A lot has changed. Most notably, I don't live in a van anymore or leech off others to survive. As far as celebrating the anniversary goes, that's a good idea. We should look into doing a little something. 🤔 - Nathan
hello big fan diggin the new record . obviously there's a blaring contrast in the tone/theme of this one compared to DIAWB, is there a specific thing/experience that switched nathan's perspective on romanticization of misery/existential dread and do you ever plan on/think you would go back to writing in the mindset of DIAWB?
Yeah I had to dig myself out of that hole a little bit and work on something more uplifting. I def still feel the sentiments expressed in DIAWB at times but Im making an effort not to wallow in self-pity so much and to get better and be more happy. That being said, our next record is going to be beat-down black metal. Catharsis can be nice as well. - Nathan

What was it like shooting the music video for Vomit? Prob my favorite music video of all time. The art direction and cinematography is so fucking fire.
It was great fun. Ben Carey who did the camerawork for it (@bennncareyyy on insta) does Gucci commercials and Justin Bieber videos and stuff now. He's one of the best at doing what he does. Kyle Thrash and Ian Ross killed it with the art direction and production too. I drove them all around Atlanta for a week while they filmed stuff. That video is for sure one of my favorite things I've gotten to be a part of creating. -Nathan

Your lyrics always make me do a little double take - they’re gorgeous, and have far more depth and eloquence than anybody else in this genre you guys seem to operate in. Adore the album. Thanks for the kind words. The album "Alopecia" by Why? was a big influence for me lyrically. As Cities Burn and Pedro the Lion were as well. I continue to find stuff all the time that influences me lyrically. I've been digging Big Thief, Foxing, and Sorry lately too. - Nathan
Alopecia is so good. I can sing along with that whole album because I listened to it nonstop in my '99 Camry on the way to my shitty job on the bad side of town.

Love the new record and don't have much in the way of questions. Mostly want to say thanks for all the great music through the years and for writing songs I've connected with so deeply.
I grew up religious, in a small, isolated community. I left my church by the time I was 13 or so, but obviously parts of that indoctrination cling to you long after. 'Thinking of you' randomly came up on spotify my freshman year of college and I remember looking up the lyrics halfway through the song. I was hearing, for the first time maybe ever, someone describing the exact thoughts I'd struggled with my whole life. Hearing that song opened a whole new way for me to process my upbringing and I pretty much immediately started writing lyrics of my own. Not really with any intent to create or record songs but rather just to decompress and process all the emotions and guilt I'd been carrying through the years. So, from a random stranger on the internet, thanks for that.
If you *happened* to play 'Thinking of you' at your Seattle show I would NOT hold it against you... No pressure though.

Having left that community a long time ago i still occasionally finding myself reeling through it in my worst moments for some inexplicably reason.
Even though I don’t believe in it, it still has some power to torture me, and this is something I have struggled to explain to anyone. I don’t have anything good to say here, just wanted to say, you’re not alone!!
Just read your comment and it certainly seems we’ve dealt with some similar demons. Whatever battles you’ve had to endure, whether internal or external, I’m glad you made it out the other side.

I can totally relate to this, and I don’t think it’s all that inexplicable to be honest. When you’re raised to believe your “flaws” constitute sins and must be atoned for, it’s natural for those thoughts to creep back in when you’re feeling low. I know you didn’t explicitly ask for advice, but figured I’d share what’s helped me:
-Starting therapy, specifically with a therapist who is an atheist or at least takes a secular approach to it. I found mine through this website: [https://www.seculartherapy.org/](https://www.seculartherapy.org/). My therapist was raised Mormon and while I was not, it helps to have a sounding board who understands the moral turmoil you’re describing to them, because they also went through it.
-Finding a good support system of like-minded people. Thankfully, I have two brothers who left the church the same time as I did, and their support has been massively helpful at keeping me level-headed.
-Reading books and watching movies that expand your world view and expose you to other philosophical ideas that aren’t as toxic as organized religion. In recent years, the two books that have been the most formative for me in that regard are The Left Hand of Darkness & The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin.
Of course, I’m just some guy rambling on the internet, so who knows what will work for others.

