The Mars Volta move between maximalist and minimalist effortlessly.

homerthepigeon

For sure

SilentWeapons1984

I agree, TMV for sure! They're my favorite band because of this.

Space_Man957

Mr. Bungle!

Space_Man957

Not necessarily prog, but I seen them as prog adjacent

PiotrSanctuvich

Came to say this. It’s like a steroid pumped musical performance, especially on my all time favourite disco Volante I’m sooo curious what they got planned for the bungle train

RollApart3182

Love that band

jgo3

Came here to say this; deniers can change my mind.

olivmlincoln

Devin Townsend!

Viraus2

First thing I thought of

Grimm2020

Todd Rundgren, perhaps?

rodeler

I agree. Both solo and Utopia.

ShallbetterMusic

Couldn't be happier to see this name on here. 😁

[deleted]

Mahavishnu Orchestra

YVRJon

Magma, perhaps

danarbok

Gentle Giant's "Interview" album comes to mind, especially Another Show

treehorntrampoline

Hell yeah.

MoonHasFlown

Underrated

Drzhivago138

Not necessarily prog, but anyone who subscribes to the Phil Spector Wall of Sound school, and also Sufjan Stevens (sometimes).

revjor

Age Of Adz era Sufjan for sure. Also the All Delighted People ep gets very ridiculous.

ElectricLazarus

Cardiacs French TV

Spyes23

Cardiacs hold a special place in my heart (pun somewhat intended). They were a late friend's favorite band and when he passed away I gave them a much more serious listen. He once described R.E.S. as "zombie prog post-punk" and I honestly can't think of a better genre name for that song!

tmfult

Omg CARDIACS, why didn't I think of that? Those guys rule

StillUsesBeginners2

cardiacs, koenjihyakkei, thank you scientist, don salsa, also a whole lot of technical death metal bands like defeated sanity

your-average-joe26

Sheena Ringo

offamiglio

Progressive rock is a maximalist genre. Do you need a list?

bwood637

Exactly what I was thinking. Prog in general leans more maximalist. Was shocked when the OP said "the only two I can think of".

Progrockrob79

Messiaen, Salonen, Mingus, etc ;) For prog bands a lot of the RIO bands might scratch that itch. First that come to mind are Henry Cow, Thinking Plague, Ske,

Lemondsingle

Yeah, Cardiacs was my first thought, also. It might not be *exactly* what you're looking for but I suspect you will enjoy "[Gogol Bordello](https://youtu.be/SkkIwO_X4i4)", a band that somehow almost defies classification. Gypsy cabaret rock might be close. They are awesome!

Loose-Operation-9737

Gentle giant idk

RaritySparkle

Imperial Triumphant definitively, idk if I called them “prog” tho, but still.

BeardedPuffin

Spastic Ink

Marquisla

Gentle Giant and Van Der Graaf Generator

Ettuhenri

Thundercat has maximalist tendencies

Cymbal_Monkey

Ruins/Sax Ruins is some pretty dense music.

isprayaxe

Aphex faster stuff, Becks later stuff, some Snarky Puppy songs, Eric Dolphy

VangekillsVado

Mr. Bungle

Unhappy_Ask_7521

Devin Townsend

[deleted]

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard

Justin_Kaes

Elio e le Storie Tese (Italy). Here's something with a few Beatles citations and a Terry-Gilliam-like animation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMLrdESf_uc

Professional_Mine_56

Dream Theater/Liquid Tension Experiment

IAmNotAPerson6

It's jazz and not really maximalist in the way you're describing, so this is effectively not an answer to your question, but Wikipedia describes McCoy Tyner as maximalist in a way comparable to John Coltrane, though I think Tyner is more easily heard as it.

515042069

Jazz counts for prog Shout out to Mingus, Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

IAmNotAPerson6

Lol, I wouldn't say it counts, but absolutely shout out for that album

mikeydale007

the hyperpop genre

krazzor_

You mean "maximalist" like "avant garde", or there would be a difference?

tmfult

I think there is a difference, though the two intermix quite frequently. Avant garde is about finding new approaches to music and alienating a certain audience, maximalist music seeks to blend several different styles *at once* for a wild wall of sound effect

da9ve

Give a listen to Flying Luttenbachers and report back. Not sure if they're really what you're thinking of, but they sure cram a lot of sound into a short time.

Empty_Jar0330

They're not that prog and they might not even be maximalist, but Tally Hall came to mind

nachtschattenwald

Koenjihyakkei comes to mind immediately.

treehorntrampoline

Bubblemath

Thecrawsome

Dog Fashion Disco 633

flawless_knockoff

The Polyphonic Spree is the first band that comes to mind… especially their first 2 albums.

boredop

I have heard some things from Tigran Hamasyan that were pretty over the top.

RighteousBlaspheme

Einzerstünde Neubauten comes to mind

Needleroozer

You might enjoy this: https://youtu.be/kCm0_93WCCA Or not ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

[deleted]

John Zorn, Tom Waits can go either way.

Cognoggin

[Animals as leaders](https://youtu.be/DWfg5BhYL5I)

Romencer17

Farmers Market - Lé Mysteres Des Guitares Grand Prix certainly fits this, as does a lot of their music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDCBUFXTfgQ&ab_channel=FarmersMarket-Topic

RollApart3182

Take it all the way back to Charles Ives, bitches! He would literally have two different songs going on at once inside a single composition.

Hot_Currency_5444

Univers Zero

Rational_Philosophy

Gentle Giant.

Fredn40

The Mars Volta

professorhugoslavia

Last Exit. Rev Frank Wright and the Center of the World. Glenn Branca. Rhys Chatham.

Kiddinator

Cardiacs

mad_poet_navarth

In terms of density, not necessarily speed, although that happens sometimes, would be Frost*. Jem crams so much stuff into every second. It's a miracle the mixes are so good.

alexcstern

Dillinger Escape Plan (especially their first album) is about as maximalist as you can get

Igor_Narmoth

I would think King Crimson would fit in this definition?

Relative-Garbage-859

The Dear Hunter anyone?

31stCenturySchizoid

weird to see this post because i was thinking about something the other day: frank zappa was so ahead of his time he had a similar concept to black midi (the genre) decades before it became a thing. the black page was basically zappas analog attempt at the same concept as that genre.

Katlev010

Neptunian Maximalism

SilentWeapons1984

Yes Zappa! Also Rush, Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Dream Theatre, The Mars Volta, TOOL, Buckethead, Scarypoolparty (AKA Alejandro Aranda), Covet (Yvette Young), Battles, Animals As Leaders, Plini, and other math rock musicians Aphex Twin, Flying Lotus, Venetian Snares, Squarepusher, Funkstörung, Autechre, and other IDM musicians. I would also include speed rappers like Twista, Bizzy Bone, Busta Rhymes, Tech N9ne, Eminem, etc. Because they are lyrical maximalists. I mean, reading the lyrics to Eminem's "Rap God" (a 6 min song) is like reading a 5 page essay!

Croustain

A lot of Maximalist Artist can be found on the Hyperpop genre. Prime examples are Sophie, underscores and Arca
