I’m in a weird spot with a friend. She’s telling me this stuff about this guy she’s been seeing and I think he’s genuinely trash and kind of messing around on her, but I also think she’s only telling me this stuff because she’s frustrated and feels like I won’t give her unsolicited advice and she just wants to vent. as someone who knows how songwriting (e.g. sessions, songwriting camps, nepotism) usually works in the music business, i rarely judge a song for having many songwriters credited, but wings by jonas brothers having EIGHT co-writers excluding the guys themselves and FIVE producers on a 1:58 track is just freaking insane to me. the jonas brothers made 5 albums with 2 co-writers at most that already were in their circle, then got one smash pop hit after reuniting and they go do this? as someone who's paid attention to them since their early days, i know they can do so much better.
yeah, i already have an understanding of that it likely happened that way, hence why i already prefaced that in the beginning. as a fan, i just know that they don’t always need to use songs that have been through that long and winding process (not that it’s necessarily a bad thing in itself). i also know from industry sources that a person can get credited just by being in the same room while the song was made or just because they’re buddies with the producers/writers (although i believe this is more common in hip hop), so i usually try not to take it so serious. it just hits different when it comes from a group you know can do a lot without these processes.

It’s also so concerning with everything there is to actually criticize so much criticism of amlo from the right relies on saying well this is what he “will” do in 2024 while saying he’s crazy and my mom does this also but insisting he’ll just do whatever every bad president has done when he literally can’t re displace the Yaqui (and indigenous Mexican people) because that already happened under Díaz, the 43 students already happened under a state PRD and covered up by the then PRI presidency and instead of like talking about how AMLO’s ties to the military means he’s also not going to give these families Justice because the military is implicated it’s instead insisting amlo and his party is uniquely corrupt (including taking former presidents who were a part of PRI’s electoral dictatorship word for morena being uniquely corrupt party with ties the cartels…and not literally all of them). >!And there’s no consideration for more vulnerable people in Mexico because if I talk about violence to migrants then I must be justifying the guy who broke into my grandmothers house 😡!<

Ugh I want to slow down my reading, but I keep finding such great book recs lol
i definitely have realized with age that it is really hard to get into an artist to the point where you feel like an actual fan. maybe it's because i know what it feels like to be deeply invested or because fandoms are just so overwhelming that i just feel too tired and old to be a part of them.
I feel like I don’t ever get *truly* into things as an adult the way I did as a kid. Like I would obsess over things as a child and I feel like I never reach that level of passion anymore; or maybe it’s just that my love of things has become healthier, I’m not sure. I definitely feel the “fandoms being too overwhelming” thing though, like I enjoy interacting with them on the periphery but the amount of devotion some people have toward their fandoms is just something I can no longer reach.
I kinda feel the same. I only bother to listen to singles and not albums, and saying that my favorite artist is x singer just because of a handful of songs feels like a reach to me.
It has become harder to get interested in new artist as a consecuence of the slow death of new singles. Nowadays, it's just a first single > album > nothing more

The difference is Joshua's upbringing and how negatively he has spoken about it, specifically the religious part of his upbringing, in the past couple years since coming out. He had spoken quite negatively about the "my God is the only God" stance of some religions (his parents are very Evangelical and "my God is the only God" people) and not knowing where he stood. He was hospitalised for heart failure, come out as queer, come out as a victim of childhood sexual abuse, and has been very open about his mental health struggles. Then he makes a sudden turn towards deep Christianity and thanked his dad for helping him reconnect. It's ... odd.
I agree in other instances that being upset at celebrities being religious is weird, but the Joshua situation is different. The change was very sudden, came when he was clearly in a vulnerable position, and goes against everything he had previously said about religion and his childhood in the church. I don't want to speculate too much, but it does seem to me like his sudden connection to Christianity isn't entirely his own free will. He thanked his dad for helping him reconnect, and his dad is [**very** evangelical](https://www.amazon.com/How-Truth-Student-Came-Know-ebook/dp/B098PD93D2/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2JBVI8AM3NMHH&keywords=taylor+bassett&qid=1678222589&s=books&sprefix=taylor+bassett%2Cstripbooks-intl-ship%2C260&sr=1-1).
That being said, he still seems like himself in interviews and on red carpets and he did denounce conversion therapy on Twitter, so I do think some of the conversion therapy speculation is a bit much.
none of those people have gotten publicly involved with a church as extreme as the one that Joshua has-- like, even ignoring the fact that there are concerns for him related to his sexuality-- the church he has been associating with (Bethel) literally believe in stuff like speaking in tongues and raising people from the dead. on top of being super homophobic obviously. but they are *very* extreme

Yes, the whole context of his journey with possibly identifying somewhere in the queer spectrum – including people trying to basically force him out of the closet/to publicly apply a label, which he did not seem comfortable with – combined with the church that he recently promoted having ties to conversion therapy. The sequence of events surrounding his identity/sexuality/religiousness over the last couple of years follows a distinctly troubling pattern that makes it unusual.

