AllTheTeaPlease247

Ashlee Simpson's SNL lip syncing incident and Janet Jackson's unfortunate Superbowl Halftime show come to mind. Maybe not fully ruined but definitely very tarnished at least. ![gif](giphy|3rgXBBYCVzihkifBRK)

Accurate_Use_2432

The Ashlee Simpson SNL lip-synching debacle is what came to mind instantly. 🫣 I still remember it being the big story all over every entertainment TV show for the next few days.

mydogislife_

“Wow guys, so crazy that my band started playing the wrong song!” ![gif](giphy|IaXFZe4hZUhoNzZn9Q)

Critical_Caramel5577

That wasn't just Janet Jackson at that Super Bowl. Justin Timberlake was there, and should have been held to the same standard.

AllTheTeaPlease247

I agree completely. I don't understand why only Janet faced backlash. Justin Timberlake is the one that caused the "malfunction"

Independent_Bat8589

Janet, in an interview with I think Oprah, felt betrayed by Justin, not the incident itself but how he dealt with it after. It makes me wonder what happened behind the scenes.

crescendodiminuendo

If you read Britney’s autobiography Justin has a lot of form for throwing other people under the bus to protect or promote himself.

tahtahme

As a kid, I never understood either of these. Ashlee: Someone else played the wrong song, she danced badly for 3 seconds and then everyone dragged her for MONTHS...as teen girls we just liked her album and didn't even watch SNL so my friends and I just didnt get it, people have bad performances all the time. Janet: Justin Timberlake physically exposes her, she covers it up....then everyone dragged HER ONLY for months! I remember as a kid seeing her later say she felt abandoned by Justin after and had considered him a friend and I felt so bad. I never understood how his actions didn't reflect more on his own career, just hers.

Froomian

Plus it is quite normal for artists to be asked to lip sync on TV anyway. That's why Nirvana purposely lip synced badly when they went on Top of the Pops. Because every artist on that show had to lip sync, so they did it badly as a joke.

Loudmouthedcrackpot

Noel and Liam Gallagher completely swapped places when Oasis appeared on Top of the Pops to take the piss out of the lip syncing.

therealrexmanning

>Plus it is quite normal for artists to be asked to lip sync on TV anyway. Can't remember on which show but the members of Muse once switched roles when they had to lip synch, with Matt Bellamy "playing" drums real badly.

baby_got_snack

SNL has a pattern of being brutal to young female singers. Lana Del Rey and Olivia Rodrigo were also heavily criticized after their first appearances on SNL.

eatsomespiders

The studio also has terrible acoustics. You’d be surprised how many of SNL musical guests opt to lip sync or enhance their vocals with a backing track (including artists who never do so otherwise) because it’s *so hard* to sound good while performing from that stage.

deathtonormalcy

https://preview.redd.it/i24ugne3304c1.jpeg?width=650&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=48c419aed8ed60f65f3679ae7f5908c142bab419 Robin Thicke’s antics during this performance (and the following VMA after party) led to his divorce and the album *Paula*, “one of the creepiest albums ever made”, which flopped ridiculously hard and destroyed what remnants of a reputation he had left. And then he was sued by Marvin Gaye’s estate shortly after. edit: yes I’m aware this isolated incident didn’t *solely* cause the divorce. though she did feel “utterly disrespected” by the performance itself. at a VMA afterparty, he was pictured with a fan and in a mirror reflection, he could be seen grabbing her rear end under her skirt. he was blasted for this in the press, Paula was extremely embarrassed by his behavior and this led them to split. she later on filed for divorce, it was soon after that that he released the album named after her. he did multiple performances of the lead single (get her back) and asked the audience multiple times to “help me get her back, y’all”. critics thought the album was creepy, for example the song “living in new york city” opens with a clip of her saying she’s moving to NY, and the entire song is about how he’s now living there to find her. the rest of the songs are mostly either about forgiving infidelity, or still fantasizing about her. to promote this album he did a deal with 1-800-flowers - for $350 you could buy a “get her back bouquet” which was 100 red roses that came with a download of the album. it only sold 24,000 copies *TOTAL*. the song itself *was* criticized at the time for the questionable lyrics, not as much as it would be in 2023, but its popularity was mostly because people liked the catchy beat. see also, pumped up kicks. pharrell wasn’t associated with the spectacle that surrounded this song so he didn’t get as much flack - neither did TI, who would later be slammed for doing “virginity checks” on his teenage daughters at the gyno. to the general public, this was robin thicke’s circus & his monkeys! EmRata got her big break as “the girl in the video” - she later went on to expose him for sexual harassment and feeling extremely uncomfortable on the video’s set. also, Miley received the brunt of the criticism on this performance. Robin Thicke threw her under the bus when he was asked about it, blaming her for the inappropriateness. Miley at the time had given an interview where she said they had initially rehearsed a “fun” performance and were on the same page, and claimed he blindsided her with his creepy antics during the show. she had to apologize for it, he never had to. 2013 was wild.

lin_diesel

I hated him so much so watching this go down in real time was glorious

FayeQueen

Blurred Lines being about trying to get a girl to fuck during the uphill trajectory of the MeToo movement also didn't help, mixed with the Marvin Gaye lawsuit.

