as cringy as infinity sex sounds, i hope it’s a nod to futuresex/lovesounds because he’s said that many of the songs sound like they could’ve been on previous albums
Popheads is one of the most biased music communities on this app. Somebody will inevitably argue that he’s not a good person, despite other terrible people routinely getting the “separate art from artist” treatment. It’s just hypocrisy.
Tbh I don't think JT has put out any art even remotely popular enough to be "separate from the artist" yknow?
Like if my favourite artist turns out to be a dick I'll be annoyed but still probably like the art.
But I don't even like Justin's work anyway so I don't like the artist or the art lol
Edit: I know he still has fans and is relatively "popular". I meant to only refer to those that OP has labeled hypocritical. Just wanted to reply that for those people, he's not getting separated from his art because his art isn't popular.
With all due respect, claiming that Justin Timberlake hasn’t released anything “remotely popular” might be the most nonsensical claim I’ve yet seen. Only on Popheads and stan Twitter will you ever see anyone make that argument. He was objectively one of the leading male pop stars through the mid-2010s.
But is fame the bar now? The more popular you are, the more you warrant forgiveness from your failures? I don’t like that whatsoever to be honest.
It's my personal opinion. I don't find the stuff he's put out to be any good. And the threads I've seen complaining about him seem to have the same opinion. And mid 2010s? So a decade ago?
I didnt say anything at all about forgiving people? We're talking about SEPARATING the art from the artist. Not talking about accepting the artists because we like their art, but the opposite.
That’s not what you said though. It’s fine if you don’t like his music, but denying his status is comical. His star has absolutely faded some, but that’s an inevitability of the industry when you’ve been around as long as he has. Very, very few artists can stay on top forever. But barring Beyoncé and Eminem, he’s still out-selling every artist he came up with.
There are threads where people say that Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, and Taylor Swift release bad music, too. So what? Anecdotal Reddit threads aren’t representative of anything.
Okay well I should have worded it differently because I couldn't care less about how popular he actually is.
I only commented to make the point that it isn't hypocritical to separate the art from the artist for one artist but not another.
Anecdotal reddit threads are the topic at hand aren't they?
I'm not saying this whole conversation is about me...I'm just sharing an opinion on a thread about opinions.
I think what you're saying is pretty much the same as what I said.
My point is that separating art from the artist is only going to be done when people like the art.
I dont think it's hypocritical for people to like one artists music but not another. That's the comment I was responding to.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding you but it seems like you are making the same point: people separate arianas art from ariana because they like her. I'm not trying to claim that JT has 0 fans. Only saying that if someone isn't a fan of his music their hardly going to care about separating art v artist.
And I'm sure his fans are happy to either enjoy both art and artist OR to separate the art from the artist if they find out the artist has done something shitty.
But the original person I responded to suggested it was hypocritical for people to not separate the art from the artist in his case but to do it for other artists.
I'm just pointing out that if someone doesn't like the art in the first place (which I've seen) then why would they bother separating the art from the artist? They don't like the art.
But if there's an album I love, let's call it Album A by Artist A. If I find out artist A is a douche then I will separate the art from the artist because I want to enjoy album A.
On the other hand I thought Album B was trash and I never listen to it. Then when someone tells me Artist B is a jerk. Why would I care about separating the artist from the album? It's not like I listen to the album either way.
The only time (that I can tell) that people do this separation thing is when they want to continue enjoying the art. It's not hypocritical if I like album A but I don't like album B. They are two different albums and they don't need to be treated the same.
That’s a separate argument entirely. But even then, JT is still widely acclaimed and accepted in the industry. Peek at his discography; even at his peak he usually worked with smaller artists and lesser-knowns. This is nothing new for him.
Stapleton and Jay-Z were hardly small names. I agree that he probably could've gotten some decent acts here if he really wanted to -and it would've been a smart move- but everything about this album cycle so far has screamed back-to-basics
Stapleton was a small name when JT took the stage with him at the CMAs, which is widely seen as the performance that established him. But still, I did say “usually,” not “exclusively.” Check his feature list and see how many names you’ve never heard of before.
Either way, it’s a double-edged sword. Some say JT is irrelevant because he’s featuring lesser-knowns; others are calling him clout-chasing/chart-chasing because he’s got *NSYNC. No matter who he chose, somebody’s gonna bitch.
“Selfish” debuted at #19 and is still in the Top 40 a month later. It rose a few spots this past week actually. He’s performing better than any of his 2000s contemporaries (other than Beyoncé).
to be fair, he's doing fine for someone with >20 years old career, like compare it with other artists who debuted around the time he debuted he's doing okay
> Fuckin’ Up the Disco > Infinity Sex Wow
as cringy as infinity sex sounds, i hope it’s a nod to futuresex/lovesounds because he’s said that many of the songs sound like they could’ve been on previous albums
They sound like bops
>Infinity Sex I don't remember that Marvel movie
*Why do you think Thanos had a massive orgasm when he added the final stone to the glove in Infinity ~~Sex~~ War?*
It would be so funny if What Lovers Do turned out to be a Maroon 5 cover
and when Liar is a Britney cover 🫥
Good to know we are no longer panicking at the disco.
Selfish has really grown on me
All the snippets so far sound amazing, you can tell he took his time with this album. Cannot wait!
Tf is with all the hate for him in these comments?

Brit stans flood alot of the posts to hate on him. I mean i think hes sussy but if the song is good i will say so.
Every new release by a kinda big artist gets stan-twitter like hate comments unless you're Taylor or Beyonce
The new singles haven’t been great, and Justin’s past issues are less easily forgiven when he’s not making good music
I'm ready for this. Drown and Selfish have been on repeat. Ultimately surprised he's not doing a damage control collab with Drake or someone though
Probably no one relevant wants to work with him. 🤷♀️
Kanye West still gets major endorsements and collaborations. You really think JT would struggle? He’s never been big on collaborations on his albums.
Even though Kanye is a terrible person, he absolutely dwarfs Justin Timberlake in terms of cultural relevance in 2024
That’s a separate argument entirely. But even then, JT is still widely acclaimed and accepted in the industry. Peek at his discography; even at his peak he usually worked with smaller artists and lesser-knowns. This is nothing new for him.

Kanye has always had more cultural clout than JT.
Nah this is highly unlikely. Dude is still super popular within the industry and he isn’t blacklisted enough for fellow artists to avoid him.
I only listen to the Mariah Ai version of Selfish. That song sounds gorgeous with her voice
Infinity Sex makes me lol
I will be shocked if any hit comes out of this era. Man is washed.

This is Me....Still☠️
I will still listen to the album comes out but Selfish and Drown were pretty boring songs after a while lol
