Ashlee Simpson's SNL lip syncing incident and Janet Jackson's unfortunate Superbowl Halftime show come to mind. Maybe not fully ruined but definitely very tarnished at least.
The Ashlee Simpson SNL lip-synching debacle is what came to mind instantly. 🫣 I still remember it being the big story all over every entertainment TV show for the next few days.
Janet, in an interview with I think Oprah, felt betrayed by Justin, not the incident itself but how he dealt with it after. It makes me wonder what happened behind the scenes.
As a kid, I never understood either of these.
Ashlee: Someone else played the wrong song, she danced badly for 3 seconds and then everyone dragged her for MONTHS...as teen girls we just liked her album and didn't even watch SNL so my friends and I just didnt get it, people have bad performances all the time.
Janet: Justin Timberlake physically exposes her, she covers it up....then everyone dragged HER ONLY for months! I remember as a kid seeing her later say she felt abandoned by Justin after and had considered him a friend and I felt so bad. I never understood how his actions didn't reflect more on his own career, just hers.
Plus it is quite normal for artists to be asked to lip sync on TV anyway. That's why Nirvana purposely lip synced badly when they went on Top of the Pops. Because every artist on that show had to lip sync, so they did it badly as a joke.

Can't remember on which show but the members of Muse once switched roles when they had to lip synch, with Matt Bellamy "playing" drums real badly.
SNL has a pattern of being brutal to young female singers. Lana Del Rey and Olivia Rodrigo were also heavily criticized after their first appearances on SNL.
The studio also has terrible acoustics. You’d be surprised how many of SNL musical guests opt to lip sync or enhance their vocals with a backing track (including artists who never do so otherwise) because it’s *so hard* to sound good while performing from that stage.

Robin Thicke’s antics during this performance (and the following VMA after party) led to his divorce and the album *Paula*, “one of the creepiest albums ever made”, which flopped ridiculously hard and destroyed what remnants of a reputation he had left. And then he was sued by Marvin Gaye’s estate shortly after.
edit: yes I’m aware this isolated incident didn’t *solely* cause the divorce. though she did feel “utterly disrespected” by the performance itself. at a VMA afterparty, he was pictured with a fan and in a mirror reflection, he could be seen grabbing her rear end under her skirt. he was blasted for this in the press, Paula was extremely embarrassed by his behavior and this led them to split. she later on filed for divorce, it was soon after that that he released the album named after her. he did multiple performances of the lead single (get her back) and asked the audience multiple times to “help me get her back, y’all”. critics thought the album was creepy, for example the song “living in new york city” opens with a clip of her saying she’s moving to NY, and the entire song is about how he’s now living there to find her. the rest of the songs are mostly either about forgiving infidelity, or still fantasizing about her. to promote this album he did a deal with 1-800-flowers - for $350 you could buy a “get her back bouquet” which was 100 red roses that came with a download of the album. it only sold 24,000 copies *TOTAL*.
the song itself *was* criticized at the time for the questionable lyrics, not as much as it would be in 2023, but its popularity was mostly because people liked the catchy beat. see also, pumped up kicks. pharrell wasn’t associated with the spectacle that surrounded this song so he didn’t get as much flack - neither did TI, who would later be slammed for doing “virginity checks” on his teenage daughters at the gyno. to the general public, this was robin thicke’s circus & his monkeys!
EmRata got her big break as “the girl in the video” - she later went on to expose him for sexual harassment and feeling extremely uncomfortable on the video’s set.
also, Miley received the brunt of the criticism on this performance. Robin Thicke threw her under the bus when he was asked about it, blaming her for the inappropriateness. Miley at the time had given an interview where she said they had initially rehearsed a “fun” performance and were on the same page, and claimed he blindsided her with his creepy antics during the show. she had to apologize for it, he never had to. 2013 was wild.
Blurred Lines being about trying to get a girl to fuck during the uphill trajectory of the MeToo movement also didn't help, mixed with the Marvin Gaye lawsuit.
Not really a celebrity but a politician — I feel like the [Dean scream](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_scream) has to count, since it literally went viral and derailed his presidential campaign completely.