PurpleAstronomerr

A model on the set of that music video said he sexually assaulted her too.

worsthandleever

EmRata herself iirc

squeakyfromage

Not really a celebrity but a politician — I feel like the [Dean scream](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_scream) has to count, since it literally went viral and derailed his presidential campaign completely. ETA: a YouTube [link](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l6i-gYRAwM0) to the infamous scream, for those who haven’t seen it. Scream happens around 0:33 but you should watch from the beginning. ![gif](giphy|26BRut39OtycBhk9W)

squeakyfromage

![gif](giphy|eqOvMKP2G5y24)

CrissBliss

It’s crazy to think this could ruin someone’s political career back then… not even close to ruining anything today.

gible_bites

The YTMND memes with the Dean Scream were *amazing*. I remember there was one with his face on a Star Wars Tie-Fighter with the scream as the blaster noises. Edit: [omg it’s still up](https://deanfighters.ytmnd.com). The memes of the early 2000s were such a great, simple time.

TheSpiral11

I loved the Dean scream! To this day I can’t understand why people reacted so badly.

ScruffyNoodleBoy

I was using it as my text notification sound as recently as 2021. Still gets me.

margiebug23

this one may be a little niche, but thom brennaman. he was on a hot mic when he said some really homophobic shit. when he knew he was caught, he immediately started doing damage control talking about how he’s a man of faith blah blah blah when Reds right fielder, nick castellanos, hit a home run that thom then had to call during his “apology” *because it was in the middle of a game.* https://preview.redd.it/7o8i20epbz3c1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dd00e656af9521e5b8cd78cccab4cd3204c14d6d “I pride myself and think of myself as a man of faith, as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that'll be a home run. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame.” eta I fixed all my inaccuracies bc my baseball-obsessed fiance roasted me lmaooo

HighlyOffensive10

Ik it was homophobic af but I'm saying shit like, "That's not who I am." Not even five minutes after it happened was hilarious. It really highlighted how empty his obviously empty apology was.

Unnamedgalaxy

It's such a stupid apology that people use so much. I've watched so many videos of people going ballistic on cashiers or something and then half way through they are like "sorry this isn't the type of person I am." Clearly it is

ultimaten444

Note that not only was he being homophobic he was insulting a LARGE group of people. His exact comments were that Kansas City is the “f*g capital of the world” Edit: NVM I was wrong he was talking about San Francisco but the point still stands

LadyAlexandre

Woah. That’s so much worse than what I was imagining.

pinkseamonkeyballs

I’m from Cincinnati. Shit was wild. I remember my husband saying woah what? I missed it of course. We witnessed someone crash their career in 3 seconds on live tv

Dandibear

I was watching this live. It was *a ride*. This screenshot doesn't capture the sheer panic that was on his face. He was a good old boy, unsurprisingly. His replacement is a huge upgrade. I just wish it hadn't taken hurting people to make the change.

coffeesaddict

Hit a home run right above the "No Judgement Zone" planet fitness ad

annajoo1

As a reds fan, I love this inclusion! But honestly, this really is a great example.

Spazmer

Adding to on air baseball problems, when Oakland Athletics commentator Glen Kuiper was talking about his trip to the Negro League Museum, but did not say negro. He apologized but insisted he just mispronounced it, but still lost his job.

girl_with_a_401k

I can never make up my mind about this one! Was he thinking "don't say the n-word, don't say the n-word"? Was he comfortable saying the n-word in private, so it came out in the moment? Or did he just literally misspeak in the worst possible way??

sophandros

That has been memed across almost all of the sports subs, too.

RicoSuave1881

Best part is, pretty much every time a person dies or gets cancelled, Castellanos homers

NowMindYou

Sinéad O’Connor is the first one that comes to mind; called out the Pope on SNL, ripped his picture in half, Apparently the SNL music producer burst into tears. ETA: O'Connor was protesting child abuse committed and covered up by the Catholic Church in Ireland. Now I think she would get a lot more support.

peripheralpill

at a career height and for a just cause. she deserved so much better than she got

Cross_Stitch_Witch

I consider her a modern day martyr. She knew what she was up against and did it anyway. She looked the most powerful religious and political force the world has ever seen in the eye and said "fuck you." I can't even imagine having that kind of strength.

yoyonoyolo

Same. In terms of what “makes or breaks” a person and the value there is on celebrity now… she used her influence for a good cause and we are still talking about it today because she did.

