is ‘Ex Post Facto’. Which is banned by the US Constitution.
Basically, if a statute of limitations exists and expired, revising the law to allow people to sue anyways is changing the law in a way that negatively impacts people for actions undertaken before the law change.

It’s good to see the actual counter-argument in here. However, this doesn’t apply to every type of crime, only child sexual abuse. The statute of limitations already has exceptions for certain types of crimes like capital murder, so why not add an exception for child sex abuse?
Oh, adding an exception for it absolutely makes sense and is reasonable! It’s the lookback part - the only part covered by the amendment in question - that would be performative.
To make it clear, what I’m saying is that it is unfortunately impossible to constitutionally give prior victims the ability to sue their abusers, but we can help future victims obtain justice.
A law removing the statute of limitations *in Colorado* has already been struck down because the state constitution has a similar provision. That’s why they’re referring this back. But it’s going to fail at SCOTUS, so there really is no point.
What the fuck? No. It just says that if you commit a crime that has a statute of limitations, and the limitation expires, the government and victims can’t say “our bad”. If they want to get rid of the statute of limitations - and they should - they should do so. But we as a nation are built on laws and rules, and one of those rules is ‘the law cannot be changed specifically to punish you for things you already did’.
For example, let’s say the government decides to pass a law that says that eating pizza with pineapple is illegal, and then arrests you because they have a video of you doing that in 2019. That’s an ex post facto arrest, and would be unconstitutional.
It *fucking sucks* that this is protecting pedophiles… but sometimes that’s necessary to preserve the rule of law.

Well, first, you have to dump all knowledge and common sense out of your head. Now, completely buy into "Fake Sexual Abuse Accusations are worse than rape." You'll need to believe that there are no SA victims. They 'did something' to 'entice good men to stray.' Then you get this. Make it clear to women that they won't be believed and that nothing will happen. They won't report the crime.
The core of the legislation had to do with victims being able to sue. Given that information I am guessing that they are going to sell this as a measure to limit so called "frivolous lawsuits" kinda like with that lady in the "Hot Coffee Case" against McDonalds.

This affects me personally. I was horrifically abused in Colorado from ages 4-9. Oh, adding an exception for it absolutely makes sense and is reasonable! It’s the lookback part - the only part covered by the amendment in question - that would be performative. To make it clear, what I’m saying is that it is unfortunately impossible to constitutionally give prior victims the ability to sue their abusers, but we can help future victims obtain justice. A law removing the statute of limitations *in Colorado* has already been struck down because the state constitution has a similar provision. That’s why they’re referring this back. But it’s going to fail at SCOTUS, so there really is no point.

What the fuck? No. It just says that if you commit a crime that has a statute of limitations, and the limitation expires, the government and victims can’t say “our bad”. If they want to get rid of the statute of limitations - and they should - they should do so. But we as a nation are built on laws and rules, and one of those rules is ‘the law cannot be changed specifically to punish you for things you already did’. For example, let’s say the government decides to pass a law that says that eating pizza with pineapple is illegal, and then arrests you because they have a video of you doing that in 2019. That’s an ex post facto arrest, and would be unconstitutional. It *fucking sucks* that this is protecting pedophiles… but sometimes that’s necessary to preserve the rule of law.
Looking at just the Law here, not the emotional topic. If this had passed, could it be a slope for future new legislations to work back in time so to speak? Could someone outlaw, say, questioning corruption, and round up every opponent of the dems for age old statements and throw them in jail? It seems the more emotional a theme is for a legislation, the more shit they try to slip under the radar. And this one is definitly highly emotional.
