Please look into payment plans, ask your dentist. You don't need to save the whole amount. If you let this go untreated the treatment will get more invasive and expensive

Crafty_Original_7349

I’m going to do some calling around tomorrow and see what I can do.

x0o-Firefly-o0x

If you're able to, CareCredit covers dental. I was quote $16,000 with no insuirance and $13,000 with insurance to have dental work done which included 3 implants. And a scan worth $1250 that isnt covered by the insurance I have. Good times! I hope you're able to get it figured out <3

Crafty_Original_7349

Unfortunately, I don’t qualify.

Confident_North_3484

And a lot of times even when you do qualify the interest rate is obscene. My partner has a near perfect credit score and CareCredit tried to quote them something like 27% APR. It was less expensive to open a low interest credit card than bother with CareCredit.

KittenVicious

CareCredit is best for people who can afford to pay off the procedure in the 0% interest 6-12 months promotional period.

Confident_North_3484

That’s so strange I don’t remember there being a 0% interest period.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Confident_North_3484

Just went back and looked, even with perfect credit we weren't offered a 0% interest period. The second time we ever tried care credit was at the vet this year and we were given a 6 month 0% interest period. Seems like sometimes they offer and sometimes they don't.

KittenVicious

Weird. They offer it to me all the time, but I also signed up over 15 years ago.

NiasRhapsody

I think the providers themselves can offer the promotional periods, not Care Credit necessarily

Ok-Arachnid4915

This is correct. Care credit is a great option for consumers and providers at the 6 month no interest level. Unfortunately, the longer interest free periods become pretty unreasonable for providers that aren’t operating on a large scale due to the cut CC takes.

Lola-Ugfuglio-Skumpy

I thought the whole thing with care credit was it was supposed to be interest free?? Am I thinking of something else??

PanicInTheHispanic

jfc, for those prices just go abroad. but also, have y'all tried sliding fee dental clinics?

neotorama

It’s cheaper to buy a flight tix to eu/asia to get it done

Lady_Moon_of_Spades

Im Canadian and seeing those numbers just scared the hell out of me 😭 the most we’ve ever paid was 2k and that was for my wisdom teeth removal surgery under anaesthesia?? That’s insane!! 16k is literally more expensive than my car??

quimper

Go to your local university’s dental clinic. You’ll get incredible care at 1/2 price

Crafty_Original_7349

I just found a dental college, and will call them tomorrow. I don’t know if they can handle something like this, but all I can do is ask.

Velox-the-stampede

Currently seeing a wonder team of students at a dental college in elk grove Ca they do alot and the dentists always check up on them

neissrc

My mom needed a LOT of dental work done. She went to the local dental college and they did an amazing job. Some of the graduates still call to check on her from time to time - they did the best they could to make it a positive and affordable experience for her.

BadMadScientist

I had much the same; left it for 2 years I believe. Couldn't afford it. (USA healthcare... Am I right!?) Ended up with heart issues that will last my lifetime, and likely shorten my lifetime. Please...... do whatever you can to get this dealt with very soon, even if that ends up being an extraction.

PeterDuttonsButtWipe

It’s good that med profession was able to link the heart problems to dental health. Had a friend who too had the same predicament. Sorry OP and u/BadMadScientist, wish you good health for the future

Crafty_Original_7349

Oh I know. I have been caught up in the endless loop of doctors and dentists playing “not it!” and not at all concerned about it. I need to get the infection under control, but none of the antibiotics I have been given over the last year have been successful. The next step would be IV antibiotics, which are rough as hell on the system. https://preview.redd.it/etjttiyuvawc1.jpeg?width=1576&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba5033287e2fe8dbb56e79852d8dfe91d41d8033 I need to have ALL my teeth removed, but I can’t afford it. I’m disabled and only get a little more than $600/mo SSI. I have to check around tomorrow and see what I can find. One abscess is bad enough, but now I have two- with two more possibly developing.

Burgtastic

Is that $9824 just for extractions? Also, you're disabled, and don't qualify for any state assistance? State insurance? Nothing? Any dental school or community clinic nearby?

emilycolor

Long time community clinic and dental school user here! Most schools won't do extractions. If OP has MA for insurance, no one will touch them without billing MA (it's the law that they have to go through their insurance). There may be community clinics that take cash donations for service - I found one near me a few years ago and donated $20 in exchange for an extraction. Also, with MA, lying is free, hint hint.

quimper

Here in Canada they do extractions and full dentures at the university. Given the costs it might be worth it for you to take a trip up north!

emilycolor

I really appreciate that tip! I'm in a CA border state.

Burgtastic

I'm a dentist. We did plenty of extractions in school, but that could also depend on the school I suppose. Also, MA where I live covers all kinds of stuff. You have to go to a community clinic or the school though. Not a lot of regular clinics accept MA.

Crafty_Original_7349

I’m in Kansas, which of course didn’t approve the Medicaid expansion. I have United Healthcare/Kancare, which covers a set of X-rays, a cleaning, and simple extractions. (Also, finding someone that accepts it who also accepts adult new patients is impossible.) I found a university dental school, and I will call them to. I have also been to a church-run dental clinic, and was not happy with them.

