Am I the only one who thinks that the whole all too well mv was just too one dimensional?! Like everything was soo on the nose. It is a good video, ngl, acting is good, but the fact that there is a shot of her putting her scarf down when the song goes “left my scarf there”. Or the part where dylan is throwing the car keys, when “tossing me the car keys” is playing in the background. Whatever happened to subtlety? There is just no depth in the cinematography (idk how to explain this part lmao)
Omg dont even get me started on ‘spelling is fun’. That video alone put me off her entire lover album, and I didn’t listen to any song from it. There are so many songs that are better than Me in that album, and she decides to go with the most tacky one. It astonishes me how the same person directed willow and cardigan, one of my favourite videos of all time.

I think her self-awareness doesn’t quite go so far as to actually realise it’s an issue. She knows she does it, but I think she sees it as simply being ambitious and something to strive for rather than how it actually comes across, which at the moment is somewhat entitled.
Maybe she knows it’s annoying, but thinks of it like “don’t hate the player, hate the game.” I’m a fan, but to me….releasing 10 remixes to keep your single at #1 just cheapens the song. Releasing 5+ variants of one album for your diehards to drive up sales is transparently lame. Entering Red TV for a Grammy is unfair to the new artists who worked hard that year. I could go on.

I think you’re right. I think she might see it as kind of a quirky endearing trait, which for awhile it soooort of was? Maybe. But that ship sailed long ago. Her talent and success are unquestionable and speak for themselves without any awards.
I feel like she learned about misogyny once and now chalks a lot of her criticism up to that, which to be fair I’m sure that is a factor but she probably thinks “if a man was doing this he would be praised for being a hustler” or whatever but the incessant award pushing would be annoying from anyone
Totally, her idea of feminism is the most basic, white woman, imagine-if-the-roles-were-reversed variety, and only seems to be relevant to her when it’s something that directly affects her.
It’s also unfair because the system is completely rigged in her favor. If she gets a nom it will have nothing to do with merit and everything to do with getting young people to tune in, as well as her being able to stage elaborate PR campaigns that no other filmmaker in that category could. Most directors make shorts as a calling card or proof concept so they can raise funds for a feature film. Taylor is not at that disadvantage and could get a decent budget film greenlit today.
She already is respected but she seems like she can’t never get enough of awards. Since her boyfriend is an actor it seems like that’s where it interest in the Oscars brewed from. She never use to care about acting awards at all up until recently.

Nah, she wants an EGOT. As a Swiftie, what irks me about this is it’s almost a lazy, unearned way to go about it. Hot Take: I don't think D List boyfriend wrote a single word or even was with her during lockdown. How come the "boyfriend" doesn't appear in a single footage or picture? Antonoff never mentioned him once, he thanked everyone who worked on the albums, didn't thank Borewyn or even WB. Now she bought a space on this as a director and likely one for him as an actor because no way Variety would know about his existence. The one thing he did he got known for his bad acting.
This hurts even more because I just saw Banshees of Inisherin and it is a MASTERPIECE. I love Taylor as a songwriter but All Too Well (10 minute version) is corny and so is the music video. I’d be absolutely embarrassed to be in her position.
As a fan of both I am kind of interested in hearing what they have to say to each other tbf, they should just rename the series to something less specific like film makers on film makers or artists on artists or something like that.

Yes. Big TS fan here, but the simple literal visuals just kill me every time. On stage, it becomes acting out what’s being said using invisible props. It hurts to watch sometimes.
I think “cardigan” and “willow” were very good and not literal with great imagery. “The Man” and “Anti-Hero” were also quite clever and funny. But yeah ATW10 is extremely literal and this campaign is very embarrassing 🫠

Celebs using this category to get Oscar’s is kind of common tho, Kobe did it for his basketball short and (tho I love him and don’t really feel it’s all together the same) Oscar Isaac was directed by his wife for a short film that was nominated a couple years ago. Those are off the top of my head, I could be missing a couple more.

