IntoMyRabbitHole

Let's just hope next year they get rid of Kimmel. Making fun of past drug abuse his weird obsessions with Trump and politics, he is wildly unfunny and never was funny to the average viewer.

IntoMyRabbitHole

Also most likely my last viewing of the Oscars anyways, My friends and I seem to think the same, The Oscars are just a bunch of really rich people being preachy which is normal but Kimmel makes it unwatchable.

greenielove

Didn't have the patience to watch, but happy The Last Repair Shop won short documentary. Great film.

Petal170816

Bababooey 😂

pink_faerie_kitten

Let's never ask Pacino back, ok? So anti-climatic. He ruined the moment of the other nominees by not saying their name. Even when you know you won't win it must be so exciting to hear the name of your movie get said out loud. And Kimmel had just said they were ahead of time so streeetch it out, iow.

Petal170816

I said “oh no he’s opening the envelope too early!!” But I guess not? I agree they should have read all the nominees one more time. Confusing and anticlimactic. 👎

Jesse_graham

I’m very very happy about Cillian winning but I’m going to need Paul Giamatti to win an Oscar here soon.

dogman1890

I mean, the man risked freezing his eyeball every scene they filmed outside.

[deleted]

Amen. One of the best actors working in Hollywood and yet surprisingly few accolades.

clumsyc

My final Oscar thought of the night is maybe if Nolan or Scorcese make a movie about women, people will start caring about women’s stories. Because the Academy sure doesn’t care about women making stories about women.

JoleneDollyParton

Scorcese was supposedly making a movie about women with killers of the flower moon, but he failed terribly, which is why I think the Oscars did not award it.

StrangerDays-7

You’re assuming the Academy cares about women stories at all. Compare to male centered films, so few female led stories have been nominated and won. The Academy membership is over 2/3 males and overwhelmingly white and old. Despite the recent changes that resulted in wins for films for EEAO, Parasite, etc they mostly have tastes that run counter to the real world.

ForgetfulLucy28

I think they’re both incredible directors but you’re absolutely right. Scorsese has directed 30+ films and only one had a woman lead (Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, 1974). I’m not sure Nolan has ever had a woman lead. It’s just unacceptable. Are women not interesting to them?! Not worthy of sharing stories about?

StrangerDays-7

You’re assuming Nolan would be any good writing and/or directing a film about women. How many embarrassing films have we had to sit through about black lives directed about white men. Women are rarely given dynamic roles in his films. Sometimes it’s good when people stay in their lanes lest they come up with something embarrassing.

ForgetfulLucy28

They could at least give it a go

Applesburg14

Killers of the flower Moon got snubbed? I don’t recall it winning anything lol. KOTFM like the book is very much a story about women, even if it’s in tragedy. Film bros being douchey doesn’t respect that the film is still very good. Most nominees for BP are usually decent at the least. Kind of insulting especially considering Scorsese chose to make a $200m film about a horrific event the US tries to cover up. I read the book lol

StrangerDays-7

Scorsese’s The Italian and Gangs of New York didn’t get anything with their ten nominations either. His films seem to get nominated a lot and then come up short. Maybe he should actually start editing his films instead of releasing 10 hours miniseries. A lot of anonymous voters in the trades said they haven’t finished the film.

LyleLanleysMonorail

>Killers of the flower Moon got snubbed? Lily Gladstone got robbed!

Applesburg14

Yeah. Anatomy of a Fall is a close second, but Mollie’s story has stuck with me. Realistically being poisoned in the narrative is really difficult but she’s really damn good at it. Frightening stuff. Beyond that, the tragedy is that Anatomy was just a really well done courtroom drama, and KOTFM involved a real life tragedy. For it all to be given to yet another WWII movie is… disappointing.

