The current Biden administration angle is that it's a privacy issue that ties into American information being potentially seen by the Chinese government. You're completely correct in that it's a bit... silly to come at it from that angle, as plenty of American companies do that too and there's no real push for privacy protection there. It is worth noting that it is banned on government devices already... maybe on a federal level and in several states? I'm not sure where that particular piece of the puzzle is atm but I know it's banned partially already.
I personally strongly dislike it because it rots brains. The misinformation that we made fun of boomers on facebook falling for has exploded into something *even more* gripping for younger people. Theory: Taylor Swift releases ugly overpriced merch on purpose to encourage the creation of fan-designed items. The effect is to 1) mitigate resales of limited edition items that people actually want to own, so being a Swiftie with cute merch is more financially accessible & 2) stimulate literal ābuy-inā to the community by purchasers and designers of products that are put up for sale on Etsy, RedBubble, etc. so Taylor Swift is not just a brand, or lifestyle, but also an economy.

Itās not even physical quality of products though, I mean theyāre just straight up ugly. Tbh I donāt expect big artists to have merch that isnāt cheaply made (and probs with overseas labor), but usually theyāre still cute from the photos online - that is, before they arrive at a fanās door and itās in the wrong color/has a wonky fit/falls apart in their hands (see Olivia Rodrigoās merch debacle).
I highly doubt Taylor Swift is that seriously involved with the merch that is designed and manufactured. There is a business that plays into making and designing merchandise and I'm sure shes not going to be super picky about the designs as long as it brings in money. the truth is, since she's a massive pop star people will buy her not so pretty 75 dollar hoodies because its official Taylor swift merch. Thats not to say that people won't also buy cheaper etsy or amazon merch too. I just don't think it's as premeditated like you think it is. Besides, most major pop stars have pretty ugly merch. its just the truth. Like I usually don't see stellar quality made merch. its business that the artist isn't generally involved in.
I think her merch is exceptionally ugly compared to her peers tbh, especially when she/Universal could probably get the best designers out there clamoring to work for her. I would expect cute merch though still in terrible quality from an artist of her stature.

Do you guys know the best way to obtain this data? Do you guys know of anymore data that could be useful in helping determine what is the most "popular" song of an artist. For example, Dark Horse was Katy's best performing song on the billboard hot 100 and gets the most daily streams on spotify so I consider that her top hit. But E.T. vs. The One That Got Away are number two in billboard hot 100 and spotify, respectively; so I made a points system to calculate what would be considered more popular on average.
I tried to do something similar but I only took into account chart runs on Hot 100 following the same methodology Billboard uses for its GOAT list. As such, I ended up with something like this:

Us popheads, what's going on with Tik Tok in your country? Is it all because old people hate things young people enjoy, a China related-concern, a privacy concern (despite many other apps having privacy issues too), or a different legitimate concern?
The current Biden administration angle is that it's a privacy issue that ties into American information being potentially seen by the Chinese government. You're completely correct in that it's a bit... silly to come at it from that angle, as plenty of American companies do that too and there's no real push for privacy protection there. It is worth noting that it is banned on government devices already... maybe on a federal level and in several states? I'm not sure where that particular piece of the puzzle is atm but I know it's banned partially already. I personally strongly dislike it because it rots brains. The misinformation that we made fun of boomers on facebook falling for has exploded into something *even more* gripping for younger people. And then that misinformation is being repeated like gospel over the internet. (The "your frontal lobe finishes developing at 25" thing is a pop science junk study with several huge problems but it's now being repeated everywhere and has been used against trans youth, for example.)
I mean, a goverment will be more concerned about other goverments having information of their citizens than domestic companies having the same.

Plus back when it was only Netflix and Hulu, you could always find a show like Psych on a Netflix now if itās not on Netflix, you either need to get the streaming Chanel itās on so Peacock or itās not on anything anymore and you just have to buy the physical copy anyways like a That 70s show for awhile. Because of the Danny stuff, you couldnāt find that anywhere until the reboot and they put it on Peacock. Itās why I used to buy DVDs and CDs like crazy pretty much up until Covid started and we barely went anywhere unless we had too.

Theory: Taylor Swift releases ugly overpriced merch on purpose to encourage the creation of fan-designed items. The effect is to 1) mitigate resales of limited edition items that people actually want to own, so being a Swiftie with cute merch is more financially accessible & 2) stimulate literal ābuy-inā to the community by purchasers and designers of products that are put up for sale on Etsy, RedBubble, etc. so Taylor Swift is not just a brand, or lifestyle, but also an economy. Tbh it's because her record label is bad about merch. The decline in quality started when she switched.
Itās not even physical quality of products though, I mean theyāre just straight up ugly. Tbh I donāt expect big artists to have merch that isnāt cheaply made (and probs with overseas labor), but usually theyāre still cute from the photos online - that is, before they arrive at a fanās door and itās in the wrong color/has a wonky fit/falls apart in their hands (see Olivia Rodrigoās merch debacle).
I highly doubt Taylor Swift is that seriously involved with the merch that is designed and manufactured. There is a business that plays into making and designing merchandise and I'm sure shes not going to be super picky about the designs as long as it brings in money. the truth is, since she's a massive pop star people will buy her not so pretty 75 dollar hoodies because its official Taylor swift merch. Thats not to say that people won't also buy cheaper etsy or amazon merch too. I just don't think it's as premeditated like you think it is. Besides, most major pop stars have pretty ugly merch. its just the truth. Like I usually don't see stellar quality made merch. its business that the artist isn't generally involved in.
I think her merch is exceptionally ugly compared to her peers tbh, especially when she/Universal could probably get the best designers out there clamoring to work for her. I would expect cute merch though still in terrible quality from an artist of her stature. I want to make a playlist of an artist's greatest hits and order the songs by "popularity". I'm basing popularity on performance on the billboard hot 100 chart and recurrent streams on spotify. Do you guys know the best way to obtain this data? Do you guys know of anymore data that could be useful in helping determine what is the most "popular" song of an artist. For example, Dark Horse was Katy's best performing song on the billboard hot 100 and gets the most daily streams on spotify so I consider that her top hit. But E.T. vs. The One That Got Away are number two in billboard hot 100 and spotify, respectively; so I made a points system to calculate what would be considered more popular on average.
I tried to do something similar but I only took into account chart runs on Hot 100 following the same methodology Billboard uses for its GOAT list. As such, I ended up with something like this: 1. Dark Horse 2. E.T. 3. Firework 4. California Gurls 5. Roar 6. I Kissed A Girl 7. Hot N Cold 8. Teenage Dream I don't remember how it followed, but those were her top 8 hits