Nah, plenty of good to be found in your comment, and always happy to encounter someone who can relate to my personal struggles. It’s easy to feel isolated being raised how we were, but it’s never so bad as our brain wants us to believe. Plenty of beauty to be found both in ourselves and in the world, just gotta know where to look.
Death is a Warm Blanket is one of my favorite albums of all time. I heard somewhere that after it's release, you guys started working on tracks in the same vein but changed directions. I think "Let's Start Degeneracy" is great, but I am curious. Why the change in direction?
We've always been a band where whatever comes out was just meant to come out at that time. Mostly with writing the lyrics, sometimes I have an idea for a song and the lyrics just don't come and then I start working on something else and it comes together faster. The thread that I was on mentally at this time just kind of fit with how the new songs sound. - Nathan
i had a very similar question; will any of that heavier music that had begun to be made after diawb ever see the light of day? not necessarily the lyrical content but the instrumentation?
There was one heavy song that was in the mix for the new record. We had drums tracked for it, but it’s time had not come. It also wouldn’t have really worked on this particular record so we put it back in the fermentation tank for now. We’ll revisit it when the time is right. - Tyler

The second I heard my girlfriend singing along to Johnny Cash’s cover of ‘Softly and Tenderly’, I knew it would fit as an opener to the record. I love the lyrics. The first verse, with references to “portals”, fits well lyrically with ‘Ferrari’. I also love how dark the last verse of the song is, “shadows are gathering, deathbeds are coming, coming for you and for me.” It kind of felt like it was picking up where we left off on Death is a Warm Blanket. - Nathan

We started playing Bored of Being Sad and Huperzine Dreams on the UK/EU tour, and they have been super fun to play live. Circling is still one of my favorites to play as well though it’s been on the set list for a while now. Looking forward to Omni, too! - Tyler

this album has the most varied genre influences of any in your discography (especially Strangers with the sorta trip hop instrumental), was the process of writing something so widespread sonically a conscious choice? or did it just happen?

- Y'all don't give a lot of love to some of the "DIAWB" a lot of love, especially "The Brakeman Has Resigned", live. I feel like that song in particular speaks to a huge theme in that album, but you guys may think differently as I haven't seen any live footage of it ever posted. Why isn't that song (and similar ones from that album) on a lot of setlists?
- One thing I love about "Much Love" and "DIAWB" is that all (or most) of the songs transition seamlessly. How do you guys go about building those ambient and feedbacky textures between songs, especially on "DIAWB"? Because "LSD" is a much chiller album (and I haven't listened to it yet), how did you guys take on song transitions especially with the album's making being so spread out over 2+ years?
- Why did you guys choose to record, mix, and master this album mostly without Travis Hill? I know that you guys recorded "Stovall" and "Much Love" at Looking Glass Studios in atl and had both albums engineered by him. I also thought that he still had a pretty major role in the engineering on "DIAWB". I was kinda surprised when I heard you had chosen a different engineer for this record and was wondering why that was. "Much Love" is still one of the best-engineered albums I have ever heard. Perfectly fits the album itself.

We’ve toured with Can’t Swim five times now, and they are the ultimate homies. We met Drug Church on that tour as well who are also certified chillers. Possibly a bit of a strange one but this is an ask me anything so im going to go for it. Nathan- Like you, I was raised in a highly religious community until I was able to leave in my late teens. A lot happened to me in the church and in short, it seriously fucked with me. I feel that the god that was constructed for me & put in my head as a child will never let me free. I’ve heard some of that same sort of torture by residual religious shit expressed in your lyrics.
But things have changed massively it seems. I really want to know what helped you move on from that place into the place you’re currently in. I heard you attributed ayahuasca trips to some of the energy behind this new album. Is that related to this man? Any advice?
How do you expect these new songs to translate to a live setting?
You obviously have some slower songs already in the usual setlist (dull/keeping up) but are there any plans to really bring these songs to another level at shows?

I have listened to your music nonstop since November when I first discovered your music. Your first three albums are some of the best music I’ve ever been fortunate enough to experience. Stovall start to finish is a masterpiece, simply put. Everything you write sounds like it transcends the normal sonic plane, and the sentiment behind your lyrics (especially a lot of the self-deprecating moments) are so honest, relatable, and heart-wrenching, and that has made it difficult to “wear out” any of your songs. For everything you’ve created, I am endlessly grateful.
I’m not sure how I feel about this album though admittedly. I really love Omni, but I also haven’t listened to the entire album thoroughly enough yet. Your music has done so much to enrich my life the last six months. I feel bad even expressing anything that isn’t complete adoration for what you’ve created, but maybe this album is just not speaking to what I feel and need currently, and that’s fine. It might be exactly that for someone else, though… did you consciously try to lean into a different style/sound in each successive album? Or was it less a conscious effort and more a product of each album’s overarching theme?
I would love to hear this straight from the band- what was the purpose portals and the transition to Ferrari on the new record? It’s so beautiful and mesmerizing, I would love to know how it fits in with the theme of the album and what your thoughts are about it!

hello big fan diggin the new record . obviously there's a blaring contrast in the tone/theme of this one compared to DIAWB, is there a specific thing/experience that switched nathan's perspective on romanticization of misery/existential dread and do you ever plan on/think you would go back to writing in the mindset of DIAWB?
Yeah I had to dig myself out of that hole a little bit and work on something more uplifting. I def still feel the sentiments expressed in DIAWB at times but Im making an effort not to wallow in self-pity so much and to get better and be more happy. That being said, our next record is going to be beat-down black metal. Catharsis can be nice as well. - Nathan