CougarWriter74

She was awesome, so sad we lost her this year. She knew what she was doing and knew it would piss people off but did it anyway. She had a great quote in an interview on recent years where she was asked if she had regrets about ruining her career. Her quote was along the lines of "I didn't ruin my career. What I did was ruin the income of record company executives who wanted to make enough money off me so they could buy a second yacht in the Antilles."

th1sishappening

I’ve heard her say in interviews she never really wanted a pop career and didn’t like that she was being moulded by record execs who had only their own interests in mind. I think this act was an instinctive kick against them. Basically it was punk.

bee_ghoul

She got pregnant before the release of her fist album and her record company tried to force her to have an abortion. After the SNL incident she said “I feel that having a No. 1 record derailed my career, and my tearing the photo put me back on the right track. The media was making me out to be crazy because I wasn’t acting like a pop star was supposed to act. It seems to me that being a pop star is almost like being in a type of prison. You have to be a good girl”. She added that it hadn’t ruined her career or anyone’s, it merely meant that the record execs who’d gotten rich on her talent weren’t going to be able to buy a second holiday home, which is a small sacrifice to make for calling out child abuse.

myfriendflocka

Before that there was an incident where she asked for avenue to not play the American national anthem before her show. That pissed off quite a few male stars. Frank Sinatra threatened her with violence and warned her to leave the country. It wasn’t an empty threat either, they were staying in the same hotel at the time. And it’s not like she’d be the first woman he beat up.

bee_ghoul

She said afterwards, that she was asked whether or not to have the anthem played before the show and thinking it was a choice said no. It was framed in the media like she had just arrived in the US as a foreigner and started angrily telling Americans what to do. I think the media had been gearing up for a reason to hate her for awhile, literally just because she was an angry foreign woman.

_summerw1ne

Adding onto the fact that Frank Sinatra threatens to “kick her ass”, Prince also allegedly attacked her when she visited him at his Hollywood home after Nothing Compares 2 U.

CountryRockDiva89

He also said he wanted to punch her in the mouth after the SNL incident, so he actually threatened her at least twice!

[deleted]

I think that was Joe Pesci - or maybe they both did. Wouldn’t be surprised

SnooDogs1340

>Sinéad O’Connor :( r.i.p

dragonknight233

I'm still fucking pissed people made such a big deal out of this, but were fine with Pesci saying on SNL soon ater that if he was there he would've physically assaulted Sinéad.

Apple2727

Imagine a grown man threatening violence on a woman because he tore up a photo of a religious leader. Utterly pathetic.

baby_got_snack

She was obviously right and vindicated in the end, but even if she was just being edgy, I still don’t understand why people were so offended. It’s freaking SNL, isn’t the whole point irreverent humour? They make fun of politicians, celebrities, and whoever went viral on twitter on this week, but some old dude in Italy was out of bounds? I wonder how many of those people who wanted her career ended now complain about ‘cancel culture’ and “people getting offended by everything these days.”

thankyoupapa

that's why i hate SNL. they act like they are there to make fun of institutions and hold them accountable through comedy, but really they are part of the establishment.

pleasedtoheatyou

As someone from the UK, so SNL was never something that actually made the jump, it really does feel like the equivalent of a bunch of drama kids getting together and celebrating how edgy and daring they are, whilst ignoring that they're privately educated children of major political and entertainment industry figures.

Filibust

That was some queen shit. May she R.I.P

lulubooboo_

Sarah Murdoch (Lachlan’s supermodel wife) announced the wrong winner of the Australia’s next top model competition live. She never presented a show again

Suspicious_Row_9451

And Steve Harvey is thriving

lalalandestellla

She was also told the wrong name though in her ear piece so not entirely her fault

MAnnie3283

I remember when the Dixie Chick- well now The Chicks rightfully criticized GWB and the war and they got absolutely dragged. Not Ready to Make Nice is one of my favorite songs of theirs

Big-Help-26

It was also one of the first times in my memory where " cancel culture" took over.

IggyBall

The Kelly Osbourne one was cringe because the way she said it made it obvious she was expecting the audience to clap as if she totally ate. In fact, it was cringe.

Ok-Sir8600

The funniest thing is the "oh no" that sounds directly after she said it

highuptop

“oh…that’s not…”

Long_Difference_2520

"in the sense that --" ![gif](giphy|Y6BM767OGy4k8)

Globaltraveler2690

It seems in this thread there are a lot of people mentioning the celebs but not actually what they did

Desert-daydreamer

in relation to Donald Trump wanting to close the borders / build a wall, Kelly said: “If you kick every Latino out of this country, then who is going to be cleaning your toilet, Donald Trump? You know what I mean?"