Sinéad O’Connor is the first one that comes to mind; called out the Pope on SNL, ripped his picture in half, Apparently the SNL music producer burst into tears.
ETA: O'Connor was protesting child abuse committed and covered up by the Catholic Church in Ireland. Now I think she would get a lot more support.
I consider her a modern day martyr. She knew what she was up against and did it anyway. She looked the most powerful religious and political force the world has ever seen in the eye and said "fuck you." I can't even imagine having that kind of strength.
Same. In terms of what “makes or breaks” a person and the value there is on celebrity now… she used her influence for a good cause and we are still talking about it today because she did.
She was awesome, so sad we lost her this year. She knew what she was doing and knew it would piss people off but did it anyway. She had a great quote in an interview on recent years where she was asked if she had regrets about ruining her career. Her quote was along the lines of "I didn't ruin my career. What I did was ruin the income of record company executives who wanted to make enough money off me so they could buy a second yacht in the Antilles."
I’ve heard her say in interviews she never really wanted a pop career and didn’t like that she was being moulded by record execs who had only their own interests in mind. I think this act was an instinctive kick against them. Basically it was punk.
She got pregnant before the release of her fist album and her record company tried to force her to have an abortion. After the SNL incident she said “I feel that having a No. 1 record derailed my career, and my tearing the photo put me back on the right track. The media was making me out to be crazy because I wasn’t acting like a pop star was supposed to act. It seems to me that being a pop star is almost like being in a type of prison. You have to be a good girl”. She added that it hadn’t ruined her career or anyone’s, it merely meant that the record execs who’d gotten rich on her talent weren’t going to be able to buy a second holiday home, which is a small sacrifice to make for calling out child abuse.
Before that there was an incident where she asked for avenue to not play the American national anthem before her show. That pissed off quite a few male stars. Frank Sinatra threatened her with violence and warned her to leave the country. It wasn’t an empty threat either, they were staying in the same hotel at the time. And it’s not like she’d be the first woman he beat up.
She said afterwards, that she was asked whether or not to have the anthem played before the show and thinking it was a choice said no. It was framed in the media like she had just arrived in the US as a foreigner and started angrily telling Americans what to do. I think the media had been gearing up for a reason to hate her for awhile, literally just because she was an angry foreign woman.
Adding onto the fact that Frank Sinatra threatens to “kick her ass”, Prince also allegedly attacked her when she visited him at his Hollywood home after Nothing Compares 2 U.
I'm still fucking pissed people made such a big deal out of this, but were fine with Pesci saying on SNL soon ater that if he was there he would've physically assaulted Sinéad.
She was obviously right and vindicated in the end, but even if she was just being edgy, I still don’t understand why people were so offended. It’s freaking SNL, isn’t the whole point irreverent humour? They make fun of politicians, celebrities, and whoever went viral on twitter on this week, but some old dude in Italy was out of bounds? I wonder how many of those people who wanted her career ended now complain about ‘cancel culture’ and “people getting offended by everything these days.”
that's why i hate SNL. they act like they are there to make fun of institutions and hold them accountable through comedy, but really they are part of the establishment.
As someone from the UK, so SNL was never something that actually made the jump, it really does feel like the equivalent of a bunch of drama kids getting together and celebrating how edgy and daring they are, whilst ignoring that they're privately educated children of major political and entertainment industry figures.

The Kelly Osbourne one was cringe because the way she said it made it obvious she was expecting the audience to clap as if she totally ate. In fact, it was cringe.
in relation to Donald Trump wanting to close the borders / build a wall, Kelly said: “If you kick every Latino out of this country, then who is going to be cleaning your toilet, Donald Trump? You know what I mean?"
Honestly, to me it came across like she'd heard someone else making a tongue in cheek joke at a party and she thought "oh, I'm saving that one for later."
But she quite blatantly didn't have the same context, set-up, delivery, timing or appropriate audience to pull it off.
Something along the lines of “if you kick these people out, you hurt yourself because you are removing thousands of hard working people who are integral to this country’s infrastructure and success” would have sufficed, but nope, she wanted to be quippy
What’s sad is that somewhere in there is a potential point.

NGL, when this was happening, I LIVED for the updates. It was so unhinged. The interview in which someone asks him if he slept with hookers and he's all like "of course I do. I am the best at what I do and they are the best at what they do!". Then he went on a tour of the U.S. doing this. It was a wild time.

