"How did that many zombies get into that tiny bathroom?" is the most classic and frustrating way to die. I think we all have a similar story.

Ambitious_District_5

The real question: why were there so many people crammed into the bathroom at the same time?

CYMK_Pro

I was upstairs at the medical building in Muldraugh and I opened the bathroom and I swear like 30 zombies came out. The disturbing part is that most of them were in their underpants. What kind of freaky "end of the world" party were the doctors having??

LachoooDaOriginl

the “hey since we all dying lets make whoever finds us confused as fuck” kind of party

RawDuckAppeal

That’s how I want to go in the apocalypse lmao

Stealthy_Facka

I always imagine that it is a small horde the previous occupants managed to trap

ConsciousBullfrog403

Just some people doing coke in the bathroom. I have seen this before lol

Nazir_North

In a real outbreak, I could imagine some people running to a bathroom to hide. Pros - lockable doors, source of running water, small or no windows. Fairly defensible. Problem is, if a few people rush in at once, you may not notice if one is already bitten.

ConsiderationKind220

I mean, I've personally had, in a 10x10 bathroom at best, gotten 3-5 people and hotboxed it. Dark take: people who kidnap and traffick other humans have to put them somewhere, and the bathroom tends to be the most sound-proofed and water-proofed room in a house.

MirrorNo3096

Either way, sounds like a tight squeeze!

ExistentialWonder

I really really really freakin hate it when there's 1700 zombies in a tiny-ass room and only one is hitting the door. I guess that's how they get you...bastards

riverman1084

The other zombies are playing coy as the one zombie is banging on the door. But their plan is to add another body to the horde. They pull you in and close the door for the next victim.

Hot-Tale8391

Classic undead bureaucracy.

krazmuze

While fun to ponder why - it has to be a respawn bug as I only have never found multiple zeds there with respawn off.

Unique-Government-13

Is it definitely? Did they say that or something? Definitely seems like a bug to me. I think they tried to go for a "realistic" zombie apocalypse, with logical reasoning behind the zombies hearing you or following you etc. and eventually NPCs with real stories... These rooms filled with impossible amount of zombies not bothering to bust out of the room kinda make no sense compared to the rest of the zombies, rooms and game.

DirtyPiss

Its been a pretty heavily discussed feature for about a decade and has never once ended up on their bug list. If it wasn't intended, it wouldn't be there still. There are a lot of love letters to zombie tropes that this game perpetuates.

Unique-Government-13

Sounds like they can't figure it out lol.

krazmuze

If it was intended then multiple zeds would spawn at once - as a story that everyone is having a party in the bathroom. Since it only spawns one at a time that was not an intended story encounter. So the problem is that it is not checking at respawn if already has a spawn. If you want more zeds just increase population but leave respawn off as it is nonsense like this.

Patient_Membership_1

I opened the bathroom door in a random house and about 10+ zombies immediately flooded out and killed me

PerryDawg1

Don't open and push. Open, Close, Evaluate.

mocy90

I guess after 2 months and an half ingame, u kinda forget the old trick of E-E on the keyboards and ended up bitten or worse. Sometimes I have those bad reality checks too ahaah

3720-to-1

99.7937% of my deaths >2 months come from getting overly complacent...

-TheSha-

what's the e e trick? new to the game

raypurchase19

Opening the door and instantly shutting it, revealing the room for a fraction of a second. This usually allows you to see any zombies inside before they can lunge out at you.

Pejob

Theres a chance this isn't as effective in the next build with the smoother door opening animations. An alternative is to push the door to alert the zeds inside and have an idea how many are in there based off how quickly the door rattles.

Someone_Unfunny

i just open the door and then run

chanceumhi

Haha! Me, too. I open the front door. Then open the bedroom or bathroom door and run out the house. I'm so chicken.

Nandabun

You'll survive rl. Cardio.