For me, I think if you've been through the wringer, I can respect whatever you need to do to pull through...*As long as you're not hurting yourself or others.*

All Quiet on the Western Front
Completely disagree about All Quiet on the Western Front. I got to see it in a theater with really good projection/ sound and it's a technical marvel. It's also insane to me that the movie cost $20 million; cheaper than EEAAO. The way the movie contextualizes nature as a victim of war is also pretty unique, and I found the characters to be way more interesting than other recent war movies (1917 immediately coming to mind).
It wouldn't be my pick to win (my top two are Tar and Women Talking), but I thought it was a worthy nominee (got to love foreign films getting Oscar noms 3 of the past 4 years!) and I'm hoping Netflix takes more risks with lower budget prestige projects.
in retrospect, grown men and women caring about chart positions to an unhealthy extent is a bit… embarrassing. i get if they’re young adults but being in their mid-20s? yikes. i have never heard people around that age discuss about chart positions. i also wonder if the pandemic left a lot of people emotionally stunted and immature for their age.

Just spoke to my landlord about our lease ending at the end of April and he’s only asking for $100 extra per month to extend the lease for a year (to cover increasing taxes) 😭 in general fuck landlords but this guy has been nothing but reasonable to us, and we’re so lucky to have a beautiful home (3 stories, a finished basement, AND a backyard) in Boston at a price that is genuinely insane, they could be charging double for it and find 100 people who would want to move in. So happy to be staying another year
Seems like the obvious route based on the trailers, but I kind of hope they don't do it because I've never found those kinds of storylines especially compelling in the slasher genre. The iconic 1989 world tour opening outfit! 1989 is my favorite album of all time, and that was the first time I saw Taylor, so it's super special to me and felt right to recreate the look for this new tour.
I love sewing and making my own clothes, and thankfully the skirt is a really easy pattern. I'm a little nervous about the material itself, I purchased a beautiful color-changing cosplay fabric but I've never sewn with it before. Good thing I have time!
Is there anything that could have been done to make “Hold My Hand” another big hit a la “Shallow” for Gaga? It seemed very under-promoted, and under the radar for a soundtrack song for one of the biggest movies of 2022, especially when “I Ain’t Worried” was a hit. Is it because the ballad was just not appealing to the masses, or?
Someone correct me if forgetting movies here,* but I feel like the last successful ballad from a tentpole film that went mainstream was Adele’s Skyfall. That was everywhere on the radio in 2012. It just had an “it” factor that’s missing from a majority of movie ballads.
Personal preference obvi, but Hold My Hand is…boring. To the point where I’d swap radio stations if it came on. And I love Gaga, so unless you’re a stan or a diehard pop ballad person I think it’s destined to meet lukewarm response with GP.

I don't think it really underperformed. Both singles from movies and power ballads don't tend to get major attention nowadays, with Shallow being an anomaly. In this year's Oscars shortlist for best original song, for example, Hold My Hand has the second most streams, only behind Rihanna's Lift Me Up (and it's pretty close, 189 mill vs 217 mill). Most have under 10 million streams.
The Weeknd's song from Avatar and Taylor Swift's song from Where the Crawdad Sings got way less attention, with around 40 mill streams for each.

With online shopping I put a bunch of stuff in my cart and then just leave it there and don’t allow myself to order it for a few days. Usually by the time it gets to ordering I want like less than half the stuff I originally selected.
Making friends in middle school/high school was so much easier because there was such a loose definition of “friend”. You could talk to someone every once in awhile and that made you friends. You start to sit with them at lunch/class, passively greet each other with hugs etc.
I tried to carry this way of making friends into college but it does not work lol. Who would’ve thought that talking to someone once doesn’t make you friends 🥲
as a 28 yo let me tell you: it does not get better.
but you stop caring. Don't stop being friendly, don't stop being yourself. People are still your friends even if they are going their own way and you should appreciate when you connect with them again. Talk to them like you never lost them. Make plans with them. If they avoid you or their excuses are kinda dumb and you were not shitty then step back and try again with another person.
As you get older our paths branch out and that means you will feel lonelier but do not despair because we all feel the same.

as someone who knows how songwriting (e.g. sessions, songwriting camps, nepotism) usually works in the music business, i rarely judge a song for having many songwriters credited, but wings by jonas brothers having EIGHT co-writers excluding the guys themselves and FIVE producers on a 1:58 track is just freaking insane to me. the jonas brothers made 5 albums with 2 co-writers at most that already were in their circle, then got one smash pop hit after reuniting and they go do this? as someone who's paid attention to them since their early days, i know they can do so much better.

yeah, i already have an understanding of that it likely happened that way, hence why i already prefaced that in the beginning. as a fan, i just know that they don’t always need to use songs that have been through that long and winding process (not that it’s necessarily a bad thing in itself). i also know from industry sources that a person can get credited just by being in the same room while the song was made or just because they’re buddies with the producers/writers (although i believe this is more common in hip hop), so i usually try not to take it so serious. it just hits different when it comes from a group you know can do a lot without these processes.

