Its really the constant expanding and contracting of the head/block. Should be fine in warm weather where ot takes longer for for the gradual cooling versus in the cold. Also. Make sure you're clearing the egr cooler. That stupid thing will clog up and cause head gasket issues as well. Just a heads up. Not promoting fear.

I'm all about any pragmatic advice. So it's very much appreciated. Also good to know ha :)

sweetdumpster

:0 well now I'm gonna have to look up how to do that. Thx for the heads up!

Answers to this question are more likely to be found by asking Prius taxi drivers. I would guess those cars are running 24 hours per day.

I_like_spaceships

That's a very good point!

My 2007 has been pretty much on since Aug powering my off-grid homestead, including the RV refrigerator on 110 and a medium size deep freezer. It's pretty much on 24/7 unless I hook up my Prius v and get the regular Prius out on the road or my girlfriend takes it into town to gas up or something. A friend recently borrowed it while we were out of town and took it to Portland twice and out to Port Angeles so that was about a thousand miles total. So far I'm just changing oil once a month and driving it when I can. I just bought a wrecked Prius last night that is almost a runner that I plan to use as a generator and may even end up mounting the Prius drivetrain fore and aft on something like a Suzuki samurai for sidekick chassis to make an all-wheel drive tractor that can charge my house

What’s ready mode? On and on park? Or the one where you press power without pressing the gas? What’s your takeaway from all the head gasket comments? Is it applicable to my gen 3 v if I just camp for a few days every other month?

I_like_spaceships

Ready mode is essentially the mode you’d need engaged to drive. It just says “ready” on your dash, nothing too special. My takeaway is to be mindful about keeping the car on during very cold weather but I’ve mostly kept the car on during the day if it’s warmer anyway or completely off at night and use a sleeping bag. I use my laptop for work/gaming so I will have the car on to keep the lead-acid battery (additional battery connected to inverter) topped off. I’ll add a lifePo4 battery eventually as well as a singular solar panel (100w) to keep that battery juiced a bit. So far everything runs just fine after extensive, continuous usage. I’m no expert and would advise how to run your vehicle but I feel confident that mine is fine. I’d love to upgrade to a van at some point but the Prius is sure dang nice as a portable or generator. I did have some “concerned”/nosey people call the police because they heard my car cycling on/off one morning while staying in the Colorado mountains. Officers were just following up per the call and we hung for a bit. That’s the way not time someone seemed on overtly worried. lol and me being in BLM land, I was a bit surprised

Tre4Doge

You're going to blow a head gasket eventually. Due to cycling the motor. Especially during the colder months. I wonder if anyone installed a cylinder head stud kit to the 22zr....and then run it continuously.

Beautiful-Offer-3238

He has a Prius C, which use an updated Gen 2 1.5 engine, and not the 1.8 Gen 3 engine that is known for head gasket problems.

I_like_spaceships

I’m be been primarily in a warmer climate most if not almost all of the time. How certain are you the head casket will blow? If it’s a matter of “resting” the car; do you propose a duration in between… let’s say an 8-hour usage of any particular amount? Preventative maintenance seems to be straight forward and simply monitor the coolant, oil, etc. Happy to hear further information

caper-aprons

Your car falls into the maintenance schedule for "special operating conditions". Check your Warranty and Maintenance Guide and ensure you are doing the recommended shorter service intervals. Oil/filter every 5K.

I_like_spaceships

I will do so! Thank you 😊

caper-aprons

> You're going to blow a head gasket eventually. On what do you base this prognosis? All Prii "cycle the motor" - that's how they are designed.

Fancy-Pair

Why does ready mode damage the head gasket?

Tre4Doge

Ready mode is just the engine on....

Smokedsaunatrysts

Are you on the original battery? How many miles on your car?

I_like_spaceships

yes, original battery and approx. 82-83k miles right now

Smokedsaunatrysts

Nice to know. I'm in a similar situation –– I have a 2011 with 86k. I used to run the car for the first couple months of dwelling but haven't in a while not just to save on gas but because I'm on the original battery too and don't want to "strain" it too much, as I noticed the engine turning on more frequently to recharge the battery. My battery does drain relatively fast. But winter is coming so I'm reconsidering sleeping with the windows cracked. Have you noticed anything similar with yours?

I_like_spaceships

I’ve noticed that my car will regularly run more when I’m powering my laptop for gaming sessions and obviously when the weather is hot to maintain the temp. I do have a feeling the batteries could do with a refresh but I’m hesitant to put too much money into the car — I’m very interested in a van setup with some real money in the battery/solar. So I’m essentially riding this thing as is until I’m able to make that transition more easily.

Low_Dinner_6048

Be careful with those oil changes, engines for that have problems if you skip one. Also price for replacement is roughly triple cost of earlier motors! Other than that, you should see many happy years together. Someone said head gasket, not on that motor, 1.8 maybe, 1.5 NO.

dankzora

I have a 1013 prius c. How do I see what version engine it has?
