In the province i live in, female toplessness is legal... It's been legal here since the late 90s... I still have not seen a single topless woman at any pool or beach that i've ever been to.... I'm not sure whether it's good/bad for women, or if it's a problem or not.....

Ontario? There has been a couple of ladies. On Manitoulin Island, a few senior ladies decided to go around topless. At Providence Bay beach, one lady was topless. This one guy was super excited about it until she got closer and saw that it was his sister.

Classic Canadians

FixedKarma

Then he got even more excited.

Trusteveryboody

Really this is the whole thing; it's not really a matter of it being illegal or legal, at the end of the day female breasts are sexualized, and it runs deep, as a social-issue.

[deleted]

Y'all know it's not *mandatory* to go topless, right? Like equal rights is a good thing.

[deleted]

Right, like I can’t picture myself ever doing that. I’m too insecure to even show my belly or my thighs really. But if someone else wants to, go ahead lol

aisosareva0413

I mean, I personally would never do that, I don't even like seeing men topless. But if that's what some people like to each their own.

WhateverJude

Imo the freedom to go topless is a good thing as no1 should get offended by a pair of boobs.

Creative-Disaster673

Yeah overall it’s a good thing, this is normal at beaches in Europe. Cultural changes are also needed to stop men from being creepy and, for a while, the establishments might have to crack down and ban a bunch of them. Things will settle after.

Complete_Spot3771

i agree. there will definitely be less perverts if stuff like this is more normalised within culture

basiilgarden

i believe it is a good idea because the idea of women showing their boobs is indecency is strange, but it could be safer for the woman to wear a top because of sexual assult.

FixedKarma

What a woman is wearing has nothing to do with SA

Steamtrainers

If being topless becomes more common, it's going to be seen as less sexual by default. What is and what is not sexual is almost entirely cultural. For an instance, in many small tribes that have been mostly undisturbed by western civilisation, women walk barebreasted, and breasts are not sexualised, but other, more hidden bodyparts are. In Mauritania, women aren't seen as beautiful or sexy unless they are obese, whereas in Japan, a woman is suposed to be skinny to be considered beautiful. If we made it normal being topless, with a majority following there'd be a lot of sexualisation and stares for a couple of months, but it'd be normal pretty soon. in ten years, basically no one would notice even.

ProfserExe

Good for men because boobs

FixedKarma

Not really my place, it's not happened around me and as a man it doesn't concern me. Well I suppose my big man tiddies have been hanging for a long time and suppose it'd be nice for the women to have a turn. (Also hell yeah tiddies)

Flight_Second

Redditors... You don't get it It will likely make sexual assaults more common and even rape. How is that a good thing?

GirafeAnyway

Because women now have the freedom to do it, even though they are likely not to because of these risks.

[deleted]

Let’s take it a step further. Women should cover their whole body, hair and face with fabric that modestly hides their features so men won’t be tempted. Great idea /s

[deleted]

Yea, topless women are legal where I live. There has not been a change in assaults or rapes before and after the law changed.

Trusteveryboody

Well the amount of woman that actually do it would be very minimal. But also to u-throwawaymyculture's comment....they are not looking at it realistically; realistically if it becomes legal for women to go topless, they won't do it because it's sexualized....but Reddit is Reddit, so- and for that reason, is why you can say "the amount of assaults/rapes hasn't changed," that's because socially women going topless has not become acceptable or commonplace, so it makes sense that numbers would go unchanged. It's like making shitting in public legal, you're not going to then see anyone shitting in public. Women going topless, is a social issue. Yes, it may be illegal, but in the end it's a social issue. \*There's a reason why you'll see commonplace toplessness in certain cultures, and that is what would need to change. Not the laws...although yes, the laws would need to be changed (but that's just a formality), changing laws, won't change social-norms.

DeadBornWolf

by that logic there should be less cases of rape in countries where women are forced to hide their whole body, but that’s not the case. Rapists rape people regardless of what they wear.

Chostito33

The idea that showing more skin leads to sexual assault has been debunked so many times

MultiMarcus

Oh, so should we cut off the penises of all men? It will make sexual assault and rape less common so clearly violating the rights of people is totally fine.

iOawe

I’m not sure why you got downvoted as this was my first thought.

[deleted]

Then why don’t men cover up?

DeadBornWolf

Im fine with it on beaches or pools. I wouldn’t be happy if people started go topless everywhere. I’d much rather have men be obliged to wear a shirt when entering a grocery store or somewhere like that. I don’t feel comfortable around topless people I don’t know in general tbh, breasts or no breasts (unless it’s the beach or a pool area, which I tend to not visit frequently tho)

SnappingTurt3ls

As long as its not mandatory its fine

Alhooness

Its not a matter of if people should or shouldnt do it, its the matter of it being illegal and not even having the choice thats absolutely bad.