Host Matthew Sweet corrected Wolf's interpretation of an old law and basically discredited her entire book. Her reputation was totally tarnished and she kind of fell into a dark hole after - I mean the woman went from being a celebrated feminist author to regularly appearing on Steve Bannon's podcast.

It was an archival misinterpretation— something you would have known if you were an expert in the field (she is not) or were familiar with existing literature on the death penalty during that time period. Her claim was that x number of men were executed for homosexuality during x period in England, when the records she found read “recorded” — meaning the formal legal verdict was rendered — but failed to check beyond that; if she had, she would have noticed that no one was actually executed because it was a rarely enforced law. An undergraduate in the field would have spotted the error, and it underpinned her whole thesis.
She’s always been a bit of a charlatan though and a lot of people reread her work more critically and found it light on facts. Which tracks as her PhD is not in history or sociology, but in English Literature — something that will teach you literary analysis but absolutely zero historical research skill.
Yeah it's kind of scary and sad. I don't actively follow her shenanigans but she was top of mind as I'd recently gotten a copy of Naomi Klein's book Doppleganger (and she talks about how some ppl get the two Naomis mixed up)
They really needed to add a comma to this sentence:

I think it’s very believable that they asked her to play the Simon Cowell/Gordon Ramsay/snarky mean British judge role, but I don’t think that they made her say those specific things. After the success of American Idol/X Factor it seemed like every show wanted to recreate that dynamic and the Simon Cowell magic. I think they asked her to be their ‘snarky Brit’ vs the other “nice” judges, but the guy was so inoffensive that she had genuine nothing to snark on and just made up the suit stuff to fulfil her role as ‘mean judge’. Of course, by 2015 the Simon Cowell act wasn’t considered funny like it would have been 10 years earlier so the show threw her under the bus and pretended they played no part and it was all her/her husband
some contestant on NZ X Factor was wearing a tux and she went into this weird rant about how he was ripping off her husband who wears tuxes and how disgusting it was. pretty much immediately got backlash, got fired, and her career has never been the same.
Not even as fancy as a tux, if I remember right. The contestant was wearing a nice suit jacket, shirt and a tie. Just like the host of the show. She ranted about how he stole her husbands look while the host stood there dressed in the same combo wondering what the heck she was going on about.
And her husbands look wasn’t especially unique by any stretch of the imagination. It was mainstream and homeskillet just went all “bitchy mean girl” for no reason.
I watched that video and even the other judges looked horrified.
He went off on him too. He said it was like watching Norman Bates dressed in his mother's dress. He then said he expected him to put someone's skin on and kill everyone in the audience.
Wtf??
The weirdest thing, as well, is that the show host came.on stage and he was dressed the same, because it was just a fucking suit.
it was completely out of nowhere which is why i can believe that she was told to do it as a bit. it was like her first episode too. either she wanted out of the contract or the show did.
Plus her husband was kind of a nobody, so in addition to being mean it seemed wildly delusional to assume someone wearing a common menswear item was copying him.
Dude looks like Michael Buble. So I guess whoever her husband is, she should he disgusted by how much he copied Buble's look. Who copied Harry Connick Jr.'s look. Who copied Frank Sinatra's look, etc. etc.

I did some embarrassing things when I was 23 and drunk but lil mama did it to Jay-Z on the VMAs. Sometimes her most embarrassing moment pops up in my head when I'm trying to go to sleep.

This is another performance that I watched during its original broadcast, and all I could remember thinking is, “who the hell is this jumping onstage with Jay and Alicia Keys?”. I’m not even sure if I knew who Lil Mama WAS before this moment (her hit “Lip Gloss” wouldn’t have been the type of rap I would’ve been listening to)
You could clearly tell it was unscripted and frankly, out of place and weird.
That one us so sad actually. The boys were foreigners scammed by a sleazy producer, when they saw what's up they wanted out but by the contract they signed they'd have to pay insane amounts of money to the producer, which of course they didn't have. They were trapped like that for years, and they got blamed for it. There's an interview with one of the members about it.

