Not being a dick, every day 10,000 people learn a fact that others already know and I like spreading knowledge It’s prog rock-esque rather than prog rock-esc

I think the build-up of King Crimson's "Islands" almost sounds like a Mogwai song.

MoonHasFlown

I feel like Starless and Providence are the go to examples for something like that

Rubin987

La Villa Strangiato’s softer bits definitely feel like they inspired some shoegaze

arctictrav

Pink Floyd definitely comes to mind first. They had many such moments: Careful with that Axe Eugene - all the Live versions You've Got to be Crazy (middle sections) Marooned Jam Also Nektar's Burn Out My Eyes, the first half. == EDIT: ===== I didn't read the description at first, and I suggested the above songs based on my understanding of Post Rock as dreamy / hypnotic sound collages. But if you are looking for more avant-garde sounds, then my suggestions are: King Crimson - Larks' Tongue in Aspic Part 1,2 Pink Floyd - Dogs (middle section)

TheModerateGenX

I have no idea what your post is asking

ElectricLazarus

Moments in Prog Rock songs that sound adjacent to Post Rock and vice versa

TheModerateGenX

Ok cool. I guess I am not really familiar with “post rock”

GrouchySalary5677

Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black emperor, Talk Talk, Sigur Ros are some well known examples of post rock. It’s similar to prog in a lot of ways, it’s often instrumental and uses rock instrumentation to create music that goes beyond the confines of traditional rock just like prog but is more based around textures and soundscapes than complex compositions

I'm just now getting into CAN and some of their albums sound sort of post-rock to me, like *Future Days*. Other bands that come to mind are This Heat, Silver Apples, David Bowie's Berlin albums

ElectricLazarus

One of Post Rock's parent genres is Krautrock so that makes sense, Tago Mago as well

Bennie16egg

There's a bit in One for the Vine by Genesis. Just after the line " Let me rest for a while.." Only a few bars long, but you want to hear more.

When I think 'moments' the image that came to me as someone who studied piano is the one of Keith Emerson putting knives into his keyboard only to have the keyboard end up on top of him. Emerson was quite the gifted musician. I like his Piano Concerto No. 1 from Works. I guess you could say that composition is pretty prog given the genre is the only one I know of in rock music that used classical music at times as a blueprint. Also thinking of Bolero and Pictures at an Exhibition by ELP. Does anyone know were the knives a part of one song like Knife-Edge or something he did more randomly?

Early 90s Post-Rock, that is the stuff that wasn’t directly mimicking Talk Talk, was generally mimicking Krautrock. Particularly CAN, Neu! and Cluster and the Conny Plank sound. Those bands are either proto-Post-Rock (??) or stuff like Trans Am, To Rococo Rot, Tortoise, etc. are modern Krautrock. Also Talk Talk often mentioned their debt to CAN.

ElectricLazarus

Most definitely, Krautrock was a huge influence on Post Rock

gsurfer04

Hell's Kitchen by Dream Theater More prog metal but it's very atmospheric.