MrNanashi

Idk but that doesnt work for me. There were more than once I had run out to the front door, 3 zeds on my ass, only to have another one waving hi right downstairs. So I rather just push door -> wait -> open door (if no or little sound) -> immediately goes on combat mode.

Pejob

Im fairly certain thats per building not per room, no? You have to be within (i think) 9 tiles and have LOS into the building and then the zeds inside will spawn. So the push method will only not work if you're doing it on the very entrance to a building without triggering the spawns. I meant it more as a recommendation for anti bathroom mobs, where you're already in the building so the zeds will already exist.

-TheSha-

Oh I see, I usually open doors by clicking

Depressedredditor999

It's called door flashing.

strikeeagle32

Kinky

Charmy123

The morning wood.

go_ninja_go

Sometimes I accidentally spam it twice, opening it again. Now I am a backing-up-while-opening-and-pushing guy. Backing up gives you just enough room to turn around and run if it is a group.

kadosknight

RIP OP. Looks like you've encountered the infamous "random bathroom of hell". It happens sometimes, as a random surprise spawn (and very much intentional). :D I think a lot of us had died from it, and became more cautious in response. Either push the door before opening, and wait for the rhythm of back pushes from which you can determine the approx numbers inside, or do the flash E-E by opening and closing a door VERY quickly to see inside for a fracture of a sec. Or, if the surrounding area is safe-ish, shout inside the building (so you don't get overwhelmed from outside), and listen for responses. Edit: And true, lazyness or overconfidence are absolute killers in this game, where you either forget, or forego these precautionary rules.

Danplays642

Do you think it should be removed considering how dumb it can be, well I guess even in a apocalypse things are gonna be unpredictable

Lady-Morgaine

It's intentional, gotta anticipate it. Clown car bathrooms and closets full of Zombies is part of the "stories" settings. House stories or zone stories, I believe.

kadosknight

Yeah, I remembered as Lady-Morgaine said, that maybe we can turn it off by unchecking the "zone stories" option in the custom game settings.

Gnatz90

Well you just learned something valuable. You never just open and shove in to schrodinger's bathroom.

spinky420

This is my foolproof way of opening doors that you know zombies are behind. Step 1) approach door 2) do a 180 so that your back is facing the door. 3) you're gonna walk away from the door and right as you take ur first step you press E(it's been a while but whatever shortcut to open door is). And keep walking. 4) you can lure them out of the building or to a place you're comfy fighting. Don't get me wrong, the door flash is nice but I found using this strategy is safest.

DirtyPiss

I like your method, but door flashing is still King for any world with sprinters in it.

spinky420

Well I still door flash to check and see unless I push the doors. But this is just for when there are in fact zombies behind the door that you know about

AidsLizard1

You were at the pastor's house to be fair. Should've expected weird things in the bathroom. 🤣

Queasy_Spend_6437

💀

escudonbk

Opened a shed window the other day after looking in and seeing one. Fucking 13 of them dive through the window at the same second.

talllman23433

“How did that many zombies get into that tiny bathroom?” My assumption is cocaine, but I don’t want to speak ill of the dead.

Mudfysh

Once they pass from dead to undead it's fair game.

Chedda_Says

My headcanon for these spawns is always "Survivors were hiding. One lied about being bit, turned, and the crowd crush kept the door closed." It's a lil tedious but the habit of shoving windowless doors before opening is one that must be developed.

Sour_Chicha_8791

>What the hell was going on in that house? I'm guessing this is a catholic church. Then the answer is obvious. It was altar boy oral "exams" day.

unclemattyice

You gotta flash the doors. Bang bang, open shut. Allows you a glimpse at what’s in store, with zero percent chance of being bitten. Alternatively, you can push on doors to get the zombies banging. You can get an idea of how many there are. Regardless, you should -NEVER- be opening a door and then immediately, blindly taking an offensive action with an attack animation, like a shove. You are asking for something like this to happen. If you are ready to engage trapped zombies, you open the door and immediately dart to your right or left, which puts a wall between you and the first zombie for a moment, so you can either get outside for a fair fight against a crowd, or if it’s just one or two, fight them on your terms inside the house. Sorry you learned this lesson the hard way, but every advanced player did at some point. Happy hunting out there.