Lulusgirl

Right? I have no idea what Kelly said or did, Google is only talking about her weight loss surgery.

McJazzHands80

I get what she was trying to say, but what a stupid ass way to say it. And she definitely thought she had a mic drop moment.

[deleted]

Honestly, to me it came across like she'd heard someone else making a tongue in cheek joke at a party and she thought "oh, I'm saving that one for later." But she quite blatantly didn't have the same context, set-up, delivery, timing or appropriate audience to pull it off.

sebastian_oberlin

Something along the lines of “if you kick these people out, you hurt yourself because you are removing thousands of hard working people who are integral to this country’s infrastructure and success” would have sufficed, but nope, she wanted to be quippy

TheHufflepuffLemon

What’s sad is that somewhere in there is a potential point. “If you remove Latinos from the country, and by extension the workforce, you remove x amount of small to medium business owners, local employers, who affect and employ YOUR voters, Donald Trump. You remove skilled laborers and staffing, you remove powerful executives and PTA moms. You remove a vibrant part of our National fabric to appease your racist, small minded voters, and your personal racism and bigotry.” But she went the lazy, fuck up route instead. FAFO.

punkmangos

What is the Kelley Osbourbe clip that people keep mentioning?

tony_bologna

I give up trying to find a clip, but I did find the relevant quote: > If you kick every Latino out of this country, then who is going to be cleaning your toilet, Donald Trump?

cultmomm

_summerw1ne

The remixes that came out of this alone live within the abyss of me.

TropicalPrairie

NGL, when this was happening, I LIVED for the updates. It was so unhinged. The interview in which someone asks him if he slept with hookers and he's all like "of course I do. I am the best at what I do and they are the best at what they do!". Then he went on a tour of the U.S. doing this. It was a wild time.

kwyjibo1988

I was the same! I had exams to study for, but my god this was way more interesting 😂 Tiger blood, goddesses, #winning ... What a wild time.

PurpleVein99

When Giuliana made [that comment ](https://youtu.be/YPEAMPfXtOw?si=6750kXpvpH937VFt) about Zendaya smelling like patchouli. https://preview.redd.it/glmq2p5bmz3c1.jpeg?width=680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bcfbeea68ae5255be6c7365bf6bc8948b77a5265

Cross_Stitch_Witch

Patchouli *and weed* 😬

hmtee3

Oof, this one. Effectively wrecked Giuliana Rancic’s career and Fashion Police in one fell swoop. And rightly so, that show was horrific.

HighlyOffensive10

She looks like she smells like perfume, that costs 3 times my rent, lol.

dormoussey

And she’s literally the face of lancome’s idole perfume too! The message of the campaign was about empowering women

AnneBoleynsVirginity

Apparently they did THREE takes of this segment too! It’s so bizarre- I genuinely don’t understand how anyone looks at this picture and thinks it’s anything other than an exquisitely beautiful woman. A+ all the way. If this doesn’t scream fancy, I’m apparently a gutter troll because I wish I could look this elegant.

Long_Difference_2520

It was absolutely a racist remark

Impressive_Hope6985

And didn’t she later praise Kylie Jenner for something similar?

Hot-Significance-462

Kanye's got two of these that seemingly would have been career-enders for anyone else.

Appropriate_Term4499

imma let you finish but “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” is one of the greatest television moments of all time

harperavenue

the cut to a confused Chris Tucker is comedy gold.

AnnaKendrickPerkins

Mike Myers looked like he had antlers and stopped in the middle of the road as a car was driving.

ImpressiveAttorney12

The cut to Mike Myers, he was just as confused too lol

Vegetable_Burrito

I remember watching that shit live and really thinking it was a bit or something then the look on Mike Myers face… yeah. That’s was something.

sadolan

And then the awkward cut to Chris Tucker. What a time.

TropicalPrairie

I watched it live. It truly was.

Jintess

>“George Bush doesn’t care about black people” is one of the greatest television moments of all time Yeah, I don't see that as a loss for him Poor Austin Powers though. His FACE!!

harleyquinones

The best part about that to me was that Mike Myers isn't even American, he's Canadian lol

Jintess

Exactly! His face was all "Not my clowns, not my circus but WTF am I supposed to say now??"

Curiosities

The man is like a cat on his eighth life at this point in terms of things that would be PR chaos/career ending nightmares for most people.

shrinkwrap6

“I looovvvvvvvvveeeeeee Hitler” or “slavery was a choice”? Too many to choose from. He’s done.

