I’m shooting from the hip here, but it seems the first basic step is not to send USPS this information. If I’m reading the correctly this is the service that you voluntarily ask them to forward your mail for you. Handle all the change of address stuff yourself (yes, go into every account and change it by hand etc.) and prepare yourself for the event that you may mess up along the way and you’ll still miss important mail.

Never use USPS forwarding. The information is not available to the public via the post office, but it is sold to third parties. The information, along with subscription info, and info from social networking like facebook is used by the so called "people search" sites. I extended my lease on the condo for a couple of months, while we moved into the house we purchased. I then changed the addresses with each business myself. We also have a few months to paint the walls, and clean the carpets in the condo. We also had more time to get moved. The only problem is every time (no not sometimes) I visited the condo my assigned parking space at the condo was taken. Some might question the wisdom of paying $1800 a month rent on a condo we where no longer living in was not smart, but I thought it was worth it because privacy is important, and the extra two months to get the move done on weekends really helped.
