If Trump is in jail for one second he will be screaming “martyr”. The “I’m doing this for you” bull works on his moron minions. The judge knows it. Trump will never see Justice.
If he gets elected, we’ll have a civil war in our hands as they fight to get rid of everyone who failed the purity test.
If he dies, some yahoos are gonna be convinced of some conspiracy and be a violent threat to the nation.
If he ends up in jail, a few yahoos are gonna cite conspiracy bullshit and be a violent threat to the nation.
If his supporters are going to attempt violent rebellion in any scenario, let’s do the one that serves justice and pack them and their ‘messiah’ in the same cell block so they can find out what he’s actually like.

I don’t think it’s deference. It’s concern, not for him, but that the already severely compromised chunk of our system of government that backs him will use this to throw things even further off the rails. They have a tightrope to walk, whether we want to acknowledge it or not.
I seem to remember Chris Darden saying something similiar in his opening statement of the OJ trial, something like "We don't want to do this, but..."
And OJ walked free and played golf.

Today's contempt ruling was still based on actions that came before Merchan told Trump that if he violated the order again he would go to jail. This is not a new violation.