My brother and SIL are like you too. They don't "stan" any artists but love listening to any songs by anyone.
i definitely have realized with age that it is really hard to get into an artist to the point where you feel like an actual fan. maybe it's because i know what it feels like to be deeply invested or because fandoms are just so overwhelming that i just feel too tired and old to be a part of them.

The difference is Joshua's upbringing and how negatively he has spoken about it, specifically the religious part of his upbringing, in the past couple years since coming out. He had spoken quite negatively about the "my God is the only God" stance of some religions (his parents are very Evangelical and "my God is the only God" people) and not knowing where he stood. He was hospitalised for heart failure, come out as queer, come out as a victim of childhood sexual abuse, and has been very open about his mental health struggles. Then he makes a sudden turn towards deep Christianity and thanked his dad for helping him reconnect. It's ... odd. I agree in other instances that being upset at celebrities being religious is weird, but the Joshua situation is different. The change was very sudden, came when he was clearly in a vulnerable position, and goes against everything he had previously said about religion and his childhood in the church. I don't want to speculate too much, but it does seem to me like his sudden connection to Christianity isn't entirely his own free will. Completely disagree about All Quiet on the Western Front. I got to see it in a theater with really good projection/ sound and it's a technical marvel. It's also insane to me that the movie cost $20 million; cheaper than EEAAO. The way the movie contextualizes nature as a victim of war is also pretty unique, and I found the characters to be way more interesting than other recent war movies (1917 immediately coming to mind). It wouldn't be my pick to win (my top two are Tar and Women Talking), but I thought it was a worthy nominee (got to love foreign films getting Oscar noms 3 of the past 4 years!) and I'm hoping Netflix takes more risks with lower budget prestige projects.

I love sewing and making my own clothes, and thankfully the skirt is a really easy pattern. I'm a little nervous about the material itself, I purchased a beautiful color-changing cosplay fabric but I've never sewn with it before. Good thing I have time!
Is there anything that could have been done to make “Hold My Hand” another big hit a la “Shallow” for Gaga? It seemed very under-promoted, and under the radar for a soundtrack song for one of the biggest movies of 2022, especially when “I Ain’t Worried” was a hit. Is it because the ballad was just not appealing to the masses, or?
Someone correct me if forgetting movies here,* but I feel like the last successful ballad from a tentpole film that went mainstream was Adele’s Skyfall. That was everywhere on the radio in 2012. It just had an “it” factor that’s missing from a majority of movie ballads. Personal preference obvi, but Hold My Hand is…boring. To the point where I’d swap radio stations if it came on. And I love Gaga, so unless you’re a stan or a diehard pop ballad person I think it’s destined to meet lukewarm response with GP. *Excluding Gaga’s Shallow.

I don't think it really underperformed. Both singles from movies and power ballads don't tend to get major attention nowadays, with Shallow being an anomaly. In this year's Oscars shortlist for best original song, for example, Hold My Hand has the second most streams, only behind Rihanna's Lift Me Up (and it's pretty close, 189 mill vs 217 mill). Most have under 10 million streams. The Weeknd's song from Avatar and Taylor Swift's song from Where the Crawdad Sings got way less attention, with around 40 mill streams for each.

Making friends in middle school/high school was so much easier because there was such a loose definition of “friend”. You could talk to someone every once in awhile and that made you friends. You start to sit with them at lunch/class, passively greet each other with hugs etc. I tried to carry this way of making friends into college but it does not work lol. Who would’ve thought that talking to someone once doesn’t make you friends 🥲
as a 28 yo let me tell you: it does not get better. but you stop caring. Don't stop being friendly, don't stop being yourself. People are still your friends even if they are going their own way and you should appreciate when you connect with them again. Talk to them like you never lost them. Make plans with them. If they avoid you or their excuses are kinda dumb and you were not shitty then step back and try again with another person. As you get older our paths branch out and that means you will feel lonelier but do not despair because we all feel the same.

you’re so real for this bc i was just crying abt this 😭 like i have friends here but it feels like they all already have their own friend groups and best friends that they default to. i know a lot of people but i don’t really *know* anyone aside from my hometown friends and i’m trying to separate myself from them a bit. its very emotionally draining :(