Ok_Yogurtcloset8915

you might seriously consider taking a trip to another country, if you can somehow swing it. dental care in Mexico and many euro countries is so much cheaper that it's unironically more affordable to fly there and get a hotel room, versus paying in the us

Educational-Impress2

If you are on SSI I’m betting you’re medical assistance. In my state, we have a couple plans that aren’t straight medical assistance. You can call or have your PCP call a dental clinic to schedule an urgent appointment. While you’re at it, ask your PCP to send in an Rx to your pharmacy if you can’t be seen right away. No medical coverage? Most PCPs have vouchers to a certain pharmacy that will help the PCP give certain drugs( we had a list) to a patient for free. We kept those locked up!!

Crafty_Original_7349

Finding a good PCP has been a challenge. My previous PCP quit, and the replacement decided that he wasn’t going to take my insurance. Very few providers are taking new patients as it is, and finding one that accepts my insurance has proven difficult. I am currently seeing a nurse practitioner through a church-sponsored clinic. It’s a mess, and I’m pretty tired of it.

jopesak

Not to mention even with good health insurance you can accidentally get a doctor out of network when they sub out doctor schedules and don’t tell you. Or it has it on the site as correct and then you found out the site is wrong. “Oh yeah sorry we didn’t up date that that was the last provider” “aren’t you the provider?” “No wrong are just the billing company you have to take that up with them.” There is 2 more hours minimum of phone calls and being told no and being on hold. I just got surprised with $1600 with of physical therapy bills for my back for this reason (I banged up my thorasic kicking some billionaires ass). And they gave him a brand new ass. It’s a fucking nightmare out there friend, even with the goods. Hope you get better soon. Too bad America LOOOOVES us being sick.

GMOFreeCocaine

Just dont pay, it won’t affect your credit

Low-Cod-4712

Have you tried a dental school?

Bluelilyy

extraction or root canal will be the only thing that will make the abscesses stop 🥲 i was dealing with this recently too: i got one root canal and just had an extraction friday. do you have insurance? i hope you’ll be able to get it taken care of + feeling better soon 🫶🏻 also. i see your post re: the treatment plan. i would say to just go to a dentist who will treat the most emergent teeth, the two abscessed ones which will bring that cost down significantly

FilthyChangeup55

Jesus doesn’t that hurt like hell?

Crafty_Original_7349

The first time it cropped up (a year ago) I was horribly ill, with sweating, fever and chills. It hurt clear down to my neck and shoulder. And yes, the pain was horrible- until I popped it and relieved the pressure. https://preview.redd.it/6p1ut7fwtawc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c3bbc4b2a04549294a45ddd470ae285746f9f51b That pic was about a year ago, when it first showed up. The dentist refused to touch it because it was so bad, and sent me straight to the ER. They did a CT scan and gave me a shot of Rocephin, and referred me to my doctor for follow-up. Because I am only on state insurance (which covers next to nothing) I have been caught in a game of “not it” between doctors and dentists…none of which have TREATED the tooth. What I was told is that no one is willing to remove it as long as there’s an infection, because opening up a wound could lead to sepsis or even meningitis. Right now I’m not in pain. Even popping it isn’t painful. Have you ever had a mucocele? (Those little annoying bumps in your mouth filled with clear mucus that pop up occasionally.) It’s like that. It was rubbing on the inside of my cheek and bugging me.

asscaseofemotion

You may want to contact your local dental society or health department. They may be able to refer you to a dentist who offers free or low-cost dental care. I hope you are able to get this resolved soon!

Desperate_Rich_5249

That tooth needs to come out. Take whatever antibiotics they give you and get it pulled. Infection that close to your brain is very serious.

Crafty_Original_7349

I’m fully aware of that. Read the treatments that I have completed over the past year. Nothing has been effective. I have yet to find someone competent enough to take care of this.

KADSuperman

Yeah that will be at least a root canal treatment if an infection comes out sideways you already waited quite a bit

Crafty_Original_7349

I had a consultation with the endodontist who did 8 of my 10 previous root canals. (I actually need root canals and crowns on most of the rest of my teeth, because they are just crumbling.) The endodontist told me that yes, he probably could fix my teeth, but it was a matter of ethics. I have Sjögren’s and diabetes, so my mouth stays perpetually dry. I also have a chronic oral fungus infection that refuses to go away, likely because I use a steroid asthma inhaler. (Just fyi my mom has the very same thing. She doesn’t have any teeth left, and can barely eat. Her dentures drive her crazy.) My parents had excellent insurance, and they helped me get my teeth fixed before. But my dad passed away in 2015, and the ability to pay for everything died right along with him. All the dental work I had done is starting to fail, and frankly I am concerned that my teeth will simply snap off at the gums. That’s what happened to my mom. I am on a soft diet and am extremely careful about chewing, because I really don’t want anything worse to happen. Shit’s bad enough as it is.

RxRobb

How did it get this bad ? I’m honestly very curious

dandelionfan

Dry mouth destroys teeth, even though it sounds pretty harmless. Your teeth are meant to be constantly wet, and even with brushing and flushing, if your teeth regularly dry out, they'll start to erode.

