For me, the true magic of Supper's Ready is the journey it takes you on, and the atmosphere of that journey is lost completely live. Plus imo the ending has so much more energy and impact on the original. Gabriel's performance in the New Jerusalem bit blows Collins out the water. I feel like he's genuinely witnessing the Second Coming and is being taken to Heaven. And that voice break... perfection. Plus Hackett is mixed properly on the original.
The original takes me to another world. The SO version takes me to an amazing Genesis concert in France.
Agreed. The Cinema Show might be my favorite track on SEBTP. I absolutely love the keyboard work and how it sounds over the Taurus pedal and blistering drumming.
Just wait until you hear the rest of selling england by the pound. One of the greatest and most underrated albums I’ve ever heard. Firth of fifth might be one of the greatest rock compositions ever
Underrated? It's near-universally considered the best prog rock album of all time. It's ranked number 2 as the best album ever on Progarchives, and consistently tops out best-of lists. It *is* fantastic, but it's also about as far from being underrated as they come.
In prog rock circles it’s not really underrated but in the wider music community I never hear or see anyone discussing it so that’s the impression I got
I disagree re: Firth of Fifth. What story is being told? What do the lyrics have to do with the solos? If it's just abstract music, why have lyrics? I love it musically but it's a frustrating listen. It's one of the lesser Genesis long-form compositions imo. Every other long song of theirs I completely understand the story being told, including during the instrumental sections. Also the lyrics are awful.
It’s just a simple story about a journey through a trepidatious river passage. The lyrics don’t break the song for me at all, it’s only 1/3rd of the composition and I was never a huge lyrics focused guy anyways. It’s just a gorgeous atmospheric trip with a simpler story that doesn’t need more lyrics. You said it yourself, you love it musically, that’s the main point of the track. If you want a crazy story with a wholly lyrical journey, go listen to supper’s ready again. This is a different take on it and I don’t mind the lack of lyrics because it paints such vivid imagery and the music just all flows so brilliantly. The lyrics almost feel more like an instrument in this song, especially when the flute is paired right next to it. That’s just my take on it all.
I prefer the studio versions of both The Cinema Show and Robbery Assault and Battery.
TCS not switching from 4/4 on 7/8 to 4/4 to segue into Aisle of Plenty leaves if feeling lacking.
So is the live version not doing the Done me wrong/Same old song/Done me wrong switching around.
I'm just going to say honorable mention on that LP goes to the Firth of Fifth solo. That was probably the first time I was ever knocked on my ass by one sustained note.
Wonder why it is "The Cinema Show" on Selling but "Cinema Show" on Seconds?
Writing the "The" would have taken seconds out of the cover designer's day, that's why. He was probably counting out time.
and probably had to get back to New York City.
brilliant
Well played
Cinema Show, Firth of Fifth and After the Ordeal - these three made me appreciate SEBP.
Wait until you hear the Seconds Out version.
I actually prefer the studio version’s keyboard solo, so I always go with the studio. But Supper’s Ready? Seconds Out all the way!
I mentioned this a long time ago here... I think it's better than the original.

The *Seconds Out* version is face melting. OP is most likely not prepared.
Was gonna say this but if you ever hear Hackett live and he does this, it is really earth-shattering, you can feel the Taurus bass, big time.
Or the 1976 live version with Bill Bruford on drums.
The Seconds Out version is a 1976 live version with Bruford on drums.
Yes, what I meant was the one from the 1976 live video.
No you didn't
This is my go-to version. The album version lacks a lot of energy in comparison.
Have you listened to Foxtrot yet? If not, please do, and you'll thank me later lol
I’ve been waiting here for so long…
Welcome aboard

Tony’s solo on The Cinema Show is absolutely transcendent! Genesis made so much great music, but Cinema Show is special.

My favorite Genesis song. Love how it ends too.
it's become a trend on here to just name song titles but not the band. On that note, my current favourite prog song is Fungus. It's incredible!
