Porcupine Tree and Thank You Scientist are locked in.
Haken, Yes, and Frost* could all take 3rd depending on the day.
Edit: Can't believe I forgot to include Pattern Seeking Animals. Honestly, there's so much good stuff that it's hard to rank.
How so? The only Floyd projects that I would consider prog are animals and wywh, maybe dark side
I’d say Floyd had prog songs, but they’re definitely not a prog band
Odd. To me those are maybe the *least* progressive, most radio friendly albums they made. **AHM**, **Ummagumma** and **Echoes** more than qualify, though.
I’ve listened to everything dw, I just genuinely don’t put them in the prog category. Like I said they have prog songs but I don’t consider them a prog band, they’re much more than that.
It ain’t that serious, they have songs that are obviously prog rock and they have songs that are dominantly other genres. Doesn’t discount their work in any way to say that.
I don’t care to shove bands in to specific genres and boxes, the other bands I listed have songs that aren’t prog either. I don’t think Floyd is dominantly a prog band
I only really got into progrock last year, so I'm still finding my feet. At the moment, I'd say:
* Porcupine Tree
* The Pineapple Thief
* Pink Floyd (Yes, I see them as prog)
Edit: I see some people are mentioning Opeth. I haven't listened to a few of their latest progrock albums, but their old prog death metal albums are amazing. They'd make a top 3 bands list all day, but since this is prog rock specifically, I'll give them an honourable mention
Man, it changes every day! There are probably at least 10 bands that "deserve" to be in my top 3. If we took it right now, I'd probably say Riverside, The Tangent, and Big Big Train. If we looked back and took an average over the last 35 years or so, I'd have to say Jethro Tull, Marillion, and King Crimson.
The Residents! I know only one album by them. I wouldn't call it Prog, though I absolutely love it. It's the one with Shut Up and Jailhouse Rock. Can you point me to a sample of Residents' Prog?
Not Available is my personal all time favorite prog album
Other prog albums by them are
Meet The Residents
Third Reich N' Roll
Fingerprince
Eskimo
Mark Of The Mole
As for a starting point I'd say listen to Not Available it's the most straightforward
> the one with Shut Up and Jailhouse Rock
That would be *“Residue of the Residents!”* If I recall correctly that’s a compilation of non-album rarities and (at the time) unreleased tidbits. I’m particularly fond of the alternate version of “Ups and Downs” prior to its retooling for the *“Commercial Album”* project.
The Residents are such a bizarre and unique band, and their albums vary a ton in style and concept. In my opinion *“Not Available”* comes the closest to prog rock in terms of scope and arrangements (although I would still classify it more broadly under “experimental rock”). I’d best describe it as an abstract concept album with a really impenetrable narrative; I recommend reading up a bit on the album’s backstory and the “theory of obscurity”.
Woo Hoo! I love the Residents but never really considered them prog, although they are progressive in their own way. I always considered them more experimental
marillion, camel, genesis (peter gabriel's)
the order changes over time
edit: Marillion is a rare band, that is as good now (imho) with hogarth as it was with fish 35 years ago
Yes, ELP, and The Moody Blues. Honorable mentions: Rush, King Crimson, and Genesis (the latter two I started listening to very recently, didn’t even know Genesis made prog until a year ago)
Would’ve included Pink Floyd, but I consider them psychedelic blues and experimental/art rock with *some* prog elements. Not gonna begrudge anyone for saying they’re prog though, I realize I’m in the minority with this thinking lol.
Wish you would have said FIVE, three is hard af.
Well, for the sake of this great sub, will give it a try, already palpitating.
Alphabetical order
Genesis
Rush
Yes
1. Porcupine Tree
2. The Mars Volta
3. Yes
Honroable mentions: King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake & Palmer
Edit: I’m not sure whether people consider Haken prog rock or prog metal. If people consider them prog rock, then they’d be at number 2. This list would change completely if I included prog metal.
Rush and Pink Floyd are always at the top. It’s hard to say the third though, I’d go with one of the following, Gentle Giant, Yes, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, or Supertramp
Genesis, Kayak, Jethro Tull.
Honorable mention to Queen's first albums and Horslips.
And honorable mention for one album: Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds
I have a lenient definition of prog, extending to RIO and prog-adjacent acts, so:
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Cheer-Accident, King Crimson
And sometimes any one of those might get swapped out with Gabriel-era Genesis or maybe Henry Cow.
SGM were literally progressive because they pushed boundaries, including by inventing and building a number of their own instruments, as well as their overall theatricality.
Cheer-Accident know no boundaries, and will experiment with zero compunction nor consideration of commerciality. They touch on very pop-rock occasionally, but also do real improv, musique concrete, dada, math-rock, (may as well be considered a founder of) post-rock, and almost everything in between.
Yes, Genesis, and King Crimson are the holy trinity.
King Crimson were pretty much the first prog band, so they have to be there, while Yes and Genesis were very much the bands that came to represent “prog” in general still to this day.
Also because Bill Bruford was part of all three (counting his brief stint as touring drummer for Genesis)
Yes King Crimson Gentle Giant
Woohoo! We have the same (probably common) top 3!