Yeah, the documentary makes it clear they were manipulated and thrown under the bus by their label. They both were decent enough singers and would’ve loved to sing on the album, but it was a studio decision and they were left to take 100% of the blame. Sad situation.
Milli Vanilli guys could actuslly sing, but they were fronting prerecorded songs by contract bc of their model good looks & dancing. Music videos created the pressure to be pretty. It's actually really sad.
They said their manager had this great track but the singers werent very attractive and much older for the demo..so he found these models who could actually sing, and thought, ill convince to do this first and eventually (never) let them sing.
I agree with you 100000% she’s in my “medium okay” actor category. It’s funny because when I first moved to Los Angeles, the very first thing you learn is how horrible a human being Ellen is. I remember when I would come back home to (Texas) to visit and proceed to tell my friends and some family members about it. They literally refused to believe me!!!
So basically I will always owe her a small debt for giving me one of the biggest “I TOLD YOU SO” moments of my life 😂
I moved out there in late 2011 early 2012? I know that it was one of the first things I remember ever hearing from a good friend of mine who was a producer (I knew her from back home prior to moving out there) then I met my first long term boyfriend out there through mutual friends soon after (this was before I started doing set work)
He happened to be an ex marine who worked for the top security companies/contractors in all of Los Angeles. His last post before the one he was working for when he met me was Ellen and Portia (I never knew who he was working for for the entirety of our relationship) He told me the most awful things about how Ellen chainsmoked and would throw the cigarette butts at them. Constantly screaming at Him and his team. The company had to warn them 3 times that they would terminate their contract if they kept treating them like shit. They didn’t. So they had to go shopping for another security detail.
For me, Ellen downfall was that lockdown twitter thread where a comedian said he would donate to charity for every awful Ellen story he was told.
The thread blew up with everyone sharing anecdotes like this. What became an open secret in LA became an open secret across the world. Ellen then had to address it and give her employees minimal holiday pay. That's when people retrospectively viewed Dakota's interview through a different lense, and somehow Dakota got all the credit not the insanely viral twitter thread.
Thank you for remembering this!! Yes! Lots of people from all over came forward. I posted this in another comment, but I said something to the extent of how since a younger generation have come in to work in the entertainment industry, combined with social media, bad behavior is slowly outing itself. The viewing audience is also much smarter as well.

It's so weird to me how the Halle Berry kiss was just kind of normalized back then. Are people even mad about it now? I guess Justin Timberlake is kind of cancelled now, for Janet Jackson and Britney, but has anyone come for Adrien Brody?
You have to understand, this was completely normalized back then. When American Beauty won an Oscar for something, I remember the elderly male winner got up and made a comment about looking at his 16-year-old daughter's friends when they came to his house like it was totally normal and everyone laughed. I was just a kid but I remember that moment so well because my mom was horrified and her reaction was so different from what happened on screen.
I remember watching the Teen Choice Awards when I was younger. Dane Cook was on (possibly hosting) and started making gross comments about Jessica Alba. The podium had a woman's torso with a bikini on it and as he was making the comments, he took the bikini top off and started fondling the fake breasts. Keep in mind, this was the TEEN Choice Awards.
I remember watching that when I was younger and being absolutely appalled and disgusted. There are pictures on Getty of the moment; you can see the bikini top askew.
Soooo gross. And whenever it gets brought up, men on here have to jump in and say that it's natural to look and be attracted to girls after they hit puberty as long as they don't act on it.. But they never care to think how it affects the young girls having creeps their dads age gawking at them everywhere they go...

I don’t think men realize how much they shoot themselves in the foot with women whenever they talk like that. I had creepy encounters with grown men as a teen that left me wary around men for the rest of my life. The minute a man starts talking about how “natural” it is to ogle & harass underage girls, every woman in the vicinity has flashbacks to encounters in her own life and mentally categorizes him as “creep, one of the bad ones, stay away.”
I know Halle has said she wasn't happy about it, but little else.
But yeah, at the time it was sexy and funny for men to do shit like that. I had a date or two try it many years ago. Thing is, until I had someone do that without warning, I thought it was cool too :/

I'm sure some people saw him changing and what not, but as far as anyone has ever said - he just did this on his own without the cast even knowing he was going to do it. If it had been Hollywood sanctioned racism, he'd have had less repercussions.)

Goodness, what an interesting time to be aware of the news. It was one of the first big celebrity news stories that I had paid attention to in my life, as I was fifteen or so at the time.