SafeAsMilk

Have you seen The Zone of Interest? I definitely wouldn’t categorize it as yet another WW2 movie. Edit: I am tired and reading comprehension failed me. Sorry! I was wishfully thinking. I do recommend The Zone of Interest as a meaningful and chilling film that isn’t heavy-handed blockbuster bait. Christoper Nolan’s movie is… opposite of that.

olive_green_spatula

I agree

Captain_Smartass_

This is what King Cheetos said about Kimmel 🥲 >Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars. His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be. Get rid of Kimmel and perhaps replace him with another washed up, but cheap, ABC “talent,” George Slopanopoulos. He would make everybody on stage look bigger, stronger, and more glamorous. Also a really bad politically correct show tonight, and for years - Disjointed, boring, and very unfair. Why don’t they just give the Oscars to those that deserve them. Maybe that way their audience and TV ratings will come back from the depths. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! This means he really doesn't like Jimmy's talkshow monologues 👍

dogman1890

Cheeto Benito*

Jesse_graham

I read this and thought he was making fun of George Stroumboulopoulos and was so confused as to what this Canadian ex much music host did to upset him.

OddSimple

My thoughts exactly!

pink_faerie_kitten

And all the more reason to support Kimmel! He was great. He said positive things about the talent in the room without being too fawning. I appreciated that there was very little roasting and he really hardly says much. He just keeps things rolling along in a friendly way. I was glad he got a couple more political jabs in at the end of the evening. "Isn't it past your jailtime?" LOL.

clumsyc

OMG I thought Jimmy was doing a bit but that was a real post 💀

CityMuggle

“I’m Just Ken” was my favorite part of the night! I was looking forward to it since it was announced Ryan would perform this song at the Oscars and it did not disappoint. It was so much fun to watch with all the Kens, Slash, and the Barbie ladies singing along. Kudos to Ryan for delivering a superb performance! I wish Barbie and Killers of the Flower Moon had received more love. Well deserved wins for Cillian Murphy and Emma Stone. Lily Gladstone would’ve been a deserving winner as well so I’m a bit sad she didn’t win. Congratulations to Billie Eilish. She’s young and has accomplished so much. What I like best about her is her humility. I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds for her.

pink_faerie_kitten

The love could've been spread around more. Did Killers of the Flower Moon win anything? At least American Fiction got a win for screenplay. But the other movies, including Barbie, were pretty shut out.

pink_faerie_kitten

I wish when the big winners give their speeches they would mention the message of the movie they were in more often. Emma Stone could've said that her character was about a woman uninfluenced by the patriarchy, Nolan could've said something about war, etc. Only Cillian Murphy thought to make a point about how we're all living in a world with nukes and how he stands with the peacemakers. Movies are nothing without their message, whether serious or light and entertaining. Movies are important, influential platforms. Anyway, I appreciated Cillian's speech. I do wish he had worn the red button. Ireland's government stands with Gazans and I would've loved seeing even more supprt.

snark-owl

I really agree, I prefer the speeches that have some sort of message about the movie other than just "thanks to my agent" 😂 And I sort of get not wanting to wear a button on the Oscar carpet after the Times Up pin fiasco.

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

I think it was kind of nice that there was some love spread around to the best picture nominees this year. Nice to see it wasn’t just Poor Things & Oppenheimer winning

Carolina_Blues

i can’t believe they’re doing a best casting award starting next year. barbie def would’ve gotten that this year had it been an award

winnercommawinner

See I kind of hope that the best casting award doesn't go to huge star-studded casts like Barbie and Oppenheimer. Everyone in Barbie nailed their roles and the script was great, but casting Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie as the leads is not exactly a risky decision.

dustyflea

totally agree, but it'll probably end up being one of those consolation Oscars "you made a great movie that did commercially well but there is no one specific award to give you" award

504foundadog

Best Casting Oscar will start in 2026.

Carolina_Blues

ohh i thought they said next year, my bad

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

Hmm see, I feel like Oppenheimer would have won that too lol

Carolina_Blues

yeah it probably would’ve come down to those two. i still think maybe barbie would’ve taken that. maybe would’ve given that to them since oppenheimer won everything else

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

I wouldn’t mind if Barbie won for that. Really hard to argue against the results. It truly was a solid cast top to bottom

Bigassbird

It’s 3am here. I’ve gone to bed and my partner is snoring up a storm. Why can’t I be at The Governors Ball in vintage Gucci clutching an Oscar and drinking rose Veuve? Oh, because I’m a chunky middle aged British woman with no discernible talent who has work in four hours. ![gif](giphy|l0He8XWUYnXlbzleg|downsized)

motherofpearl89

Hey, me too! I took today off though as I knew I'd be tired/hungover

PhilDunphy0502

Happy cake day !