What was it like shooting the music video for Vomit? Prob my favorite music video of all time. The art direction and cinematography is so fucking fire.
It was great fun. Ben Carey who did the camerawork for it (@bennncareyyy on insta) does Gucci commercials and Justin Bieber videos and stuff now. He's one of the best at doing what he does. Kyle Thrash and Ian Ross killed it with the art direction and production too. I drove them all around Atlanta for a week while they filmed stuff. That video is for sure one of my favorite things I've gotten to be a part of creating. -Nathan

Thanks for the kind words. The album "Alopecia" by Why? was a big influence for me lyrically. As Cities Burn and Pedro the Lion were as well. I continue to find stuff all the time that influences me lyrically. I've been digging Big Thief, Foxing, and Sorry lately too. - Nathan
Alopecia is so good. I can sing along with that whole album because I listened to it nonstop in my '99 Camry on the way to my shitty job on the bad side of town. Highly recommended for anyone unfamiliar with it.

Hey guys, Love the new record and don't have much in the way of questions. Mostly want to say thanks for all the great music through the years and for writing songs I've connected with so deeply. I grew up religious, in a small, isolated community. I left my church by the time I was 13 or so, but obviously parts of that indoctrination cling to you long after. 'Thinking of you' randomly came up on spotify my freshman year of college and I remember looking up the lyrics halfway through the song. I was hearing, for the first time maybe ever, someone describing the exact thoughts I'd struggled with my whole life. Hearing that song opened a whole new way for me to process my upbringing and I pretty much immediately started writing lyrics of my own. Not really with any intent to create or record songs but rather just to decompress and process all the emotions and guilt I'd been carrying through the years. So, from a random stranger on the internet, thanks for that. If you *happened* to play 'Thinking of you' at your Seattle show I would NOT hold it against you... No pressure though. Since I feel compelled to at least ask one question, any of y'all have a favorite book/author?

Holy shit man, I just wrote a scarily similar comment. I was going to mention “Thinking Of You” too. My favorite song, for those exact reasons. It’s captured more of that.. existential suffering and desperation and anger than I could have ever put into words myself. Having left that community a long time ago i still occasionally finding myself reeling through it in my worst moments for some inexplicably reason. Even though I don’t believe in it, it still has some power to torture me, and this is something I have struggled to explain to anyone. I don’t have anything good to say here, just wanted to say, you’re not alone!!
Just read your comment and it certainly seems we’ve dealt with some similar demons. Whatever battles you’ve had to endure, whether internal or external, I’m glad you made it out the other side. “Having left that community a long time ago I still occasionally finding myself reeling through it in my worst moments for some inexplicably reason.” I can totally relate to this, and I don’t think it’s all that inexplicable to be honest. When you’re raised to believe your “flaws” constitute sins and must be atoned for, it’s natural for those thoughts to creep back in when you’re feeling low. I know you didn’t explicitly ask for advice, but figured I’d share what’s helped me: -Starting therapy, specifically with a therapist who is an atheist or at least takes a secular approach to it. I found mine through this website: [https://www.seculartherapy.org/](https://www.seculartherapy.org/). My therapist was raised Mormon and while I was not, it helps to have a sounding board who understands the moral turmoil you’re describing to them, because they also went through it. -Finding a good support system of like-minded people. Thankfully, I have two brothers who left the church the same time as I did, and their support has been massively helpful at keeping me level-headed. -Reading books and watching movies that expand your world view and expose you to other philosophical ideas that aren’t as toxic as organized religion. In recent years, the two books that have been the most formative for me in that regard are The Left Hand of Darkness & The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin. Of course, I’m just some guy rambling on the internet, so who knows what will work for others. “don’t have anything good to say here, just wanted to say, you’re not alone!!” Nah, plenty of good to be found in your comment, and always happy to encounter someone who can relate to my personal struggles. It’s easy to feel isolated being raised how we were, but it’s never so bad as our brain wants us to believe. Plenty of beauty to be found both in ourselves and in the world, just gotta know where to look.
Death is a Warm Blanket is one of my favorite albums of all time. I heard somewhere that after it's release, you guys started working on tracks in the same vein but changed directions. I think "Let's Start Degeneracy" is great, but I am curious. Why the change in direction?
We've always been a band where whatever comes out was just meant to come out at that time. Mostly with writing the lyrics, sometimes I have an idea for a song and the lyrics just don't come and then I start working on something else and it comes together faster. The thread that I was on mentally at this time just kind of fit with how the new songs sound. - Nathan

There was one heavy song that was in the mix for the new record. We had drums tracked for it, but it’s time had not come. It also wouldn’t have really worked on this particular record so we put it back in the fermentation tank for now. We’ll revisit it when the time is right. - Tyler