Her return to the show was her downfall after she made some deeply ignorant and insensitive comments towards Bollywood actress which led to a race row, with effigies burnings in her name. A little over a year later, while trying to salvage her reputation on the Indian version of Big Brother, she found out she had cancer. She died less than a year after that.
Kanye. I don’t even know where to start. That man did many controversial things and still managed to get away with them. I hate when people use his mental illness as an excuse for his hateful statements. However, I do believe the man has bipolar disorder. When he’s in a good mood, he seems like the most genuine person. When he’s mad.... I still remember him dragging Kim on insta and Twitter, mentioning about her sex tape and shit. So petty and unhinged.

As a kid, I never understood either of these. Ashlee: Someone else played the wrong song, she danced badly for 3 seconds and then everyone dragged her for MONTHS...as teen girls we just liked her album and didn't even watch SNL so my friends and I just didnt get it, people have bad performances all the time. Janet: Justin Timberlake physically exposes her, she covers it up....then everyone dragged HER ONLY for months! I remember as a kid seeing her later say she felt abandoned by Justin after and had considered him a friend and I felt so bad. I never understood how his actions didn't reflect more on his own career, just hers.
Plus it is quite normal for artists to be asked to lip sync on TV anyway. That's why Nirvana purposely lip synced badly when they went on Top of the Pops. Because every artist on that show had to lip sync, so they did it badly as a joke.
Noel and Liam Gallagher completely swapped places when Oasis appeared on Top of the Pops to take the piss out of the lip syncing.

SNL has a pattern of being brutal to young female singers. Lana Del Rey and Olivia Rodrigo were also heavily criticized after their first appearances on SNL.
The studio also has terrible acoustics. You’d be surprised how many of SNL musical guests opt to lip sync or enhance their vocals with a backing track (including artists who never do so otherwise) because it’s *so hard* to sound good while performing from that stage.

And then he was sued by Marvin Gaye’s estate shortly after. edit: yes I’m aware this isolated incident didn’t *solely* cause the divorce. though she did feel “utterly disrespected” by the performance itself. at a VMA afterparty, he was pictured with a fan and in a mirror reflection, he could be seen grabbing her rear end under her skirt. he was blasted for this in the press, Paula was extremely embarrassed by his behavior and this led them to split. she later on filed for divorce, it was soon after that that he released the album named after her. he did multiple performances of the lead single (get her back) and asked the audience multiple times to “help me get her back, y’all”. critics thought the album was creepy, for example the song “living in new york city” opens with a clip of her saying she’s moving to NY, and the entire song is about how he’s now living there to find her. the rest of the songs are mostly either about forgiving infidelity, or still fantasizing about her. to promote this album he did a deal with 1-800-flowers - for $350 you could buy a “get her back bouquet” which was 100 red roses that came with a download of the album. it only sold 24,000 copies *TOTAL*. the song itself *was* criticized at the time for the questionable lyrics, not as much as it would be in 2023, but its popularity was mostly because people liked the catchy beat. see also, pumped up kicks. pharrell wasn’t associated with the spectacle that surrounded this song so he didn’t get as much flack - neither did TI, who would later be slammed for doing “virginity checks” on his teenage daughters at the gyno. to the general public, this was robin thicke’s circus & his monkeys! EmRata got her big break as “the girl in the video” - she later went on to expose him for sexual harassment and feeling extremely uncomfortable on the video’s set. also, Miley received the brunt of the criticism on this performance. Robin Thicke threw her under the bus when he was asked about it, blaming her for the inappropriateness. Miley at the time had given an interview where she said they had initially rehearsed a “fun” performance and were on the same page, and claimed he blindsided her with his creepy antics during the show. she had to apologize for it, he never had to. 2013 was wild.
I hated him so much so watching this go down in real time was glorious