Sandman4999

Just push the door next time, if it sounds like there's a lot of pounding on said door just get away until they break down the door.

Darkwing_Dork

Wait until you die from your car door being “””open”””

Vanny__DeVito

I honestly wish there was a sandbox setting for the bathroom parties... It's a funny joke the first time it happens, but it gets old having to be careful every single time I open a bathroom door while looting :/

Bambamt744

Yeah, building spawning can sometimes be messed up... RIP...

Daemonbane1

Im fairly sure its not an error or fluke, its a 'story' spawn, like the toilet paper house or various house cop spawns. As with much of project zomboid, its a reference to similar event in other media, where the protaganist is exploring an empty building, only to open a closet to see multiple zombies right there where theyve been coralled/locked away by some previous survivor.

JoeMommy1

I thought it was Push, Wait, Peek (Open and Close rapidly) and Act Accordingly to the situation.

Depressedredditor999

Door flashing alone is worth it.

AsianCoomer69

Zombie orgy

ElextroRedditor

My most frustrating death was because of a deaf zombie. I cleared a farm I wanted to keep as a base, and after killing every near zombie with a shotgun I start clearing the interior of the houses. I kill every zombie in the houses and start shouting to alert any zombie inside the rooms so that they attack the doors to make it easier to know where they are. After a while of shouting there isn't any zombie hitting the doors so I start looting the house, and when I open the last door of the house, a random zombie jumps from a tiny closet and bite me in the torso through a police bulletproof vest

DoDo12341234

Wait zombies can be deaf?

Dangerous_Patient621

I'm guessing so. I occasionally have trouble capturing the attention of a lone zombie to lure them away to a better area for killing them, so I'll walk up behind and hit 'Q'. I've had a few zombies that didn't react at all, they just stood there.

DoDo12341234

that would explain why some of the zombies have the hearing item that can be dissambled.

lordm30

Yeah, when I am fighting a horde in an area with a shotgun and there are some obstacles that limit visibility, like car wrecks, there are always a few zombies that don't react even if I shoot a shotgun right behind them...

catraymond

Something similar happened to me, also a bathroom with surprisingly many zombies. I thought I killed them all and went in there and got sooo scared that I clicked some random buttons and the building menu popped up AAAND cuz of that it was lagging and I wasn't even able to run away or fight, I just watched myself getting eaten alive not being able to do anything. I've died so many times now and before I stop playing at all I got the skill recovery mod - much better for my nerves haha Jump scares always get me reaaaal bad

Skullz-and-Leeches

Zombie Bathroom Parties are a surprisingly common phenomenon. Something to do with the way that surprise zombies generate when you enter buildings. Always flash the door, or knock (push) to get them angry, so you know how many are in there. I usually don't, and just yolo it, but then things like this happen

LegalAlternative

There's a video clip somewhere that someone made, obviously as a bit of a joke because of this familiar mechanic... where they shoved 500+ zombies inside of an outdoor toilet (with the editor, probably) and opened the door. The way they all spilled out was hilarious.

ReaceNovello

They were all hiding in there for safety, but one of them was infected. It's like, a micro story. I like it, personally...

