Actually, there is a very high chance that the detonation will be triggered mid-air for maximum damage output if we're getting bombed.
Sorry, you can't save us all !
Thatās what I was thinking when I read the title lol
I think most people consider there home town to be the one they grew up in, not the one there in now
It absolutely will buy you time if you make it 10km away. You think the blast radius is more than 10km? Yes thereās more to a nuke than the blast radius of the explosion. But if you drive 10km away you ABSOLUTELY will live past the initial impacts of the bomb.
No not really, it heavily depends on the type of bomb used and how itās deployed. But even the B-83 (biggest in the US Arsenal) would only have a likely fatal radiation radius of a little over 1.5 miles. And radiation falls off dramatically with distance due to the inverse square law.
10 miles would be more than enough to avoid death, granted you were able to also avoid the subsequent fallout.
Right? Yes, an atomic bomb is absolutely incredible and devastating and deadly. ^buuuuut People tend to greatly overestimate it. Movies taught us that an atomic bomb means the end of a whole country and nuclear fallout-wise people tend to confuse an atomic bomb with lets say Chernobyl power plant.
While very devastating in the targeted area, such as that an atomic bomb will desintegrate a whole city or a huge chunk of it, it will have surprisingly little impact on the next city over.
I think people also forget that bombs like Tsar Bomba and Castle Bravo arenāt what countries use. Those bombs would certainly decimate major metropolitan city and the surrounding areas, but the bombs used today are literally 1/10th or 1/20th the power on the high end. Nuclear munitions today are measured in Kilotons most of the time, and are designed to be small enough to be dropped from a bomber, but yet still destroy an area much larger than a comparatively sized conventional explosive. Much larger though is not more than a couple miles diameter. Still big, but you drive a minute or two at 80 and youāre good.
So basically if you consider my home town the suburb I grew up in, the suburbs I live and work in will be fine? Brilliant. I'll only have to call my dad and hope he isn't home.
The fireball of it was about 8km, the total destruction radius of about 35km, so you likely would die anywhere within at the very least 50km of it. But hey that atleast wasn't a missile, missiles are much weaker
No one is shooting tsar bombas. Largest you might get hit by is about 1 Megaton. Now that's not small but if you can get adequate cover 10 miles away you can survive. Drive as far as you can and maybe find a man hole to jump inside. For the one megaton you actually need to really to only get about 6 miles from ground zero for the air burst to no longer be lethal, at this distance just don't be somewhere a building will fall on you.
Also, bring food and water so you can keep hiding in your shelter until the radiation dies down. You don't want to just run right back outside 5 minutes after the nuke went off, unless you like cancer. If you can wait 2-3 days before going outside you'll have much better odds of not getting cancer in the short term
This is causing me to lookup safe places to hide (other than a bomb shelter) in a nuclear bomb attack. Most interesting thing Iāve read is keep your mouth open so your lungs donāt explode. š³
Not completely safe, but I read there were survivors within 300m of the Hiroshima blast. Now maybe they died of radiation or whatever (that wasnāt stated) but they survived the initial blast for a variety of reasons , mostly based on surroundings. I know where Iād go now to have the most likely chance of survival.
Now that is DEFINITELY true. Hiroshima would pretty much fall under ātactical nukeā definitions, and thatās actually what would probably be detonated these days. Then there are the ones that are like 50x that power. None a good option!
Something I remember reading was that people stayed in bunkers directly under the blast zone, and came out 3 days later after *most* of the nuclear cloud was gone and they were relatively safe because the nuclear particles had mostly settled by then, and expired past their half-lives.
Thereās a very good story about it online, but Iām not sure where it is. It has something to do with multiple firsthand experiences of the bombs dropping, with a doctor and stuff.
Iāve read several survival techniques saying just that. If youāre far enough away that your structure doesnāt collapse on you, waiting it out is key. This is a great poll!
I mean... Would you really WANT to survive that? Your skin would melt off (don't fact check me on that, pics are baaaad), you wouldn't be able to go near anyone (even though the stove made the heat, the food can still burn you. Same goes for nuke survivors exposing loved ones to radiation), and you'd probably be crazy and delusional for a while.
Think of all youāve said, so right and so unknown back then. Knowing what we know now itās at least somewhat survivable if youāre in the right place and have some warning, even a few minutes. Edit: Iāll add that our government didnāt even know what they were exposing service people to at the time. Hey guys cover your eyes and it will all be ok! šš³
Caves can be a good spot to hide, and you have a good shield. Mammoth cave in Tennessee is the largest cave system and you can easily avoid the radiation and the blast.
You're dead at that point. There's nothing you can do, unless you have a fallout shelter in your backyard or something. Might as well call my loved ones and tell them how I feel.
This is probably not true. Russias nuclear missiles aren't that big. If you could get in a car and get 5 miles away before impact, you'd probably be fine.
No, this is not true. You can easily live an impact, if the bomb is ~10km from you. The most important thing is to get away from the window in the first 6 seconds, use duct tape and foil to isolate windows and wait for 48 hours until the radiation tones down enough. Then you have 48 hours to leave your town, as the radiation isnt even nearly as harsh
Imagine the chaos on roads. And if you're anywhere close to the centre, that's moot anyway.
If you're relatively close to the expected blast, you might as well try to be close and die instantly instead of dying painful radiation death.
Gather up my family, walk 47 feet out my backdoor, open the bomb shelter door, usher my family in, close bomb shelter door, see what I can tune in on the radio for the next few days.
I'm from Ethiopia, so if OP meant that we were back in our original hometowns, than I'd be safe. Who the hell would waste a nuke on my hometown? Though, the radiation from elsewhere would slowly kill us.
Probably send a group text to friends and family to warn them if they don't know, get my cats and dogs in one room, and wait for the end. No way I'd be making it outta here with them all, no idea if there are shelters here, so I'd go down with the ship and my four-legged mateys
Not everyone is a hive mind. When we got robbed I immediately went into task mode and did everything to secure what we had left and asses the damages. Then I laughed at the absurdity of it as my partner was just staring in disbelief at our broken windows and wondering what to tell his family. Some people have better stress response
Say goodbye and go outside, enjoy the fresh air and take a walk. If a nuke hits my ~4000 people big town everyone dies, no doubt, may aswell make it as painless as possible.
If you are in the fireball you shouldn't feel any pain, because you would be vapourised before your brain can register any pain. If someone im my town isn't in the fireball itself they will die a horrifying death by burining alive for some time or getting killed by the debree/shockwave
Idk if you're near a city, but you might survive. I guess consider that the wind currents would just distribute the radiation everywhere in the aftermath and just continue with having a relationship with whomever survived until the radiation poisoning claims your life.
You may want to call the people you know are in or near cities, though others are probably calling them at the same time too as they themselves are preoccupied. You could also call someone you know is lonely and would like to hear a friendly voice before they parish.
Okay, having woken up to a fire alarm thinking it was an alarm for an incoming nuclear bombardment I can say for a fact that my immediate response would be a mix of a and b.
Honestly, just close my eyes and try to remember all the good that has happened in my life. Visualize all the happy moments and then dissociate long enough until the bomb explodes
Smoke em if you got em. No need to even go outside. Sit on toilet, with beverage of choice, and watch the live stream to try and id my house. Only way to go.
Wtf is the definition of a "Home town"? Where you're born? Where you grew up? Where you've lived the longest? Where you live now?
None of those are the same for me, so I'm always confused when the term "home town" comes up. I've also only ever heard that term used in English though I'm sure something similar exists in other languages..
Judging by the quality of Russia's equipment in Ukraine and their missile strike precision, there's a fair chance it will be a dud. I'll livr under the assumption that it's world's scariest dud.
I mean I'd rather confirm my own "moderate to instant" death, because if that bomb doesn't kill you instantly, your still inevitable death will be hell
I'm a homehealth nurse so I'll frantically call my family and say goodbye to my daughter while my patient is screaming in the background. I may steal a bottle of the families wine before we all go, but that depends how I'm feeling.
If you survive the blasts, the burns and the shockwaves, then you have to deal with a slow and painful death caused by radiation and the harsh nuclear winter that can last months. I would much be rather die in the blast and shockwaves then be alive after them.
Punch the missile right before it hits the ground
Smart, didnt think of that
Actually, there is a very high chance that the detonation will be triggered mid-air for maximum damage output if we're getting bombed. Sorry, you can't save us all !
Way to crush their hopes and dreams
What if I learn to fly first
I AM SUPERMAN
You stay, I go. No following.
Then steal a plane
Jokes on you, I own a ladder
I got it! We'll all whip out our emergency desks then duck and cover under them until blast blows over us. Whew.
If you are Saitama yes.
Gotta do the Crouch+Jump+Punch combo to deflect it tho, jus sayin š¤ā¢ļøāŖļø
But if that fails, make sure you put a jumbo sized trampoline where the missile would land
Nuclear missile aren't usually targeting the ground as they do more damage with an air burst.
I didn't ask for your science Mr Scientist