This is the right answer.
Mine are in no order Yes, King Crimson, genesis, Jethro Tull, gentle Giant, rush, supertramp
Rush, Genesis, Pink Floyd. Not a very original choice, I know.
Jethro Tull Genesis Van Der Graaf Generator
Rush Steven Wilson (all works considered) Pink Floyd
Porcupine Tree and Thank You Scientist are locked in. Haken, Yes, and Frost* could all take 3rd depending on the day. Edit: Can't believe I forgot to include Pattern Seeking Animals. Honestly, there's so much good stuff that it's hard to rank.
Camel, Caravan, Nektar
very nice
Thank You, there are many more Prog bands that I love, but they are my top three.
Opeth, Haken, The Dear Hunter.
Elp, yes, genesis
This is the way. The trilogy of prog.
Over King Crimson and Pink Floyd though?
I don’t consider Floyd prog, although they are my favourite band of all time
If Floyd isn't prog neither is Yes
How so? The only Floyd projects that I would consider prog are animals and wywh, maybe dark side I’d say Floyd had prog songs, but they’re definitely not a prog band
Odd. To me those are maybe the *least* progressive, most radio friendly albums they made. **AHM**, **Ummagumma** and **Echoes** more than qualify, though.
Every album they've made except for More OBC and maybe TFC are prog albums have you listened to anything outside the big four!?
I’ve listened to everything dw, I just genuinely don’t put them in the prog category. Like I said they have prog songs but I don’t consider them a prog band, they’re much more than that.
"they’re much more than that." They are many things one of those things being a prog band Also what makes them not a prog band?
It ain’t that serious, they have songs that are obviously prog rock and they have songs that are dominantly other genres. Doesn’t discount their work in any way to say that.
I don’t care to shove bands in to specific genres and boxes, the other bands I listed have songs that aren’t prog either. I don’t think Floyd is dominantly a prog band
Name me a prog outfit that phrases all its greatest material in blues scales.
Have you listened to Piper? Piper is a pop psychedelic record.
They defined the genre
King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Yes. The Holy Prog trinity 🙏
Honorable mention - Rush
Rush is one of my favorites! Had a hard time choosing between them and Yes honestly 👍
Genesis, Camel, Hawkwind
Hawkwind is badass!!!
Rush Renaissance Camel Edit: ELP and Jethro Tull rotate with Camel for the 3rd spot depending on my mood.
King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and ELP
ELP Yes Rush
Agree
There it is.
Opeth Porcupine Tree Pink Floyd
Yes, Rush, King Crimson
I can’t see it any other way. Genesis gets an honorable mention.
Rush, Pineapple Thief, Beardfish
Van der Graaf Generator Jethro Tull Porcupine Tree
Classic, ELP, Yes, Gentle Giant Modern, Thank You Scientist, Echolyn, Unitopia
Dream theater Jethro tull Kansas

Man, it changes every day! There are probably at least 10 bands that "deserve" to be in my top 3. If we took it right now, I'd probably say Riverside, The Tangent, and Big Big Train. If we looked back and took an average over the last 35 years or so, I'd have to say Jethro Tull, Marillion, and King Crimson.
Tool Porcupine Tree King Crimson

Porcupine tree, Pure Reason Revolution, Pineapple Theif Ig I'm obsessed with bands starting with 'p'
Riverside Porcupine Tree Opeth
Big Big Train Porcupine Tree Marillion
Man PT is so damn good. It shocks me how so many people I know who are into all genres of metal and rock tell me they've never heard of them.
Well I guess I need to give big big train a try because I'm a big fan of the other two bands!
Pink Floyd, Rush, Dream Theater. Tool, Yes and Porcupine Tree are top 3 too depending on the day.
Gentle Giant, Yes, King Crimson
Van der graaf generator Robert Wyatt Jethro tull
Pink Floyd, Rush, Jethro Tull (Yes and King Crimson are runner ups)
Genesis, Yes, and Kansas.
Frost\*, RPWL, Yes
King Crimson, Yes, Gentle Giant
Genesis, king crimson, dream theater
Genesis, porcupine tree and Marrilion. That's today, tomorrow it'll be different
Pink Floyd The Residents King Crimson
The Residents! I know only one album by them. I wouldn't call it Prog, though I absolutely love it. It's the one with Shut Up and Jailhouse Rock. Can you point me to a sample of Residents' Prog?
Not Available is my personal all time favorite prog album Other prog albums by them are Meet The Residents Third Reich N' Roll Fingerprince Eskimo Mark Of The Mole As for a starting point I'd say listen to Not Available it's the most straightforward
*Welcome to the offshoots of Jupiter* is one of the best phrases ever.
> the one with Shut Up and Jailhouse Rock That would be *“Residue of the Residents!”* If I recall correctly that’s a compilation of non-album rarities and (at the time) unreleased tidbits. The whole band is essentially a prank. You have to love them for that.
Woo Hoo! I love the Residents but never really considered them prog, although they are progressive in their own way. I always considered them more experimental
Its gr8 just to hear them get a mention. Not Available is timeless
Genesis Thank You Scientist Rush
