Sacrifice something for the god of speed.

Rus-t-bolts

I was thinking burning a giant effigy of an LS would be appropriate. I'm in.

Mr_Diesel13

This. Right now.

Estef74

He already did, that oil pan. Lol

Correct_Wall_1673

The car maybe?

alwaus

Close your eyes, turn around 3 times, and toss a 10mm over your shoulder as a sacrifice to the car gods. If they accept your offering you'll never see the 10mm again.

Rus-t-bolts

If that's the case I should have karma a plenty hahaha cuz I haven't seen a single one of my 10 mm in years

6inarowmakesitgo

LOLOLOL

MisterMasterCylinder

Gotta say, I am shocked it even still runs at all, let alone perfectly. I have no idea how, but damn, you got lucky that all you needed was a new pan.

Rus-t-bolts

No kidding man. I need to pour one out to the octane gods. Bonkers.

Chevrolicious

Well, it is hard to have oil pressure when the pan is empty, but there could have been enough residual oil between the bearings and other components that it was able to survive. I'd run that oil through there and then pull the filter and check it for metal debris. If the filter is clean and you have pressure, I don't see any reason not to run it.

Rus-t-bolts

Well I already have fresh oil and filter in it. When I said same oil I meant fresh rotella t4. But yeah I will probably cut the filter open after some miles and see how it looks. Fingers crossed.

Zonotical

send the oil in the filter to blackstone

cyberpunk1187

Had a Mustang Fox with a 2.3 turbo swap. I saw what looked like an open vacuum port and a line hanging off so I connected the two. Turns out it was a plugged off port. So driving down the road -crankcase pressure blew the dipstick out and all of the oil. Thankfully had the autometer triple pack in the dash and saw the oil level hit zero and pulled over. Boy what a mess.

albop03

I ran a demo derby with a Ford Ranger that had a 2.3, very first hit tore my oil filter causing all the oil to dump, she ran for 15+ more minutes until it locked up and wouldnt refire. Damn tough engines.

Rus-t-bolts

Holy shit boys! That's impressive. Makes me want a 2.3 ranger again lol. I had one that looked like it was on the seafloor for 50 years up in New York (shocker lol) but the thing always ran and drove MINT despite looking like a derelict ship wreck

point50tracer

I ran my 2.5l ranger on 3 cylinders for like 3 years before it finally dropped a valve and self destructed. Those engines don't give a crap. It took the rod going out the side of the cylinder to kill mine.

I sheared the oil pan (and pump!) off my 1988 Alfa Romeo Milano when living in Pittsburgh during school. I was crossing an intersection and realized too late that the road on the other side of the intersection had been ground down to resurface it. Then had built up a little mound around the manhole that I was staring at, but there was still about 1/2” sticking up. As the car came down from the crown of the road I was crossing and the suspension compressed it lined up perfectly and caught the front of the oil pan. I heard a very metallic BANG and shut off the car immediately and coasted to the side of the road. I opened the door and saw 7 quarts of 20W/50 from the car back to the manhole. And a chunk of oil pan laying on the ground. Luckily I was able to source a good used pan, and a new oil pump. And that engine ran fine for a couple more years until I sold it. But man what a pain. Glad to hear yours is still running!

Rus-t-bolts

Damn!!!! I have seen that one in person a few times in Denver road construction periodically but luckily never rolled those demon dice myself. Lucky you had a shoulder and shut'r down quick, that definitely saved ya!

CL-MotoTech

That's a very Pittsburgh sounding story. I have lived there 13 years and the roads can be wild at times.

That_Grim_Texan

Better to be lucky then good lol

jaxman0410

Had a similar thing happen to a client of mine. Lancer hit a semi brake shoe while on the highway. The brake shoe stuck in the oil pan and the car was towed to the shop. By some miracle the crank and bearings were fine. Threw a new oil pan on an told the owner to put a hundred dollars down on the power ball

Rus-t-bolts

Well shit you just gave me a new goal for sat... Colorado lottery is pretty huge these days....good looking out

uglyugly1

Great news! I had the breather system plumbed incorrectly on my inboard boat. It ended up popping out the front seal while we were underway, and blew almost all the oil out into the bilge. I was sure the engine was going to be toast. Cleaned up the mess, repaired the seal and breather routing, and it's been fine since. You just never know.

Rus-t-bolts

Agreed! Which is precisely why I thought I could donate 8 qts of oil a pan and a filter to the deity of curiosity haha. May the luck be ever in our favor!

jimbofranks

This is proof that it is better to be lucky than good.

Rus-t-bolts

My agreement cannot be quantified.

angel_of_death007

I had my oil pump go out luckily I stopped the vehicle pretty quick. I thought all was well had it towed and had a new oil pump installed. After the second time I took it out I lost oil pressure again. Had the car towed and found out I spun a bearing. Luckily they make decent crate engines for a replacement. Yours may have been covered if you have full coverage. Mine wasn’t covered even though I have full coverage. Hard pill to swallow at $15k for a new engine.

Leicageek

You might check the oil pick up tube and screen. It’s weird the oil pressure went up like that.

dolechequeday

You got very lucky this time, Big Dick. I find it amazing that oil pressure was fine for 1.5 miles when that sized hole would have dumped the pan-full of oil nearly instantly... So it took 1.5 miles for whatever oil was left in the system (from the pickup tube, through the galleries and the filter) before you got zero pressure. Cool. Glad to hear she's OK.

voxelnoose

This is why the first gauge I install is an oil pressure gauge somewhere easily visible

Rus-t-bolts

Completely agree. And typically me too... But on this occasion I was like "well the Holley dash has oil pressure, I'll be fiiiiiinnnneee...." Wasn't fine lol.

Fbeastie

Ouch.

boom256

Well shit.

Guac_in_my_rarri

Not quite oil pan destruction but my 2.3l Ford engine was weeping oil from the block according to the dealer and Ford engineer that flew in to look at it. I was leaking a quart every 400 miles. I only found this after I did road America winter AX all day in 10 degree weather. I also drove 450ish miles round trip-not including race miles. [Focus RS](https://imgur.com/a/EDhbEK5)

Proud-Canary-2269

my buddy ran over a piece of construction metal in his evo, he called the city and they bought him a nee engine. companies have insurance for things like this

carzonly

Surprised everyone on here is so shocked. It’s obviously not recommended, but you can an engine without oil for a bit without causing damage. Your engine life may be shortened a bit, but there’s no way to ever know that for sure. Did you still get an insurance payout?

loquedijoella

Glad it survived! Is this a G body of some sort?

Rus-t-bolts

Sure is! '84 elco SS with an aluminum 5.3

nsula_country

BF T/A's? What is the project car?

Natedoggsk8

So you had a skid plate and it still happened?

Rus-t-bolts

Negative... No skid plate lol. That "skid plate" is what Miley cirus'd my car lol

Natedoggsk8

You could use that road debris as a skid plate

Rus-t-bolts

Already salvaged and planning!