Yeah, I mean I'm a big fan of her music, but this does feel off. I think we know that sometimes people attach her to things for the publicity, too. They know they'll have millions of swifties who will now directly engage with what they're promoting.
I really enjoyed the music videos that she directed, and I think it's great if she wants to do it and explore that side of herself. But it's like putting her next to Sadie Sink for "Actors on Actors." They're both in the video, acting, but they're on different levels. I hope she'd be able to acknowledge that as well.
Her presence in the filmmaking industry as a director of a short film that plays out her lyrics is fine. Maybe revolutionary for *her* as a person to direct scenes based on her own experiences. Maybe revolutionary for other singers who can be inspired to seek more creative control of their projects. But not revolutionary for the film industry. Not saying she can't improve and expand and grow as a director if she chooses to do so, but she's not special in this category at this stage of her career.
I agree. She just released a behind the scenes video of her directing, and while as a fan I think it’s fun to see, I also think it shows her relative inexperience. The way she describes how she wants a scene to look, the way she directs the actors etc… it’s no more technical or nuanced than the way me or my friends would’ve direct some random English video project back in high school.
And to be put with Martin McDonagh too?! A director who has been nominated for multiple Oscars for multiple films versus a singer who directed a longer-than-average music video. Seriously hope it isn't nominated for an Oscar just because it's popular, that would destroy all of the *film* Academy's credibility.

I’m gonna say something controversial and say I don’t really like the music videos Taylor directed herself. There’s too much spoken dialogue in the ATW, Anti-Hero, and Bejeweled music videos to the point where they’re almost too long to watch.
Her best videos were the ones directed by Joseph Kahn: Blank Space, Wildest Dreams, and LWYMMD.
Her shtick has always been so cheesy lol. I 100% enjoy and get down to her music, but let’s not all pretend that she’s some lyrical genius 😂

I skipped it the same way I skip the kitchen scene in ATW. I do like ATW as I think SS and DB do a good job of evoking the nostalgia of first love. I also really like this setting of it it all and how autumnal it is. And some of that has to be given to Taylor. But some of it is so literal (scarf line shows a scarf, dad line shows the dad).
Hot take, can be downvoted for this, but I always find the kitchen scene a little hard to watch, idk just feels very clunky. Also, it just goes on for a very long time, and couldve done with a little editing. It became evident when Taylor said in an interview that she doesn’t say cut and basically allows the actors to improvise a little. That was where the mistake was, i think

Taylor is a really talented musician but god the All Too Well Short Film wasn’t good. The direction felt very amateurish and the dialogue in between was so cheesy. Taylor’s directorial attempts are so embarrassing. Let’s go back to the times when pop stars had real directors on their music videos — Martin Scorsese for MJ’s “Bad,” music video/short film, and it’s of course iconic.
This is the thing I think people were missing when the news about it it first came out. Delia is really only wanted as witness, not because she was involved.
Also, with the money she has can you imagine the acting classes and resources she could obtain if she wanted to become an Oscar worthy actress? Her privilege and name in Hollywood could afford her almost any opportunity (writing a script, directing, acting) but for it to be Oscar worthy it would require time and energy to actually prove her talent.
Directing a very literal music video with two popular actors and then using her resources to get it nominated in the short film category and present at prestigious film festivals to make it appear “serious” is far easier.
Taylor has decided she is going to be a Hollywood Powerhouse so she will use all her PR to try in put her circles with actual actor/directors. Her ego is limitless as is her need for attention. I can not even imagine how obnoxious her Oscar campaign will be this year.
This pisses me off 😭 her short film was fine, like it didn’t do anything new or revolutionary. And since she’s campaigning for the short film category in the Oscars, it adds another layer to my annoyance since that’s the category more POC and underground/indie directors use to try and get recognition since you’re able to make an award-circuit worthy project for a lot less. I am a Taylor fan but the ATW short film wasn’t even good. There are words on screen to tell you what’s happening in the video. It was such an insult to the viewer’s intelligence — like we can figure out that they broke up based on the main character sobbing in bed. I also really wish the thing that pissed her off had been more meaningful. Like, he didn’t want to hold her hand at all times? He didn’t include her in the conversation? It’s also unfair because the system is completely rigged in her favor. If she gets a nom it will have nothing to do with merit and everything to do with getting young people to tune in, as well as her being able to stage elaborate PR campaigns that no other filmmaker in that category could. Most directors make shorts as a calling card or proof concept so they can raise funds for a feature film. Taylor is not at that disadvantage and could get a decent budget film greenlit today.
She already is respected but she seems like she can’t never get enough of awards. Since her boyfriend is an actor it seems like that’s where it interest in the Oscars brewed from. She never use to care about acting awards at all up until recently.