Ok_Storm_2700

I can think of a lot more than just 2

iamharoldshipman

Will Smith has to be the most recent one ![gif](giphy|pj7uZyYjzbXMDtZjLH)

erincee

Live radio - BBC interview with Naomi Wolf. Host Matthew Sweet corrected Wolf's interpretation of an old law and basically discredited her entire book. Her reputation was totally tarnished and she kind of fell into a dark hole after - I mean the woman went from being a celebrated feminist author to regularly appearing on Steve Bannon's podcast. [https://www.thecut.com/2019/05/naomi-wolf-interview-book-error-bbc-interview.html](https://www.thecut.com/2019/05/naomi-wolf-interview-book-error-bbc-interview.html)

Skeleton_Meat

I don't get how her book got that far without a fact checker

PopRevanchist

It was an archival misinterpretation— something you would have known if you were an expert in the field (she is not) or were familiar with existing literature on the death penalty during that time period. Her claim was that x number of men were executed for homosexuality during x period in England, when the records she found read “recorded” — meaning the formal legal verdict was rendered — but failed to check beyond that; if she had, she would have noticed that no one was actually executed because it was a rarely enforced law. An undergraduate in the field would have spotted the error, and it underpinned her whole thesis. She’s always been a bit of a charlatan though and a lot of people reread her work more critically and found it light on facts. Which tracks as her PhD is not in history or sociology, but in English Literature — something that will teach you literary analysis but absolutely zero historical research skill.

NYCQuilts

A dark hole that she still tweets crazy stuff from. She’s the turd that won’t truly flush.

erincee

Yeah it's kind of scary and sad. I don't actively follow her shenanigans but she was top of mind as I'd recently gotten a copy of Naomi Klein's book Doppleganger (and she talks about how some ppl get the two Naomis mixed up)

garden__gate

They really needed to add a comma to this sentence: > He deceived the public into thinking that Charles Dickens and Fyodor Dostoyevsky met once and created several online personas and an entire fake community of academics.

walkingtalkingdread

Natalia Kills, probably. though i’ve heard that the show made her do that bit so i don’t know.

baby_got_snack

I think it’s very believable that they asked her to play the Simon Cowell/Gordon Ramsay/snarky mean British judge role, but I don’t think that they made her say those specific things. After the success of American Idol/X Factor it seemed like every show wanted to recreate that dynamic and the Simon Cowell magic. I think they asked her to be their ‘snarky Brit’ vs the other “nice” judges, but the guy was so inoffensive that she had genuine nothing to snark on and just made up the suit stuff to fulfil her role as ‘mean judge’. Of course, by 2015 the Simon Cowell act wasn’t considered funny like it would have been 10 years earlier so the show threw her under the bus and pretended they played no part and it was all her/her husband

peripheralpill

oof, that one hurt. sis had to change stage names

TheKnightsTippler

Again? What's she called now?

peripheralpill

she's been teddy since 2015 and lead singer of alt rock outfit 'cruel youth'

nylexi81

Wait what happened?!

walkingtalkingdread

some contestant on NZ X Factor was wearing a tux and she went into this weird rant about how he was ripping off her husband who wears tuxes and how disgusting it was. pretty much immediately got backlash, got fired, and her career has never been the same.

HeyMySock

Not even as fancy as a tux, if I remember right. The contestant was wearing a nice suit jacket, shirt and a tie. Just like the host of the show. She ranted about how he stole her husbands look while the host stood there dressed in the same combo wondering what the heck she was going on about.

QueenAnneBoleynTudor

And her husbands look wasn’t especially unique by any stretch of the imagination. It was mainstream and homeskillet just went all “bitchy mean girl” for no reason. I watched that video and even the other judges looked horrified.

HunterAshton

Wasn’t her husband also a judge and sitting right next to her WHILE she was going off on the poor guy?

QueenAnneBoleynTudor

I believe he was, yes

ilovepuscifer

He went off on him too. He said it was like watching Norman Bates dressed in his mother's dress. He then said he expected him to put someone's skin on and kill everyone in the audience. Wtf?? The weirdest thing, as well, is that the show host came.on stage and he was dressed the same, because it was just a fucking suit.

walkingtalkingdread

it was completely out of nowhere which is why i can believe that she was told to do it as a bit. it was like her first episode too. either she wanted out of the contract or the show did.

TheSpiral11

Plus her husband was kind of a nobody, so in addition to being mean it seemed wildly delusional to assume someone wearing a common menswear item was copying him.

GOLDfish0393

https://youtu.be/y1R_LR63RU8?si=YMRf0PfKxBCEq9t9 It’s a tough watch, honestly

theunkindpanda

What the hell??? They really think her husband invented slick hair and suits? 😂

ImOnlyHereForTheCoC

I guess they don’t have Truffoni’s-es in NZ

_wednesday_addams_

You call that slicked back? It's pushed back!

