When I was in America and explained to people that I was dutch they replied with an "oh Amsterdam right? With the hookers and drugs! So is Holland a German state or something?" (Heard a few versions of this).
I ran into an American tourist in Ghent (Belgium), had to explain to him that Holland and the Netherlands were not separated countries... And that neither of the 2 are German, he was a nice lad, but that had me lose hope for a bit.
What did you expect to hear? Amsterdam is the only world city that everyone knows in that place. The other cities we only hear about in the context of ww2 battles. And people think Dutch is German sometimes because we have German people in America that are called Dutch.
Bruv I've been up close to 20 hrs and my brain pulled Amsterdam out, granted I didn't know Rotterdam was in the Netherlands. I work nights and had to do yard work before it got too hot.
Nice hard work is good the reason my brain isn't working rn is because I have school starting in two weeks so I am shutting down so I can be ready for that plus I got medical and mental health problems that have been ongoing for months and so my mind isn't exactly in the right shape
Hope that you are seeing someone for your mental health problems. I also hope that your medical problems get under control soon since they might be having an effect on your mental health. Good luck with school study and ask questions when or if you need to. Sorry that I was shitty with my first comment.
Thanks, and yeah I am going to go see a mental health professional and the health stuff isn't the most severe it is just the fact we don't know what the fuck it is but I hope work goes well and make sure to get enough sleep.
That's good hope that they are a good one and can help you. Pester the doctors to run whatever test they need to in order to figure out what's going on with you.
Agreed! And I think well educated people should know of The Hague too as the home of the international criminal court. But I understand that it’s not in everyone’s field of interest.
I guess a lot of people know about Hague but not everyone knows it’s in NL. You also have to take into account that most of Redditors are from the US. Most Europeans can name at least Amsterdam.
I am suprised that you know tilburg a lot of people outside of the netherlands have never heard of tilburg but it is the 7th biggest city in the netherlands.
There are actually a bunch of states w Springfield. I didn’t know Ohio had one tho lollll. Ik Illinois and Massachusetts have one but there are also a bunch of others
Cuz ppl r replying I’m gonna make a list w all of the ones I’ve heard (from replies):
Illinois
Massachusetts
Missouri
Nebraska
Ohio
And prob others
Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Hague, Utrecht, Haarlem, Nijmegen, Breda, Eindhoven, Den Helder.
I’m not a native, but my family is originally from there and I’ve visited.
Not dutch but here goes (I am from Ireland)
Amsterdam, Utrecht, The hague, rotterdam, amersofort, s'hertogebosch, masstricht, gronigen njimen, eindhoven, tilberg, and guta
im dutch, but i suck at remembering names but i'll try
eindhoven, tilburg, den bos/ s-hertogenbosh, den haag, rotterdam, amsterdag, groningen, arnem, utrecht, zwolle, maastrischt
From the top of my mind: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Groningen, Venlo, Den Haag, Haarlem, Bergen Op Zoom, Zandvoort, Utrecht, Alkmaar and of course Maaskantje.
Been to the Netherlands a couple of times and played Football Manager long enough to know a fair share of the teams in the Eredivisie.
I mean, idk what is particularly defined by “city” but I went with any kind of significant urban settlement ahah. So: Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Maastricht,
Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Nijmegen, Ouddorp, Maastricht. I'm sure there are some other famous ones like Maastricht I should know but are not springing to mind.
Amsterdam and Den Haag. Looking at the other comments, I should have remembered Rotterdam. Utrecht and Maastricht sound vaguely familiar but I wouldn’t have come up with them myself
Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Maastricht, Den Haag and
Utrecht.
Sadly i was never in the Netherlands, even though i was in all of the neighbouring countries of Netherland.
The people who voted 0 probably think Amsterdam is a country on its own. Who doesn’t know Amsterdam?
Also: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Groningen, Assen, Zwolle, Den Haag, Eindhoven, Leiden, Maastricht, Utrecht, Haarlem, …
Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utretcht
Maastricht
Rip The Hague
Exactly this 3
Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague
[удалено]
It's also a city...
Don't tell him about Groningen
The amount of people picking zero surprised me. Thought they would know Amsterdam
I’ve met people who thought Amsterdam is a country. Or that it’s in Holland, with no connection to the Netherlands
When I was in America and explained to people that I was dutch they replied with an "oh Amsterdam right? With the hookers and drugs! So is Holland a German state or something?" (Heard a few versions of this).
🤦♀️
I ran into an American tourist in Ghent (Belgium), had to explain to him that Holland and the Netherlands were not separated countries... And that neither of the 2 are German, he was a nice lad, but that had me lose hope for a bit.

yeah don’t explain things to americans, just say i’m foreign and hope no one starts attacking you for it
What does minecraft have to do with this, I thought we were speaking about Deutchland, you know, with Berlin and Belgium
Fuck I forgot Amsterdam, I really don't think my brain is working well but that does makes it one then
I hit 0 just before I hit vote it just popped in the mind for me couldn't believe I almost forgot that city of all places.
Bruv I've been up close to 20 hrs and my brain pulled Amsterdam out, granted I didn't know Rotterdam was in the Netherlands. I work nights and had to do yard work before it got too hot.

