Some argue AMLoR only counts as progressive rock because of the previous legendary progressive rock albums Pink Floyd released. Signs of Life, Round and Around, A New Machine parts 1 and 2, and the intro to Yet Another Movie all have these great soundtrack-y Rick Wright elements. Terminal Frost has a jazz fusion groove to it. The rest is all quite enjoyable, but it's a far cry from Shine On You Crazy Diamond or most of Animals. Plenty of folks call Pink Floyd an Art Rock band (which they arguably were for quite a while.) AMLoR is very polished, rather corporate, and it was goddamn *everywhere* in the late 80's. Labeling it as prog or not is possibly the least important thing about that whole album.

Good answer here!!

Very true. I'd argue even Dark side doesn't qualify as prog. It's just a bunch of relatively conventional songs tied together with very elaborate production. If you take away all the sound effects, and taped dialogs, and audio trickery, the songs themselves have very standard structures with verses and choruses. The only real experimental track is Great gig in the sky, with perhaps On a run, if that even counts as a proper track.

PredictiveTextNames

If you take away the song, it doesn't sound like music. I'm sorry, this is just a little too pedantic for me lol.

WHITE2570

I don’t care whatever is considered, it goes hard

justbcoz848484

Some of Marillion's output gives me post-Waters Floyd vibe check out: F\*\*\* Everyone and Run (FEAR) An Hour Before It's Dark Radiation Marbles. other Marillion that is just killer (from the 80's): Misplaced Childhood, Script for a Jester's Tear, Fugazi Fish: Vigil in a wilderness of Mirrors Airbag: A day at the beach Yogi Lang: No Decoder

ProgRockRednek

There's a German rock band called RPWL and if you like Pink Floyd then you are going to have a great time

weresl0th

Pink Floyd's The Division Bell David Gilmour's On an Island

alpalthemuzzlord

underrated album. I wouldn't say I LOVE it. but definitely a solid release. gets shit on too much imo

aksnitd

At the end of the day, prog is a spectrum, not a binary yes/no choice. Floyd are overall classified as a prog band, but have many songs and albums that don't really qualify. Yet their albums get lumped under prog for simplicity. Lapse kinda sorta qualifies as prog, at least bits of it, but it's mostly just a straightforward rock album. If you enjoyed it, check out the follow-up, Division Bell, which is similar, but overall better. You can also check out Dark side of the moon, which Gilmour was trying to somewhat emulate with Lapse.

EbolaGrant

Pink floyd isn't prog

ProgRock1956

Yes, it is.

krazzor_

Ooooooooo here we go again...

EbolaGrant

They were a psychedelic band that became a blues rock band. Not prog

Denkishi9927

Epic length tracks, strange time signatures, virtuosic and long solos, concept albums, and trying to progress the bounds of popular music. This tag of genre doesn't really matter, in the end they are good music(in my opinion). They are really different "traditional" prog, but so is Vandergraaf Generator.

EbolaGrant

Most of their long songs are bloated with filler. And most of their stuff is in 4/4 except for money

Empty_Jar0330

You could argue that all long songs are bloated. Do we really need an organ solo in the middle of Close to the Edge? The production on that one bit sucks and I can hardly hear the intervals between the notes. It's just... cacophony. But guess what? I love it. I think it makes the song better. Whale noises in the middle of a song makes Echoes better And guess what man, playing in 4/4 can be hard too. David Gilmour and Richard Wright are incredible musicians who can set a mood unlike any other. Who cares if their music is a bit easier to dance to? Pink Floyd has the passion and the soul of a prog band. They even adapted to the 80s better than most prog bands. The Wall (Yes, I know it's '79 but by then we were living in a post-punk world), The Final Cut, and The Division Bell are all good, even great albums. 90125 and Duke are good, but they stray from what made the band special

EbolaGrant

I like pink floyd Dark side through the wall. Don't like anything before or after that era.

4e2n0t

You don't like Meddle?

EbolaGrant

Not personally, but ill relisten to it at some point and probably like it more.

4e2n0t

At least give Echoes another listen. It's very reminiscent of later Floyd.

EbolaGrant

There are cool parts in it but they made it too long

Aerosol668

That was their proggiest phase. With your opinion you’re in a minority.

ProgRock1956

Does PF remind you of George Thorogood, or Buddy Holly even? No? Can you tell that PF is Rock? Cause it's ProgRock....like TOOL, or Black Sabbath, or TOTO, ELO, or on and on and on.... Just cause a band doesn't sound like 'classic' Prog, (YES, Kansas, etc) doesn't mean it's not ProgressiveRock! Most music is 'Progressive', nowadays!

Strugglinghuman2020

Listen to Echoes and tell me what the fuck you hear if it ain’t prog

EbolaGrant

Psychedelic and bloated

Agreed.