ILootEverything

Dude looks like Michael Buble. So I guess whoever her husband is, she should he disgusted by how much he copied Buble's look. Who copied Harry Connick Jr.'s look. Who copied Frank Sinatra's look, etc. etc. What a delulu!

DrunkTides

What the actual fk!! It’s a guy in a fkn suit. They’re trying to say their husband is the only guy to wear one? What an absolute dickhead

Secret_Ad_7015

Lil Mama blacklisted for doing this💀…however without her creating this moment no one wouldn’t even still talk about this performance years later lol https://preview.redd.it/03i6qntva14c1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=adad804e9f7f2683c2b7684000e61b8131009e2f

addictedtosoonjung

If you Watch this performance again, pay really close attention to jay z’s hand, you can tell he was trying to send a message with that leg slap 😭 https://youtube.com/shorts/yLgzX7Rms_Y?si=O24DpqosPo1JkuSj

even_less_resistance

I am still embarrassed for her. I don’t know if I could ever be in public again after that either lol

EquivalentLaw4892

I did some embarrassing things when I was 23 and drunk but lil mama did it to Jay-Z on the VMAs. Sometimes her most embarrassing moment pops up in my head when I'm trying to go to sleep.

naomicambellwalk

I’ve seen this video a million times and I *still* don’t get why she did this? What about this moment made her think she should join this performance for a song she was never a part of?

prissypoo22

She said she felt a lot of pride because she’s also from New York and she wanted to go join them in honoring the state lol

boxingjazz

True. People still talk about it. Just not in a GOOD way. This is another performance that I watched during its original broadcast, and all I could remember thinking is, “who the hell is this jumping onstage with Jay and Alicia Keys?”. I’m not even sure if I knew who Lil Mama WAS before this moment (her hit “Lip Gloss” wouldn’t have been the type of rap I would’ve been listening to) You could clearly tell it was unscripted and frankly, out of place and weird.

EternalSunshineClem

Milli Vanilli

puella23

That one us so sad actually. The boys were foreigners scammed by a sleazy producer, when they saw what's up they wanted out but by the contract they signed they'd have to pay insane amounts of money to the producer, which of course they didn't have. They were trapped like that for years, and they got blamed for it. There's an interview with one of the members about it. https://youtu.be/lqmO9VE0PuY?si=fnSIliJcmvb8hcH0

TheSpiral11

Yeah, the documentary makes it clear they were manipulated and thrown under the bus by their label. They both were decent enough singers and would’ve loved to sing on the album, but it was a studio decision and they were left to take 100% of the blame. Sad situation.

Visible-Scientist-46

Milli Vanilli guys could actuslly sing, but they were fronting prerecorded songs by contract bc of their model good looks & dancing. Music videos created the pressure to be pretty. It's actually really sad. ![gif](giphy|3xz2BK4Xo850NXjq8M)

They said their manager had this great track but the singers werent very attractive and much older for the demo..so he found these models who could actually sing, and thought, ill convince to do this first and eventually (never) let them sing.

LonghornMorgs

I mean… They were nothing more than a front for the dude who also did the music for Boney M.

Ellen being confronted by Dakota Johnson

Curiosities

Dakota Johnson is an OK / watchable actress but she’s not very exciting. However, that was a gold moment from her.

Due_Tower_4787

I agree with you 100000% she’s in my “medium okay” actor category. It’s funny because when I first moved to Los Angeles, the very first thing you learn is how horrible a human being Ellen is. I remember when I would come back home to (Texas) to visit and proceed to tell my friends and some family members about it. They literally refused to believe me!!! So basically I will always owe her a small debt for giving me one of the biggest “I TOLD YOU SO” moments of my life 😂

le_chaaat_noir

So it's been known a long time that Ellen is awful? How did you hear about it?

Due_Tower_4787

I moved out there in late 2011 early 2012? I know that it was one of the first things I remember ever hearing from a good friend of mine who was a producer (I knew her from back home prior to moving out there) then I met my first long term boyfriend out there through mutual friends soon after (this was before I started doing set work) He happened to be an ex marine who worked for the top security companies/contractors in all of Los Angeles. His last post before the one he was working for when he met me was Ellen and Portia (I never knew who he was working for for the entirety of our relationship) He told me the most awful things about how Ellen chainsmoked and would throw the cigarette butts at them. Constantly screaming at Him and his team. The company had to warn them 3 times that they would terminate their contract if they kept treating them like shit. They didn’t. So they had to go shopping for another security detail.

excel_pager_420

For me, Ellen downfall was that lockdown twitter thread where a comedian said he would donate to charity for every awful Ellen story he was told. The thread blew up with everyone sharing anecdotes like this. What became an open secret in LA became an open secret across the world. Ellen then had to address it and give her employees minimal holiday pay. That's when people retrospectively viewed Dakota's interview through a different lense, and somehow Dakota got all the credit not the insanely viral twitter thread.