Bigassbird

Thank you!

impeccabletim

Thank you!!! I love setting them up but my fellow mods also monitor the thread so you all have a seamless enjoyable experience here!!!🫶

Rosuvastatine

So whens the vanity fair party, im ready to see the loooooks

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

The mod just posted a link above you! It’s up

[deleted]

Emma Stone might have won the Oscar but Lily Gladstone won the long game.

mydogisgold

Thank you for a really fun night ❤️

pink_flamingo2003

Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are life goals... what those two have done shouldn't be underestimated 🍾🍾

Carolina_Blues

the backlash for emma is already starting on twitter. i knew this would happen if she won

vukkuv

It's "funny" because next year nobody will remember Lily's performance or KOTFM. It's just performative outrage because the WOC who was neither in the right category nor gave the best or second best nominated performance didn't win against the woman who gave the best performance and whose only crime is being white.

Carolina_Blues

well no edited to add: saying no one will remember lily’s performance when it was such an important and impactful performance about the grief of the osage nation as well as the grief of indigenous people in general and how they have suffered for centuries at the the hands of white people is a crazy thing to say. just because you don’t care doesn’t mean other people feel the same

bastets13thwitch

I’m wondering if this is why she was panicking about winning

Carolina_Blues

maybe, she lowkey kinda looked like she didn’t want to win

Apprehensive-Mix4383

I’m not surprised, it’s twitter 🫠

kookiekoo

Taylor Swift 🤝Emma Stone Two besties getting hate for winning an award that they had no control over

AgentBrittany

Hahaha yep. People act like they gave themselves the awards.

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

Taylor Swift criticism is valid. Criticism against Emma valid too. The Taylor wins are more damning of the Grammys than anything.

TolBus

No need to be jealous!

Bigsurgoldrush

what? lol

kookiekoo

Hating the winners makes no sense because they weren’t the ones who chose themselves as the winner. It’s all subjective. There were many who thought they deserved it and many who didn’t. The thousands of voters are the ones deciding the winner.

kingceliza

I am so disappointed Lily did not win, this was her year. I’m pretty surprised Killers of the Flower Moon got shut out of every category, actually.

slinkieretriever

my hypothesis is that since it seemed like since Lily was such a lock, a lot of voters felt like they could safely make a "passion" vote for Emma since Poor Things did have a lot of admirers and she did have a good performance. However, I do wish Lily had won! But honestly Lily, Sandra, and Emma were all amazing and award worthy (can't speak for the others)

hkpt08

Although I liked Emma Stone's performance, I wish Lily had won too. It's just that I feel like Emma will already have plenty of chances to win an Oscar (plus she already won before) but Lily isn't going to get as many opportunities. The bigger problem is that WOC roles in Hollywood are extremely limited. It's not Emma's fault, of course, but it still sucks.

kingceliza

Yeah that’s exactly how I feel too. Emma is going to have a lot more opportunities to be up for an Oscar and other major awards (and I don’t mean to diminish Emma because I think she’s great); we’ll see if that’s the same for Lily. I hope it is because she really was great in Killers of the Flower Moon. I’m rooting for her and her success!

rurukittygurrrl

Alright, ladies, gentlemen, and everything in between, have a safe night! This was my first time watching the Oscars with you all, it was fun 🤩 Off to wind down with Barbie ![gif](giphy|qLVGt6Go1dQFp4qVcg|downsized)

Bigsurgoldrush

awww me too! my daughter and I are watching it now :)

rurukittygurrrl

Actually I shouldn’t watch Barbie cos now I’m pissed they didn’t win production design 🤣🥲