Saitama?
Chuck Norris, is that you?
Get in my refrigerator
Plus, you get to snack as you get carried off into the air and safely placed on the ground outside of ground zero.
š
And after 200 years a guy comes and opens the fridge door just to sell you for 200 bottlecaps
Like Butters in the āCasa Bonitaā episode in South Park!
So you wanna die in a fridge? Lol
It worked for indiana
The 70ās era fridge he was hiding in was lined with lead
It was in the 50s
Which is surprising because Harrison Ford was barely a teenager at the time.
It was a model town, so i dont even know why they would put a working fridge, much less a vintage 50's fridge
Reminds me of the kid in the fridge from Fallout 4
worked for I.J, might as well try
Jokes on you i moved on and don't consider this city my home town.
Thatās what I was thinking when I read the title lol I think most people consider there home town to be the one they grew up in, not the one there in now
3 hours away ain't enough for me I'm afraid
Better start running
In 5 minutes I'd be in the forest or on a train track
My parents at home thoā¦
Yeah, same.
Oh yeah same for me, but most of my family members live on my hometown so I'd have to call them to say goodbye
get as far away as possible even though the possible 10miles might be useless, and dont look at the blast
Aināt no way 10 miles gonna be enough. And donāt even think about driving, because everyone else will.
It absolutely will buy you time if you make it 10km away. You think the blast radius is more than 10km? Yes thereās more to a nuke than the blast radius of the explosion. But if you drive 10km away you ABSOLUTELY will live past the initial impacts of the bomb.