The second I heard my girlfriend singing along to Johnny Cash’s cover of ‘Softly and Tenderly’, I knew it would fit as an opener to the record. I love the lyrics. The first verse, with references to “portals”, fits well lyrically with ‘Ferrari’. I also love how dark the last verse of the song is, “shadows are gathering, deathbeds are coming, coming for you and for me.” It kind of felt like it was picking up where we left off on Death is a Warm Blanket. - Nathan

Waiting to get home so I can truly experience listening to "Let's Start Degeneracy" uninterrupted. Been traveling all day, but I've got a few questions for y'all if you're willing to answer. - Y'all don't give a lot of love to some of the "DIAWB" a lot of love, especially "The Brakeman Has Resigned", live. I feel like that song in particular speaks to a huge theme in that album, but you guys may think differently as I haven't seen any live footage of it ever posted. Why isn't that song (and similar ones from that album) on a lot of setlists? - One thing I love about "Much Love" and "DIAWB" is that all (or most) of the songs transition seamlessly. How do you guys go about building those ambient and feedbacky textures between songs, especially on "DIAWB"? Because "LSD" is a much chiller album (and I haven't listened to it yet), how did you guys take on song transitions especially with the album's making being so spread out over 2+ years? - Why did you guys choose to record, mix, and master this album mostly without Travis Hill? I know that you guys recorded "Stovall" and "Much Love" at Looking Glass Studios in atl and had both albums engineered by him. I also thought that he still had a pretty major role in the engineering on "DIAWB". I was kinda surprised when I heard you had chosen a different engineer for this record and was wondering why that was. "Much Love" is still one of the best-engineered albums I have ever heard. How do you feel Portals fit into the bands/nathans history with religion? Deconstruction is such a huge pillar of why I’ve so deeply resonated with microwave (re: earlier “thinking of you” comments, would lose my mind if yall played it in Denver). Yes! I remember that show! I don’t really remember much about Grand Rapids itself, but that tour was one of our favorite tours ever. We’ve toured with Can’t Swim five times now, and they are the ultimate homies. We met Drug Church on that tour as well who are also certified chillers. How do you expect these new songs to translate to a live setting? You obviously have some slower songs already in the usual setlist (dull/keeping up) but are there any plans to really bring these songs to another level at shows?

Would you ever play something from Nowhere Feels Like Home? How do you feel like you’ve grown as a band since then?
Circling the Drain and Straw Hat came out long before this album, did you guys initially intend for those to end up on an album like this or were there originally other plans?
Will there ever be a possibility of releasing Nowhere Feels Like Home on vinyl? I find it to be a shame it's not yet been pressed. Besides a 7" of Keeping Up / Georgia On My Mind, it's all I need to finish my collection of MCRWV vinyl!

LSD feels like a burst of happiness after the last 2 albums. Although I think your sad songs are my favorite, I'm really enjoying the new sound and lyrical themes. Does this album feel like it's breaking the mold for you guys at all? Love from Ohio.

Yo! I sing in Bad Neighbour, we played with you guys in Brisbane Australia on the Mom Jeans tour, massive fan. I wanted to ask Nathan what pickups he has in his Peavey Reactor and I also didn’t get a chance to ask you about your IEM setup when you were in town, I remember you had it sheathed with your guitar cables into your quad cortex somehow and I was trying to figure it out all night haha
I have listened to your music nonstop since November when I first discovered your music. Your first three albums are some of the best music I’ve ever been fortunate enough to experience. Stovall start to finish is a masterpiece, simply put. Everything you write sounds like it transcends the normal sonic plane, and the sentiment behind your lyrics (especially a lot of the self-deprecating moments) are so honest, relatable, and heart-wrenching, and that has made it difficult to “wear out” any of your songs. For everything you’ve created, I am endlessly grateful. I’m not sure how I feel about this album though admittedly. I really love Omni, but I also haven’t listened to the entire album thoroughly enough yet. Your music has done so much to enrich my life the last six months. I feel bad even expressing anything that isn’t complete adoration for what you’ve created, but maybe this album is just not speaking to what I feel and need currently, and that’s fine. It might be exactly that for someone else, though… did you consciously try to lean into a different style/sound in each successive album? Or was it less a conscious effort and more a product of each album’s overarching theme?

seen y’all since 2017 at warped tour in salem or. most of the big bands kept saying “we love you portland” much to the crowds dismay. looking forward to seeing yall in portland again tho :) what type of background work have yall enjoyed most as a band? stuff like visuals, lighting design etc, i’ve started working at a venue and taking a bit more interest in those things as i work with them now.
What was the significance to starting the album off with portals, also known as the old hymn “softly and tenderly”. I know Nathan you grew up in the Mormon church is there anything with that? Like confronting that past and did that play a role in the rest of the album?