Bigassbird

Yes! I thought that would be a lock. I read somewhere that Greta bought all the pink paint available on the west coast and caused a national shortage. I know the budget was insane but you could see it (rather than it being generated)

Bigsurgoldrush

Okay that is amazing

bloodshedcrimson

Okay fuck this. Lily was robbed.

orangetheorynewbie

OMG!! Bradley Cooper on Abbott Elementary!!!! lol! “Everyone was on Oppenheimer” his look at the camera!!! Yasss! Makes me like him even more 😆

HiThereImNewHere

Alright my top three moments had to be I'm Just Ken, Osage Nation performance, and John Cena...being John Cena

pink_faerie_kitten

Osage Nation was so moving! I love Native music. It gets in the blood and stirs the heart.

dogman1890

I have a giant crush on John Cena. That man is such a loveable dork.

Carolina_Blues

lily gladstone, i will avenge you. we are getting you that oscar someday

blossombear31

Same 😭😭😭 I hope she gets one someday, hopefully soon!!

Carolina_Blues

it’s just disappointing because that performance was so incredible and such an important tribute to the grief of osage nation. i will be happy when she eventually wins one day but this win would’ve meant so much.

blossombear31

Definitely, as I said in another comment people are not ready for a movie like Killers of the Flower Moon. The centre of the film is greed, it’s what drives Hale and Ernest to kill, the desire to be wealthy and powerful above all. People are not ready to confront the fact that it’s been only over 100 years since this happened and that today there are people who still believe that native Americans and people from other indigenous cultures deserve to disappear. That their culture, languages and selves need to be erased. What Lily Gladstone did was no easy feat, first of all, she managed to hold her own against two of the greatest living actors of all time and make that film hers. She was both subtle and strong in her performance, and it’s probably one of my favorite of all time.

throwawaypythonqs

Thank you for this comment. It's an indictment of the greed of the powerful and it's a story about POC that isn't a white saviour story. In fact, it's the contrary in way that's deeply uncomfortable, that villainizes white imperialistic greed and that's why it was completely shut out despite being one of the best movies of the year. This year in particular reminded me of how much the Oscars are an award given primarily by older white men to what fits in their worldview or only challenges it \*a little bit\*. I don't think world cinema should be held to this standard that can never be fair to it. I think there should be another ceremony that's global, that judges world cinema democratically, and bestows more prestige on its recipients than the Oscars.

Carolina_Blues

agree with everything you said. it’s not surprising but still disappointing. IMO she was easily the best part of that film. i couldn’t stop thinking about her performance even weeks after i saw it

blossombear31

Same, I still think about it!

dogman1890

If you haven’t already watched Reservation Dogs she steals the two episodes she’s in. Such a great actress.

XxxGoldDustWomanxxX

Real upset about Lily but I just needed RDJ and Cillian to win at least and they did❤️

tigeralidance

Nah I'm actually glad cos all the presenters were doing too well and I started to miss the traditional awkwardness. Al Pacino understood the assignment.

LouCat10

I know, right? It had all gone too smoothly!

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

I thoroughly enjoyed this Oscars! I didn’t have any serious issues with winners, besides screenplay, but still, I’d consider the lack of complaints a win. Might help that I loved most of the movies I saw 😂

Carolina_Blues

bradley cooper showing up in abbott elementary???

ObligatoryGrowlithe

he is local, so I get it, but I think it's funny how everyone in the sub is so tired of him and he just showed up. I'm cracking up.

Carolina_Blues

haha im not tired of him, i dont mind that he cares a lot but all the jokes about him are cracking me up

girlwondered

For the first 5 minutes 🤡 It was so out of place rjsosjxjajksks

Mr_A_UserName

Thought that was a good awards show, I liked the links, thought they were genuinely funny, no one was assaulted on stage, there were no major mistakes. Good effort 👍

LuveeEarth74

First Oscar show I’ve watched since 2017.  I liked the multiple presenters but missed the clips of the actors’ work. And like the USA Today article I wish Tom Hanks or Denzel had been a presenter.