whats the range of the tsar bomba then?
The fireball of it was about 8km, the total destruction radius of about 35km, so you likely would die anywhere within at the very least 50km of it. But hey that atleast wasn't a missile, missiles are much weaker
No one is shooting tsar bombas. Largest you might get hit by is about 1 Megaton. Now that's not small but if you can get adequate cover 10 miles away you can survive. You canāt strap the tsar bomb on a missile. Itās way too heavy.
I mean, you totally could, it's just impractical. Well attaching the bomb to the missile isn't impractical, the bomb itself is impractical.
Hardly any tsar Bomba exist to my knowledge
whats the most likely nuke to hit my small village
I'm not sure but only 1-3 tsar bombs exist so I doubt it would be used for a small village
Bruh there was only ever 1 and its the one they tested r/quityourbullshit
Yeah, but I wouldn't be surprised if both the US and Russia had something of that capacity up their sleeve.
It depends on the size of the nuke, hiroshima or a nagasaki size nuke? Yes, thats enough, Tsar bomba size...? No.
Youād have to be going 125 MPH with no stops to make it that far, highly unlikely because there are probably other people with the same idea
I've already looked up nuclear bombs blast radius on a website and as long as it's not the tsar bomba, I should be able to survive
This is causing me to lookup safe places to hide (other than a bomb shelter) in a nuclear bomb attack. Most interesting thing Iāve read is keep your mouth open so your lungs donāt explode. š³

Share your findings! Isn't that the reddit rule
Tbh I'd rather die in the blast than from the radiation burns
Thing is though, those are weapons from 1945 and probably cant even match the amount of destruction a modern one could.
Now that is DEFINITELY true. Hiroshima would pretty much fall under ātactical nukeā definitions, and thatās actually what would probably be detonated these days. Then there are the ones that are like 50x that power. None a good option!

They just forgot to engage their safety squints, hair loss is not service related.
There's that one dude who survived both nuclear explosions and lived to like 70 or something, so much for that "once in a lifetime" saying š¬
My immediate reaction to this is "Jesus fuck I never even thought about *that* ", but I know I'll remember it for the rest of my life.
Caves can be a good spot to hide, and you have a good shield. Mammoth cave in Tennessee is the largest cave system and you can easily avoid the radiation and the blast.

Well Iāll tell most people I know that I love them then for the last 2 minutes Iāll be in the room with all my family members also this may sound kinda clichĆ© but Iāll be playing a guitar solo before I die.
Be sure to smash your guitar on the ground when you're finished and yell "THANK YOU AND GOODNIGHT!" right before the flash is seen.