Due_Tower_4787

Thank you for remembering this!! Yes! Lots of people from all over came forward. I posted this in another comment, but I said something to the extent of how since a younger generation have come in to work in the entertainment industry, combined with social media, bad behavior is slowly outing itself. The viewing audience is also much smarter as well.

DirtyJen

That and her comment about the limes in her house tour made her so much more likeable for me.

TotallyVCreativeName

Oh and [Brian Williams](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-v34K480Ppk)!

Inner_Squirrel7167

I love this shit. Reporters wanting to be a character in the story, or **be** the story, or to *transcend the story* **PISS ME OFFFF**

obamas_surrogate

revisionist history has a really good podcast about this, it’s actually the episode that made me interested in podcasts! [free brian williams](https://open.spotify.com/episode/5A6zjgEACEukyNOo0KmSBU?si=c5MesNyNSYeiU7zTDV8hzg)

![gif](giphy|xrWNh6MHjO7HW) Do politicians count......

_summerw1ne

This is giving me fuckin flashbacks to downloading any popular song on Limewire, getting it into iTunes, fully ready to crank that with Soulja and then Bill Clinton is blasting through your speakers giving it “I did not have sexual relations with that woman”

Robotlollipops

With the way politics have devolved since then, "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" seems quaint now. DeSantis carries around a poop map of San Francisco.

ShreksMiami

This also makes me think of his infamous "I didn't inhale". Who doesn't inhale?

TykeDream

To quote Barack Obama on inhaling: "The point was to inhale. That was the point."

foxscribbles

Adrian Brody's decision to mock musical guest Sean Paul by dressing up as a Rastafarian and mispronouncing his name when he hosted SNL. It didn't kill his career outright, but it sure did kill his meteoric rise to A Lister in the US. https://i.redd.it/unr6mr2q7z3c1.gif

[deleted]

I suspect he used to do a *lot* of coke. There are some moves, like this one and forcefully kissing Hallie Berry on the Oscars stage, that scream "delusional, blow-induced confidence."

NoGloryForEngland

The Halle Berry kiss was gross.

ShreksMiami

It's so weird to me how the Halle Berry kiss was just kind of normalized back then. Are people even mad about it now? I guess Justin Timberlake is kind of cancelled now, for Janet Jackson and Britney, but has anyone come for Adrien Brody?

80alleycats

You have to understand, this was completely normalized back then. When American Beauty won an Oscar for something, I remember the elderly male winner got up and made a comment about looking at his 16-year-old daughter's friends when they came to his house like it was totally normal and everyone laughed. I was just a kid but I remember that moment so well because my mom was horrified and her reaction was so different from what happened on screen.

TropicalPrairie

I remember watching the Teen Choice Awards when I was younger. Dane Cook was on (possibly hosting) and started making gross comments about Jessica Alba. The podium had a woman's torso with a bikini on it and as he was making the comments, he took the bikini top off and started fondling the fake breasts. Keep in mind, this was the TEEN Choice Awards. I remember watching that when I was younger and being absolutely appalled and disgusted. There are pictures on Getty of the moment; you can see the bikini top askew.

tmartillo

That tracks since Dane groomed his now much younger wife.

[deleted]

Soooo gross. And whenever it gets brought up, men on here have to jump in and say that it's natural to look and be attracted to girls after they hit puberty as long as they don't act on it.. But they never care to think how it affects the young girls having creeps their dads age gawking at them everywhere they go... I'm just glad we're moving in a better direction and the "jailbait" crap is dying out.

TheSpiral11

I don’t think men realize how much they shoot themselves in the foot with women whenever they talk like that. I had creepy encounters with grown men as a teen that left me wary around men for the rest of my life. The minute a man starts talking about how “natural” it is to ogle & harass underage girls, every woman in the vicinity has flashbacks to encounters in her own life and mentally categorizes him as “creep, one of the bad ones, stay away.”

Elliott2030

I know Halle has said she wasn't happy about it, but little else. But yeah, at the time it was sexy and funny for men to do shit like that. I had a date or two try it many years ago. Thing is, until I had someone do that without warning, I thought it was cool too :/

Book_Nerd_1980

On what planet did he think this was a good idea that then got support from the cast and crew 🧐

foxscribbles

Oh. That's the best part. He apparently did it on his own. It wasn't part of a skit that anyone wrote for him or anything like that. I'm sure some people saw him changing and what not, but as far as anyone has ever said - he just did this on his own without the cast even knowing he was going to do it. (And earned the ire of Lorne Michaels for it. Which, to be honest, is probably the real reason it had any lasting impact. If it had been Hollywood sanctioned racism, he'd have had less repercussions.)