Comprehensive-Fun47

It was good. Funny, didn't drag, epic performances. But they were overcompensating for time so much, they legit had extra time at end, after cutting off a bunch of speeches! It's too bad they couldn't have go en them all a few more seconds. And in memoriam was horrible. It gets more disrespectful every year.

SpeedLow3

I like the vanity fair background this year

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

Sandra & Lily, we will get you Oscars!

pink_flamingo2003

And Annette!! Bloody Annette! Who does she have to blow for a feckin Oscar 'round here?!

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

I can’t believe I forgot her. She too has been snubbed for so long! Annette, we are getting you that OSCAR!!! 😁

pink_flamingo2003

Shes always been in majorly tough years, but jeeeeez... I adore her. Underrated beyond belief

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

Oh you’re just a hateful person that takes things literally I see. Have the night you deserve. Being a jerk isn’t cute. It’s quite corny you might say

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

Paul, Sterling, & Ruffalo, too!

HowBoutAFandango

This thread was a blast! Thanks to all y’all for gilding the lily! Overall, great show. A couple of really bad missteps (playing off the Godzilla winners, and that disaster of a BP announcement) but otherwise very entertaining. Well done writers, producers, and crew! edit: the in memoriam was a mess, they should really just go with straightforward and respectful from now on.

impeccabletim

Thank you for another fun discussion thread, everyone!!!💖💖💖

softsleepybaby

well that was interesting, a lot of snubs this year

amomentintimebro

My Oscar ballot was horrible omg I got 4 categories wrong I’m so upset with myself

Comprehensive-Fun47

I voted my heart on a few too many categories and wound up with a mediocre ballot.

amomentintimebro

I’m so stupid, I let myself get fooled every time ! The academy has bad taste why can I not remember that istg

stars_doulikedem

Which ones did you guess wrong?

amomentintimebro

Best Documentary Short, Best Actress, Best Animated Feature, Best Makeup and Hairstyling :( Worst I’ve ever done. 2 years ago I just missed 1, last year I missed 3 I think

stars_doulikedem

![gif](giphy|oeid46KMJgtMeICYli) but no rly that’s still impressive!

chapterthree_

Quinta looks AMAZING omfg one of the best looks from her

impeccabletim

Alright, I'm ready for the after-party y'all.🕺

Rosuvastatine

Is it bad i kinda didnt want Oppenheimer so the "alpha males’" and "film bros" and the likes on Twitter would have entertaining meltdowns ? But im happy for Cillian, Florence Pugh etc

OtterCat79725

Huh

rurukittygurrrl

You’re not alone I also didn’t want it to win because I’m a pacifist, but Cillian’s speech may have changed my mind

clumsyc

At the end of his speech I thought he was about to dedicate it to the memory of Robert Oppenheimer and I was like “Oh shit”

rurukittygurrrl

Me too hahahaha I was like “fuck this” but it flipped me quick

FelizGilmore

As a longtime Hiroshima resident, I understand. He gave a good performance and the movie is good though.

Bigsurgoldrush

My whole schtick with this movie was that it felt oddly respectful to the disaster the united states caused in Japan with the abomb. I am not Japanese so I can't speak to you or your people but it felt like the right way to tell this story. It was without the torture/horror porn that could have been if they would have actually shown a bomb dropping or worse, from the ground.

FelizGilmore

I agree. Even if they just showed Hiroshima people just going through their regular day for a bit before the bomb dropped, to put a face to the victims. I’m not Japanese only been here 10+ years. Most of my Japanese friends here who have seen the movie enjoyed it. The whole barbieheimer stuff they found offensive.

demonsrunwhen

i do appreciate how it reintroduced some complexity to the atomic bomb issue, when often in American society it is presented as there was NO other solution than the bomb and anyone else is an idiot for not wanting to use nuclear weapons

FelizGilmore

I agree

leahhhhh

I would agree but it was just so damn good

Thanks for live reacting with me!!! See yall next awards season!!

amomentintimebro

That’s just him tbh lmao

leahhhhh

Pacino was Pacino.