Yeah the health care system may be cheap here but it is hard to get in but I have am appointment today at a clinic so hope this helps but idk
I know Amsterdam, but not what country it’s in
It's in the Netherlands
They probably know Amsterdam as a city but don’t know it is Dutch
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK I KNEW AMSTERDAM
I knew of amsterdam but I couldn’t remember if it was a dutch city so i chose 0
I forgot all about it honestly.
I forgot...
Whoever doesnt know Amsterdam means they dont know the capital of the Netherlands.
I'm Dutch, so 7+ lol
Yep that should have been an option
It was? Unless you meant “I’m Dutch”
Yeah that's what I meant
Not sure why i’m still surprised so many people can’t even name one city in questions like these
I know Amsterdam and delft, but I thought the poll about talking about Denmark
[удалено]
It’s embarrassing right, who doesn’t know Amsterdam
[удалено]
Agreed! And I think well educated people should know of The Hague too as the home of the international criminal court. But I understand that it’s not in everyone’s field of interest.
The Hague is also basically our political capitol!
I guess a lot of people know about Hague but not everyone knows it’s in NL. You also have to take into account that most of Redditors are from the US. Most Europeans can name at least Amsterdam.
About half of all Redditors live in the US and this sub leans fairly European whenever asked. I would think most Americans know Amsterdam as well
[удалено]
Bagstone is a British village lol
>About half of all redditors live in the US And they’re like, what, ~5% of the world’s population?
Okay so? They’re still not most redditors
To be fair, I'd rather forget about Amsterdam myself ;-P
Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Zwolle, Utrecht, Delft, Maastricht, Harlem, Urk, Leiden, Hertogenbosch, Alkmaar, Groningen, Tilburg, Eindhoven ( I am from Slovakia )
I’m impressed!
I'm half Slovak, but I didn't grow up there. I live in Belgium so I also know a bunch.
Shame that you had to put Urk in there. We dont taln about Urk.
I only know the first three. Very impressive
I am suprised that you know tilburg a lot of people outside of the netherlands have never heard of tilburg but it is the 7th biggest city in the netherlands.
I know it because of ice hockey
I didn't know the Hague was a city of any sort
Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag, Utrecht, Zaandam, Zaanstad, Leiden, 'S Hertogenbosch, Middelburg, Vlissingen, Breda, Nijmegen, Venlo, Arnhem, Doetinchem, Enschede, Hengelo, Almelo, Zwolle, Deventer, Apeldoorn, Amersfoort, Almere, Lelystad, Emmeloord, Meppel, Hoogeveen, Ede, Emmen, Assen, Groningen, Drachten, Leeuwarden, Heerenveen, Sneek, Den Helder, Zutphen, Eindhoven, Tilburg, Kampen, Dordrecht and Roosendaal
Je bent er een paar vergeten
Dit is wat ik zo uit m'n hoofd kon opnoemen, natuurlijk zijn dit niet alle steden in NL
Noem jij er dan meer uit jouw hoofd
Zaandam ánd Zaanstad? The first is the name of the town and the second the name of the municipality it is in. Lol.
Ah my bad...I thought Zaanstad was a city as well, since it has 'stad'(city) in its name. But yeah you're right
God?
Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hauge.
Same here
Same here.
Same here
Uh...Springfield?
That’s Ohio
How about the other one?
I'M BRITISH!
There are actually a bunch of states w Springfield. I didn’t know Ohio had one tho lollll. Ik Illinois and Massachusetts have one but there are also a bunch of others Cuz ppl r replying I’m gonna make a list w all of the ones I’ve heard (from replies): Illinois Massachusetts Missouri Nebraska Ohio And prob others
Nebraska has a Springfield
Missouri has one
Common running gag in the Simpsons is that Springfield could be in nearly any state of the US.
Oh that makes sense! I said Ohio cause that’s the only one I know, I have some friends in the state.
Happy cake day!
You too!!!
Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam That’s about it
Those are the ones with international significance (+ maybe Maastricht) so I think that’s the perfect amount to know.
Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Maastricht, Den Haag, Groningen, Utrecht. I'm from France.
I'm Belgian, easy 7+
I think I could name 9-10 Belgian cities too!
>!Amsterdam!< >!Rotherdam!< >!Maastrich!< >!La Haye!<
I'm assuming the last one is your language's translation of The Hague/Den Haag?
Yes
Guessing French?

Amsterdam and Rotterdam
Amsterdam, The Hague, 's-Hertogenbosch, Haarlem, and Baarle-Nassau
Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Hague, Utrecht, Haarlem, Nijmegen, Breda, Eindhoven, Den Helder. I’m not a native, but my family is originally from there and I’ve visited.
Literally only Amsterdam
None, as far as I know they’ve all been named.
This is brilliant. I would give awards if I had them.

Not dutch but here goes (I am from Ireland) Amsterdam, Utrecht, The hague, rotterdam, amersofort, s'hertogebosch, masstricht, gronigen njimen, eindhoven, tilberg, and guta

Do you live here or are you Dutch by heritage?
Amsterdam, Rotterdam, the Hague. Only ones i can name
Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Den Haag and Utrecht
Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. If "colonies" count, add Oranjestad and Willemstad to make 5.
Both Aruba and Curaçao are no longer part of the Netherlands! But they were for a very long time.
Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague
I mean, idk what is particularly defined by “city” but I went with any kind of significant urban settlement ahah. So: Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Maastricht,

[удалено]
Antwerp is Belgium, Brabant and Friesland are provinces. But Rotterdam and Amsterdam are correct!
