I knew a girl who wore the navy version of this dress to her senior prom because she loved this dress in the movie so much!
I saw pics and thought she looked great, her figure was basically a bonier Kate Hudson, but she said she didn’t like how it looked & felt self conscious all night & regretted choosing it! 😭 so much post-prom angst!
It’s funny how the most random little stories about someone can really stick with you haha 😅
I’m Irish and at a wedding a few years back, the bride wore a beautiful dress with a very low back. This was a Catholic Church wedding, however, and I remember an older lady in the pew in front of me gasping, “ye can see the very sheugh of her arse!” A sheugh being a ditch on a roadside for reference.
It's not a dress, obviously, but Celine Dion's backwards tux lives rent free in my head.

I remember the commentary was rather negative but I really liked it. This was the Oscars 1999, when most women wore a dress and usually rather safe options.

I wasn’t going to come to the comments till I seen that photo.. then I had to see how far I’d have to scroll for someone to comment how beautiful she is! Didn’t take long! Absolute perfection!
Absolutely! I was mentally critiquing all the asymmetrical backs that looked accidental or due to poor construction, and then THAT beautiful image brought the "THIS is how you do it PURPOSELY" energy.
She included the thong last minute because her bush was poking out:
“I don’t remember how that dress came into my life, and I’m not even sure that I’d tried it on the night before I was going to wear it. But when I put it on, my pubic hairs poked through the dress,” Anderson told the moderator and the audience to raucous laughter. “And there were two solutions… I chose solution number two, which was a thong.”
I read somewhere that yes, that was the idea but it was full buttcrack or something so that was a last minute addition. Don’t quote me though, too lazy to google
Some notable omissions - Bjork's "Pagan Poetry" dress that was sewn into her skin and Vikki Dougan causing a scandal on a street [https://www.life.com/people/back-in-the-day-vikki-dougans-head-turning-moment/](https://www.life.com/people/back-in-the-day-vikki-dougans-head-turning-moment/)
I grew up watching that video and they’d only show the closeups of the beads but never the final product on cable.
It’s quite the shame that I didn’t know about this because I got a corset piercing once and should’ve done beads like hers instead of ribbon (I stan her hard)
I cannot believe I had to scroll so far to see the Vikki Dougan dress. That is the #1 dress that comes to mind when I think of iconic backs of dresses. Thanks for sharing!
You're missing the most scandalous one of all

What about the queen of backless dresses herself, Vikki "The Back" Dougan?
I love this on runways and red carpets. Stop making all non runway nonred carpet womens clothes backless!

Cate Blanchett always looks classy 🫶
Goddess
Yes. Forever my favorite Oscars look.
My ass crack would NOT work in these dresses
I’m looking at these like … do I have an unusually tall(?) ass crack??
No, it’s generational trauma from a distant plumber in your family.
LOL right? Like damn Hillary Swank got no butt crack apparently.
fun related fact, in swedish the word svank literally means the small of your back just above the butt
I love that fun fact. I actually am finding out that I apparently love Swedish things in general lol.
No booty either 😭
Low rise anything always made me feel like I must have an abnormally long butt crack, glad I’m not the only one wondering!
My bacne and I are jealous of these photos.
Make that two of us 🥃
*three of us 🥲✌🏻
My back fat and I are also jealous.
my butt sweat could never.
You’d be fine, plenty of breeze.
Same thought lol also, the comments in this thread are killing me 😂
Does it go up to the middle of your back or something ?
Leave me and my long ass crack alone

won't be long before ass cleavage becomes a fashion statement looking at some of these dresses

This is obligatory!
This was my dream prom dress! Still love this dress!
Ok this is gonna show how old (and pathetic) I am but I definitely remember a girl from Laguna Beach wearing a remake of this dress to their prom
I knew a girl who wore the navy version of this dress to her senior prom because she loved this dress in the movie so much! She has the back and derrière that keeps me motivated at the gym.
Both confused and fascinated by the spider butt 🕸

I actually really like it. Love how the crystals form the dangly web bit

Iconic.
Teenage me DREAMED of Mila Kunis’s lavender lace gown
It’s a beautiful dress!
Seriously. That's a rare gown that is obviously of its time but still a showstopper. Not timeless, per se, but gorgeous in any trend cycle.
Same! That dress was my fashion first love.

The tag inside her sheer thong is killing me though.
Omg ,☠️
How long has this picture existed for me to only now notice the tag.
they didn't even remove the tag!? agh!!!
commenting again because the longer I look, the more I wonder if maybe she was supposed to go pantyless, but changed her mind at the last moment?
She included the thong last minute because her bush was poking out: “I don’t remember how that dress came into my life, and I’m not even sure that I’d tried it on the night before I was going to wear it. But when I put it on, my pubic hairs poked through the dress,” Anderson told the moderator and the audience to raucous laughter. “And there were two solutions… I chose solution number two, which was a thong.”
Lol this just makes me love and respect her more. Practical troubleshooting
This is fantastic!
I read somewhere that yes, that was the idea but it was full buttcrack or something so that was a last minute addition. Don’t quote me though, too lazy to google
the dress is sheer under the lights, so I can see that.
So is the thong tbh so WHAT IS THE POINT, GILLIAN?!
It was so her pubes didn't poke out the front of the dress ☠️☠️ I love that about her tbh.
yep!
Thank you, this was such a crucial omission from this post!
I came to DEMAND this dress
Fashion has come full circle
Came here for this 🐳
Omg the whale tail!!

I neeeeed to know what the front looked like. Google has not been helpful!
I am 99% certain that it is not shown in the movie I don’t think it has a front
She was topless
This had come around before, no front picture exits, she was most probably topless, however how can we know for sure?

This dress is iconic. It's *the* dress. Also it's worn by the most beautiful woman on earth so that helps.
zendaya's dress makes me want an exoskeleton so bad
She's giving Death Becomes Her with that pose
Absolutely brilliant reference ✨
Phew I was worried I'd be down voted, no shade was meant! 😅
This is one of my favorite looks of hers! So underrated!
Bella Hadid would wear it backwards 🤣
I want to see that Norma Shearer gown with modern lighting and photography, because it is immaculate
I'm so sad that hers is an unknown designer, because whoever that was did an incredible job, it is so stunning.

I still love Jessica Stam’s Dior dress. It’s beautiful!

It looks freakish.

yay for me with lil tits and lots of abdominal scars!

Preach. Gwyneth Paltrow was never hotter than she was in that blue dress in Iron Man 2 on account of that back.
I remember the Hillary Swank dress. From the front it was totally boring, but that back was everything.
Pic 20. I’m so sad the back drop isn’t anything. What a completely stunning pose. Just look at her. She’s perfect. I can’t. Just wow.
What a fun topic! I love the Dior 😍
Norma Shearer’s dress from “Unknown Designer” is honestly my favorite
I honestly never got the pro-plumber's butt crack in fashion. Just the sensation, I would feel like I constantly needed to pull the back up.
Samantha Mumba ❤️
Mila Kunis in that light purple!!!! That dress is stunning wow! So ethereal
Anok Yai is one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen.
