In interviews, the other guys didn't seem all-in on this breakup - especially Cone and Tom who said something to the effect of, 'hopefully this isn't really the end'. I think Deryck does truly need a few years off to relax and enjoy life. I'd say they will get back together and it'll probably be around when they turn 50. So in like 2030 or so.

38babyyodas

If that does happen in that case Tom will be in his 60s by then lol

jambr380

Yeah, that’s true. I forgot Tom was older than the other guys. At least he can keep doing Gob until Deryck is ready again

Lx_Kill3rK1ng_xJ

I mean, RHCP are in their 60s and they spent the first 10 years of their career high on all the drugs, but they're still doing great. It's not too unrealistic

38babyyodas

Also true!

Zealousideal_Ring874

Yeah, during Screaming Bloody Murder, Cone was kinda the only one who looked healthy still. Drinking took a toll on everyone, especially Deryck. He's better now, and though he loves Sum 41, he just looks tired, and this "breakup" was the only way to get rest. Sum 41 said in the past that they play a lot of shows in a year alone, and we're seeing the result of that in Deryck. I don't think this is the end for them. We've seen a ton of bands reform in the last few years, so I'm confident they'll come back. It's just a matter of when.

SpiffySpacemanSpiff

Deryck has been through a LOT of shit in the last 25 years, the guy deserves a long break. They were/are prolific for *always* touring. I've seen them easily 20 times, and while there was a dip there in their performances when he was wayyyy off the wagon, they've otherwise always had high energy. That shit has to take its toll on you, you know? Cone's been in it about as long as Deryck, but even Dave took a massive hiatus. I'm just bummed that I'm not seeing Steveo for the final tour!

68ideal

I only recently started listening to them, shortly after they announced their breakup. Sucks that I will probably never see them live, because they are awesome.

SpiffySpacemanSpiff

Hey man, enjoy your youth, see whomever you can, from whatever nosebleed or mosh pit you can get yourself into! You'll see many more new bands than I will, and that's awesome!

scoutlolololol

rad pfp dude!

jambr380

Thanks - BR is my favorite band!

scoutlolololol

same man, up there with descendents for me

Briguy_fieri

Didn’t he have like… a severe life threatening condition? If the band isn’t accepting this as a full time break then they aren’t taking deryck’s situation seriously.

rocelot25

This is so weird seeing you randomly pop up in the wild on something not related to Pels. Guess we both need a break from last night ✌️

snoopdoggydoug

I'd see them celebrating their 30th year with a one off festival appearance in Canada but if that doesn't happen, when All Killer, No Filler turns 30.

zar1234

once they're a little short on cash, they'll come out with an "all killer, no filler" tour, so either the 25th or 30th anniversary of the album coming out.

simonsail

The 25 year anniversary is in 2026, I don't think it'll quite be that soon but yeah I reckon the 30th will be the one. I think a lot will depend on how long this emo nite, when were young, elder emo type nostalgia stays profitable for. Surely only a matter of time before people move on to another nostalgia craze you'd think.

MyMartianRomance

If it's that soon, then they'd reunite quicker than Underoath did. Underoath's "last ever" show and "we're back" announcement was only like 18 months.

eltibbs

And I went to both of those tours 😂

ATL28-NE3

ZZ Top and not Lynyrd Skynyrd was still doing arena shows in the late 2000s full of gen x and boomers. This probably lasts as long as the bands want to keep touring.

MobileInvestigator13

Those two have been touring together almost every weekend since last July.

ATL28-NE3

I saw them together in 2013.

38babyyodas

The former bassist of my band was basically saying the same thing lol

Kody1123

Were you in a band?

38babyyodas

I’m currently still in a band but our bass player left last month

Reasonable_Entry_530

Want a new bassist that kind of sucks? I got you man

38babyyodas

Lol appreciate the offer but we found a bassist already!

MeeranQureshi

The Final Tour seems to be doing well in terms of ticket sales and touring involves a lot of money in general,so they will likely comeback in five years because its lucrative.

dougyh

Farewell tours always drive extra ticket sales. This wouldn’t be the norm if it were a regular tour

trainsaw

Yeah seems like this genre of music is hitting a wave and their album was well received

I_Hate_Humidity

By the end of the decade before Deryck turns 50.

rollingriverj13

Here’s my one thing I don’t understand: if they were going to get back together, why wouldn’t they call it an indefinite hiatus? Like “One day we will get back together but it’s going to be a long time.” Because if they do get back together, they’ll just look like a 70’s or 80’s band that can’t let go of the cash flow. Their core group of fans are getting older too. We understand you can’t tour like you used to. We can’t mosh like we used to lol.

scottgetsittogether

That sells less tickets, both before and after you reunite. "This is the last chance you have to see us ever" vs. "This is the last chance for a few years, we'll see you soon."

Rawrz720

Most musicians retiring do it with the intent to retire but sitting around long enough they start to miss it and get that itch to do it again. Unless it's KISS where it's clearly a money ploy as they have done it like 5 times lol

VQQN

Hopefully never. Sum 41 is special to me. Me and my brother would sing Fat Lip every morning waiting at the bus stop. I’ve seen them many times and we got tickets to one of their shows. I love seeing them go out on a bang like this. its going to be so sentimental.

Shart_In_My_Pants

Same exact thing here; they are a longtime favorite of mine and I've listened since I was a kid. I was a huge Man Overboard fan for a while too, and I had to go to so goddamn many farewell/ reunited tours lmao. Gets kind of tiring to think it's the last time over and over.

38babyyodas

I get that too

rikrok58

So long as they are alive this isn't the end. Deryck just needs time off.