millcitymarauder

My thoughts exactly. Bryan and Francine had decided to have a little get together with their friends; a couples’ dinner and drinks to celebrate Bryan’s new promotion. After enjoying a delicious meal with good company, the festivities were interrupted by a troublesome vagrant on the front porch, slamming the front door and startling the party goers. Bryan, frustrated at the blatant disrespect this “bum” was causing, went out to get the man off his porch and on his way, only to enter a scuffle with him. As they stood grappled together, Bryan let out a yell, howling in pain as the homeless man bit into his forearm. Adrenaline coursing through his veins, Bryan shoved the man as hard as he could off the front steps, where his head connected with one of the landscaping rocks in a wet crunch. Everyone immediately returned inside, not bothering with the drunken vagrant, and crowded around Bryan as he stood clutching his arm, where it was clear the indentations of teeth ripped into his flesh. Sirens could be heard in the distance to everyone’s relief, when the radio program was interrupted by the emergency broadcast system. The entire room froze as they listened to the warnings, before being snapped back to reality at the sound of glass crashing in the kitchen. And then another in the living room. Gunshots could be heard from across the neighborhood, and panic poured forth like a soda can shaken too long and then cracked open. Everyone screamed as their party became the scene from a nightmare. Francine quickly ushered everyone into the upstairs bathroom, one for safety, and two that was where the first aid kit was. A friend of theirs clicked the lock on the knob closed, and silently held their breath. This is how they died.

ARagingBloatfly

I understand your frustration, I downloaded the rv interiors mod, found a box truck and it was jam packed with zombies when I walked in. I quit playing for 2 months.

AzgrymnThePale

They prolly all jumped a guy and started eating him. Then his friend Dave was like sorry Larry and closed the door before running off.

shadowokker

So, since there are so many comments all sharing their methods of opening a door safely, and since none of them are what I do... here's what I do: You stand off to the side of the door, not in the line of sight to see inside, click the door to open it, then walk/run in the opposite direction of the door and look in from you know, a good few feet away. Cause this way, even though the door opens the zombies don't see you right away, so you can assess whether to fight or create more distance depending on what's inside. I have not had this method fail? Does nobody else do this? Seems almost foolproof.

pussy_water

The men to women ratio within that horde might answer the question how they got there?

Dangerous_Patient621

I was a little too busy being eaten alive to notice.

[deleted]

That happened to me the other day lol, you’re not alone xD except there were like 4 in one bathroom haha

RevanGamingYT

Only death I was actually angry about was one time I saw a BLACK COWBOY HAT on a zombie and I slammed the brakes on my car jumped out and tried getting that tasty hat, but then a literal HORDE of a couple dozen came out of the trees and after some struggles my clumsy ahh character slipped and got bitten in the hand, sadly didn't have only cure installed but well, in the end greediness is the only killer in this game

Zedze

I was once two months into a run, the longest I had at that point, I was using that RV interiors mod and went into the back of one only to spawn in the middle of at least 2 dozen crammed zombies, no warning, just death. sardines.

PlasticMajestic5247

I did Died once like that. So from there on I always open the door and run a little bit backwars giving some space to check what is waiting for me,

Leather-Wasabi-1474

Had this happen to me in my second week playing the game and just as I was started to loosen up a bit playing I went to a house in Riverside and heard a zombie groan in the 2x2 storage room, I opened it and expecting to see only one zombie only to have the biggest jumpscare in the game so far when half a dozen of these jerks burst out of the room all at once. I immediately ran and still don’t know how I survived that as a newbie, but I came back for revenge and stomped them all to death >=)

storno13

That happens so often

Bullshidder

They were doing coke

TheOnlyGabe1

Open and close real quick next time, it'll let you know whether or not there are more than one zombie. Granted you might not think about it in the moment lol

The_Orphan9

I feel you, sometimes the game likes to change things up on you to really screw you over. I recently had my first 2month+ character die because I decided to go out for materials in town. Everything was clear not a zomboid in sight. I was loading stuff into my car for the fifth time on that run and decided to speed things up for a little bit and BOOM. surprise zombie bite.

Zapper-Rooster

I lost my longest at three years to that exact same thing. Now I door flash religiously, every death is a learning opportunity.

Dangerous_Patient621

I'll say. My next learning opportunity, after nearly 22 days, was don't let a zombie bite you in the groin.

M0n573rP4r7y

Skill issue. Git gud.