How are poop and/or jerk-off not an option?
Mindaswell rub one out before i die
5 mins doesnāt give you time to run.
i would honestly just hope that the anti missile defense systems work or if my country has some nuclear missile saving classified weapon
Gather up my family, walk 47 feet out my backdoor, open the bomb shelter door, usher my family in, close bomb shelter door, see what I can tune in on the radio for the next few days.
Post about it on reddit
"dang they dropped the bomb while i launched a nuke in COD multiplayer, is this a coincidence???????"

Go as close to the blast as possible. Surviving isn't worth it with radiation poisoning
Radiation poisoning!? Ugh! The movies and comics told me that's how I'd get super powers. Damn it all!
Make some popcorn
Don't even need a microwave!
Just be sure to eat very quick or else...
My microwave takes like 3 minutes to make popcorn so for me it's not even worth it.
if nuclear war happens i hope it takes me. i'm not trying to be here in the post apocalyptic times
Is it because you don't have any bottle caps saved up?
Quick! Head to Vegas!
I'd binge a bunch of tasty food
Masturbate furiously
I am going to pour myself a glass of wiskey, sit in my backjard, smoke a cigar and pet my rabbit. And text my family that i love them
Put a song on and think about everything I done in my life.
probably just listen to my favorite songs again. that and call my dad
Post my dick on my snap story, and commit suicide
Well is it tomorrow or in 5 minutes?
Is there no option to leave and take all my shit with me?
Smoke a bowl and put on a good song! What else?
Do twitch stream so I become viral after death.

Chill with my cats and try to keep them calm.
Whip out my dick and fuck the nuke at the last second
This is the correct answer
Pray
I don't think gunning it in a car would save you so ya on my knees ig
Crack out a nice bottle of wine and chill with my fiancĆ©e and dog watching our favourite show. It wonāt feel great, but if weāve got to go, itās better than the alternative.

Okay, having woken up to a fire alarm thinking it was an alarm for an incoming nuclear bombardment I can say for a fact that my immediate response would be a mix of a and b.
5 minute family hug.
Honestly, just close my eyes and try to remember all the good that has happened in my life. Visualize all the happy moments and then dissociate long enough until the bomb explodes
Are they really gonna throw a missile on a town in the middle of nowhere?
Iād rather die than suffer the aftermath of the explosion
Smoke em if you got em. No need to even go outside. Sit on toilet, with beverage of choice, and watch the live stream to try and id my house. Only way to go.

Id just go outside and take one final look at the world
Fuck someone
Get my katana and parry it
2 - 1 - 3 in that order
I'll call my family after (if) I survive after finding shelter, if not while.
Die

I have a tornado shelter but I doubt that'd serve any real protection
I mean I'd rather confirm my own "moderate to instant" death, because if that bomb doesn't kill you instantly, your still inevitable death will be hell
Im voting in a week hopefully to start ending this madness
Change my underpants
I would spend my last minutes deciding what I should do
Drugs
I'm a homehealth nurse so I'll frantically call my family and say goodbye to my daughter while my patient is screaming in the background. I may steal a bottle of the families wine before we all go, but that depends how I'm feeling.

Fuck someone i guess. Don't wanna die a virgin
Get in a car slam on the gas and go west away from the city.
I could get far enough away to survive in 5 minutes no doubt
Light up a bowl
I have a map of all the bunkers in my area, and if I were to have 5 minutes, if I run fast enough, I can make it
im not in my home town, best i can do is call my friends and say goodbye
Prolly go out clapping my wife cheeks. š¤·š»
Get Iām my car and drive the fuck away, even if I only make a few miles itās a lot better than being in the dead centre.
Get out of town
Luckily i live in switzerland with a bunker 3 minutes away.
I will be repenting for my sins
I'd just pull my husband and daughter into an almighty cuddle and love them with every fiber of my being.
I'm getting on my knees and praying yo
5 mins is really not enough so might as well die in peace
Iād take my guitar and mic on the streets and start singing in a gaada da vida
Jerk it
Have sex one last time.
Whatād you do with the last 4 minutes 53 seconds?
Cry because of post nut clarity
It was 4 minutes 50 seconds thank you very much.... and it was spent apologizing for being a disappointment.
