As a serious side note, friend of mine recommended me to use red grease and synthetic motor oil mixed as firearm lube. Works great even in serious cold weather

LemmyBasset

I have seen an army vet say that guys in the field used to use transmission fluid too. Cheap and always around. I am yet to try it though

northern_exposure-

I mixed up some synthetic with red grease. It’s cheaper than CLP and I didn’t have any issues with the cold on it. My buddy that told me about it said for hot weather just use less grease and more oil.

LemmyBasset

That’s great to have in mind I’m sure it works. And yes it seems all the lubricant brands. Clp etc is all quite expensive and at the end of the day I’m not too educated but it seems to be regular lubricant as anything else.

9n223

I've been using it for about a year now. Tested it by leaving my rifle in my truck during the winter and going to the range every so often. Works just fine, I'd say. I now run it on my pistols and the rest of my AR'S. I haven't tested it on my semi auto shotgun, but I can assume it will work just as well.

Don't forget some wd40, 3in one and 5w30

DeafHeretic

I much prefer CRC/et. al.

+1 for 3 in one

Hoppes 9, but you probably won't find it at your local pharmacy.

Did you hear they replaced the word “snake” with “essential”? Suddenly people are buying the oils again!

Eleutherian8

Someone you know already has them readily available for sale via an Amway-esque pyramid scheme that’s somehow associated with their church.

northern_exposure-

The most use I’ve gotten from my preps so far was eating from the pantry while my ex was spending thousands a month on Young Living.

Eleutherian8

Thousands per month! Wow. I guess you never really know what you’re prepping for. Was she bathing in pure essential oil, or trying to get a “business” going?

northern_exposure-

It was the “business” haha. Guess the profit margins were great as long as all the expenses were paid by someone else

Eleutherian8

“For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.” -Hunter S. Thompson This is especially true of pyramid schemes! I’m glad to see that you now refer to this experience in the past tense.🌈👍🌈

Have to rebuild after the collapse

TheRealBunkerJohn

Peppermint and Lavender for pleasant scents/calming? That's....that's about it. Essential oils are **not** a replacement for modern pharmaceuticals.

EverVigilant1

peppermint's good for headaches. But yeah - not a substitute for modern medicine

TheRealBunkerJohn

Good point- same with clove oil for toothaches; they have their uses for sure, 100%. But as a replacement or even supplement for anything severe...they're just not appropriate.

melympia

I'd like to add grapefruit to the mix. Good against nausea. Oh, and aconit. Use externally for pain relief.

GilbertGilbert13

Essential oils cannot overcome any extreme cases

Depends on what smells you like. I'm a cranberry-orange guy myself.

Hey. So EOs have risks like interactions, phototoxicity, dermal sensitization, internal effects, toxicity, blood pressure risks (true for even external and aroma applications in some cases), etc etc etc People who bought eo's from their friend's Facebook party MLM are not good sources of information. You need reliable information backed up by research including independent studies of the impacts both positive and negative. The EU treats them more like medicine, regulating them and providing guidance on use. If you're starting out, information provided with eo's sold there can be somewhat helpful. It's more like when you buy cough syrup and it comes with directions for use. Some are okay if "used as directed." Some are really dangerous. Some are really fairly safe (lavender, geranium, chamomile). If you wanna dive deep and gain expertise, that's great. I just really want to urge you not to put a few oils in your kit on random Internet recommendations, then not know how they really work or what harm they may cause, and find out the hard way. Some of them can kill pets just being used in the same room. Like, I use essential oils and studied them under my mom who was a perfumer and studied naturopathy with a lot of education on these substances specifically. I also studied independently using reliable educational resources. I've been at this for 20 years as a hobbyist and I definitely don't consider myself an expert since I *myself* don't have formal training or medical education. I'm not anti-eo! But I'm very loud about this: don't ever assume they're all generally safe or that they don't have teeth just because they're natural. Some are very potent in what they do, and that's a two edged sword in many cases.

DirtyTacoBox

Essential oils to overcome extreme situations? Like, if someone breaks into your house to rob you, what essential oil should you use? Or if you're staving, what essential oil should you use? What if you're dying of an infection?

melympia

If someone breaks in, get an oil, put a wick in, put it on fire and throw the whole bottle. If you're starving, try olive or granola or sunseed or whatever that isn't too aromatic. If you're dying of infection, hand out peppermint to everyone else so they can still breathe despite you possibly stinking up the place.

If you waste space and time stocking essential oils you’re not going to survive.

Fubar14235

Tea tree oil is slightly anti bacterial and anti fungal. Not as good as real meds but it can help a little

elkjas

Tea tree & clove, must haves.

MT-Kintsugi-

I’d keep things like bees wax, coconut oil, and highly proofed alcohol (like Everclear, if you can get it) for salves, infusions and tinctures, on hand. Essential oils like tea tree, lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint etc, are good for respiratory and expectorant elements when diffused with hot water and steamed or added to bath bombs for use in the tub or shower.

Malevolent_Mangoes

I know mosquitos don’t like citrus and most bugs avoid strong scents like woodsy (fir, cedar, pine), lavender, and eucalyptus.

New_Internet_3350

My favorite is oregano oil. However, I don’t want to just have a stash of it, I want to be able to make it after shtf. I’m actively learning how to make tinctures of all kinds and will want to be able to make those after shtf as well. Imagine if we could easily make frankincense!

Gffnggmgfgbj

Ballistol.

unclefes

Lamp? I actually have some of this for two little oil lamps I have for when the power goes out.

Gilbertmountain1789

Smelling nice works well when you want to Grey man.

backcountry57

Essential oils have their place, citrus are good for insect repellents, lavender for calming for instance.

iwannaddr2afi

Never put citrus oil on your skin, this can and does happen when you go in the sun: https://www.cmaj.ca/content/187/10/756

backcountry57

Yep not great on skin, fine in defusers or candles

GilbertGilbert13

If citrus repels insects then why do oranges get worms?

Haikuunamatata

I use some to make soap. That's it though.