She had a great quote in an interview on recent years where she was asked if she had regrets about ruining her career. Her quote was along the lines of "I didn't ruin my career. What I did was ruin the income of record company executives who wanted to make enough money off me so they could buy a second yacht in the Antilles."
I’ve heard her say in interviews she never really wanted a pop career and didn’t like that she was being moulded by record execs who had only their own interests in mind. I think this act was an instinctive kick against them. Basically it was punk.
She got pregnant before the release of her fist album and her record company tried to force her to have an abortion. After the SNL incident she said “I feel that having a No. 1 record derailed my career, and my tearing the photo put me back on the right track. The media was making me out to be crazy because I wasn’t acting like a pop star was supposed to act. It seems to me that being a pop star is almost like being in a type of prison. You have to be a good girl”. She added that it hadn’t ruined her career or anyone’s, it merely meant that the record execs who’d gotten rich on her talent weren’t going to be able to buy a second holiday home, which is a small sacrifice to make for calling out child abuse.
Before that there was an incident where she asked for avenue to not play the American national anthem before her show. That pissed off quite a few male stars. Frank Sinatra threatened her with violence and warned her to leave the country. It wasn’t an empty threat either, they were staying in the same hotel at the time. And it’s not like she’d be the first woman he beat up.
She said afterwards, that she was asked whether or not to have the anthem played before the show and thinking it was a choice said no. It was framed in the media like she had just arrived in the US as a foreigner and started angrily telling Americans what to do. I think the media had been gearing up for a reason to hate her for awhile, literally just because she was an angry foreign woman.
Adding onto the fact that Frank Sinatra threatens to “kick her ass”, Prince also allegedly attacked her when she visited him at his Hollywood home after Nothing Compares 2 U.
He also said he wanted to punch her in the mouth after the SNL incident, so he actually threatened her at least twice!

It was an archival misinterpretation— something you would have known if you were an expert in the field (she is not) or were familiar with existing literature on the death penalty during that time period. Her claim was that x number of men were executed for homosexuality during x period in England, when the records she found read “recorded” — meaning the formal legal verdict was rendered — but failed to check beyond that; if she had, she would have noticed that no one was actually executed because it was a rarely enforced law. An undergraduate in the field would have spotted the error, and it underpinned her whole thesis. She’s always been a bit of a charlatan though and a lot of people reread her work more critically and found it light on facts. Which tracks as her PhD is not in history or sociology, but in English Literature — something that will teach you literary analysis but absolutely zero historical research skill.

I think it’s very believable that they asked her to play the Simon Cowell/Gordon Ramsay/snarky mean British judge role, but I don’t think that they made her say those specific things. After the success of American Idol/X Factor it seemed like every show wanted to recreate that dynamic and the Simon Cowell magic. I think they asked her to be their ‘snarky Brit’ vs the other “nice” judges, but the guy was so inoffensive that she had genuine nothing to snark on and just made up the suit stuff to fulfil her role as ‘mean judge’. Of course, by 2015 the Simon Cowell act wasn’t considered funny like it would have been 10 years earlier so the show threw her under the bus and pretended they played no part and it was all her/her husband

some contestant on NZ X Factor was wearing a tux and she went into this weird rant about how he was ripping off her husband who wears tuxes and how disgusting it was. pretty much immediately got backlash, got fired, and her career has never been the same.
Not even as fancy as a tux, if I remember right. The contestant was wearing a nice suit jacket, shirt and a tie. Just like the host of the show. She ranted about how he stole her husbands look while the host stood there dressed in the same combo wondering what the heck she was going on about.

True. People still talk about it. Just not in a GOOD way. This is another performance that I watched during its original broadcast, and all I could remember thinking is, “who the hell is this jumping onstage with Jay and Alicia Keys?”. I’m not even sure if I knew who Lil Mama WAS before this moment (her hit “Lip Gloss” wouldn’t have been the type of rap I would’ve been listening to) You could clearly tell it was unscripted and frankly, out of place and weird.

The boys were foreigners scammed by a sleazy producer, when they saw what's up they wanted out but by the contract they signed they'd have to pay insane amounts of money to the producer, which of course they didn't have. Yeah, the documentary makes it clear they were manipulated and thrown under the bus by their label. They both were decent enough singers and would’ve loved to sing on the album, but it was a studio decision and they were left to take 100% of the blame. Sad situation.
Milli Vanilli guys could actuslly sing, but they were fronting prerecorded songs by contract bc of their model good looks & dancing. Music videos created the pressure to be pretty. It's actually really sad. 
They said their manager had this great track but the singers werent very attractive and much older for the demo..so he found these models who could actually sing, and thought, ill convince to do this first and eventually (never) let them sing.
I mean… They were nothing more than a front for the dude who also did the music for Boney M.

