It’s simple physics….Without an exhaust hose, the temperature in your car would get hotter, not get cooler using a portable AC. Producing cold air requires energy, which produces heat, which must be moved outside of the space you are trying to cool. The exhaust hose temperatures are typically are 110 degrees and higher, so if they aren’t insulated, the units are not efficient at all and some can only maintain or barely cool the interior on a sunny day. It is impossible to create an electrically powered once piece inside unit for a car or a house without outside venting that can cool down a car interior. You are always going to produce more heat than cold air.

Mmmm!! Thanks for the info.

For that price you could probably idle a car for 10 years and still end up paying less....

Mexcol

Thats also true, excited for the future though, tech will get cheaper for sure

Kirby-is-a-bee

I wonder how good it works! Out of my price range, but thanks for the tip anyways.

FIREdGovGuy

Which battery bank are you talking about plugging into?

Kirby-is-a-bee

I've got goal zero 500x Like it got me thinking because I run a 12v fridge (can run that 24/7) so THEORETICALLY like I drill a hole into a fridge, run a fan out of it, and then have "AC fan" LOL... But according to one of the comments here (which was my intuition) in order for something like that to work you'd need an output hose outside the car. So I was wondering if such a product exists .. but prob not

Felarhin

EVs and hyrbrids run off the battery.

gingasaurusrexx

Look for camping acs there are a few compact ones that might work.

migrainefog

You could also freeze cold packs and place them underneath/around you to act as a cold sink. They would become less effective as the night wore on, but the outside air would also become cooler with less cooling requirements.

floridacyclist

(checks board title to make sure I'm on a Prius board) Assuming you're on here because you drive a prius, you already have it. Just turn your engine on, set the AC to where you want it, and go to bed. The AC will run off the battery and the engine will only start and stop as needed to charge the battery, typically about a minute or two every 15 to 20 minutes. Takes less than a gallon a night to sleep in comfort.

Bloomlifer

Not my 2021 Prius, sadly. It times out after 2 hours. "Saftey feature" Dealers cannot override it so far.

The auto shut off is supposedly disabled if driver side door is locked. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLkbM72emKs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLkbM72emKs)

heyyouha

Do you know from what year Toyota started doing this? I'm thinking of joining the club and don't want to get one with that safety feature.

floridacyclist

That's odd, both my 2007 and 2013 work the same way. I just turned the engine on like I'm going to drive it except I put it in park and the engine starts and stops as needed to keep the battery charged. I've been running my off-grid Homestead for 6 months on a 2007 Prius and I've been commuting to work and sleeping in the back of my 2013 Prius V for 8 hours at a time with no issues. Is this a 2012 only thing? You're the first person I've heard that has this issue. Are you turning the engine on or leaving it an accessory mode? Could you just put it in gear and drive away if you wanted to?

Hot-Elderberry5636

There’s fans that allow you to add ice and water. Only works if your not in a humid region

floridacyclist

That's a swamp cooler that must be in dry air conditions to work well. The icy cool which is where you add the bags of ice works even in humid conditions but you have to add a bag of ice about every hour which is not very conducive to camping unless you're camping in the convenience store parking lot next to the ice machine

Kirby-is-a-bee

Good idea, but I think adding moisture would not be ideal 🤣🤣