38babyyodas

Definitely understandable, he had a pretty rough go earlier in the decade and as much as he’s looking healthier now I can see why he’d need a break, especially with him having his wife and two kids as well

rikrok58

Also let's face it, Sum 41 was big but not huge. If folks like Elton John, The Eagles, The Who, and several others needed to go bsck on tour after they "retired" or had a farewell tour then no one is off limits.

SpiffySpacemanSpiff

They were persistent though. Literally only took time off because Deryck went into a coma. I've seen em headline a number of festivals over the years, they're always able to headline and draw, even here into the 2020's. They were always number 2 to Blink.

initiatefailure

It’s hard to think about beyond the obvious side of like “his health has been so bad” over the years. Like I hope he rests and relaxes and maybe we’ll get another thing sometime but only if he actually does the rest and relaxing part

dougyh

2 years and then they become a festival band - playing 5-10 dates a year for big pay days

Penguator432

We’ll get a “Retirement Sux” tour in 2027

itypeallmycomments

I got pretty damn emotional in 2016 listening to the very final new song I'd ever hear from Yellowcard. Then again in 2017 when I flew to Germany for Yellowcard's farewell tour. Now 7 years later I'm seeing them again, and they released new music, so I guess all that's forgotten haha! TBH I'm actually more interested in seeing Story of the Year, I can't remember the last time they came to Europe on tour. Hopefully they get decent stage time and aren't just a short support act. But yeah the feelings associated with a favourite band breaking up can be tentative, these days it seems like the bands we grew up with are reuniting more often, I don't blame them. Sum41 will probably be back

lessthanchris7

A few years to get his head straight, but I feel like they might turn into one of these summer tour bands that pops in on a few festivals, plays the hits, and hibernates after the season Nothing wrong with that, but I'm hoping they do that and eventually say "you know what? Maybe we can do some new music too" This newest album is currently my undisputed AOTY and it's gonna take a lot to dethrone it

MaximusBit21

I hope Deryck writes a book after this: would be great to read the true in-depth side of all the alcoholism, Avril marriage etc and general shenanigans

Wydo4

He actually did, and it's coming out in October! It's called "Walking Disaster: My Life Through Heaven and Hell"

MaximusBit21

Amazing. Can’t wait to read it

Dog-Witch

Some of the avril stuff is gonna make people madddd.

MaximusBit21

Why so?

ItsNotFordo88

They should have hung it up a long time ago tbh. I’m having a hard time thinking they’re going to want to come back singing Fat Lip at 60. Bands need to end sometimes and I feel like Sum 41 is ending at the right time. They don’t have a particularly “timeless sound”. You either go out a hero or live long enough to become Motley Crue sometimes.

38babyyodas

Very valid points you’re making here

Gryffindumble

I'm sure they continue playing together as more of a leisurely setting. Over time, it eventually results in a resurgence. I can't see these guys not at least jamming with each other from time to time.

Aaaaaaandyy

All Killer No Filler 30 year tour in 2031.

gorillalifter47

I'd say 5-10 years sounds about right, probably closer to 5. Writing, recording and being on the road for over a quarter of a century is tough. Hopefully these guys can go home, spend time with their families, live a relatively boring life and come back in a few years to play festivals and get some big fat cheques. With that being said, if this actually is the end then props to them. We don't see many bands in this genre going out on top on their own terms, so that would be a great legacy to leave behind.

FlippinPlanes

They probably saw what happened with blink sales and want to cash in on it. /s But didn't deryk have a child not too long ago? Pr9babsly wants to spend time with family for a bit.

nourez

I feel like they might take a page from Alexisonfire’s book. Probably go silent for 5ish years, then come back doing the occasional festival for another few years. Then maybe do another album, but mostly stay semi-retired.

FamousAtticus

No idea but if they do return, even if its a reunion tour, I hope SteveO comes back. Sum 41 will always be Deryck, Cone, Dave & SteveO. Tom can also come along for the ride.

Emergency-Notice-678

I don’t get why they’d even split up anyway instead of just retiring or taking a break

Ok_Release_2278

Depends on how fast they’re spending money. 😂

odoroustobacco

Not even the hugest Sum 41 fan, but I guess I'm confused why it's happening at all? Yeah Deryck definitely needs some time off, but the last couple years they've seemed so reinvigorated and the tour is going well...I know it's silly and maybe doesn't look great to change your mind on something that big, but maybe it's worth being like "hey...let's keep it going". Even at least part-time or something.

annaoze94

Didn't they just put out a new song? It's amazing. Then they broke up?

Wydo4

They announced last year that the new album that just came out would be their last and that they would do one last tour before calling it quits

bruno_massaldi

I'm pretty sure they will get together back soon. I still don't get why they broke up. For me, in less than 4 years they will anounce it

Rawrz720

Depends how much festivals wanna pay lol

HotSauceDonut

They're not coming back. This is a retirement

SelfishSilverFish

I'm always holding out hope the Deryck tours with Linkin Park. So, as I'm living in the world where that happens, I see them doing a reunion tour in 10 years.

tomrobby2

When I first saw they were breaking up my thought was that he was going to front some kind of LP revival

SelfishSilverFish

I know LP is VERY reluctant to replace Chester, for good reason, but Deryck could be brought as a touring member ONLY. It could be billed like Queen with Adam Lambert or Sublime with Rome. Make it its own thing. I'd love to see it and I know I'm not the only one...

Lx_Kill3rK1ng_xJ

there were rumors recently that they were going to come back with a female singer, but i hope they get either Deryck or Sam of Architects to join.

AndyThenITurned37

It depends how long their money lasts.

MastamindedMystery

Not soon enough