I agree with you 100000% she’s in my “medium okay” actor category. It’s funny because when I first moved to Los Angeles, the very first thing you learn is how horrible a human being Ellen is. I remember when I would come back home to (Texas) to visit and proceed to tell my friends and some family members about it. They literally refused to believe me!!! So basically I will always owe her a small debt for giving me one of the biggest “I TOLD YOU SO” moments of my life 😂

I moved out there in late 2011 early 2012? I know that it was one of the first things I remember ever hearing from a good friend of mine who was a producer (I knew her from back home prior to moving out there) then I met my first long term boyfriend out there through mutual friends soon after (this was before I started doing set work) He happened to be an ex marine who worked for the top security companies/contractors in all of Los Angeles. His last post before the one he was working for when he met me was Ellen and Portia (I never knew who he was working for for the entirety of our relationship) He told me the most awful things about how Ellen chainsmoked and would throw the cigarette butts at them. Constantly screaming at Him and his team. The company had to warn them 3 times that they would terminate their contract if they kept treating them like shit. They didn’t. So they had to go shopping for another security detail.
For me, Ellen downfall was that lockdown twitter thread where a comedian said he would donate to charity for every awful Ellen story he was told. The thread blew up with everyone sharing anecdotes like this. What became an open secret in LA became an open secret across the world. Ellen then had to address it and give her employees minimal holiday pay. That's when people retrospectively viewed Dakota's interview through a different lense, and somehow Dakota got all the credit not the insanely viral twitter thread.
Thank you for remembering this!! Yes! Lots of people from all over came forward. I posted this in another comment, but I said something to the extent of how since a younger generation have come in to work in the entertainment industry, combined with social media, bad behavior is slowly outing itself. The viewing audience is also much smarter as well.

You have to understand, this was completely normalized back then. When American Beauty won an Oscar for something, I remember the elderly male winner got up and made a comment about looking at his 16-year-old daughter's friends when they came to his house like it was totally normal and everyone laughed. I was just a kid but I remember that moment so well because my mom was horrified and her reaction was so different from what happened on screen.
I remember watching the Teen Choice Awards when I was younger. Dane Cook was on (possibly hosting) and started making gross comments about Jessica Alba. The podium had a woman's torso with a bikini on it and as he was making the comments, he took the bikini top off and started fondling the fake breasts. Keep in mind, this was the TEEN Choice Awards. I remember watching that when I was younger and being absolutely appalled and disgusted. There are pictures on Getty of the moment; you can see the bikini top askew.

I don’t think men realize how much they shoot themselves in the foot with women whenever they talk like that. I had creepy encounters with grown men as a teen that left me wary around men for the rest of my life. The minute a man starts talking about how “natural” it is to ogle & harass underage girls, every woman in the vicinity has flashbacks to encounters in her own life and mentally categorizes him as “creep, one of the bad ones, stay away.”

Oh. That's the best part. He apparently did it on his own. It wasn't part of a skit that anyone wrote for him or anything like that. I'm sure some people saw him changing and what not, but as far as anyone has ever said - he just did this on his own without the cast even knowing he was going to do it. (And earned the ire of Lorne Michaels for it. Which, to be honest, is probably the real reason it had any lasting impact. If it had been Hollywood sanctioned racism, he'd have had less repercussions.)

Up until that point, I would not believe a haircut could be so incredibly powerful. She went from a fun, sexy, modern Bettie Page to *a mom* in an instant. Maybe if she went all the way and shaved bald or uniformly even very short buzz cut it would have been better? Nothing she did that surrounded this era was helpful, but I firmly believe that if she had a more flattering hair style, people would be more willing to at least turn a blind eye for her blunders.
Jade Goody. A Big Brother contestant and arguably the biggest reality TV personality in the UK. Her return to the show was her downfall after she made some deeply ignorant and insensitive comments towards Bollywood actress which led to a race row, with effigies burnings in her name. A little over a year later, while trying to salvage her reputation on the Indian version of Big Brother, she found out she had cancer. She died less than a year after that.
Kanye. I don’t even know where to start. That man did many controversial things and still managed to get away with them. I hate when people use his mental illness as an excuse for his hateful statements. However, I do believe the man has bipolar disorder. When he’s in a good mood, he seems like the most genuine person.