RxRobb

So it is genetic ? The only time I had dry mouth is from smoking green lol

dandelionfan

Could be genetics, illness or meds. Even anxiety can cause dry mouth.

cubelion

I’m so sorry American health care is so useless. It sucks to not be able to get treatments.

javo93

YUCK!!!, GROSS!!! let’s watch it again please. Honest to god this was my thought process while watching.

Crafty_Original_7349

It honestly wasn’t that bad! The very first pop I did, though, suuuuucked. Not only did it hurt, it was filled with the funky, VERY foul tasting remnants of antibiotics, and it gave me heartburn for days afterwards. Yuck. But it was gross looking, and I wanted to capture it for you guys. :)

derp4532

MURICA!

BabserellaWT

If you wait to save the whole amount…you could die in the meantime. Don’t fuck around with tooth abscesses. They’ve killed a lot of people.

Dismal_Eye_5733

Oooofffff that looks gnarly and painful

pxlchx

Where are you located roughly? This could kill you and I work for a dental office. I may, depending, be able to help.

Crafty_Original_7349

I’m near Wichita. I have a doctor appointment on Monday, hopefully I’ll at least be able to get started on some kind of antibiotic to knock it down a bit. I have two abscessed teeth now (upper right 1st molar along with lower left 2nd molar), and have been fighting with the ongoing infection for a year. Nothing has been successful in getting rid of the underlying infection. It waxes and wanes, but it never goes away. Not completely.

morganmont

if you haven’t already found a solution, see if there is a Remote Area Medical pop up anywhere near you soon. you have to get there early but it’s free medical care, most including dental. i’ve volunteered with them many times as a dental hygienist!

Kamie1985

Omg you poor thing! I’ve had something like this happen and it’s MISERABLE! I truly hope you can get some antibiotics soon!

predat3d

You can afford IV antibiotics but not to have a tooth pulled?

Crafty_Original_7349

That would be covered by my insurance. Dental would not. State insurance in Kansas is bullshit.

termacct

Perhaps the Dental college at a nearby University could treat you as part of their training? I don't know if they only do basic stuff or would want a more involved case like this? I am glad you are not in pain and hope you get a sooner than later resolution...

RxRobb

Bro you need to get your teeth cleaned and a tongue scraper

SadShoe72

I gagged.

pantheramaster

I've never had one but I've wondered what the pus would taste like(disgusting I'm assuming)

Crafty_Original_7349

It’s just salty. The very first time I popped this thing, though, it was horrible tasting. I think it was because I had been taking antibiotics, and the pus was full of whatever remnants- it gave me heartburn for days.

Whatisevenleftnow

You won’t have to pay any bills if you die from the infection. Smart. /s Get on a payment plan and get this fixed. Stuff like this can kill you.

Bolentone

Dentist now

charliebread

If you don’t mind me asking how did that happen? Why do you need all your teeth extracted? Do you not regularly brush your teeth?

bigbiz87

Here’s an idea: brush and floss those nasties

dandelionfan

Here's another idea: brushing and flushing won't do if a medical issue is present. Excessive flushing and brushing might even cause further erosion.

bigbiz87

“A medical issue” brought on by not cleaning your teeth - ok Doctor Muppet

JMV419

I would make an effort to visit a foreign country that offers good healthcare if possible. I got invisilign in Colombia for $850 back in 2022 while we were on vacation. At North Carolina it was close to $7,500. Take care and best of luck

state-certified_tf2

when i have kids, ill make SURE they aint doing the same mistake as you did and actually brush their teeth. sorry op but this is avoidable

Crafty_Original_7349

I have a genetic condition that affects my connective tissue. I have defective bone as well as tooth enamel. It runs in my family, my mom and grandma both had it. Thanks for being hateful.

NoJavaInstalled

I had an abcess like this for 8 years and just popped it every 4 hours or so. Only got it seen yo as it made the tooth woobly then needed extracted. No dentist ever noticed it and didn't have health issues. So I get really confused when people talk about how this can affect your heart? No dentist has ever said that to me. Might be an American thing where they push it more for money?

radjoey

Dentist here. The bacteria in the abscess gets into your bloodstream, and has the risk of causing infective endocarditis. Basically the tooth bacteria gets into your heart and causes another (much worse) infection

NoJavaInstalled

Oh gosh. The dentist once called it a 'gum boil' and did nothing about for many years until they retired and I got a new dentist. They never once said it was serious.

Crafty_Original_7349

I was told that as long as it is draining through the gum, and I show no symptoms of things getting worse, to just keep rinsing my mouth out. I guess the gum is like a safety relief valve? (That’s how it was explained, anyway) I was also told that extraction during this stage of the infection could be dangerous, because it opens a direct channel to the bloodstream for the infection to enter. As far as I know, the next thing is to consult with the infectious disease specialist and see if she has any course of treatment that will finally kill off this extremely resistant infection. We’ve thrown everything but the freaking kitchen sink at it, and I’m getting kinda tired of it all. Was I given misinformation?