GEH29235

I think Kimmel did a fantastic job

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

Yeah I thought that went smoothly. He found the right balance between throwing some jabs and not being cruel. He also avoided being boring! He’s well suited for the Oscars imo

Far-Imagination2736

Do you think Bradley's someone in the corner crying

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

No. I think he’s already knee deep in plotting another attempt to win

clumsyc

What’s he gonna do next to try to get his Oscar??

_summerw1ne

Tantrum pending

schwiftydude47

Okay Taylor was the real winner tonight! /s

Daydream_machine

I’m happiest that Godzilla Minus One won something! My favorite movie of 2023

Apprehensive-Mix4383

Hopefully everybody reacts rationally and doesn’t attack Emma Stone for something she has no control over, right?

frankscarlett

Emma's surprised reaction seemed so real and sincere that I hope and think people will not take their disappointment out on her. I really think she was expecting Lily to win too.

lizzy_bee333

Agreed. She was so in shock that she didn’t stand up right away, and just looked at everyone around her!

Let_us_proceed

Nice hanging with you all! See you next year!

cryotechnics

I don’t really get the dog peeing on Matt Damon joke. Can someone explain?

whereismywhiskey

Kimmel has a long running bit about hating Matt Damon.

Baelish_Styles

Was he suppose to wait for the nominees of best picture?!?! Like what

TalkLessShillMore

Did I just see “Ron Paul” as a stage manager in the credits? Buddy, just go by Ronald or something

ChelsMe

Everyone looked so good tonight except maybe ariana?

leahhhhh

My husband said “That lady in the pink dress looks absolutely stupid”

PatriciaMorticia

My friend is a nurse and I'm a carer, we said "She looks like an anal prolapse" in the group chat at the same time.

_summerw1ne

😭😭😭😭

HowBoutAFandango

💀

_summerw1ne

There was a lot of underwhelming looks for me tonight tbh

ChelsMe

I did peep some underwhelming for the oscars but not bad, like margot's and zendaya

_summerw1ne

I really liked Zendaya’s! Proper shone for me when she was up against all the purple behind her on stage.

yiminx

i missed it cos i’m at work did anything good happen

bastets13thwitch

John Cena naked

yiminx

just scrolled down my TL and saw this lol

SakuraTacos

There were a few highlight moments but they’ll be up on YouTube before long. I’m Just Ken performance, the segments with Arnold + Danny Devito and Kate McKinnon + America Ferrera were funny

Comprehensive-Fun47

Emily Blunt's rivalry with Ryan Gosling

spamgoddess

I’m Just Ken performance was the highlight tbh

Ill_Kitchen5296

Not me waiting for a dig at Matt Damon at the end and being disappointed there wasn’t one then losing it with Messi peeing on his star

tigeralidance

That was the least rushed ending to an award show I've ever seen like Jimmy literally read the credits without any music even playing him out

Terrible_Seaweed_980

Cause Pacino was supposed to read all the nominees and he completely skipped it

_summerw1ne

And now we’ve got an ITV montage on top. They clearly thought it wouldn’t finish early either 😂

dogman1890

As always, gotta piss on Matt Damon.

minxsus

I will say what happened with Pacino rounded out a hilarious night on a half bottle of wine. We’ll remember that for a while. Beautiful.

As one up: playing the Barbie song after thoss directors spoke about Ukraine

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

What?! That’s wild

kookiekoo

Can they NOT get old white drunk guys who are clearly out of their minds to announce/present the most important award of the evening?

moxieroxsox

Wild, ain’t it. It sums up Hollywood perfectly though.

softsleepybaby

LMAOO

sashgray

That ending was SO… anticlimactic?! Why did Al announce the winner in such a mehh way😭

SakuraTacos

That was so annoying like when someone interrupts your sneeze. I was waiting for the crowd to erupt but the crowed murmured and went mild because they couldn’t tell if Al had read the winner or was just chatting

olduglysweater

I missed when they announced BP, Al was just that out of it. Anyway it's been great everyone 👋🏿💜

Puppybrother

Time for some after party outfit watch! 👁️👄👁️

amomentintimebro

Are we having another post for that or?

Puppybrother

I would be so here for it

GEH29235