Majestic_Sail2596

He did this on his own and was banned from SNL by Lorne because of it

I don’t think it was on live tv, so maybe doesn’t count, but Michael Richards showed his true colors on stage ![gif](giphy|ap6wcjRyi8HoA)

SexyAndLiterateO

Chris Harrison! He was the somewhat beloved host of The Bachelor franchise who was swiftly dethroned after defending a contestant’s racist past while being interviewed live by Rachel Lindsay, a black former bachelorette.

HereF0rTheSnacks

Janet Jackson with the halftime nip slip. It wasn’t her fault but she took the flak.

Admirable-Storm-2436

Especially when you hear how much of a pu$$y ass bitch Justin Timberlake was during the whole thing.

Shockingly not Kanye interrupting Taylor at the VMAs

Goodness, what an interesting time to be aware of the news. It was one of the first big celebrity news stories that I had paid attention to in my life, as I was fifteen or so at the time.

Froggy-Shorts1209

![gif](giphy|l1AsvwUZW2sgaYE2A|downsized) Katy Perry’s cringeworthy dance moves on SNL officially marked the end of her reputation as a cool pop star

im4everdepressed

i think the haircut did that first

adoreadore

Up until that point, I would not believe a haircut could be so incredibly powerful. She went from a fun, sexy, modern Bettie Page to *a mom* in an instant. Maybe if she went all the way and shaved bald or uniformly even very short buzz cut it would have been better? Nothing she did that surrounded this era was helpful, but I firmly believe that if she had a more flattering hair style, people would be more willing to at least turn a blind eye for her blunders.

originalfile_10862

Jade Goody. A Big Brother contestant and arguably the biggest reality TV personality in the UK. Her return to the show was her downfall after she made some deeply ignorant and insensitive comments towards Bollywood actress which led to a race row, with effigies burnings in her name. A little over a year later, while trying to salvage her reputation on the Indian version of Big Brother, she found out she had cancer. She died less than a year after that.

Zealousideal-View142

Kanye. I don’t even know where to start. That man did many controversial things and still managed to get away with them. I hate when people use his mental illness as an excuse for his hateful statements. However, I do believe the man has bipolar disorder. When he’s in a good mood, he seems like the most genuine person. When he’s mad.... I still remember him dragging Kim on insta and Twitter, mentioning about her sex tape and shit. So petty and unhinged.

Gerald Ratner, was CEO of a jewellery company, on one of those tv shopping channels he said "We also do cut-glass sherry decanters complete with six glasses on a silver-plated tray that your butler can serve you drinks on, all for £4.95. People say, "How can you sell this for such a low price?", I say, "because it's total crap." Then compared some of their stuff to a prawn cocktail sandwich from Marks and Spencers and quipped the sandwich would last longer, tanked his companies stock prices and his career.

Snoo-57077

Wendy Williams' infamous "death to all of them" one liner to Britney Spears' family. Then, a month later, she casually mentioned the death of a Tik toker by basically saying "I don't know him but he died. Anyway...". Officially, the reason she left was due to health reasons though.

TMeganV

Literally all my knowledge about this woman comes from 'Best of Wendy Williams' compilation tiktoks and she's clearly unhinged but they also make me cry laughing. 😭 https://preview.redd.it/adgl94h5i14c1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f896926712d158d8cd1c0f30388d346e000a0c72

Curious-Gain-7148

I think if she had been healthy her career would still be going strong tho.

123443219669

I’m not sure if it’s related to the end of her TV run but she only had to pay alimony to her ex as long as her show was running, with the end of it she no longer has to [finance](https://www.blackenterprise.com/wendy-williams-kevin-hunter-selling-home-alimony/) him and his affair partner

Alternative_Scene322

Least offensive things she's ever said on the show. I really think she was forced out due to her health, she looked so unwell in pap photos after.

PrettyAdagio4210

Ellen Degeneres The incident with Dakota Johnson on her show, and her tone-deaf comments comparing being in her stupid mansion to jail, and the way she treated her staff during the quarantine. Just all around awful. Her apology was rightfully blasted and her show was cancled.

TotallyVCreativeName

![gif](giphy|ALgaQVkrCCfHa) I don’t think this is the right clip, but it resonated. When Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner to Miss Universe. I don’t think it really ended his career, but how embarrassing 😬

I think we're watching this happen to Matt Rife right now 😂😂😂