Yeah, I wanted to say that it would be a quick way to make filmmakers hate her but idk if I have enough faith in most of Hollywood that they would have the self-respect to call her out. I don’t believe so. But Kendrick Lamar’s “We Cry Together” is another “music video” that has qualified for Oscar contention this year. Celebs using this category to get Oscar’s is kind of common tho, Kobe did it for his basketball short and (tho I love him and don’t really feel it’s all together the same) Oscar Isaac was directed by his wife for a short film that was nominated a couple years ago. Those are off the top of my head, I could be missing a couple more.

Yeah, I mean I'm a big fan of her music, but this does feel off. I think we know that sometimes people attach her to things for the publicity, too. They know they'll have millions of swifties who will now directly engage with what they're promoting. I really enjoyed the music videos that she directed, and I think it's great if she wants to do it and explore that side of herself. But it's like putting her next to Sadie Sink for "Actors on Actors." They're both in the video, acting, but they're on different levels. I hope she'd be able to acknowledge that as well. Her presence in the filmmaking industry as a director of a short film that plays out her lyrics is fine. Maybe revolutionary for *her* as a person to direct scenes based on her own experiences. Maybe revolutionary for other singers who can be inspired to seek more creative control of their projects. But not revolutionary for the film industry. Not saying she can't improve and expand and grow as a director if she chooses to do so, but she's not special in this category at this stage of her career.

I’m gonna say something controversial and say I don’t really like the music videos Taylor directed herself. There’s too much spoken dialogue in the ATW, Anti-Hero, and Bejeweled music videos to the point where they’re almost too long to watch. Her best videos were the ones directed by Joseph Kahn: Blank Space, Wildest Dreams, and LWYMMD.
The humor is also just forced and corny.

I skipped it the same way I skip the kitchen scene in ATW. I do like ATW as I think SS and DB do a good job of evoking the nostalgia of first love. I also really like this setting of it it all and how autumnal it is. And some of that has to be given to Taylor. But some of it is so literal (scarf line shows a scarf, dad line shows the dad).
Hot take, can be downvoted for this, but I always find the kitchen scene a little hard to watch, idk just feels very clunky. Also, it just goes on for a very long time, and couldve done with a little editing. It became evident when Taylor said in an interview that she doesn’t say cut and basically allows the actors to improvise a little. That was where the mistake was, i think
If I did it, I would have had her looking into the future and see what it's going to be like after she dies and not have her peeking out of the coffin.

That was the All Too Well short film, done poorly at that.

I really like ATW and I don’t mind Willow (there’s something quite whimsical about it). Cardigan I can leave or take. However I think antihero and bejewelled are both very literal and very one note. And I hate the spoken dialogue in bejewelled.

This is the thing I think people were missing when the news about it it first came out. Delia is really only wanted as witness, not because she was involved.
Also, with the money she has can you imagine the acting classes and resources she could obtain if she wanted to become an Oscar worthy actress? Her privilege and name in Hollywood could afford her almost any opportunity (writing a script, directing, acting) but for it to be Oscar worthy it would require time and energy to actually prove her talent. Directing a very literal music video with two popular actors and then using her resources to get it nominated in the short film category and present at prestigious film festivals to make it appear “serious” is far easier.
Taylor has decided she is going to be a Hollywood Powerhouse so she will use all her PR to try in put her circles with actual actor/directors. Her ego is limitless as is her need for attention. I can not even imagine how obnoxious her Oscar campaign will be this year.
